Pellissippi State’s inaugural alumni art exhibit features the work of invited artists
who have attended the College and have displayed a commitment to pursuing higher
education opportunities or have become working artists in their communities.
Artists include Sharon Bachleda, Paige Burchell, Jessica Burleson, Pete Hoffecker,
Daniel Huxtable, Steven Kempster, Jamie Schneider, Pamela Simpson, Bill Warden, Elliott White and Dean Yasko.

Three area painters are brought together in a study of the many different
outcomes under the moniker of “abstraction.” The works of John Bissonette,
Jennifer Brickey and Heather Hartman capture the winnowing of information
through a particular view, then the expansion, exploration, structuring, and
meditation that follows. This event is curated by Art faculty member Herb Rieth.

Crystal Wagner invites us to “fast forward to 2050, where plastic grows by itself!”
for a viewing of her one-of-a-kind art. This exhibit explores the space between the
plastic, artificial environment of everyday experiences with man-made materials,
consumerism, and technology and the exotic landscapes that occupy the surface of
our earth. Wagner illustrates the increasingly severe divide between humans and the
natural world through her pieces, which “grow” like life forms through the gallery.

Elissa Graff’s work in enamel draws on nature in both functional and spiritual ways.
For each enamel piece, Graff’s art is drawn twice with wire—first fused into fired
silica and then drawn as an abstraction of the enamel image for the pendant setting.
Each piece is then set like a stone into a related metal and hung from chains, and
each encapsulates a moment and memory forever within glass.

world premiere of this comedy/drama by New York playwright Alex Gherardi. The play examines the lives
of an oft-seen but barely noticed group: the people who serve your food.

Co-produced by Pellissippi State and The WordPlayers, this original play by Laurie Brooks is the poignant
story of two years in the life of the well-known Ingalls family—the only two years Laura Ingalls Wilder
chose not to include in her “Little House” books. Presented with period songs, humor and depth of character,
“A Laura Ingalls Wilder Christmas” tells of healing and celebrates the importance of enduring family bonds.

The Tempest

The College presents this classic Shakespeare play in a co-production
with Duck Ear Productions. Prepare to be transported to a faraway
island for a tale filled with spirits, monsters, vengeance, young love
and sorcery. This presentation, directed by Charles R. Miller, head of
Pellissippi State’s Theatre productions and co-founder of the Smoky
Mountain Shakespeare Festival, promises the best performers and
artists Knoxville has to offer.

Mark Bowden Lecture and Book Signing

ark Bowden is the author of “Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War,”
which was a finalist for the National Book Award in 1999. He also wrote the
essay “The Measured Man,” featured in the College’s 2014-2015 Common Book, “The
Best American Science and Nature Writing” (2013 edition), and originally published
in “The Atlantic.” Bowden’s essay recounts the work of Larry Smarr, an astrophysicist
and pioneer of the Internet who advocates “digitally enabled genomic medicine”
through in-depth study of his own body.
Bowden recounts Smarr’s self-diagnosis of Crohn’s disease, an incurable chronic
inflammation disorder of the digestive system, and his intensive self-study of
everything from his bodily excretions to his DNA. Smarr foresees a future in
which health care is personalized and each person is in charge of his own
treatments, but he faces criticism that such a future could lead to
unnecessary medical intervention and anxiety.

ounded in 1974 as State Technical Institute at Knoxville,
the College has a history steeped in technology, yet we have
always been a proponent of the arts, through academics and
events, as well. Our Studio Art courses include everything from
painting and printmaking to ceramics and sculpture; we offer a
fine arts degree in Music; our Theatre productions are among
the area’s best; and our alumni include Tony Award winner
Levi Kreis and “Men in Black” creator Lowell Cunningham.

The Faculty Lecture Series began in 1994 as “The Last
Lecture,” giving our faculty the opportunity to share their most
important message—the last lecture, as it were—in a fun and
informal way. And faculty aren’t the only ones to have shared
inspiring messages: Alex Haley was a keynote speaker in 1985.
Other notables have included New York Times bestselling
author Eric Weiner, Gov. Bill Haslam and Gary R. Wade, chief
justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court.
Musical concerts have long had a place in the culture of
Pellissippi State. Community participation has always been
a big part of life here, too—from the popular hot air balloon
festival of past years to the culture and diversity events of today.
From outdoor productions of Shakespeare to
public sculpture competitions, from musical
concerts to inspiring lectures—art has always
been part of the history of Pellissippi State.
Each aspect of The Arts at Pellissippi State has
its roots in the College’s unique arts legacy.…
Visual arts are an important part of Pellissippi State’s
history. In 1996, the College hosted a “Profiles of Success” art
competition and exhibition, and many of the winning pieces,
including the iconic “Ladders to Success” sculpture, are still on
display. We also proudly maintain a permanent collection of
student artwork from the annual Juried Student Art Show.
Pellissippi State’s student-and-community Theatre productions
draw their inspiration from not only talented actors and
actresses but also a history of outdoor Shakespeare productions
by the pond at the Hardin Valley Campus. Today, the beautiful
Clayton Performing Arts Center provides a comfortable,
advanced venue for stage premieres.
