Welcome
Keith Chegwin
to the Jan – Apr 2015 Anvil Arts Events Brochure
The Ghost Train, one of the most popular comedy thrillers ever
written, steams into The Haymarket in a brand new production and a cast familiar from stage and television. There’s comedy with
Alan Ayckbourn’s Table Manners from the Norman Conquests trilogy,
and excitement with the tense murder mystery Stone Cold Dead.
Our younger audience will love the mischievous anarchy of The Cat
in the Hat, as well as the more gentle tale of The Snail and the Whale.
There’s a new production of Much Ado About Nothing, and a packed
programme of one night music.
Katy Ashworth
At The Anvil, you can enjoy bands from Nils Lofgren to The Levellers,
comedy from Dara O Briain to Henning Wehn, dance from the
Russian State Ballet to Brendan Cole and music written from 1777
(OAE, 6 February) to last year (Bang on a Can All-Stars, 8 March).
With our Philharmonia Orchestra concert for schools, Orchestra
Unwrapped, the OAE Tots concerts for those taking their first steps
into music and our large-scale schools project One Hundred Years
On, we’re looking after the next generation of audiences too.

Mussorgsky’s spine-tingling
depiction of a witches’ Sabbath
is one of his most successful tone
poems. Tchaikovsky wrote his
Violin Concerto while on a trip
to Switzerland after his ill-fated
marriage had broken up. He found
a sense of renewal that meant
the work went well, writing in a
letter: “In such a frame of mind,
composition loses all sense of labour;
it is pure bliss.” Rimsky-Korsakov’s
orchestral suite takes tales from the
Arabian Nights and dresses them
in gorgeous, inventive orchestral
colours to make a dramatic and
satisfying work. Conductor Diego
Matheuz trained under the famous
El Sistema in his native Venezuela.
“He creates the impression
that everything flows out of his
violin spontaneously. His whole
performance was out of this world.”

Arnold Ridley’s classic comedy thriller is about a group of travellers
(including a newlywed couple, an estranged couple, a self-indulgent
young dandy and an elderly spinster with a parrot) stranded in the
waiting room of an isolated railway station on a dark and stormy night.
They react with various degrees of credulity to the station master’s
warning of death to anyone who sets eyes on the ghostly train that
haunts the line. After the huge success of this play in the 1920s, author Arnold Ridley found fame all over again playing Private Godfrey
in Dad’s Army.

Suitable for 15 years and over
It is the grandest and most
sumptuous of all Mozart’s wind
serenades but we have no idea for what occasion the piece which
opens this concert was written. Used in a crucial scene in the film Amadeus, this is one of the
composer’s most inspired works.
Mysliveček, the greatest Czech
composer of the eighteenth century,
was a friend of the young Mozart,
who described his music as full of
“fire, spirit and life”. His wind music,
drawing on the expert traditions of
his native Bohemia, is well worth
hearing. The Viennese aristocracy of
Mozart’s time loved to have wind
band arrangements played at all
sorts of social occasions, and the selection of music from Don
Giovanni is a delight.

Symphony no. 9
Leon McCawley piano
Alexander Dmitriev conductor
Shostakovich’s music for an
unconventional stage production of Hamlet was a product of the
exciting artistic ferment that
followed the Russian Revolution.
Dramatically powerful music sits
alongside more satirical and lighthearted numbers in this suite from
the full score. Tchaikovsky’s concerto
set the pattern for many future
pieces with its confrontation
between heroic soloist and eloquent
orchestra. Shostakovich sidestepped
expectations with his Ninth
symphony. Expecting a triumphant
epic to celebrate the end of the war,
what the composer described as the
‘light and sunny mood’ of this short
five movement piece nonplussed
the Soviet government.

Ravel’s delicate and touching

landscape of Paris around World
War I. Ravel’s concerto shows
the composer responding to the

La fille mal gardée
Fri 20 February
Coppélia
Every toy has a story, especially in
this witty combination of antics and
abracadabra, set in a doll maker’s
workshop. This light-hearted tale
of mistaken identity and confused
lovers follows mischievous Swanilda,
her impetuous suitor Franz and the
eccentric toymaker Dr.Coppelius as
they are brought to life by sparkling
choreography and the animated
score of Delibes. Coppélia is perfect
for first-time ballet goers, families
and everyone in between.
Sat 21 February
Swan Lake
The greatest romantic ballet
of all time is brought to life by
Tchaikovsky’s haunting and
unforgettable score. From the
impressive splendour of the Palace
ballroom to the moon-lit lake where
swans glide in perfect formation
this compelling tale of tragic
romance has it all. The dual role of
Odette/Odile is one of ballet’s most
unmissable technical challenges.
A gentle tale of love thwarted,
unrequited and found, La fille mal
gardee is a masterpiece of comedy.
A farm boy woos a flirty farmer’s
daughter and they find inventive
ways to avoid her mother. Complete
with virtuoso pas de deux, maypole
and clog dances, this ballet will send
you home happy, delighting those
enjoying it for the very first time
as well as those who want to see it
again and again.

Smetana Overture: The Bartered Bride
Brahms Violin Concerto
Dvořák Symphony no. 9 (From the
New World)
Viktoria Mullova violin
Adam Fischer conductor
The effervescent overture to
Smetana’s most well-known
opera opens this concert in style.
Brahms’ violin concerto is built on
a symphonic scale, to the point
where the original version had the
four movements traditional for that
form. Brahms replaced the middle
two with one of his most beautiful
adagios, and the finale is a vigorous
Hungarian dance. Dvorak’s most
famous symphony, written in
America while filled with longing
for his Czech homeland, has an
apparently inexhaustible flow of
melodies, with a justly famous slow
movement at its heart.
This award-winning production
takes you on a musical journey
through the career of one of
the most successful bands ever
– Frankie Valli and the Four
Seasons. From their beginnings
in the early 50s, the spectacular
show takes you through their hits
including Grease, Bye Bye Baby, Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, Working

Cry and of course, Let’s Hang On.

A great double bill of emerging
talent. Irish musician Ben Glover’s
new record, Atlantic, was recorded
live in his childhood summer home
on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean.
A number of the songs were cowritten with Gretchen Peters and
Mary Gauthier and the result is
his finest offering yet. Sometimes
sorrowful, often hopeful, Angel
Snow’s music marries sweeping folk
melodies and bluesy guitar riffs.
Her career was kickstarted by Alison
Krauss who recorded three of her
songs, and she now works regularly
with Krauss’ writer/producer brother.

Martha Reeves and
the Vandellas
A tribute to Doris Day
Martha Reeves is Motown’s ultimate
soul diva. During her time with The
Vandellas, they scored over a dozen
hit singles, including Nowhere To
Run, Dancing In The Street, Heatwave,
Third Finger Left Hand and Jimmy
Mac. Martha continues to perform,
both solo and with her Vandellas sisters Lois (Motown-era Vandella
since 1967) and Delphine (since mid1980s). Backed by a stunning ninepiece band, take this chance to see a
true 60s great.

Stone Cold Murder
The Tiger Lillies
by James Cawood
Orchestra Unwrapped is a specially
tailored live concert for children
aged 7-11 by the Philharmonia
Orchestra presented in partnership
with Anvil Arts. Led by music
education specialist Paul Rissmann,
the concert includes a varied
programme designed to introduce
the orchestra, its instruments and
repertoire in a dynamic, interactive
and accessible way. Schools from all
over Basingstoke and Hampshire will
gather to participate in one of the
most rewarding concerts of the year.
The Very Worst of The Tiger Lillies
The Grammy-nominated Godfathers of alternative cabaret are back on a tour
with a show celebrating 25 years of dark and deviant theatrics.
With an international reputation for being the foremost avant-garde band
in the world, Olivier Award winners The Tiger Lillies never cease to surprise,
shock and entertain with their inimitable musical style, conjuring up the
macabre magic of pre-war Berlin and fusing it with the savage edge of punk.

This tense thriller is set in deep
winter in the Lake District. Olivia and
Robert, owners of the Langstrath
Country House Hotel, are enjoying
the success of their first season
and the respite of the winter break
when their solitude is disrupted
by the appearance of Ramsay, a
lost climber looking for shelter. As
the evening unfolds, it becomes
apparent that Ramsay’s presence in
this desolate spot is anything but a
coincidence, and soon events will
take a murderous turn.

A very special celebration of the
music of the much-loved Doris
Day to mark the great lady’s 90th
birthday this year. The programme
takes in aspects of Doris’ long
and varied career, from her early
days with Les Brown and his Band
of Renown through her time
in Hollywood to her later more
pop influenced material. The
show includes many of the songs
associated with her: Secret Love,
Move Over Darling, Perhaps Perhaps

Peter Knight’s Gigspanner has been
hailed by Songlines magazine as
‘another milestone in folk’s rebirth
of cool’, although to classify these
three virtuoso performers purely as
folk musicians is to undersell them
by a long chalk.
After more than a decade in Britain,
the German Comedy Ambassador
has ‘groan’ to like puns… though
he still couldn’t eat a whole one. As
Henning’s assimilation is not yet
complete he hasn’t lost his sense
of Westphalian wonderment at the
foibles of British society.
The American singer-songwriter
comes to The Forge hot on the
release of her new CD Cowgirl
Boudoir. A creative and prolific artist,
she is well known on the music
scene and her multi-platinum songs
have been recorded by artists such
as Willie Nelson and Emmylou Harris.
A bedrock of British traditional music
is to be expected from Steeleye
Span’s erstwhile fiddle player. But,
Gigspanner’s musical reach flirts
with Eastern European, French,
Cajun, African and even Aboriginal
influences, transporting audiences
on a ‘blistering pace of a musical
world tour’ Folkcast.

Haydn Symphony no. 88
Beethoven Piano Concerto no. 5 (Emperor)
Nielsen S ymphony no. 4 (The Inextinguishable)
Martin Helmchen piano
Paavo Järvi conductor
Haydn’s symphony is a mature and impressive work, with playful fast
movements and a solemn and expressive Largo, in which trumpets and
drums make a sudden appearance. Beethoven’s last piano concerto is
his most brilliant and powerful. The two extrovert outer movements are
balanced by an inward-looking slow movement, which moves into the finale
with a simple but magical transition. The name of Nielsen’s symphony refers
to “the force of life which cannot be suppressed”. It pulsates with astonishing
musical power in the outer movements, which contrast with the more natureinspired inner two, before building to a radiant conclusion.
