the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail, including the Great Dismal
Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, or Northwest River Park. Serious
bird watchers will delight in catching a glimpse of the Swainson’s
and Wayne’s warblers, two of the most secretive and least observed
of all North American birds. Catch a “peep” of the white-throated
Sparrow, the graceful Great Egret and even the regal Bald Eagle.
Other birds of interest often seen in the Refuge include the wood
duck, barred owl, pileated woodpecker and prothonotary warbler.

Chesapeake Visitors’ Guide
2011
Prefer waterways to highways? We’ve got you covered. Paddle the
Dismal Swamp Canal or weave through bald Cyprus trees in Lake
Drummond, a 3,100-acre pristine dreamland. Not sure how to get
started? Contact any of our expert local outfitters for a guided tour
through Chesapeake’s world-class waterways. Or check out one
of the guide books written about the area, “Wild River Guide to
Dismal Swamp Water Trails” and “Wild River Guide to the
North Landing River.” Information can be found at
www.visitchesapeake.com or by calling Chesapeake
Convention & Visitors Bureau at 888-889-5551.
Fishing
Looking for a trophy to show off back home? Chesapeake is
emerging as a world-class fishing destination with access to
plenty of hot spots. More than 22 miles of fresh, salt and brackish
waterways means serious options for the angler who enjoys
variety. When water temperatures drop, speckled trout bask in
Chesapeake’s popular Hot Ditch, the premier location on the East
Coast to land a citation-size speckled trout, puppy drum and the
occasional striped bass. But winter isn’t the only time of year
for fishing Chesapeake’s waters. Each spring, anglers gather at
Northwest River Park’s stocked freshwater lake to reel in bass,
bluegill, crappie and catfish.
Trails
Elevated scenic overlooks. Endless acres of forested
wetland and wilderness. Picnic shelters, play areas, horse
shoes and volleyball nets. Nature lovers, take note – our
trails are tops. Learn more about Bells Mill Park, Great
Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and Dismal
Swamp Canal Trail, Northwest River Park and Oak Grove
Lake Park at www.visitchesapeake.com.
I didn’t know that!
Facts about the Great Dismal Swamp
National Wildlife Refuge!
Histories and Mysteries of the Great Dismal Swamp.
Don’t let the name fool you. Alive with nature, history
and a touch of mystery, the Great Dismal Swamp
National Wildlife Refuge is far from dismal.
Did you know…?
• More than 112,000 acres of forested wetlands in
southeastern Virginia comprise the Great Dismal Swamp
National Wildlife Refuge.
• At its heart is Lake Drummond, 3,100 acres and the
largest natural lake in Virginia.
• Four hours south of Washington, D.C., its canal is the
oldest (or oldest operating) artificial waterway
in America.
• Birders from around the globe flock to the Refuge
in spring and fall to witness the annual migration of
hundreds of bird species.
Golf
If golf is your game, then you’ve come to the right
place. With unmatched views and memorable courses,
Chesapeake’s golf offerings are anything but par for the
course. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just the
occasional swinger, visit our greens for the perfect balance
of sport and serenity. The city is also home to an enviable
collection of post-round hotspots that will keep you on par
for the 19th hole.

• Botanists come to view the log fern, one of the rarest
ferns in America, found more populous in the swamp
than any other location.
• The soil in the swamp is so full of organic matter that
people say it will burn for decades. The swamp’s tannic
and acidic water is said to make great moonshine.
• Edgar Allen Poe reportedly wrote parts of his famous
poem “The Raven” while traveling the canal and
overnighting on its banks.
• According to Indian folklore, the ghost of a young
bride who died just before her wedding day still haunts
Lake Drummond in the Dismal Swamp. Even today,
some brave swamp-goers report seeing a glowing light
late at night and swear they’ve caught a glimpse of the
infamous Lady of the Lake.
