Paris and the Tango
In Argentina, the word Tango seems to have first been used in the 1890s. In 1902
the Teatro Opera started to include tango in their balls. Initially tango was just one
of the many available local dances, but it soon became popular throughout society, as
theatres and street barrel organs spread it from the suburbs to the working-class
slums, which were packed with hundreds of thousands of European immigrants. The
development of the Tango had influences from the cultures of several peoples that
came together in these melting pots of ethnicities. For this reason Tango is often
referred to as the music of the immigrants to Argentina.
By 1912, dancers and musicians from Buenos Aires travelled to Europe and the first
European tango craze took place in Paris, soon followed by London, Berlin, and
other capitals.

arrondissements, one can find locals of all ages enjoying the beauty and sexiness of
this dance.
On October 3rd, the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Coconut Grove will transform its
ballroom to celebrate an Evening of Tango in Paris as a benefit event for SAHF.
We would love to see you then!
Our Vision and Mission
VISION
We envision El Salvador as a country
where all its citizens can meet their basic
human needs.
MISSION
To enhance the well-being of the
underserved people in El Salvador
through human development programs
implemented in partnership with our
in-country Foundation, FUSAL, and
other organizations.
S.A.H.F. History
In 1983, the Salvadoran American Foundation (SAF) was founded in Miami, Florida
by Mr. Luis Poma and a group of friends who were concerned about the social issues
affecting the less fortunate in El Salvador. Consequently, a sister organization,
FUSAL was also formed in-country to be the recipient and distributor of aid being
shipped from the United States.
SAF Founder, Mr. Luis Poma, speaks during our 1993 Gala
Mr. Poma was an invaluable member of the foundation’s growth and vision until his
passing in 1996. Since then, his eldest son Ricardo has led FUSAL as its President
and his youngest son, Ernesto has served as SAHF’s Vice President. The Poma
Family continuous to be one of SAHF’s most important pillars, as they generously
continue to support and carry on with the legacy that was left by Mr. Luis Poma.
Since 1997, Mr. Jose Eduardo Siman, along with the unconditional support of the
Siman Family, has served as the Foundation’s President. For the last 16 years, he
has led SAHF in its growth and has been a constant, and caring ambassador of the
Foundation’s mission.
SAHF’s efforts are furthered enhanced by the commitment of the members of the
Board, who in many instances have volunteered their time and resources since
SAHF’s inception. Additionally, we are very grateful to our network of caring and
generous donors who allow SAHF to further its mission.
SAHF President, Mr. Jose Eduardo Siman during a recent Gala
In May 2001, to reflect the work being done, the name of the Foundation was
changed to Salvadoran American Humanitarian Foundation (SAHF).
About SAHF
The
Salvadoran
American
Humanitarian
Foundation (SAHF) is a 501 ( c ) ( 3 ) not-forprofit organization whose purpose is to channel
humanitarian assistance in the form of medicines,
medical equipment and supplies, food, educational
materials, and disaster relief aid to improve the
quality of life and meet the needs of hospitals,
clinics, rural health posts, orphanages, nursing
homes and over 150,000 direct beneficiaries
throughout El Salvador.
Direct Beneficiaries
Currently our WeSUPPORT Program has an outreach extending to all 14 States of El
Salvador and provides medicines, medical supplies, medical equipment, food, shoes and
educational material to a network of nearly 750 hospitals, schools, rural health posts,
clinics, orphanages, nursing homes, other NGO’s, libraries and direct programs being run
by FUSAL. Since 1983 more than $600 million worth of this humanitarian aid has been
distributed at a historic overhead expense of less than 1%.
Within the WeSUPPORT Program SAHF aids the WeFEED and WeEMPOWER
initiatives. The first initiative fosters wellness through nutritional programs in El
Salvador. Currently, SAHF supports FUSAL’s Libras de Amor Integral Nutritional
Program which reaches 21 communities in four of El Salvador’s States and SAHF ships
approximately 10 containers of food, plus additional containers with basic medicines to
support this program’s total 160,000 beneficiaries.
Additionally, in 2013 the Proyecto Pais Program was started to promote harmonious
living in communities where the indices of youth violence is prevalent by teaching
children and youth to resolve their conflicts through sports, art and music. Here, SAHF
becomes instrumental as it sends items such as shoes, sports equipment and toys for use
within this program. Currently 18,110 children and youth participate in this program.
