As Commodore of Portaferry Sailing Club
I welcome you all to Portaferry “Sails &
Sounds Festival”.
The weekend promises to be a combination
of classic boats, skiff and junior sailing, and
free fun activities for all the family. The
highlight of the festival is the classic boat
regatta and the Brian Kennedy & McPeake
Concert in Portico the newly creative arts
and heritage Centre. Free family fun street
entertainment, crafts, dancing, exhibits
farmers market and craft stalls and much
much more. The exciting new community
event with your support will hopefully
continue for many more years to come.
Gaff Rig is a traditional sailing rig which for
centuries propelled working craft, sailing ships
and yachts alike. It is distinguished by its four
sides to the main sail, the top side being held
aloft by the ‘Gaff’, usually a wooden spar.
The Gaff Rig fell from popularity after the
more efficient Bermudian
Rig was developed

for many years until a resurgence of interest
The organising committee would like to
thank Ards and North Down Borough Council

Sailing Club, Ferguson Solictors and Airphone
Communications for their kind donations
and support. A special thank you to all the
volunteers and emergency services and the
residents of Portaferry and to anyone else
assisting with the festival.
in the older and by now almost extinct Gaff
Rig occurred in the 1960’s. The Old Gaffers
Association was formed to give a likeminded body of people a place to share the
knowledge and skills of traditionally rigged
craft, of both traditional wooden construction
and more modern materials.
As an association we also like to enjoy the
fun of the traditional sailing movement. No
boat is required (nor rejected), as all you
need is an interest in traditional craft, sailing
and a bit of craic and then you are welcome
to join the Northern Ireland contingent of
the OGA!
Youth Project
The Northern Ireland Old Gaffers Association are delighted to team up with Portaferry’s St
Columba’s College for the first ever ‘OGA Youth Project’ in conjunction with Portaferry Sails
and Sounds - Classic Boat and Music Festival. Six pupils from St Columba’s will get the
unique opportunity to have a day’s sailing experience aboard ‘Vilma’, a 60’ Topsail schooner.
Training has been provided in the school before the event by qualified instructors, who will
spend the day aboard teaching the students about the traditional vessel and the skills to
sail her. The aim is to send the students away with an experience they will never forget, and
hopefully, pursue an interest in sailing, maybe even in traditional sailing!

Since opening in 1973, Ferguson & Company has
built an exceptional reputation across all aspects
of the legal landscape.
