The outer layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, is made up of flat skin cells (called corneocytes) arranged in staggered, overlapping layers, with a dermal lipid barrier (made up of 30-50% ceramides) filling the voids between cells. The staggered, overlapping layers of the stratum corneum is very analogous to a brick wall, with the corneocytes acting like bricks, and the dermal lipid barrier acting as the cement to hold the corneocytes in place and filling the voids between them.
