____________
The university is situated on the Asian side of the
Bosphorus in Istanbul, the largest city in Europe and the
former capital of three empires – Byzantine, Eastern
Roman, and Ottoman. Istanbul is an historical center of
Islam, Judaism, and Christianity, and our aim is to
educate students as enlightened individuals, culturally
well-rounded with technical skills, fully capable of
dealing with the demands of the modern world and
challenged by the ideals of secularism, progress, and
creativity as inspired by Ataturk’s principles.

ideally removed from the daily clamour.
The Faculty of Dentistry and Yeditepe University Hospital are
located also on the Anatolian (Asian) side of Istanbul in close
proximity to the Main campus, while the Ophthalmic Care Center is

Student Services
The International Office is instrumental in assisting all the new
international students in becoming familiar with the school and active
participants in the life of the university. Whenever there is a question that
needs answering, or a guide in the right direction, the program coordinators
and student assistants provide advice, friendship, and help in finding
solutions.
New international students should make their first stop the I nternational
Office, located in the Law Faculty building on the main campus, in order to
confirm immigration status, student registration status, and receive
information on housing, restaurants, campus maps or advice on getting
around the city, as well as any and all general information.

Orientation
The International Office organizes an orientation program for the
beginning of each academic semester in order to present a general
overview of the university to new students. Here is when you learn
about all the services available on campus and you can pick up some
information about how to get around Istanbul which is very helpful for
those first few days. You will receive general info on purchasing books
and other items, student clubs and details about the campus facilities.
This is also a perfect time to meet the other exchange students and get
acquainted with our full-degree program international students.
Cultural activities and group excursions are discussed and later
organized by the International Office.
The Yeditepe Global Culture Club members and current leaders are
introduced to new students and assist in the orientation process.

English is the medium of education.
•
All academic programs are offered in English.
In addition are the following programs:
– Political Science and International Relations in French
– Business Administration and Business Informatics in German
– Arts and Design in Italian
•
Students whose foreign language skills are not adequate to undertake an
academic program, attend foreign language preparatory programs before
beginning to study in their majors.
–
•
Full-degree seeking students must either show acceptable English language test
scores (TOEFL, IELT etc) or pass the Yeditepe University English Proficiency Test
(YUEPT) before enrolling in a degree program.
Exchange students are required to demonstrate a level of proficiency in
English in order to complete the required classroom written assignments,

Academic Curriculum
2: 3 Education
Academic Curriculum
Yeditepe employs the semester-and-credit system:
•
Under this scheme, students are awarded a final degree upon completion of the
required credits corresponding to the compulsory and elective courses offered
in each program.
•
A Student Hour or Credit Hour is considered 1 hour of lecture time for a single
student per week over the course of the semester.
•
The University provides students with the opportunity to enroll in double major
or minor programs. Students who fulfill the required conditions can thus obtain
a second degree.
•
Also through international exchanges students have the opportunity for Dual
Degrees with partner institutions in the USA in specific fields, such as the
Faculty of Engineering and Architecture.
•
Each academic year will see new and different exchange programs offered in
conjunction with a changing list of partner schools, reinforcing a dynamic
learning environment.
•
Always check for the most up-to-date educational agreements.

•
Semester breaks are often scheduled around the traditional religious or
national holidays.
•
The most current dates for the upcoming academic year are posted on the
university website in August.
•

Evidence of equivalent education standard
•
•
•
•
A document called Denklik is issued by the Turkish Republic
Ministry of Education which confirms that the institute of education
attended prior to applying to a school in Turkey is considered equal
and acceptable by the Higher Education Council.
This proof of equivalency is necessary for students of all levels of
education.
Be sure to check if your high school or university is listed by the
Ministry of Education as an equal standard institution: the list is
variable with each academic year.
You can find more info about the Denklik by visiting the website of

Students independently seek off-campus housing thru the

Introduction
7 :1. 1 Exchange Programs
•
Through exchange programs, the students from YU as well as the partner
European schools are benefiting from the additional diversity in the curriculum
and have the opportunity to continue their studies throughout the year.
•
Information on the formalities for Incoming and Outgoing students are posted on
our website but detailed info on LLP (Erasmus) in Turkey can be found at
Turkish National Agency: http://www.ua.gov.tr
•
Lifelong Learning Program (LLP): the single umbrella under which the European
Commission has integrated its various educational and training initiatives. It has
a significant budget of nearly €7 billion for 2007 to 2013.
•
The sub-programs focus on different stages of education and training:
− primary / high schools
− vocational / training institutions
− higher education (university)
− adult education (or community and continual education)

Introduction
7 :1. 2 Exchange Programs
•
A vital aspect of student exchange is to ensure that credits are
smoothly transferred between institutions.
•
The European Credit Transfer System – ECTS was developed
by the European Commission in order to support and facilitate
the mobility of students within Europe and further a field. It
provides a way of measuring and comparing learning
achievements, and transferring them from one institution to
another.
•
The European community promotes inter-university cooperation
as a way of improving the quality of education.

ECTS
7 : 2 Exchange Programs
ECTS - European Credit Transfer System
•
Making student mobility more accessible is a major element in the student
exchange programs. The LLP (Erasmus) program demonstrates that
studying abroad is not only the best way to learn about other languages,
cultures, countries and ideas, but also a valuable experience and important
in academic and career development.
•
The recognition of studies and diplomas is a prerequisite for the creation of
an Open European area of education and training where students and
teachers can move without obstacles.
•
The ECTS does not regulate the content, structure or equivalence of study
programs. These issues are determined by the higher education institutions
when establishing a satisfactory basis for cooperation, through bilateral and
multilateral agreements.
•
ECTS provides the framework and tools for transparency and mutual
academic recognition.

Typical components of ECTS
•
Information guidebook which provides students and
academic staff with useful information on institutions,
faculties / departments, organization and structure of
studies and course units, and sometimes info on the
host country
•
Learning agreement that provides the study plan which
students will follow and the ECTS credits awarded when
courses are completed.
•
ECTS Transcript of Records which is a record of
learning achievements during the period abroad, in a
complete and clearly understandable form.

ECTS Credits
• A unit that measures the quantity of workload required by each
course unit, in relation to the total quantity of work necessary to
complete a full year of academic study at the institution.
• The student’s “work” includes lectures, practical work, seminars,
tutorials, fieldwork, private study –in the library or at home – and
examinations or other assessment activities.
• Based on a full student workload and not limited to contact

Resident Permits
8 : 2. 1 Study Abroad
Resident Permits – some helpful info
•
•
•
•
A resident permit grants a student the right to reside
and study in a foreign country for the duration of the
period of study.
Most countries in the world offer transit or tourist visas
for a period of 1 – 3 months.
As a semester of study is longer than 3 months,
students are advised to obtain student visas before
leaving their home country, which will entitle them to a
resident permit.
On arrival in Turkey, the student visa usually allows 30
days for the student to submit the necessay
documents and apply for a resident permit at the
police station.

Quick Translation Guide
13 :1 .1
The Turkish language is a highly inflected language, having many
prefixes and suffixes added on to the root words which can make some
words quite long compared to the average English word.
However, when words are written, they are phonetically pronounced
which is an enormous help for beginners learning this fascinating
language.
Some examples:
discotheque
traffic
book
Special letters:
ş
ç
ğ
ö
ü
diskotek
trafik
kitap
pronounced ‘sh’
pronounced ‘ch’
soft sound like ‘h’
pronounced ‘ir’ as in girl
