A Note from Greg
“Don’t Invite Them to Church ...”
That was what my friend, Rob Nash, said to me once, many years ago. Rob is now
the Interim Dean of Mercer’s McAfee School of Theology. His comment seems to
betray much of what we good church going folks have been taught all of our lives.
When you meet a neighbor, invite him to church… when a new student sits beside
you in class, invite her to church… when you meet a couple at the local gym, invite
them to church. Isn’t that the implied message we get from the pulpit to the pews?
Go out and invite others to church.
Rob remarked that you do not invite people to church. You invite them to Jesus.
Of course, inviting people to church is much easier. We can feed, entertain,
enlighten, and even enliven – all with one visit. Inviting people to Jesus, however, is
inviting others into a relationship, which means commitment, discipline, sacrifice,
relinquishing, and surrendering.
To invite another to church, any church or our church, doesn’t really require much
of us personally. To invite someone to Jesus is to share in a relationship.
What kind of church do we want to be? Do we want to be a church of people where
the journey ends at 3500 Walton Way, or a people on a journey in relationships?
It reminds me of another “pithy” saying that I have picked up along the way: “Don’t
go to church. Be the church.”
Be the church in word – all are welcome.
Be the church in mission – the world is our parish.
Be the church in love – every relationship has value.
Be the church in pursuit – inquiry is not tolerated, it is celebrated.
Be the church in worship – we gather together and celebrate.
Come to church, not because you have been invited, but because church is where
the body of Christ is made manifest in word and deed. For all of the above, and
so much more, I cherish our time together in the many opportunities to be the
church: in fellowship, in study, in work, and in worship. Thank you for letting me
be a part.
How can we not invite others into the relationship that transforms all
relationships?

Be a part of the Plus 1% Challenge
Sunday School is the heartbeat of any church. Since this is being
shared with you as part of the Plus 1% Challenge, and there are
four Sundays in most of the months of the year, you are being
challenged to increase your Sunday School attendance technically
by 25% for the remainder of this year; that’s an increase of one
Sunday per month.
The Church Nominating Committee is soliciting nominations for
a member to serve a 7-year term as a Church Trustee. This year’s
nominee would ideally have a background in insurance matters.
Send nominations to Dede Maddox, listing the member’s name and
a brief statement as to why you feel they should serve as a trustee.
The Nominating Committee is also requesting names of members
wishing to serve as messengers to the Georgia Baptist Convention.
All names for trustee or messenger should be submitted by
September 9, 2015.
We need the updated information of those serving in the military
whether stateside or deployed. Contact Jan Gary or Marcia Buck
([email protected]) or ([email protected]).

Student Ministry
It is with great joy that we introduce Josh Pinson as our Interim
Youth Director. However, Josh doesn’t really need an introduction.
He has grown up in this church, and has faithfully served the
church and youth ministry as a part of his faith journey. Josh
brings a passion for Christ and a love for our youth. We gratefully
acknowledge God’s providential hand in calling Josh for such a
time as this.
‘‘I am very humbled and excited as I consider what lies ahead
both for our youth and me personally. My prayer is that this will
be a time of spiritual growth for us all. We serve a mighty God!
My intent is to clearly share with our young people His love, His
sacrifice, and His redemptive plan for each of us. Our Student
Ministry, my family, and I covet your prayers during this time.”
Josh Pinson

and a challenging sermon with an altar call. All men, women,
and children attending will receive a new coat. Training sessions
available prior to this event. 2300 warm coats have been ordered
- your help is needed to pay for them. A $20 donation will provide

the Bridge Ministry. Every Saturday, a service with a hot meal is
provided under the 15th Street Bridge. We average around 250
attending each week. Check out the FBC web site under Serve/
Community for information on how you can be involved. Join

always needed.
Did you know - giving to the Green Envelope allows our church to
offset the cost for our Mission Trips? Did you know giving to the
Green Envelope supports local ministries through sponsorships
granted through the Mission Development Council? Did you
know giving to the Green Envelope supports SBC & CBF mission
offerings? Did you knowYOU can make a difference? Did you know
if we all gave $1/week over and above our budget commitments,
we could raise over $100k for missions this year?
