Logan has talent to improve this season
[email protected]
Despite last year’s 2-8
record by the Logan High
School football team,
Gary Mullins thought his
squad was close to being
a pretty decent football
team.
With plenty of starters
and talent coming
back from last year, the
Wildcats hope to turn the
corner this fall.
The pieces seem to
be in place for Coach
Mullins and the Wildcats
for improvement.
Many Logan players
are returning this fall
from last year’s young
team, however, recordbreaking quarterback
Ryan Miller, as well
as top receiver Zac
Acord and some other
top skilled position
players, have been lost to
graduation.
The Cats started last
year with a disappointing
32-26 loss in overtime
to Class A rival Man at
home.
Logan then beat Shady
Spring 33-13 at home and
went to Hamlin in Week
3, winning 44-14 over the
Lincoln County Panthers.
After the 2-1 start,
Logan lost its last seven
games. In the losing skid,
the Cats lost another
overtime game to their
other county rival,
Chapmanville, 48-42.
It will be a new era for
Logan Wildcats football
this fall, as well as their
county counterparts at
Man and Chapmanville
Regional with the
installation of the new
Field Turf at all three
locales.
Logan’s goals are set.
“We want to win the
county championship,”
said Mullins, Logan’s
12th-year coach. “We
were two extra points
away last year from
becoming the county
champion in two
overtime games. We were
right there. We could
have been 6-4 last year
just as easily as we were
2-8. The two other games
that we lost to Nitro and
Greenbrier East were
other games that we
had shots at. It’s going
to come down to two or
three plays.”
Logan has made it
to five of the school’s
all-time six playoff
appearances under
Mullins, since he took the
reigns of the program in
2004.
The Cats, though, are
0-6 overall in the postseason, also taking a loss
back in 1990.
Logan would like to
change that.
“We also want to make
it to the playoffs and
win our first-ever playoff
game,” Mullins said.
“We’re looking to turn
this around this year and
make the plays that we
need to make at the end
of the game to win.”
Mullins, 36, became
Logan’s head coach 12
years ago at the age of
just 24. He’s been with
the program for 17 years
counting the time he
was an assistant and also
the head coach at Logan
Middle School.
More than a decade
later, he’s built the
Wildcats into a football
program. He’s hoping
that last year was just a
minor hiccup.
“It doesn’t seem real
that it’s been 17 years.
You can’t really put into
words how fast time
flies,” Mullins said. “I’ve
been coaching a long
time that’s for sure. We
hope that we can turn
this around this year.”
OFFENSE
At quarterback, Logan
will have to replace
Miller, who threw for
2,455 yards and 24
touchdowns last year.
Heading into the
season opener at Man,
Mullins said he doesn’t
have a set starter.
Daniel Browning, a
junior, could have the
inside track. Last year in
backup duties, Browning
was an accurate passer as
he completed 11-for-12
passes for 162 yards and
three TDs.
Brian Farley, a junior,
is also capable of playing
QB.
Alex Toler, a basketball
and baseball standout at
Logan and a left-hander,
is another quarterback.
This is his first year with
the football team.
At running back,
Logan is solid with the
tandem of senior starters
Devonta Tolliver and
Matt Cox. Tolliver is

Returning to Logan’s
football team at wide
receiver is junior Skyler
Miller, who has battled
leukemia the last few
years.
Tolliver, Tyler
Browning and Hensley
could also see time at
receiver when not in the
backfield. Tolliver had 15
catches last year for 93
yards and a TD.
“We put all of the backs
out there,” Mullins said.
Terrance Chapman, a
sophomore, gives Logan
even more depth at wide
receiver. Jude can also
play wideout.

Logan’s leading returning
rusher as he ran for
678 yards last season
on 114 carries and six
touchdowns. Cox had 46
carries for 238 yards and
a TD last year. Cox was
also deployed as a wide
receiver last year and
finished with 25 catches
for 442 yards and five
more TDs.
Logan will look to
unleash Tolliver and Cox
this fall.
Both have the potential
to have breakout seasons
and could be the focus of
Logan’s offensive scheme.
“Devonte is as good a
back as I’ve had since I’ve
been here,” Mullins said.
“He learned last year how
to play football. Now, my
goodness, look at him.
I told my wife that I’m
not sure how they are
going to get him on the
ground. When you watch
him run by you he’s just a
mountain of a man.”
Tolliver and Cox
complement each other
well.
Tolliver is more of a
power back with speed,
while Cox is more of a
speed back with power.
“Devonte is very agile
and strong and Cox is
so fast,” Mullins said. “I
think in Cox’s combines
this summer he ran a
4.43 40-yard dash. That’s
legit speed. He’s been
a great player here for
years. It seems like he’s
been here about seven
years.”
Sophomore Devin
Hensley may also see
time in the backfield.
Tyler Browning, a
junior tailback, who had
a handful of carries last
year, is also pressing for
playing time at running
back.
Freshman Trey Jude is
another player in Logan’s
deep backfield.
Just like last year
and depending on the
formation, Cox could also
see time at wide receiver
or in the slot.
“He’s very versatile,”
Mullins said. “He
can play about any
position on offense. He’s
explosive. There is not
anybody that we play
that will be any more
explosive than he is.”
Jamal Minter could be
Logan’s go-to receiver
before it’s all said and
done. He just had one
catch for 31 yards last
year as Acord, Cox,
Brenton Vance and
Cameron Sammons got
the majority of grabs.
“Last year was his first
year,” Mullins said of
Minter. “It took him a
little time to learn how
to play football. By the
end of the year he really
got it.”

Mullins said.
Chase Burnette, a 6-3
basketball and baseball
player, is out for football
and gives Logan a tall
target to throw to at tight
end. Cody Maynard, a
starter on defense, is also
in the mix at tight end.
Daniel Browning, if
not playing quarterback,
is also capable of playing
tight end, Mullins said.
“We’ve got a lot of guys
that we can interchange,”
Mullins said.
On the offensive line,
Logan has experience
and has starters back.

tackles, a fumble recovery
and a pass breakup, is
also a returning starter to
the D-line.
Ryan Ellis, Gavin Ellis
and Adkins may also see
time on the defensive
side.
Jordan Oney, who had
19 tackles, a sack and a
caused fumble, started
last year on the defensive
line and also returns.
“We have got a lot of
guys back,” Mullins said.
“We have a lot of guys
back who played last year.
We were 2-8 last year and
had some inexperience
but these guys are a lot
different this year.”
Maynard returns
as a starter at middle
linebacker. He had 16
tackles, an interception
and a pass breakup last
year.
“We started him at the
Mike in the Chapmanville
game but he broke his
hand. Andrew Reynolds
and Justin Taylor were as
good of inside linebackers
that I’ve ever had and he’s
right there with them,”
Mullins said of Maynard.
“He’s a good Mike
linebacker.”
Tolliver, who may play
Iron Man on both sides
of the football, will also
see time at linebacker,
Mullins said.
Hensley is also
expected to see time at
linebacker along with
Shawntez Matthews.
“We’ve been so
impressed with
Matthews,” Mullins said.
“He’s just a freshman,
but, my goodness, that
kid is not afraid of
nobody. He flies in there
and he’s always around
the ball. He’s always
making plays and he
doesn’t back down from
anybody.”
Daniel Browning, who
had 25 total tackles and
an interception, may
play some as well at
linebacker, along with
Burnette.
“Daniel started some
last year on defense
and he’s a guy that can
probably play 60 percent
of the positions on the
defensive side of the
ball,” Mullins said. “Any
guy that can move around
like that really helps you
out a lot.”
Logan is also deep in
the secondary.
Tyler Browning, the
Wildcats’ leading tackler
last fall is back. He had
71 tackles in 2014 with
two pass breakups, two
caused fumbles and a
fumble recovery.
Alex Toler goes back to pass in Logan’s preseason scrimmage against Paintsville (Ky.) and Tug Valley at Magoffin County High School
in Salyersville, Ky.
Minter, who had 27
stops, three breakups
and a fumble recovery,
also is back.
Daniel Browning
(25 tackles and one
interception) returns
as well to the defensive
secondary along with
Cox (28 tackles, one
INT and six pass
breakups) and Nate
Smith (33 tackles and
three breakups) are other
returning starters.

Coleman (12 tackles)
give Logan even more
depth in the defensive
backfield.
“Coleman will play
some at wide receiver
but he’s more of a
defender,” Mullins said.
“He’ll play some outside
linebacker and some at
safety. He’s a guy that
you like because he’s
worked his butt off to
get into the game. Now
he’s a senior and he’s
worked for three years.
It’s paid off and now he’s
going to get to play some
football.”
Miller may also play
some in the secondary as
well as Trice Boatwright.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Chris Watkins is
Logan’s likely kicker.
He split kicking duties
last year with Jacob
Browning and was 1-for-3
in extra point tries.
“He goes to kicking
camps and he goes up to
West Virginia’s kicking
camp every year. He
kicked some for us last
year,” Mullins said. “He’s
got a chance to win all
three jobs — the kicker,

Augustine ChukwuNoe, a basketball player,
is making his debut in
football this fall and may
also kick, Mullins said.
He is a wide receiver
and outside linebacker
as well.
“He can kick, too,
and he’s got a big leg,”
Mullins said. “He’s not
as seasoned as Chris is.
It’s an open competition,
though, and they are thre
two front-runners.”
With Logan’s new Field

improve Logan’s kicking
game as kickers won’t
have to worry about
slipping plant foots on a
muddy field.
“We’re not going to
have to worry about
horrible conditions,”
Mullins said. “The snaps
should be good.”
McDonald and Jordan
Brenniger are Logan’s
long snappers.
“Brenniger will also
see time on the offensive
and defensive lines.
He’s a freshman but he’s
a good lineman, too,”
Mullins said.

A tradition of winning to continue at Scott
By Fred Pace

MADISON —
“Forever happens now”
is the three word slogan
for the 2015 varsity
boys’ football team at
Scott High School.
“For these young me,
maybe 20 years down
the road at a reunion or
with old friends, they
will look back at their
time playing football for
Scott High School and
remember these times.
What they do today,
defines them forever.”
Scott Skyhawks Head
Coach Shane Griffith
has built a tradition
of winning, which
may put pressure on
many coaches, but it is
welcomed by Griffith.
“I enjoy the grip of
expectation on this
football program,”
Griffith said. “We
approach things
very differently here.
Motivation is easy when
you are at the bottom
because the only way
to go is up. However,
expectations come with
Black and Gold football.
This team, this school
and this community
expect to win. Our job
is to stay focused and
honor the traditions
of this program, which
are to be committed,
prepare hard and play
the entire game.”
Scott is coming off
a playoff year and
has made the playoffs
nearly each season that
Griffith has been the
head coach.
“It is easy to become
a victim of a good
program’s success,” he
said. “We raised this
from the ground up
with the community
playing a large part and
we have grown this into
an anticipation each
year for football and
for winning football at
Scott.”
The years team
is slighter more in
numbers, even after
graduating 21 seniors
last from last year.
“Under that scenario,
most coaches would
just be looking to field a
team, but we are always
ready to compete and
make the playoffs,” said
Griffith.
Only three seniors
are returning from last
year’s squad, but they
will play a vital role
in the team’s success,
according to Griffith.
Cody Loftus, a
fullback on offense
and a linebacker on
defense, as well as
Jacob Bratcher, center
and defensive end, and
Adam Matthews, an
offensive and defensive
lineman will lead the
young Skyhawks.
“They will carry a
heavy burden, but they
have been there and will
lead with experience,”
the coach said.
The team has about
14 juniors that the
coach describes as “very
athletic.”
“We really worked a
lot in the weight room
this year to generate
power and speed,”
Griffith explained. “We
think we have done it.
We are not physically
big, but very athletic,
fast and powerful.”
Griffith says Garrett
Roberts returns for
his junior season
after rushing for well
over 1,000 yards as a
sophomore. Roberts is
the younger brother of
Jordan Roberts, who
is considered to most
Scott’s greatest football
player of all time.
“We think Garrett

said. “It has guys with

of attitude. These are a
bunch of hard working
guys that are becoming

The Skyhawks are
in Class AA’s tough

This year’s schedule
includes six projected

making the playoffs.
“It’s not about going
10-0 in the regular
season,” Griffith said.
“It’s about handling the
roller coaster ride of
the season and staying
committed to the
purpose of making the
playoffs. Once in the
playoffs, everyone starts
with a fresh record and
it becomes about going
to Wheeling.”

Tigers are hoping to knock on playoff door
By Paul Adkins
[email protected]
CHAPMANVILLE — For
years the Chapmanville Regional
High School football team
enjoyed winning seasons and
playoff runs.
The last three years, however,
the Tigers have slipped to
mediocrity with 4-6, 5-5 and 4-6
seasons.
The last time Chapmanville
had a winning season and were in
the Class AA playoffs was back in
2011 when CRHS won 10 games
and reached the Double-A state
semifinals.
The Tigers hope to break out of
that funk this fall.
It won’t be easy, however.
Playing in the Cardinal
Conference it never is.
Last year, Chapmanville went
3-0 in non-conference games,
including wins over rivals Man
(26-20 in 2OT) and Logan (4842 in OT) to win the county
championship, but were just 1-6
in Cardinal play with the lone win
coming over the winless Poca
Dots (34-14).
Chapmanville hopes to turn the
corner this season and make it
back into the playoff chase.
“It’s a tough conference,”
Coach Barker said. “Week in and
week out our non-conference
opponents have been pretty
good. We won four ballgames
last year and two of them were in
overtime. We had to bite, scratch
and claw to get there. Nothing
came easy.”
After an 0-3 start to the 2014
season, Chapmanville won four
straight to get back into the
picture but then lost the last three
to finish below .500.
“We started off the season
0-3 and we bounced back and
made the end of the year mean
something,” Barker said. “We’ve
been close. We were 17th or 18th
and were just a shade out of the
playoffs.”
There’s a lot of excitement
brewing around Chapmanville
and Logan County this fall
because of the newly installed
Field Turf.
The football fields at
Chapmanville, Man and Logan
are all getting carpeted with Field
Turf as part of a $2.5 million joint
project which was funded by
the Logan County Commission
and the Logan County Board of
Education.
OFFENSE
The good news for
Chapmanville is that the Tigers
have plenty of returning starters
and talent back from last year’s
team.
The Tigers are led by senior
starting quarterback Alex Berry.
Berry was the leading passer
in the Cardinal Conference last
year as he completed 105-of-191
passes (55 percent) for 1,352
yards with 12 touchdowns and
nine interceptions.
“I believe Alex Berry has been
the conference’s leading passer
two straight years,” Barker said.
“We have a kid who is a coach’s
son and has been in our program
forever. He’s a great kid. He
understands the game and makes

to play some defense for us but
we don’t know how much that’s

he’s in the top 11 but we don’t

The Tigers have two capable
backups at QB with sophomore
Adam Vance and freshman
lefthander Sam Craddock.
At running back, the Tigers
lost Devin Wiley (115 carries
for 643 yards and four TDs) to
graduation but return leading
rusher and senior Tanner Dillon.
Dillon ran for 789 yards on
151 carries and scored nine
touchdowns a year ago as a
junior. On defense, Dillion had 95
total tackles last year with a sack
and a fumble recovery.

Sherman Tide expects to take home many wins
By Fred Pace
[email protected]
SETH — Coming off a
one win season, Sherman
Tide varsity boys’ football
head coach J.D. Fairchild II
says this year’s team has no
where to go but up.
“We expect to win,”
Fairchild said. “We have
to make them believe that
they can win. They have
the talent, strength and
speed. They just have to go
out there on the field and
do it.”
Fairchild says one way he
is going to accomplish his
goal of having a winning
team is to bring back the
old Sherman Tide football
traditions.
“In the past, Sherman
High football players have
always been known for
being strong kids that hit
hard and play with pride,”
he said. “We are going to
get back to the old ways
around here.”
One way is doing it in
the weight room.
“We are lifting lots of
weights,” Fairchild said.
“We lifted in the off season,
we are lifting before
practice and we feel it’s
that important. This team
is much faster and stronger
than last year’s squad.”
Fairchild said last year’s
team was in most games
through the first half, but
just let games slip away
in the last two quarters of
play.
“We just could close
out games,” he said. “Just
some bad breaks and not
staying focused the entire
game.”
Fairchild lost two
coaches he had been with
for 25 years.
“We are going to have
some new assistants this
year,” he said. “They
helped out last year and
all of them are Sherman
Tide graduates and
former Tide football
players.”
Assistant coaches
include Michael
Showalter, Dustin Trail
and Kevin Buzzard.
The Tide offense is
expected to be lead by
senior runningback
Kyle Davis and junior
quarterback Bailey Kirk.
“Kyle is running hard
and seeing the holes
really well,” Fairchild
said. “Bailey is throwing
real well and reading
defenses.”
A core of receivers that
includes Jacob Barnett,
Austin Cooper, Will
Hensley, J.T. Hensley,
Jordan Clark, Tyler Pettry,
Josh Priestley, Adam
Miller, Dustin Harvey,
John Dickens, Corey
Pristley Logan Kauff,
Cordell Parsons, Lance
Hudson, Jarred Vickers
and Seth Rinchich gives
Kirk plenty of weapons to
pass the ball.
Willen Christian,
Nate Dickens, Tommy
Harper, Claude West, Ben
Salmon, Phillip Casto and
Aaron Hensley will also
give depth behind Davis
at runningback.
This year’s Sherman
Tide offensive line is a
little bigger than last year,
Fairchild added.
“We have Logan
Buzzard and Joseph
Thomas on the leftside,
Chase Buzzard at center
and two new starters on
the right side, including
300 pound freshman
Layne Daniel,” said
Fairchild.
Fairchild’s defense will
operate out of his 3-4
scheme.
“I have been running a
3-4 defense for 25 years, I
don’t think I am going to
change it,” he said.
The defense features
linebackers Nate Dickens
and Ben Salmons, along
with bookend outside
linebackers John Dickens
and Cordell Parsons.
“We have speed and
strength at linebacker and
those guys are finding the
ball quickly and making
plays,” Fairchild said.
The Tide are returning
all of its defensive backs
from last season.
“We are hoping their
experience is going to pay
off this year,” Fairchild
added.
Fairchild also
mentioned Tide nose
guard Kazz Workman.

pound junior is expected
to be a force in the center
of the Sherman defense.
“He is just brut strong,”
the coach said. “We are
very excited about what
he has the potential to do
this season.”
Sherman has a very
tough schedule again
this season. Eight of the
team’s 10 oppenents this
season had a winning or
.500 record last year.
“We open up with
Tug Valley at Tug, so we
should know right off
the bat where we stand,”
Fairchild said. “We had
them on the ropes last
season and let them
slip away. This year we
plan to go there with
confidence and expect to
win.”

Johnson looks for another great year at Marshall
By John Raby
AP Sports Writer
HUNTINGTON, W.Va.
(AP) — Marshall running
back Devon Johnson believes
blocking is still his best
attribute.
He may want to rethink
that if he has another solid
year carrying the ball for the
Thundering Herd.
Nicknamed Rockhead
for his bruising style, the
244-pound Johnson’s move
to the backfield a year
ago from backup tight end
was intended to provide
protection for quarterback
Rakeem Cato. But Johnson
showed he could do some
special things, too.
Despite missing most
of three games late in
the season with knee and
shoulder injuries, Johnson
finished with 1,767 rushing
yards, the second-best single
season in school history.
The senior should be the
focal point of the offense this
season with Cato gone.
“I’m happy if the team is
happy,” Johnson said. “I’m
happy as long as the coach is
happy. That’s all I want is for
this team to win and achieve
its goals.”
Johnson helped Marshall en
route to its first Conference
USA championship. He
took pride in the fact that
opposing defenses didn’t blitz
as much when he was in the
backfield blocking.
“I think it helps our
passing game and helps our
quarterback to sit in the
pocket calmly,” he said.
Of course, he was happy
with his running, too — more
specifically, he was proud
of his linemen for opening
gaping holes.
“They made my job a
whole lot easier than what it
was,” he said. “I just ran hard
for them because they were
blocking hard for me.”
Some things to watch for
at Marshall, which is looking
for its third straight season of
double-digit wins:
NEW QB: With the recordsetting Cato now playing
in the CFL, Marshall is
breaking in a new starting
quarterback. James Madison
transfer Michael Birdsong
won the job in the spring
over backup Gunnar
Holcombe and two freshmen.
The 6-foot-5 Birdsong
played 20 games in in two
seasons at Championship
Subdivision member James
Madison, including 14 starts.
He threw for 3,206 yards
and 26 touchdowns with 16
interceptions.
THE SCHEDULE
Marshall went 13-1 a year
ago and missed out on a
chance to play in a marquee
New Year’s bowl, due in
part to what some viewed
as an easy schedule. The
schedule doesn’t appear
to get much tougher this
season. Marshall will host
a school from the Big Ten
for the first time when
Purdue visits in the season
opener on Sept. 6. There
are nonconference road
games against Mid-American
Conference members Ohio
and Kent State, sandwiched
around a home matchup
with Championship
Subdivision member Norfolk
State. Marshall has tough
conference tests Nov. 7 at
Middle Tennessee and Nov.
27 at Western Kentucky. The
Hilltoppers handed Marshall
its only loss last season.
Also gone is Tommy
Shuler, who set Conference
USA and Marshall’s career
records for receptions,
including 18 in his final
game in a Boca Raton Bowl
win over Northern Illinois.
The top returning receivers
are sophomore Deon-Tay
McManus with 26 catches
for 422 yards and six scores
and Davonte Allen with 22
catches for 544 yards and
four scores.
DEFENSE QUESTIONS
Marshall lost six starters
on defense, including three
linemen, two linebackers
including leading tackler
Neville Hewitt, and standout
cornerback Darryl Roberts.
The defense can’t afford to
have another lapse like it did
in the 67-66 overtime loss to
Western Kentucky in which it
allowed Brandon Doughty to
throw for 491 yards and eight
scores.
FAST NEWCOMER
Freshman cornerback
Antonio Howard’s nickname
is Speedy, as it should be.
He’s the son of former
West Virginia wide receiver
Antonio Brown, who played
for the Mountaineers from
1998-2001. “His dad was
extremely explosive and
fast,” said Marshall coach
Doc Holliday, a WVU
assistant when Brown was a
player. “Speedy tells me he
can outrun his dad. But his
dad could still outrun him.”

Bulldogs have big expectations for the season
By Fred Pace

VAN — Last season,
the Van Bulldogs were
described as a young
team. They started
the season 0-4, but the
young Bulldogs caught
fire and won five of its
last six games to finish
with an overall 5-5
record.
“By the end of last
year, we had gained lots
of experience and we
were playing as good as
anyone in Class A,” said
Van Head Coach Steve
Price.
This year, the
team returns all of
its starting offensive
players and all but two
on the defensive side of
the ball. It also includes
a transfer player and
two freshman.
“We are very excited
about this year’s team,”
Price said. “This is the
group we have been
waiting on. We are
expecting a big year.”
Van is returning
sophomore runningback
Brady Grant. He was
somewhat of a freshman
sensation last year after
recording over 1,400
rushing yards.

year,” Price said. “No
doubt about it.”
Logan Crouse is
expected to return
as the team’s staring
quarterback.
“Logan’s experience
and knowledge of
our offense gives him
a great opportunity
this season,” Price
explained. “He is a
smart guy with talent
and speed.”
Price says that even
though many players
are returning, everyone
must earn their position
on the team.
“Returners have to
work just a hard as the
new guys,” he said.
“We want players that
remain hungry and
work hard to get on the
field.”
Van is not a big team,
Price admits, but it
uses multiple sets and
a high power passing
game, if needed. The
offensive line returns
several starters, but
they are still somewhat
undersized against
some teams.
“There are things
we’re going to do
regardless, but
depending on our
opponent each week, we
will have multiple sets
on the offensive side
of the ball,” according
to Price. “We know
there are some teams
we just can’t lineup

On defense, the

senior Jordan Hartwell,
a defensive lineman,
returns. Hartwell has

Price will also return to

touchdowns in the Logan
game last year,” Barker
said. “We found out last
year that running Tanner
inside was good for us.
He’s a good, hard-nosed
football player. He’s one
of those tough guys. He’s
a warrior and he plays on
both sides of the ball. It’s
hard to keep him out of
there. He’s a great kid.”
Barker said the Tigers
also have another good
running back in Dylan
Smith, who saw spot
duty on offense last year
with five carries for 26
yards and a touchdown.
“We’ve got Dylan
Smith. We had his
brother a few years
ago,” Barker said. “He’s
a sophomore and he’s
grown up quite a bit.
He’s going to see a lot of
action at tailback. We’re
going to mix things up
here and there. He’s got
great speed and he can
move around.”
Senior Will Seigman (7
carries, 18 yards) is also
back and is expected to
see much more action in
the backfield.
“Will Seigman is a
senior. He’s got good
speed and we’re looking
for him to play some for
us,” Barker said.
Ryan Craddock, Ethan
Neace, Seth Whitt,
Dylan Renniger and
Brennan Williams give
Chapmanville even more
depth at running back.
“Ryan Craddock
played JV ball and he’s in
there along with Ethan
Neace,” Barker said.
“Ethan has had some
spot play here and there.
He’s a defensive player
but he’s being asked to
take on more of a role
on offense. We also have
a freshman fullback in
Seth Whitt. We also have
Dylan Renniger, who is a
freshman running back,
and Brennan Williams,
another freshman.”
Barker said some
of his wide receivers
could get carries as
well, depending on the
formation and scheme.
“We’re also looking
to get some of our wide
receivers in our running
game, too,” he said.
“Ethan Thompson is out.
He’s been in track. He’s
got good speed. Jacob
Dingess may also get
some carries. We have to
find a way to get him the
ball.”
At wide receiver,
Chapmanville is solid
with the return of senior
Jacob Dingess, the
Cardinal Conference’s
No. 1 wideout from last
year. Dingess caught 44
passes for 702 yards and
eight touchdowns last
year.
“Jacob has that blazing
speed and and a little bit
of wiggle to him,” Barker
said. “The thing about
Jacob that separates him
from the others is that he
really wants to get down
field and put the ball
in the end zone. You’re
going to have to make a
tackle on him. We have
to find a way to get him
the ball in space and let
his athletic ability take
over.”
The Tigers lost
receivers Zac Casto
and Tyler Neil to
graduation but will look
to newcomer Ethan
Thompson to help pick
up the slack. Thompson,
a senior, comes over to
the football team from
the CRHS track squad
and the Chapmanville
braintrust are hoping he
can turn his sprinter’s
speed into long
touchdown catch-andruns this fall.
Smith may also see
time at WR, Barker
said, along with Billy
Sheppard.
Noah Dingess, C.J.
Dalton, Kade Elkins and
even Vance could also
contribute at wideout.
Freshman Ethan Ferrell
and Peyton Hensley and
Austin Butcher even add
more to Chapmanville’s
deep receiving corps.
On the offensive line,
the Tigers are very strong
on the left side as center
Evan Willis (6-0, 205), a
sophomore, returns along
with Blake Dalton (5-10,
255) and Ricky Combs
(6-0, 280) who are also
back.
All three will protect
QB Berry’s blind side.
Brothers Alex Oxley
(6-1, 225) and Phillip
Oxley (6-1, 245) are
also hoping to compete
for the open starting
jobs on the right side of
Chapmanville’s O-Line.
Corey McGraw (6-3,
245) and Kobe Meade
(6-4, 235) are also
pressing for a starting job
on the offensive front.
Andy Bias (5-11,
205) is also looking to
contribute to the line.
Tim Bigley (6-2, 245)
gives Chapmanville
another sizable lineman
to turn to.
Transfer Ethan
Hamilton (6-3, 245) gives
the Tigers even more
depth in the trenches.
Devin Perry (6-0, 265)
and Hunter Adkins (5-11,
225) are pressing for
playing time.
DEFENSE
Coach Barker said the
Tigers’ defensive line
starting jobs are open
heading into the season.
“Most of the guys that
played for us a lot on the
defensive line graduated,”
Barker said. “Most of the
people on the D-line will
be newcomers.”
Neace, Combs, Bigley,
McGraw and others seem
to have the inside track.
Neace had 23 tackles
last year with a sack and
three fumble recoveries,
including a 16-yard return
for a TD in the Poca
game. Combs had 16
tackles last year with a
sack and fumble recovery.
Sunday, August 30, 2015 11A
“Ethan Neace is going
to be playing in the
defensive front along
with Ricky Combs,”
Barker said. “Bigley and
McGraw will also be up
there. We just have to find
the right mix. We might
end up playing nine or
10 different players up
there. It just depends on
who is playing offense
and their conditioning
and their ability to play.
Meade is another one
who has an opportunity to
play. Michael Craddock is
another one. He’s a senior.
Phillip Oxley, too.”
At linebacker, Dillon
returns. Dillion had
95 total tackles last
year (62 solo and 31
assisted) with a sack and
a fumble recovery and is
Chapmanville’s leading
returning tackler. The
graduated Matt Dingess
had one more total tackle
with 96 stops last year and
five sacks.
“Tanner Dillon is back,”
Barker said. “He was a
starter last year and we’ve
got Ryan Craddock who
will see a lot of action.
Evan Willis played a little
at linebacker last year.
We moved Butcher from
free safety to linebacker.
We have out six inside
linebackers. Another
linebacker is freshman
Seth Whitt. We think he
can play.”
Alex Oxley, Bias, Whitt,
Tyler Barcklay, Chance
Mullins and Kelton
McNeely are battling for
playing time, Barker said.
Oxley finished with
47 tackles and a fumble
recovery last year.
“We’re going to go to a
little bit different scheme
this year,” Barker said.
In the secondary,
Thompson, Smith, Jacob
Dingess, Noah Dingess,
Sheppard, Whitt and
others are in the mix.
Smith had 11 tackles
and a caused fumble last
year. Dingess had seven
stops and an interception.
Sheppard finished with 35

Billies hope to start strong, finish strong
By Paul Adkins

MAN The
motto for the 2015
version of the Man High
School football team
is “start strong, finish
strong.”
The Billies were ram
tough at the start of the
2014 season, beating
Class AAA rival Logan
32-26 in OT on the road
in the season opener
and then rolling to a
6-2 record after eight
games.
Man was then saddled
with injuries, falling
at home to Tug Valley
on Halloween Night,
then getting upset on
the road at Van in the
finale.
The Hillbillies closed
out with three losses
and a 6-5 record as
Tug Valley beat Man
again 16-12 in the first
round of the Class A
state playoffs at Mingo
Central.
Man seems to have
all the tools to have
yet another successful
season.

playoff contest against
the Panthers. Keffer
was 65-for-128 passing
(50.8 percent) last year
for 1,191 yards with 13

Keffer, a 6-foot,
229-pounder, gives Man
the complete package
with his leadership,
a strong throwing
arm, good decisionmaking and a QB who
is capable of tucking
it and running for big
yards.
“He understands the
game,” Arms said of
Keffer. “He can come
to you on the sideline
and tell you what is
going on and what
the situation is on the

has really matured in
his football knowledge.
What he sees out
there he understands.
Everyone who plays the
game don’t all really do
that but he does. He
knows what is going on
in front of him.”
Keffer has really
stepped up Man’s
passing game in his
tenure.
Often times in the
past, the Billies were
usually only a thirdand-long passing team
out of necessity. With
Keffer, he can spread
out the defenses with
his pinpoint passing.
“He can do anything
on the field really.
He can play any

we really need him at

said. “He’s thrown

around player for us.”
Backing up Keffer at
quarterback are junior
Buren Maynard and
freshman Zach Cook.
To replace Mullins
and Rowe at running
back Man has plenty of
candidates, including
senior Jace Duba (5-10,
197), who ran for 129
yards on 34 carries and
scored two touchdowns
last year. In the Van
game, he had 21 rushes
for 120 yards and the
two scores.
Jake Frye (5-10, 231),
a junior, who ran for 149
yards on 29 carries and
had an 83-yard game
against Van, also returns
at running back.
“Duba and Frye have
run the ball well at
practice,” Arms said.
“We don’t have what
you call break-away
speed but they are good
running backs. All of
our running backs have
run hard, they pick up
the holes, make good
cuts and have been
tough and physical.
That’s what we need
them to be.”
Tyler Blair (5-10,
200), another junior,
gives Man another
power back.
Dustin McCoy (5-11,
190), still another
junior, will also be
looked upon to carry
some of the load in the
backfield as well. Chase
Harvey (5-10, 178), a
sophomore, gives Man
some depth.
At wide receiver, Man
has senior Ross Osborne
(6-0, 163), who returns.
He’s the Billies’ leading
returning receiver as he
had 16 catches for 202
yards and a touchdown
last year.
“We’ve got some kids
that look like they are
really going to develop,”
Arms said. “We’ve got
Ross Osborne back, who
caught a lot of balls for
us last year.”
Man will also look
to senior wideout Jake
Adkins, who gives the
Billies a tall target at
6-3.
“He played for us last
year but he didn’t play
for us at receiver that
much but he’s a talented
athlete and he’s on our
basketball team,” Arms
said of Adkins. “He’s
been catching the ball
well at practice.”
Matt Sanders, a
junior, gives Man
another option to throw
to as well as senior
Gabby Brown and
sophomore Trey Whitt.
“We’ve got some
receivers that are
looking pretty good,”
Arms said.
Adkins can also play
tight end, depending
on Man’s formation.
Freshman Tyler Elkins
is another tight end for
the Billies.
Man has experience
and size on its offensive
line, led by senior
center and returning
starter Grant Gambill,
who stands 6-2 and
weighs in at 302
pounds.
Tyler Vance (5-11,
247), a senior, also
returns to Man’s big
offensive line. He
started some for Man
last year.
Starting offensive
guard Kayne Brown
(5-10, 278), a junior, is
also back for the Billies.
Senior offensive tackle
Richie Nelson (6-2,
204), another starter,
also returns.
Christian McCoy (6-1,
258), a senior and one
of Man’s top defensive
linemen, may also see
some action on the
O-line if needed, Arms
said.
Austin Compton (6-2,
264), a senior offensive
guard, only adds to
Man’s depth in the
trenches as does junior
Austin Bragg (6-2, 223).
Man also has a pair of
linemen in senior James
Roberts and junior
Jacob Asbury, who both
exceed 300 pounds.
“We’ve got some good
depth and experience
along the offensive
line,” Arms said.
loss, a fumble recovery
and a pass breakup.
“He’s probably our
toughest defensive
lineman,” Arms said of
McCoy.
Kayne Brown also
doubles as a defensive
lineman.
Vance, Compton (34
tackles, two sacks) and
Bragg are also pressing
for playing time on the
D-line.
“Several of our
lineman on the offensive
side of the ball can slip
over and play on the
defensive line as well for
us,” Arms said.
Senior Tanner Bailey
(6-2, 187), who had 58
tackles last year, leads
the returning linebacker
corps for Man.
“He’s been a two-year
starter for us,” Arms
said of Bailey.
Duba, who had 64
tackles last year with
seven QB sacks, an
interception and two
fumble recoveries,
returns as the Billies’
starting middle
linebacker.
Blair, who had 46
tackles and a pick last
year, will also see some
inside linebacker duties
for the Billies this fall as
well, Arms said.
Nick Collins (6-1,
179), a junior, is
battling for time at
outside linebacker.
He had 12 tackles and
two interceptions last
year one of which
was returned for a
touchdown in the Logan
game. Nelson, Gabby
Brown and Elkins will
also see time on the
outside.
Man’s starting
cornerbacks return in
the defensive secondary
with Osborne and
Sanders. Osborne had
23 tackles and a fumble
recovery last year.
Sanders started some
and had 13 tackles and
a fumble recovery for
a touchdown in the
regular season game
with Tug Valley.

The 2015 Mountaineers
QB Howard ready to take over at West Virginia
By John Raby
AP Sports Writer
Skyler Howard sees
his promotion to starting
quarterback at West
Virginia as more than an
opportunity to take over
the offense. He wants to
look like he knows what
he’s doing, and it starts
with staying focused.
Howard follows the
likes of record-setting
quarterbacks Clint
Trickett, Geno Smith
and Pat White over
the past decade in
Morgantown. While the
bar may not be set too
high for West Virginia,
which is predicted to
finish toward the bottom
of the Big 12 standings,
Howard is ready to let
loose after starting two
games at the end of last
season when Trickett got
hurt.
“I think moving to the
next level kind of made
me a little bit antsy,”
Howard said. “I’m
getting under control.
That is one thing I am
focusing on right now. I
want to stay calm in the
pocket and focus on my
reads. It’s getting better
every day.”
Howard threw for
285 yards and three
touchdowns in his
first career start in the
regular-season finale
at Iowa State, then
struggled in a Liberty
Bowl loss to Texas
A&M in which he often
overthrew receivers
but still managed 346
passing yards and three
scores.
The 6-foot junior will
have a veteran offensive
line but must find some
new targets with the
graduation of wide
receivers Kevin White
and Mario Alford.
Howard is the most
mobile quarterback
under fifth-year coach
Dana Holgorsen, who
plans to take advantage
and let Howard run the
ball at times. But he also
wants Howard to avoid
turnovers first.
The Big 12 schedule
won’t be kind to the
Mountaineers, who play
favorites Baylor and
TCU in back-to-back
road games in October.
The Mountaineers also
travel to play Oklahoma
and Kansas State.
More than 50 West
Virginia players have
seen action in a league
game. Holgorsen said
his defense, with 10
returning starters, could
be the best he’s seen in
his 16 years at the Bowl
Subdivision level.
“It’s been a long road
to get to this point
defensively and we
obviously feel good
about it,” Holgorsen
said.
Holgorsen is entering
the fourth year of a sixyear contract, which was
extended after he went
10-3 in his first season
in 2011. But he is 18-20
since and will be under
the watchful eye of new
athletic director Shane
Lyons, a former deputy
AD at Alabama.
The Mountaineers
went 7-6 last season,
losing to Texas A&M
in the Liberty Bowl.
West Virginia opens
the season Sept. 5 at
home against Georgia
Southern.
Some things to watch
from West Virginia in
2015:
DEFENSIVE STRENGTH
West Virginia’s
defense allowed at least
400 yards eight times
a year ago. Seven of
the expected starters
are seniors, led by top
tacklers Nick Kwiatkoski
at linebacker and Karl
Joseph at safety. Dravon
Askew-Henry started all
13 games at safety as a
freshman, was the team’s
sixth-leading tackler and
had two interceptions
against Oklahoma State.
PASS CATCHERS
NEEDED
White and Alford
combined for nearly
2,400 receiving yards
and 21 touchdowns in
2014. Their departures
leave West Virginia with
one wide receiver, Jordan
Thompson, with more
than 25 receptions a year
ago. Returning running
back Wendell Smallwood
had 31.
PUNT RETURN
PROBLEMS
Holgorsen has been
looking for someone who
not only can field punts
but gets some sizable
yardage on returns,
too. West Virginia was
next-to-last in the Bowl
Subdivision with an
average of 3 yards per
punt return. Thompson
had fumble problems and
trouble deciding when to
catch punts. The problem
got so bad that at times
West Virginia lined
up with all 11 players
rushing the punter and
no one back to field the
ball. K.J. Dillon, Vernon
Davis and Thompson
are among those under
consideration for the
return job this season.
TURNOVERS
The Mountaineers
know they need to do
a better job at forcing
turnovers in order to
improve their chances
of winning. A year ago
they forced just 14
turnovers, including two
fumble recoveries, while
coughing the ball up
29 times to opponents,
which was sixth worst
among Bowl Subdivision
teams.
DEPENDABLE KICKER
Third-team AllAmerican Josh Lambert
set an NCAA record with
16 field goals of 40 yards
or more last season.
Overall he went 30 of 39.
Five of those made were
50 yards or longer.

2015 Belfry Pirates
Pirates coming off back to back state titles
By Kyle Lovern
[email protected]
GOODY, Ky. – After
winning a couple of state
championships most
teams would have to
start rebuilding. Belfry is
an exception.
The Pirates don’t
rebuild, they just reload.
Belfry Head Coach
Philip Haywood and
his experienced staff
routinely play several
underclassmen along
with their veteran players
in an effort to get them
quality playing time. Mix
that in with the great
feeder program that
Belfry Middle School
has become and you
have one of the top high
school football programs
in the Bluegrass State.
After winning backto-back Class 3A titles,
the diehard fans of Pond
Creek Nation expect
nothing less than to
be playing for another
championship come late
November.
But Haywood, wearing
his familiar blue sports
coat, said it is like
starting at “ground zero”
when it comes to the
new season.
“We have to start from
the beginning,” said
Haywood. “I’ve told our
kids and remind them of
it frequently, what they
remember is the afterglow of the last week or
two from last year. They
remember how it ended.”
“What they forget is all
the hard work that starts
in August,” Haywood
added. “They need to
remember how practices
are like the first 8-to-10
weeks of the season.
We struggled along last
year and had our ups
and downs early in the
season.”
“We have to get back
to the basics and work on
fundamentals. Success
doesn’t come easy,”
the veteran coach said.
“That’s the bottom line.”
Belfry didn’t have
many seniors last season
but they lost some
key players, including
fullback-linebacker
Austin Hatfield and
quarterback-cornerback
Keaton Taylor. Hatfield
was the MVP of the
last two Class 3A state
championship games and
Taylor scored a key TD
in the title game against
Louisville Central. The
Pirates also lost some
key offensive linemen
from the 2014 squad,
including center Macky
Francis and guard Drew
Mullins.
“We have some key
guys back and some
younger players who
are pushing for playing
time,” Haywood added.
Belfry returns a pair
of all-state defensive
linemen in juniors Cole
Bentley (6-5, 300 lb.)
and Ray Horton (6-2,
280 lbs.) “We expect
them to step up and
provide some leadership
while we try to find some
linebackers,” Haywood
said.
Junior quarterback
Noah Corbett returns.
He started some last
year due to an injury to
Taylor, so he got valuable
experience.
Hard-nosed junior
running back-defensive
back Cameron Catron,
who missed much of
the 2014 season due
to a broken collarbone,
returns on both sides of
the ball. Catron may also
see action at fullback this
season.
Speedy senior Xondre
Willis should get a lot
of carries this year. He
should be one of the
top ground gainers in
Belfry’s powerful running
attack.
Andrew Fletcher, a
junior, will see action at
running back and should
get some carries.
Senior T. J. Dotson,
who is a split end, saw
some action as a halfback
due to the injury bug last
season. He also plays at
defensive end.
Sophomores Taveon
Hunter and Devin Varney
are battling for playing
time as running backs
and could see action
for the defending state
champs.
“We have five or six
guys who we think will
see playing time over
the course of the season
at running back,” said
Haywood. “We’ll be
okay at that position. We
just need to get some
experience there.”
Senior Nate Sanger,
who played some at nose
guard last year, also saw
action as a linebacker.
He was one of the top
tacklers for BHS in 2014.
Haywood said he was
still searching for another
linebacker and waiting
to see what players shine
in practice. “It’s open
for a lot of people and
somebody is going to
emerge,” the Pirate coach
added.

Team Physician: Dr. Chuck Johnson

Chase Dove, a
senior, also returns
with experience on the
defensive side of the
football. Derek Wellman,
who is only a sophomore,
saw some action last
year and should see more
playing time in 2015.
“Our depth situation
on defense is still a
question,” Haywood
added. “Derek is coming
along at linebacker.” He
also saw some action at
fullback and will be in the
running to get on the turf
for that position.
“We are pleased with
the effort of our kids. As
long as you have that,
you have the chance
to improve,” Haywood
stated.
Senior Austin Gibbs
(6-2, 275 lbs.) is a
returning starter on the
offensive line and will
anchor the starters down
in the trenches.
“We are trying to
replace some people
on the line,” Haywood
stressed.
“Junior Austin Dotson
(6-6, 276 lbs.) returns at
tackle. We are expecting
him to improve and come
on for us this year as a
junior,” Haywood added.
Junior Jordan Scott
(6-5, 305 lbs.) saw some
action last year and
should be ready to step
into a starting role this
season.
“We have a bunch of
guys working on some of
those inside (offensive
line) positions,” Haywood
said.
Brayden Preece (Jr.,
5-9, 200 lbs.), Zack
Curry (So., 5-9, 336 lbs.),
Jordan Wolford (Jr., 5-11,
307 lbs.), Justin Ferrell
(Sr., 5-11, 195 lbs.),
Kalob Whitt (Jr., 5-10,
313 lbs.) and others are
battling for a spot on the
line.
Haywood said Bentley,
who has seen action at
tight end, could see some
action as an offensive
guard. He and Horton,
who are both getting
looks from colleges, could
help on the O-line this
year.
“We have three or
four options there that
we are looking at on
the offensive line,” said
Haywood.
Belfry opens the season
hosting Lexington Tates
Creek in the Pike County
Bowl, then travels to
Harlan County and host
Newport Central Catholic
the following week. On
Friday, Sept. 18, the
Pirates host county rival
Pikeville, a game they
lost last season. The next
week they host Knoxville
Catholic, TN, then travel
to Huntington, W.Va. to
take on a new opponent,
Cabell Midland.
The week of Oct 9,
they take on Lawrence
County at CAM Stadium,
then they travel to Martin
County, Ky. to play
Sheldon Clark. The next
to the last regular season
contest will be against
district rival Pike County
Central and they wind up
the regular season hosting
Class 4A Johnson Central.
“We emphasize that
we want to work hard to
get better every day. You
just can’t come out here
and practice. You have
to come out here with
a certain mind set and
a specific skill to work
on that particular day,”
Haywood emphasized.
“If you come out with
the idea that this is what
I’m going to get better
at today – then each
person can work on their
weakness – and it each
player will do that, you
can make tremendous
gains over the course of a
few weeks.”
“We spend a lot of time
explaining to our kids
how to improve and try
to get better each day,”
Haywood concluded.

Wyoming East will open the 2015 season on the road on Aug. 28 at Mingo Central.
Linemen will lead the way for Warriors
By John Conley
[email protected]
Wyoming East faces its share of
challenges this season.
The Warriors will be replacing all of
their starting skill people and special
teams personnel.
New head coach Donald Jewell says
the good news is that a bunch of linemen are back.
“I like our line,” Jewell stated.
“They’re going to be the strength (of
the team).
East, which went 7-4 last year and
made the playoffs for the third straight
season, is looking to the line for leadership.
The first (starting) group is helping
the second group,” Jewell said.
“The backfield is coming along,” he
added. “They have to get their timing
down.”
WEHS will run a double-wing
offense this year.
“We’re going to pound it on the
ground,” Jewell noted.
Starting up front will be junior center Joel Cannady (6-6, 315).
“He transferred from Woodrow last
year,” Jewell said. “He’s got a lot of
talent.”
Right guard Matt Cook played a lot
on the offensive line last year.
Left guard Stephen Shrewsbury
“has all the potential in the world,” the
coach says. “He’s a game time player.”
Right tackle Eric Taylor (6-6, 300)
missed last season.
“He has worked hard,” Jewell said.
“He lifts weights almost every day.”

Senior left tackle Matt Perry is providing leadership, the coach reported.
Jewell says tight end Kyle Clay is a
good blocker.
Junior Austin Tilley is the fullback.
Halfbacks are junior Uriah Adkins,
who got some carries last year, and
senior Alec Lusk, whom Jewell says
“is just an athlete.”
Hunter Hall, who started twice last
year when Aaron Griffith was injured,
will be the quarterback.
Others expected to see action
include Zach Raye, Tyler Hagy, Colby
Sadzewicz and Michael Elkins.
Ethan Hatfield, R.J. Folden (corner) and Jacob Tilley (wide receiver)
will get some snaps as well.
Chance Shrewsbury is the backup
signal caller.
The defense will be in a 4-4 alignment this year.
Shrewsbury will be one of the ends,
and Cannady will be a tacke.
Taylor is the nose guard. Clay
could be an end.
Some spots are still in contention,
according to Jewell.
Raye and Brody Jenkins are possibilities at linebacker.
Likely to play at outside linebacker
are Lusk, Michael Belcher, Michael
Elkins and Uriah Adkins.
Folden and Ethan Hatfield are the
corners.
Dustin Byars could play also.
Tanner Gentry is the long snapper,
and freshman James Snuffer will kick
extra points and field goals.
Snuffer had never played football
before, but he made an impression
on Jewell.
Several guys are competing for
punting duties.
Jewell thinks his team can compete
for a playoff spot if it stays health.
Injuries on the line, he says, could
be a problem. “We’re thin on the
line,” he stated.
“We can’t turn the ball over (and
win),” he noted.
The schedule is largely the same,
but Mount View has replaced Shady
Spring.
East open the season on Aug. 28
against Mingo Central, a team which
reached the state quarterfinals last
year.

The 2015 Westside Renegades open the season at home on Aug. 28 against Liberty.
Westside: Balance, line play keys to season
By John Conley
Westside 2015 Roster
[email protected]
Westside football will take a more
balanced approach this year.
The Renegades put up big numbers last year on offense, reaching
the state semis with a pass-oriented
attack and winning 10 games.
“When we got to Frankfort (in the
semis), we found we didn’t really
have a running game,” said head
coach Larry Cook.
“We’ll still use the five-wide
receiver set (at times),” he commented. “We’re going to be running
more with a flexbone offense, with
the veer and option. It is similar to
Georgia Tech’s offense.”
This time around, a big, experienced O-line and a strong defense
are expected to carry the team.
“We’re real happy with how practice is going,” stated the coach. “The
chemistry is starting to pick up.
“This year, we’ll be more balanced,” he said.
Westside beat Woodrow Wilson
in a summer 7-on-7 match up, a sign
that the team is going in the right
direction.
Senior quarterback Larry “Lil
Larry” Cook will be guiding the
offense.
He started five games as a
sophomore when Justin Cogar was
injured.

Trevor Anderson will be a starting running
back for Westside this season.
Senior quarterback Larry Cook will lead
the Westside offense.
“He’s one of the smartest players
I’ve ever had, and his arm strength
has improved tremendously,” Cook
stated.
Frank Sammons, who started on
defense last year, will be the halfback. “He works hard in the weight
room,” the coach noted.
Fullback Trevor Anderson “is
learning to see the hole and read the
hole.”
Josh Morgan, whom Cook calls
“an extremely tough kid,” will also
get carries.
“He’s one of the hardest workers
on the team,” the coach observed.
He says center Andrew Rollins,
a returning starter, “had a great offseason.”
Left guard Steve Hammonds
“moves exceptionally well for his
size.”
Grayson Hatfield is the left tackle
is a two-year starter and, Cook
saysm,”a smart kid.”
Bryce Nelson is the right guard
and Ben Price is the right tackles.
“Four of the five (on the line) are
returning starters,” Cook remarked.
Wide receivers are Isaiah Lester
(“quick, slithery”) and Jacob Ellis
(“works extremely hard and probably the best receiver on the team.”)
The defense will go 4-3 this year
Ralph Wilson (6-5, 280 junior ) is
the nose guard.
Nelson and Rollins are the defensive tackles. “Both have good size,”
Cook said.
Hammonds is a defensive end.
Linebackers are Hatfield, Price
and Cook (third on the team in tackles last year).
Dalton Dixon is one corner, and
either Sammons or Broc Smith will
be the other.
Cook said “Broc is going to play a
lot for us.”
Safeties are Morgan, Jacob
Daugherty and Jacob Stafford.
Stafford will also be the punter.
“He’s really put a lot of effort into
punting and has attended several
kicking camps,” Cook said.
Morgan and Tyler Goodwin are
the kick returners.
Strength will be Westside’s
strength.
In the off-season, Cook said, “we
had 20-25 kids consistently in the
weight room. They hate to miss
workouts.”
The Renegades also have depth,
and the coach says the team is twodeep at every position. “That’s a big
thing in AA,” he pointed out.
Most of his team is made up of
juniors and sophomores.
“We like where we are now and in
the future,” said Cook.
The Renegades are aiming at
another playoff run.
“We’re looking for 7-3 8-2, maybe
a getting a home game in the playoffs,” stated Cook. “We want to
make another deep run.”
The schedule is much the same as
last year. Mingo Central was moved
to Week 11.
He says he wants to establish the
program as a regular post-season
participant.
Cook praised his coaching staff,
some of whom are volunteers.
“They love kids and the sport,” he
remarked.

Hope in Hornetville: New field, new coach, new team
[email protected]
PHELPS, Ky. - The Phelps
Hornets are looking for a light
at the end of the tunnel. They
have a new head coach, a new
football field being constructed,
and another season to reach for
something better.
The hiring of James “Butch”
Joplin will hopefully breathe
some life into the struggling
program. Phelps has not been
able to play a home game in four
years due to the construction of
the new athletic complex located
where the old elementary school
once stood. This season they
hope to break that tradition and
test out the new turf under a
new set of lights. Construction
is scheduled to be complete by
their first scheduled home game
against Montcalm High School
on September 18.
Last season The Hornets
finished in last place in district 8
and second too last in the region
with a disappointing record of
0-11. This year they are hoping
to move forward and bring some
pride back to the program and
the community.
The problem that has plagued
the Hornets football program
over the last few years has not
been on the football field, it
has been because of the school
geographical location. The
small Class A School is located
in the main extending corner
of Pike County and this location prevents any thoughts of
consolidating with other schools
and becoming more capable of
competing with the larger consolidated schools in the County.
“It is very hard and very difficult to find the kids who can
fill the holes on this team, these
kids have been down for so long
and it’s really hard to get them
to look up, that mind set is hard
to break out of, we are working
on bringing that winning spirit
back to Hornetville,” said Head
coach James Joplin.
The team has been practicing
on donated land while awaiting
the construction of the new field
to be completed. “We are not
going to use any of these things
as an excuse, we are not focusing on any of the problems that
have been around, we are only
looking at this upcoming season,” said coach Joplin.
The team lost 13 seniors to
graduation last year and lost
couple more players to neighboring schools. The new district
alignment adds to the shadow
hanging over the program. “Our
main concern this year is to stay
healthy, if we can remain healthy
throughout the year we have a
shot to make something happen,” added Coach Joplin.
However, returning senior
quarterback Bailey Hurley is
heading into the season with
no fear. “ I think we are going
to do pretty good this year, we
have been working really hard
throughout the summer with
conditioning and we are excited
to have coach Joplin and all of
the expertise he brings to the
team,” said Hurley.
Returning Junior middle linebacker Adam Dotson said, “we
have really been working hard
on becoming a better over-all
team this off season, we have
gotten stronger, faster, and
closer; we are more like a family now. We are really excited
about all the things we will have
this season, everything will be
new and we hope it will give us
a little something extra, we are
best

very excited about having coach
Joplin with us this year, he has

make everyone proud and ask
that everyone come support us
this year.”
Senior running back Dalton
Prater talked about the lessons
the team learned from last
year and what they are doing
to capitalize on that wisdom.
“Last year we dealt with a lot
of injuries that kept us down,
we have been working hard on
our conditioning and getting in
better shape to be able to last
through the season, we don’t
want to repeat what we went
through last year. The Pikeville

Prater.

2015 Pike County Central ready for new season
[email protected]
META, Ky. The Pike
County Central Hawks
and Head Coach Shawn
Thacker are looking to
improve on last year’s
mediocre season. The
Hawks finished in the middle of the pack last season
at number 19 for Class 3A
schools in the state with a
final record of 6-6.
This season the Hawks
are starting over with a
whole new crew, they lost
their senior weapons last
year to graduation; senior
quarterback Mac Justice
and senior running back
Chris Wesley. Now sophomore Seth Conn has been
moved from wide receiver
to the quarterback position. Coach Thacker has
confidence that his young
leader will rise to meet the
challenge.
“I have a lot of confidence in Seth, I believe he
will make a huge impact
to our offense, he is a different style of quarterback
than what Mac was, and
Seth is run first type of
player. Conn is just one
of those natural born
athletes, he can play anywhere we put him,” said
Thacker.
The young quarterback
Conn is not stepping into
the position blind, he has
played the quarterback
position before he began
his high school career.
Conn stated he has a lot
of confidence in himself
and in his team. “I know
we are going to do good
this year, we have a big
part of our line returning
and I know those guys are
going make it happen, we
have to do this together
and I know I can count on
them,” said Conn. This
season the Hawks are
looking to make it further
than last year. “We have
been working on our run
game a lot and we have
really come together more
as a team, our goal here
is to win the region and
move forward towards
playing for a state championship,” added Conn.
Pike Central will rely on
a solid group of returning
lineman to be the foundation of the offense. Coach
Thacker had a smirk on
his face when he mentioned his offensive and
defensive line. “We are
really expecting big things
out of this group of lineman, we feel really good
about what these kids will
be able to do this year,”
said Thacker.
Last season freshman
running back Austin Mullins was given the chance
to get some experience
running the ball. Now with
Chris Wesley out of the
picture the ground attack
will fall mostly on the
shoulders of Mullins. “Austin will be a big impact
player for our offense, we
are focusing a lot on the
run this year and Austin
will be a big part of that.
Austin is a hard worker
and a very talented athlete,” said Thacker.
The Pike County Central Hawks pulled off big
wins last season against
Somerset High School,
Perry County Central, and
Breathitt County. This
year the Hawks dropped
Somerset from the schedule and added Bell County.
The Hawks will not have
to face off with local instate Class 3A powerhouse
Belfry High School until
later in the season on
October 23.
The Hawks Begin their
season on August 23rd
against Letcher County
Central at 7:30 p.m.

The 2015 Pikeville Panthers football team
Pikeville Panthers ready to pounce this season
By William Plaster
[email protected]
PIKEVILLE The Pikeville
Panthers may still be in a state of
shock over how their season ended
last year. The Panthers made it
to the quarter final game of the
commonwealth gridiron bowl where
they faced off against local Class A
rival Paintsville. The panthers had
faced off against the Paintsville Tigers
earlier in the season and won that
game by outscoring the Tigers 62-8.
Paintsville came back to end the
Panthers season by handing them
their first loss in the state playoffs by
beating the Panthers 30-6.
The Pikeville Panthers had played
flawlessly during the regular season
winning every single game. The
Panthers handed Class 3 A state
champions, the Belfry Pirates, one of
their two losses for the season. Now
the Panthers are forced to rebuild
after losing three key players to
graduation last year. The Panthers
lost quarterback Austin Charles,
Receiver Cody Estep, and receiver
Ben Maynard, who produced greatly
last season.
However, head Coach Chris
McNamee will have leading rusher
Daric Pugh returning for his senior
season. Last season, 6 foot 210 pound
Pugh, rushed for a total of 1454 yards
and added 24 touchdowns to the
scoreboard for the Panthers. Pugh
averaged 145 yards per game. This
season Pugh will hope to continue his
success in the ground game and lead
the Panthers further than last year.
Leading the offense this season for
the Panthers will be, 6-foot 180 pound
junior Cody Dials. Last season Dials
gained minimal experience as the
back up to senior quarterback Austin
Charles. This season Dials will get his
chance to prove he is ready to take
charge.
On defense defensive man Blake
Charles will hope to lead the panthers
in tackles for another year. Charles,
a 5 foot 10 inch 195 pound junior,
produced 19 tackles for the Panthers
last season. Lucas Issac a 5 foot 9 inch
195 pound senior contributed 11 total
tackles last season.
The Pikeville Panthers will begin
their official regular season against
The Prestonsburg Balckcats on august
21, at 7:30 p.m. at Prestonsburg’s
home field. The Panthers will have
to square off against the defending
in-state Class 3A state champions,
the Belfry Pirates, mid-way through
the season on September 18, at Cam
Stadium in Belfry at 7:30 p.m.

Courage and commitment are key for Cardinals
By William Plaster
[email protected]
The Sheldon Clark Cardinals are looking to
bounce back from a disappointing season last
year where they only won one game. The addition
of new Head Coach Adam Turner may just be the
ticket.
Last season the Cardinals finished in last place
in both their region and division. They played in
a couple of close games against Lawrence County
and Magoffin County but were unable to pull off
a win; their only win last season was against the
Class 2A Betsy Layne Bobcats.
“I told the boys we will go out there and give
it our best shot every game. We have to put ourselves in a position to win, if we can do that we
will be in good shape. The kids have really bought
into everything we are working for since April 20,
we have really had to change our mind set this
year, when things get bad, we can’t get to low, and
2015 Sheldon Clark
schedule
if things are going good we can’t get to high, we
have to stay even. We have to keep emotions out
of it and focus on football,” said Coach Turner.
“This being my first year here, I want to keep in
the kids minds that we have to do the best we can
all the time,” added Turner.
Coach Turner is looking forward to seeing
what he can do with the weapons he has to use
this year. “Offensively we are really excited about
Brandon Butcher, he was our leading rusher
last year and we expect great things out of him
this year. Our offensive line all have experience
and have been working hard in the weight room
during the off-season. Defensively our defensive
stand-outs are going to be Braden Mills and Cody
Cooper, they are our number one and two leading
tacklers from last year, we are really going to rely
on them this season to keep that up,” said Turner.
This season the Cardinals will return their leading rusher from last year, senior running back
Brandon Butcher. Butcher rushed for 1,110 yards
last season and added 12 touchdowns to the
scoreboard for the Cardinals.
“I’m going to try my best to do as good or better than I did last year, I have put in a lot of work
between last season and now and I am really looking forward to this season and seeing how we can
do,” said Butcher. “We are hoping to get this team
turned around on a positive note and get everyone excited again about Sheldon Clark football
again,” added Butcher.
The Cardinal will have to face tough opponents
during the middle stretch of the season. Pikeville
High School and defending Class 3A state champion, the Belfry Pirates will be big milestones for
the cardinals this season to gauge just how much
they have improved. The Cardinals will begin
their season on August 21, against Paintsville on
their home turf at 7:30 p.m.

2015 Tug Valley Panthers
Great expectations, high hopes for Tug Valley
[email protected]
There are great expectations and
high hopes for the Tug Valley High
School football team from the players and the fans.
The Panthers are coming off a
record season for the school where
they not only won their first-ever
playoff game, but made it to the
Class A semi-finals in 2014.
One thing TVHS has this season
is experience and numbers. The
coaching staff knows that having
familiarity of the schemes and program is very valuable for a team.
“We do have several kids back that
have played a lot of football,” Head
Coach Tony Clusky said. “We got
three extra games in the playoffs.
That is almost half a season of extra
playing time for some of these kids.”
Tug Valley has several seniors that
are returning and they have started
several games during their careers
for the Panthers.
Senior offensive and defensive
lineman Dusty Mills (6-6, 315 lbs.)
will anchor the line. Mills, a fouryear starter, was a first-team all-state
selection last season.
Senior Phillip Lucas (6-3, 240
lbs.), a fullback-defensive end, is a
4-year starter who is back for the
silver and black.
Tyler Conley, a senior quarterback-safety, is a four-year starter on
defense and a three-year starter as
the Panther’s signal caller.
Sophomore Jeremy Dillon (6-4,
182 lbs.) is a split end-defensive
end, who can also play quarterback
and be used as a running back in
certain situations. Dillon was a Class
A first team all-state selection as a
freshman and led the team in several
offensive and defensive categories
last season.
Dillon’s athleticism was utilized
in many ways last season and that
won’t change this year.
Senior Corbin Oliver, a feisty halfback-wide out- free safety, is back for
Clusky and his staff. His speed and
skills can really help the team.
Senior Dylan Dotson, yet another
senior running back-defensive end
will get plenty of action on both
sides of the football.
Senior Chandler Runyon came
out for the team this season. He is a
Mills
good athlete and can help the team
at split end and in the secondary.
Senior Clay Warf, a starter at linebacker, is back for his final season
and will be a key on the defensive
side of the football again this season.
Senior Calvin Blankenship is back
as a starting wide receiver and gives
Tug Valley a solid starter at that
position. His brother Jonathan Blankenship, a sophomore, is also out for
the team this season and is another
skill player that can be utilized.
Twins Justin and Jared Farley are
on the roster and will see playing
time.
Ike Starr, another senior, is a nose
guard-tight end that Clusky is high
on. “He has that motor that coaches
like,” Clusky said of Starr.
Another lineman for the Panther
staff includes senior John Hall (6-2,
265 lbs.) who played every down
last season, according to Clusky.
Other linemen that will line up
down in the trenches include junior
Chandler Carey (5-7, 195 lbs.),
Carson May (5-11, 215 lbs.), Dakota
Bryant (6-4, 288 lbs.), Josh DeBoard
(5-10, 240 lbs.) and Todd Blevins
(6-3, 315 lbs.)
“We have 16 linemen on this team
out of the 42 that will dress,” Clusky
added. So he has some depth this
season on the line, which can help
keep players fresh as the long grind
of the season progresses toward
November.
This is the most Tug Valley has
dressed in football in several years.
The success of the past season has
the interest higher than in past years
for the Single A school.
Expect Clusky and his staff to
do about the same on offense and
defense this season, with a “few
wrinkles thrown in” this season.
“We will try to utilize some of our
skill players to the best of their ability,” the veteran coach added. “We
will put in a few plays for some of
the kids that have the talent.”
With the success Tug Valley had
last season, they may not be able to
sneak up on teams this year. Clusky
noted that the team won a couple
of overtime contests last year. In
the past, Panther teams may have
gotten behind early, but would not
battle back.
“I’ll be the first to admit that last
year we had some luck,” Clusky
Oliver
said. “But I feel like good teams find
ways to win close ballgames. Last
year I thought we did that and that
will only make us better this year.”
“We’ve been through the overtimes and close games,” Clusky said.
“Last year if we fell behind 14-0, we
came back to win. That is not going
to faze these kids. They will bounce
back and fight to win. That is why
you play until the final whistle.”
“It tickles me to death to see
that,” Clusky said. “It wasn’t that
way in the past. I wasn’t coaching
then, but it is good to see this.”
Tug Valley will be playing on
a new surface, as the field was
crowned and new grass sod planted
this summer. The field will be ready
for the first home game of the
season, however, the new dressing
rooms, concession stands and press
box may not be finished until later.
Although there were hopes that
these projects would advance like
the work on the football field did.
The Panther faithful hope the
field will be playoff approved this
fall. TVHS had to “host” their home
playoff games at Harless Stadium at
Mingo Central last year.
The first two games of the season
will be at home as Tug Valley hosts
Sherman and then Meadow Bridge.
Meadow Bridge was the only regular season loss the Panther’s suffered
last season. Then they made their
great run in the playoffs losing to
Williamstown in the semi-finals.
The first road game will be at Van
in week three, then another road
trip to Inez, Ky. to play Sheldon
Clark and a visit to old rival Tolsia.
Then it is back home for three
straight hosting Class A power
Buffalo, Valley of Fayette and Calhoun County. Next is a long trip to
Montcalm and the regular season
will wind up at home with a game
against past playoff opponent Man.
The final week will be the Open date
for TVHS.
Tug Valley hopes to make another
good run in the Class A playoffs this
season.
Many fans won’t be surprised if
that happens. Now it is expected.

2015 Mingo Central Miners
Miners look to dig deep into playoffs this year
By William Plaster
[email protected]
The Mingo Central
Miners are entering the
2015 season with a lot of
momentum. The Miners
won their first ever
playoff game last season
against the Sissonville
Indians on their home
turf at “Buck” Harless
Stadium.
Mingo Central
finished the season
with a record of 10-2,
losing twice to Wayne
County High School,
once during the regular
season and finally in the
class AA quarter final
playoff game.
Mingo Central will
enter their fourth
year in the Class AA
Cardinal Conference.
Mingo Central High
School was formed five
years ago from four
area Class A schools
and this will be the first
year that head coach
Yogi Kinder can forget
about working out the
kinks of consolidation,
this group of players
has been together since
their freshman year.
Mingo Central lost
some talented starters
to graduation, but had
no problem filling those
roster gaps with eager,
fresh, and ready to prove
something players.
“We had a good
year last year and we
expected that, last
season will always
mean something to us
because it was the first
ever playoff win for
this school, but right
now we are focusing on
what’s next for us,” said
head coach Yogi Kinder.
Mingo Central will be
returning 11 senior
players this season,
including All-State
quarterback Steven
Hammond. Several of
the returning starters
were Williamson Daily
News All-Area players.
Mingo Central will
have tough games this
season against normal
Cardinal Conference
teams such as Tolsia,
Sissonville, Wayne and
local rival Chapmanville.
The Wayne Pioneers
was a mountain that
the Miners just couldn’t
climb last season and
will likely be their
toughest opponent this
season as well. “Wayne
is always tough, they
have always been tough,
and they have a lot of
tradition over in Wayne.
Those Kids work very
hard over there and
that’s the level that we
are trying to get to,”
said Kinder.
“We are really
catching up to that,
every year the scores
are getting closer and
closer and we will give
it everything we got this
year,” added Kinder.
Expectations are
high for the Miners this
year, with all the talent
returning and the effort
that the players have put
in during the off season,
this team is looking to
go all the way. “We are
looking at 10-0, which
will give us a home
field playoff game.
It’s going to be tough
because everyone in this
conference is coming to
play ball, and you can
lose every single game
that you play, there will
be nothing easy this year
and we are really going
to have to bring it as a
team this season,” said
Kinder. “Our biggest
obstacles this year will
be turnovers, penalties
and injuries. Those are
the biggest things in
football. You can have a
great team but if you are
still dealing with those
problems it can really
ruin a season,” added
Kinder.
The mass amount
of returning talent is
a big weapon for the
miners this season.
Experience, talent, and
a hunger to win is a
combination that will be
the foundation of how
the season goes. “Our
quarterback is back,
our running backs are
back, we lost some and
gained it right back,
and we moved big
Nathaniel Abbot from
tight-end to guard,” said
Kinder. “He is a really
big player that will help
us out a lot, our kids
are getting bigger and
bigger every year and
that is something we
have been missing for a
while. Skill-wise we can
play with anyone we go
up against, but now that
we are getting some size
on us - and we will be
able compete with these

are out there.”
The depth will be
better for MCHS in
2015. “We will have a
very experienced team
this year, we have 30
players that have been
playing for a couple of
years now. That will be
a big weapon for us this
year, should injuries
come up we will be
ready,” added Kinder.
Senior quarterback
Steven Hammond
returns this year as
the veteran leader.
His impressive play
last season earned
him a spot on the first
team All-State list by
WVHSAA. Hammond
led the Miners in total
offense last season with
111 rushing attempts
for 926 yards and he
completed 96 passing
attempts for 863 yards
and he scored 18 total
touchdowns. “We have a
lot of starters back and
we are expecting some
big things out of this
group. Hopefully we
can make it past where
we did last year and

really leave our mark on

said Hammond. The
speedy quarterback
has been training all
offseason to prepare for
the season ahead. He
will lead the team this
year and hopes all of
the preparation will be
enough.
“Coach has really
been conditioning us
hard this year. Our
offense is really fast
tempo and you have to
be in great shape to be
able to play like that.
I am really looking
forward to this season,”
added Hammond.
Ethan Collins will
be returning for his
senior year as fullback
and middle linebacker.
Collins contributed 58
tackles for the Miners
last season as a junior.
“We are ready for this
season, we have spent
a lot of time in the
weight room during the
offseason and we are
ready to get it done this
year. We want to go all
the way and win state
this year,” said Collins.

Junior Joe Hunt,
a bruising fullback,
rushed for 720 yards
and 11 TDs last season
as a sophomore. He is
expected to do the same
this season.
Senior Stephen Whitt
is the leading wide
receiver returning this
season. He is also a
safety on defense.
Senior Nathaniel
Abbott will move from
blocking tight end
to offensive guard.
Abbott’s 6-foot-1 inch,
200 pound frame will be
a welcomed addition to
the Miners protection
unit. “We were a really
good team last year
and we expect to be
even better this year,
we are shooting for
a championship this
year,” said Abbott.
Last season the
Mingo Central Miners
offense averaged 49.2
points per game; they
held a 50 percent third
down conversion rate
and had over 4,100
total rushing yards
throughout the whole
2014 season. Running
backs Chance Lester
and Chase Justice will
be hard players to
replace in an offense
that gained so much
on the ground. Both
players combined for
nearly 2,000 yards of
total offense.
To fill the void left
by the departure of
Lester and Justice, the
Miners will have to
rely on senior Deonte
Joplin. Deonte has paid
his dues and waited
patiently for his chance
to prove himself.
Last season Joplin
contributed greatly
with 633 yards of total
offense, 439 rushing
yards on 59 carries
and 145 yards on 12
receptions.
The Mingo Central
Miners will make their
regular season debut
against Wyoming East
at home on August 8, at
7:30 p.m. The Miners
will face off against
tough rival Wayne
County High School
halfway through the
season on October 2,
7:30 p.m. at home.

Man, MC and Tug ranked in preseason poll
By Paul Adkins
[email protected]
The Man High School football team expects to have a big year.
The state’s media agrees.
The Hillbillies are ranked No. 9 in the state in the Charleston Gazette-Mail’s
2015 Class A High School Football Preseason Poll.
Man was 6-5 last year and fell 16-12 in the first round of the Class A playoffs
to Tug Valley at Mingo Central’s Buck Harlesss Stadium.
Tug Valley, 11-2 last year and a Class A state semifinalist, is ranked No. 3 in
the preseason poll.
Man opens the season Aug. 28 at Class AAA Logan. Tug Valley hits the road
at Pocahontas County.
Logan and Chapmanville were both unranked in the Class AAA and AA

Chapmanville, 4-6 last year, did receive two votes and are a preseason No.
13 in the state.
Capital (13-0), last year’s 3A state champs, are ranked No. 1.
Bridgeport (13-1), last year’s Double-A state champs, sit atop its respective
division.
The Cardinal Conference is represented by three teams in the top 10
in Class AA. Mingo Central (10-2) is second, Wayne (10-3) fifth and
Sissonville (7-4) ninth. Sissonville opens the season Aug. 28 in a conference
clash at Chapmanville. Herbert Hoover, another league team, received one
