All Children Need Someone
Who Believes in Them
For more than 47 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Joseph County has operated under the
belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. Research confirms
when we invest time and resources into the health and well-being of children the return is
significant. Educational attainment, socio-emotional competencies and avoidance of risky
behaviors are the results.
Big Brothers Big Sisters’ one-to-one mentoring model is a cost-effective way to help children
avoid harmful behaviors and encourage the positive potential all children have when supported
by a caring community.
2014 was an exciting and landmark year for Big Brothers Big Sisters of St. Joseph County. As
the lead partner in the City of South Bend’s Youth mentoring initiative, we were able to raise
awareness, grow our funding base and recruit more mentors for the children on our wait list.
We are very grateful to the Mayor and his administration and Big Brother Gavin Ferlic for their
understanding of the importance of one-to-one mentoring and willingness to advocate for our
community’s most vulnerable children.
We affectionately call our mentors “Bigs”, and our mentees “Littles.” They are very special people
that we are privileged and thankful to know.
Our deep appreciation to the many generous people who have dedicated time, funding and
other resources to help assure that St. Joseph County’s children have a better, brighter future.

Youth in Our Program:
Succeed in school | Have better relationships | Avoid risky behaviors
Kids without positive guidance from a mentor are more likely to engage in selfdestructive behavior. Our Littles have a more positive attitude towards the future
and avoid behaviors that are counter-productive to positive growth. When our
Littles bond with their Big Brother or Sister, the impact is life changing.
