Loving Shepherd, Milwaukee joins the Federation
Pastor Thomas Fischer and
Pastor David Seager of Loving
Shepherd, Milwaukee formally
requested to become the
twenty-eighth member of the KML
Federation. The KML General
Board accepted the request and
welcomed them into our midst.
Located at 3909 W. Clinton Avenue
the church of 604 communicants
also supports a Lutheran elementary
school with 71 students in grades
K5-8 and another 19 in K3 and K4.
Loving Shepherd has a strong
connection with Christian education.
They currently send many of their
youth to Wisconsin Lutheran High
School. KML has two students from
Loving Shepherd: Caitlyn Koeller and Jessi Reidy. The leaders of Loving Shepherd intend to maintain dual membership
in the Wisco and KML Federations.

The 2008-09 students in Computer Graphics all entered
a logo design contest held by WELS Lutheran for Life,
Metro-Milwaukee, for their Life-A-Thon event. Other
schools were also invited to enter. The winning design
was submitted by Jessica Kowalski (KML 2010).

Thrivent matching funds program to end
December 31
We have been told that this is your last chance to have your donations matched! The Thrivent Financial Giving
Plus Program will be discontinued December 31. Funds are limited for this program and the matching will only be
honored while funds last.
Currently Thrivent will add $1 for every $2 contribution up to $600 if you are at least 16 years old and a Thrivent
benefit member or own Thrivent Mutual Funds or Thrivent Financial Insurance Company products. Over the past six
years, KML has received $230,000 through this program. If you would like to take advantage of this program,
please submit your donation and paperwork to KML as soon as possible.
You can obtain a Giving Plus form from our web site www.kmlhs.org. Simply click on Matching Gifts and then
scroll down to Matching Gifts to print your form, or you can contact the KML office to have one sent to you. If you
have any questions about the Giving Plus matching program, please contact Wendy Breimon, Mission Advancement

Did you know?
KML takes first place for all groups in
WSMA large group competition! For the first time
in KML history, both choirs, Women’s Choir and
Concert Choir, competing in the WSMA (Wisconsin
School Music Association) Large Group competition
earned a first place rating in the Class A category. The
Wind Ensemble also received first place in Class A. In
addition, the Symphonic Band was awarded first place
in Class B. The competition was held at Mayville High
School in April. We thank God for the tremendous
talents he has blessed our students with and the gifted
instructors who work diligently to guide and train them.
Astounding WSMA solo / ensemble results!
KML was proud to have ninety-seven students compete
in the WSMA District Solo / Ensemble competition held
at Laconia High School in March. Of the ninety-seven,
sixty two students advanced to compete at the state
level. Fifty-seven of those students were awarded at
least one gold medal, and four students were awarded
Exemplary rating. KML has certainly been blessed with
an abundance of musical talent, and we thank our
parents for the continued support they give to our Fine
Arts Department.
ACT Scores:
Once again, KML’s ACT scores exceeded state
and national averages. We thank God for the gifts and
talents he has bestowed on our students! Following is

Advanced Placement (AP) Test
Results for 2008-09
A total of 23 students wrote a total of 38 Advanced
Placement tests during the month of May. Advanced Placement tests are scored on a scale of 1-5, and if a student
earns a score of 3, 4, or 5 college credits will usually be
given. Our students enjoyed considerable success with these
exams. The chart shows the scores earned in each of the
exams.
This year we have 29 alumni who are
sending their children to KMLHS. What a bless
ing to see the second generation on campus. God has
certainly blessed the ministry of our high school.

Auf Nach Deutschland!
Twenty-one KML students and parents spent part of their summer
vacation overseas this past July. Led by Mr. Schmandt, they visited the four
German speaking countries of Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and of
course Germany. During the 12 day tour, they were awed by the natural
beauty of the landscape in the Alps and the Black Forest. Other highlights
of the tour were visits to King Ludwig’s castle Neuschwanstein, Hitler’s
Eagle’s Nest perched high in the Alps and Lutherstadt Wittenberg—the site
of the famous nailing of the ninety five theses.
From big city Berlin to the quaint villages of Rothenburg and
Rüdesheim, the tour gave all a wonderful overview of the culture and
people of German speaking Europe.
Our next tour is tentatively planned for July of 2011. Consider joining us.

Why does tuition go up?
Is Kettle Moraine Lutheran doing what it can to keep
tuition affordable to all? Should we run a bare bones
ministry at a lower cost, or offer an extensive curriculum
with co- curricular programs that will increase our costs?
Should we pack our classes with 35 students with one
teacher or strive for favorable ratios and personalization? These questions swirl around the single core of
our ministry that will never change, God’s Word. This
article is written to establish some facts about our
beloved KML to help us all understand the blessings of
a mighty God who has been with us for the last thirtyfive years.
Our graduates move on after KML…

Balancing Cost vs. Value
There are few schools left who are willing to teach
God’s Word as absolute truth. We want every family
in every community to know that KML is one of those
schools. We want them to know about the value of a
distinctly Lutheran Christian education. Some people
would pay anything for that value. Others would pay
nothing. Some sacrifice everything to obtain Christian
education for their children. Others give it little thought.
No matter what, and without hesitation, KML boldly
stands on the basic principle of using Scripture to “educate, encourage, and equip God’s people for life and for
eternity.”
People pay for what they value most. Jesus taught,
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matt 6:21
Value … “for life and for eternity”
KML will prepare its graduates to become productive
leaders in whatever vocation God has planned for them.
It is our objective to prepare the next generation of
God-fearing, Bible
believing doctors, lawyers, laborers, business
owners, pastors, and
teachers. The quality of
education available can
be measured in many
ways. Two simple ways
to evaluate our effectiveness is through graduation
results and standardized
ACT test comparisons.

There is something that surpasses higher test scores
and greater success after KML. Each of our students is
given four more years of formal education that helps
them discern through the eyes of God-given faith what
the world is teaching. That value is worth the cost.
What price tag can be put on a growing relationship
with the true Savior, Jesus Christ? Every day our students open the Bible and study God’s plan of salvation
and the calling they are given. They hear the messages
of Law and Gospel. They are mentored by Christian
teachers who model Christ’s sacrifice and love. Our
KML family worships and prays together each day. Our
eternal life in heaven is a gift.
Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the
eternal life to which you were called when you made
your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
1 Timothy 6:12
6
How does the VALUE of a KML
education compare?
The October 19, 2007 edition of The Business Journal of Milwaukee compared the 25 largest Milwaukee
area private schools.
• KML was the ninth largest school on the list.
• KML had the fourth lowest tuition
• Seventeen schools reported total operating budgets
and KML had the 14th smallest.
By comparison these numbers show that KML has
done much to stay affordable. When contrasted with the
Wisconsin public school system which is free to the user
and paid for by tax dollars, KML is far more efficient in
the cost of educating each student.
In 2009-10 KML will need to spend $8,260 to
educate one child. Tuition covers only 69% of the total
cost. Public education and most other private schools
will spend far more dollars on each high school student
in Wisconsin. That cost is shared by many more people.
Who supports KML?
From the pie chart you can see that the families who
choose to send their children to KML pay 69% of the
actual costs. The twenty-eight churches of the federation
make up 16% of the total support needed. The more the
churches are able to support KML the lower the tuition
will be. Inversely, the less the churches are able to support the annual budget, the greater responsibility falls to
the family.
KML is blessed with many donors each year who
send support gifts to KML. These alumni, grandparents,
business owners, and stewards of God’s money see the
value of providing excellent Lutheran Christian education.
What is KML doing to try to keep
tuition lower?
Just as in your personal budget, there are expenses
that KML has very little control over. Health insurance,
instruction costs, and personnel are just a few of the larger
items. We daily monitor the income and expenses of
our ministry operating plan. Every penny that is spent is
evaluated and counted. Monthly reports are given to both
the Finance Committee and the Board of Directors. These
men represent our federation churches. They all wish to
make the education of KML available to the most people
possible. They also agree that excellence in our programs
is an essential goal to strive for.
1. Our school leadership regularly asks our federated
churches to consider increasing their support which
would reduce tuition.
2. Our school regularly seeks new financial gifts
through appeal letters, phone calls, events. These
donations are absolutely necessary to help more
families stay at KML by keeping tuition low.
3. KML has developed a unique waste water treatment
facility that saves us money every year.
4. KML has completed a solar project that is currently
producing approximately 9% of our total energy
usage.
5. KML has already begun phase II of its solar
program. It is our hope that we will provide at least
25% of our energy usage.
6. KML employs staff that daily monitors and
manages all income and expenses.
What can YOU do to make it affordable
for your children?
It is not too soon to consider how to educate your
children years from now. The cost of Christian high school
education sometimes shocks families to the point of taking
what appears to be the easy way out.

Why does tuition go up?
continued from page 7
The first step would be to honestly prioritize what
you value most. Once you make that decision, you can
focus on how to achieve it.
The future is sooner than you think. Begin preparing now for the time when high school tuition payments
become a reality.
Here are some suggested methods that our current
and future KML families are using:
1. Start early with an education savings account
(check into a tax savings Coverdell Account)
2. Check the education calculator at https://www.
thrivent.com/calculators. This will help you
calculate your future education savings.
3. Home equity can be used to pay tuition expenses
4. Selling property
5. Reducing other expenses to be able to pay for
Christian education.
All our families sacrifice something to afford tuition
at KML. Most would agree that whatever the sacrifice
is today, it will be well worth it tomorrow. It can be said
that Christian education and training with God’s Word
is the best investment a person can ever make. IT PAYS
ETERNAL DIVIDENDS.
“Train a child in the way he should go, and when he
is old he will not turn from it.” Proverbs 22:6

Celebration of Ministry
Special thanks to Trinity Lutheran on Pleasant Valley in
West Bend for hosting our Celebration of Ministry service in
early September. Pastor Mellon reminded us all about the
call to serve our Savior, Jesus Christ. The members of the
federation packed the pews to ask God for his blessing on our
thirty-sixth school year. Mr. Haferman was acknowledged
for his twenty-eighth year of teaching at KML and forty total
years of service in the public ministry.
Teacher Erin Laabs was also installed in the celebration service. Mrs. Laabs holds a one year
part-time call to serve in our English department.
May God bless our year and give us the zeal to tell of the great deeds he has done for us and
the next generation!
Pastors’ Visitation Day
One of our most important events at the start of
a school year is to gather together the pastors of the
KML Federation. They worship with the KML students and staff in the morning chapel service. Each
pastor spends time with the youth of his church
giving updates on service opportunities and providing mentoring and encouragement. The pastors
listen to reports from KML administrators that tell
the story of what lies ahead for their high school in
the 2009-’10 school year and beyond.

numbers of participants were
fewer than normal God blessed
the event with a gross income of more than $25,000!
Thanks to all who played and donated. May God bless
all the business who sponsored the event. See you
