At the beginning of the 20th Century Egon Schiele is one of the most provocative artists in Vienna. His
life and work are driven by beautiful women and an era that is coming to an end. Two women will have a
lasting impact on him – his sister and first muse Gerti, and 17-year-old Wally, arguably Schiele’s one true
love, immortalised in his famous painting ‘Death and the Maiden’. Schiele’s radical paintings scandalise
Viennese society while daring artists like Gustav Klimt and art agents alike are sensing the exceptional.
But Egon Schiele is also prepared to go beyond his own pain and to sacrifice Love and Life for his Art.

Dieter Berner was born in Vienna in 1944. Following his studies at Max Reinhardt Seminar, he
worked as a stage and film actor and director in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. He played the
lead in Michael Haneke’s THE SEVENTH CONTINENT (1989) and co-wrote and directed various
award-winning TV series. His first feature film JOINT VENTURE (1994) premiered at Karlovy Vary.
Since 2007, Dieter Berner has directed several film projects in cooperation with his students at the
film academies in Babelsberg and Vienna.

Corporate lawyer, Urs Blank, is the undisputed star of his profession. He has money and the perfect
wife. But the suicide of a business colleague throws him off track and leads to an attraction with
Lucille and her alternative lifestyle. Seduced into experimenting with hallucinogenic mushrooms, his

The quirky, overambitious pianist Andi (33) and the happy go lucky, laid back Benno (36) have just

Mammal
Margaret, a divorced woman living alone in Dublin, learns that her teenage son has been found dead.
Enduring her unsettling grief privately, she escapes daily to the local swimming pool. One day at the
pool she runs into Joe, a homeless youth she found injured late one night in the deserted laneway
behind her work.
Margaret offers Joe a room in her house and an unorthodox relationship starts to develop between
them. Margaret’s ex-husband Matt begins to turn up randomly in Margaret’s life. As Margaret and

Lena lives with her single mother who is too occupied with herself to be a support for her intelligent
and special daughter. Dreaming her way out of the suburb, Lena spends her time assembling expressive collages and chatting with a guy she met online. Only her classmate Tim, a gifted graffiti-artist and
loner himself, notices her artistic talent, and the two get closer – much to the displeasure of Lena’s
childhood friend Nicole who is now best friends with cool but manipulative Stella.
When Lena sees Nicole and Tim kissing, she breaks off contact with her former friends, not knowing
that Stella set up the kiss. In her despair, Lena throws herself head-on into the social network and
confides in the chat buddy she has never met in person – but behind the stranger’s profile are Nicole

Rio de Janeiro, 1983. Fun-loving Peralta has a daytime job at an insurance company, but he prefers to

Peter and Lisbeth are two young but unfortunate lovers living in a rigid rural community in the Black
­Forest. She comes from a wealthy family of glassblowers; he is a poor coal worker on the lower end
of society. To become rich and respected, Peter makes a pact with a devil named Dutch Michael, who
rips out his heart and replaces it with a stone. Robbed of all warmth and feeling, Peter becomes a

Heart of Stone is based on a dark fairy tale written by Wilhelm Hauff and first published in 1827. It tells

as a criticism of man’s greed for power; it also condemns the exploitation of nature and the abuse of
fellow human beings. Johannes Naber translates this timeless parable into an emotional story tailored
to today’s audiences. HEART OF STONE is the second collaboration between SCHMIDTz KATZE
FILMKOLLEKTIV and STUDIO BABELSBERG after their 2012 film IN DARKNESS, which received an
Academy Award nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
