JUNE 26, 2014
RENO, Nev. - Team Turbo
Grips of Fort Wayne, Ind.,
rallied back from a disappointing opening game at the 2014
United States Bowling Congress
Open Championships by rolling
the first 1,300 team game in
the 111-year history of the
event.
Led by Terry Rohrer's 298,
Team Turbo Grips fired 1,318 at
the National Bowling Stadium
to surpass the 1,299 posted by
123Bowl.com of Naugatuck,
Conn., on May 2.
Rohrer, who rolled a
300 at the 2009 USBC Open
Championships, was joined
in the record-effort by George
Palumbo (268), Kent Wagner
(266), 2010 Team All-Events
champion JR Raymond (258)
and defending Regular Singles
champion Zeke Bayt (228).
Team Turbo Grips also
moved into sixth place in Regular Team on Friday, adding
games of 1,009 and 1,184 for a
3,511 series. Motion Plus Lanes
of Cudahy, Wis., leads with
3,561.
Raymond led the way for
Team Turbo Grips with a
743 set and was followed by
Palumbo (716), Rohrer (706),
Bayt (674) and Wagner (672).
"We didn't have a very
good first game," said Bayt,
who made his third Open
Championships appearance.
"A couple of us struggled with
ball reaction, and then we
found it. These guys bowled
phenomenal. They said they
didn't know what was going
on, but I remembered someone
shot 1,299, and that no one had
ever shot 1,300. I looked up in
the eighth frame and saw we
still had a shot at 1,300."
The team gave Rohrer the
chance to secure the record
with a strike on his first ball in
the 10th frame, and he delivered. Although he fell short
of becoming the 29th bowler
in tournament history to have
multiple perfect games on the
championship lanes, Rohrer
was surprised by the record
and elated by his team's effort.
"I didn't realize what our
team was shooting and didn't
put the numbers together," said
Rohrer, who made his 14th
tournament appearance. "After
I finished, they said we had
set the record. We talked, had
a plan in place and all worked
together, and that was part of
the magic today."
The group will return to the
lanes for doubles and singles
Saturday at 2 p.m. EDT, and
their performance will be
featured live on BowlTV as
Bayt puts his singles title on
the line.

Random Thoughts
Tony Franklin, Publisher
I’m not a huge soccer fan,
but over the years the World
Cup has become more intriguing to me. I’m just like the rest
of you, I don’t get a huge thrill
out of a sport that revels in
games that end 1-0. But with
that being said I do understand
the greatness and magic that’s
involved in a soccer/futbol
match.
I watched the USA/Ghana
match at The Londoner in
Frisco, and that place was more
packed than any sports bar I
have ever seen for any sporting
event. And let me tell you,
when the US scored the winner
with seven minutes left, the
bar went absolutely bonkers,
and it was pretty awesome.
So, you know, lets go USA!
In the following days I
learned a little more about our
“American” team. There are
five German-Americans on the
team and not to mention the
coach is a German national.
My personal expectations for
a group of athletes representing
a nation is that at the very least
they live or have lived in the
country they represent, and I
do expect them to be citizens
of that country.
The five German-Americans
were all born in Germany
to American fathers in the
military and German mothers. So they are American
citizens. These five excellent
soccer players all grew up In
Germany and all but one to my
knowledge continues to live
in Germany full-time. Yet they
are somehow on the American
national Soccer team.
Yes they have dual citizenship due to their American
father and German mother.
But are they loyal to American
values? Do they have a sense
of national pride for America?
Most importantly are they
emotionally invested in winning for America?
The eligibility rules for
FIFA are pretty simple yet
cloudy, “players must be able
to demonstrate a “clear connection” to a country that they had
not been born in but wished to
represent. This ruling explicitly
states that, in such scenarios,
the player must have at least
one parent or grandparent
who was born in that country,
or the player must have been
resident in that country for at
least two years.”
What if you had the Team
USA Bowling team, and there
were four stars that have been
living their whole lives in other
countries, yet came over to
Arlington and bowled the trials. They were allowed to bowl
the qualifier because they had
a parent who was an American
citizen.

Let’s say on this given
weekend they just happened to
beat Stefanie Johnson, Tennelle
Milligan, Shannon O’Keefe, and
CDB. My new Team USA is four
people I’ve never heard of…
I think it’s a little hard for
me to be emotionally invested
in those ladies, because I just
don’t believe they are invested
and committed to the red,
white and blue. I’m very sure
that they will be committed
to their fellow teammates, just
like our USA soccer team, but
is their goal to win for country
they represent?
There are few times in a
sports decade where national
pride comes into play. The
Olympics, the World Cup, the
Ryder Cup…those moments get
me jazzed to really bring my
USA sports attitude. I know
that THOSE teams are all in
it for the red, white, and blue,
this USA World Cup team has
me wondering though.

This week at the USBC
Open…
Bowling Proprietor extraordinaire Jamie Brooks made his
55th appearance last Wednesday. His first year was in 1957
in Fort Worth. He’s currently
knocked down 90,804 pins for
a 188 average in his 54 years.
This year he shot 1508 in
all-events total, leaving him
just 7,688 pins short of the
ultimate accomplishment,
100,000 pins.
As for our trip to Reno,
I will keep it short and this
week and more detail next.
I shot 648 in Team, 654 in
doubles and 608 in singles.
Genie and I shot 1250-something in doubles and the team
shot 2990-something. As usual
G was high in team with 660;
she’s really good on that team
pattern, and especially at the
Stadium.
The real highlight of the
weekend was for the girls.
Lusha’s Ladies took over the
team lead at the Women’s
Championship with a score of
2651, beating the previous high
by 30 pins. G, Tina Williams,
Sandi Charles and Lisa Wasson
were some excited young ladies

Petraglia Honored with 53rd Sam Levine
Flowers for the Living Award
The 2014 Sam Levine
Flowers for the Living Award,
sponsored by The Bowling
Foundation, goes to Brunswick
Professional Staff Member and
Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia, Manalapan, New Jersey.
Petraglia, 67, is well known as
the only Professional Bowlers
Association champion in six
decades, winning 14 PBA Tour
titles, 8 PBA50 Tour titles, and
numerous other titles on the
lanes, including 4 Newsday
Eastern Open crowns in the
early years of his career, defeating many of the best bowlers
in the world in that grueling 85
game event. He is also a PBA
Triple Crown winner.
Petraglia provided one of
the most exciting moments in
bowling history when he rolled
a 300 game on national television in 1994 to earn a $100,000
bonus. After the final strikes,
he said “Thank God, now my
son can go to college.” (and
John Jr. did attend and bowl
at Moorhead State University).
The Flowers Award, however,
is not being given to Petraglia
for his bowling prowess or
superior performance. He
was chosen for his outstanding character, integrity, and
outspokenness about important
issues throughout his career
representing the best of bowling on and off the lanes.

Not fond of airlines, Petraglia has logged millions of
miles from coast-to-coast in

Viet Nam War. He was there
during the horrific Tet Offensive in ’68., and it took him
more than a year to get back
in bowling shape in ’69 before

After being presented the Flowers for the Living Award from Flowers
committee member Frenchy LeTourneau, right, Johnny Petraglia said
“I was truly surprised and humbled. Anytime you get an award that
has previously gone to people like Dick Weber and Jack Reichert, it is
extremely special. I am honored.”
1970 season. In an interview in
2007, he told Stars & Strikes “I
learned through my experience
in Viet Nam and the military,
how great this country is and
how important freedom is.”
That experience inspired him
to represent the Bowlers to
Veterans Link, raising millions
for military vets through bowling. Petraglia has personally
organized many BVL fund raisers over the years, and visited
countless vets in VA hospitals
throughout his career.
After he won five PBA titles
in 1971, and three consecutive
ending with the Tournament
of Champions, all of the ball
companies were after him to
be on their pro staff. With his
dad’s encouragement, he chose
Brunswick. “Signing with
Brunswick was the best career
move of my life,” he said in the
2007 interview. “My dad told
me that the number one thing
they were looking for was character, and he was right. They
have been like a second family.
It is a great company to work
for.” Petraglia has never backed
down from taking a stand on
any issue that will help bowl-
ing. That commitment is one of
the reasons why he was proud
to serve three two-year terms
as PBA President. Petraglia’s
best friends in bowling also
speak of his character . . .
“Johnny, Dave Soutar and I
roomed together for 34 years
on the tour, and during all that
time, we never had one serious
argument,” said fellow Hall of
Famer Dave Davis. “He is very
honest and loyal, and a strong
family man.”
Judy and Dave Soutar, who
served alongside Petraglia on
the Brunswick Pro Staff had
this to say: “Dave and I know
Johnny as a great bowler, a
great story teller who is never
at a loss for words, and a great
friend. We share so many
wonderful memories.” In 2015,
Johnny Petraglia will celebrate
his 50th year as a PBA member and as one of bowling’s
greatest ambassadors of all
time. He joins past Flowers
Award winners Earl Anthony,
Joe Norris, Marion Ladewig,
Dick Weber, Don and Paula
Carter, Jack Reichert, and last
year’s winner John Summer to
mention only a few.

ARLINGTON — For the second consecutive season, Sierra
Kanemoto of Riverside, Ohio,
and Derick Holmes of Wichita,
Kan., have been selected to
the Dexter/USBC High School
All-American Team.
Ten bowlers, five boys and
five girls, were selected for the
2013-2014 Dexter/USBC High
School All-American Team.
Kanemoto and Holmes are just
the sixth and seventh bowlers
to make the team in back-toback seasons, and each also
was the top-ranked student in
their graduating class.
“Dexter is proud to recognize these 10 bowlers who not
only have been successful on
the lanes, but also in the classroom and in their communities,” said Bud Clapsaddle, Vice
President of Dexter Bowling.
This year’s selections mark
the ninth year Dexter has
named a high school All-American team. Student-athletes,
who are nominated by their
coach or athletic director, must
have a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade-point average, based
on a 4.0 scale, and had to
provide a letter of recommendation and a 500-word essay.
Each student-athlete will
receive a $1,000 scholarship
for being named to the team
and will be recognized at this

Baker wins PBA50 Northern
California Classic for 11th title
BRENTWOOD, Calif.
— Tom Baker of King, N.C.,
survived a championship
match battle of Professional
Bowlers Association Hall of
Famers Wednesday to win the
PBA50 Northern California
Classic presented by MOTIV
for his 11th career PBA50 Tour
title.
Baker, a four-time PBA50
Player of the Year, defeated fellow Hall of Famer and PBA50
Tour rookie Parker Bohn III
of Jackson, N.J., 290-245, in
the title match at Harvest Park
Bowl which was also his first
win of the season. In the first
six tournaments of the 2014
PBA50 Tour season each has
been won by a PBA Hall of
Famer.
“The whole day I had to
rely on my equipment,” said
the 59-year-old Baker who also
owns 10 PBA Tour titles. “I
must have used five or six balls
today and the ball I used in the
championship match I didn’t
even use all day.
“I was pretty fortunate to be
able to bowl for the title,” he
continued. “In the round of 16 I
was down 2-0 and had to battle
back to win the next three
games to pull it out. I was
having a lot of trouble leaving

it got pretty frustrating.”
Ironically Baker avenged
a championship match loss to
Bohn in the Brentwood Classic
PBA Tour tournament in 1998
where Bohn beat Baker 239-222
for the title.
“We were talking about that
and the one thing I remember
about that match is I left a big

said. “Naturally I was hoping
history wasn’t going to repeat
itself.”
With his win, Baker moves
into a tie for fourth on the
PBA50 Tour career titles list
with Gene Stus. John Handegard leads with 14 career titles
with Gary Dickinson and Dale
Eagle tied for second with 12
titles each.
In the semifinal round,
Baker advanced to the championship match by defeating Hall
of Famer Amleto Monacelli,
228-195, and Bohn defeated
five-time PBA Tour winner Eric
Forkel of Las Vegas, 242-198.
Bohn and Monacelli were trying for their second titles of the
season while Forkel was trying
for his first career PBA50 Tour
title.
Two-time defending champion Walter Ray Williams Jr.’s
quest for a third consecutive
Northern California Classic win
was thwarted with a 2-0 defeat
in the round-of-8 best-of-three
match against Forkel earlier in
the day.
The next stop for the PBA50
Tour will be Caveman Bowl in

Two bowlers shoot 800 at 2014
USBC Open Championships
Jon Trzcinski of Bay Shore,
N.Y., and Chris Nielson of Livonia, Mich., brought the number
of 800 series rolled at this
year’s United States Bowling
Congress Open Championships
to six on June 11 and June 12,
respectively.
A day removed from leading
Lodge Lanes Kids of Orlando,
Fla., into third place in Regular
Team with a 3,527 total,
Trzcinski rolled games of 243,
289 and 270 for an 802 series
and moved into a tie for second
place in Regular Singles.
The 23-year-old right-hander
finished his second USBC Open
Championships appearance
with a 2,196 all-events total,
which is sixth in Regular
All-Events.

WEEKLY GLANCE
(For June 14 – June 20, 2014)
Washington state bowler
perfect at USBC Women’s
Championships
Anna Green of Tacoma,
Wash., always hoped her bowling career would include a
perfect game, and that dream
came true at the 2014 United
States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships when she
finished her doubles event with
12 consecutive strikes.
The 53-year-old right-hander
became the third competitor of
the 2014 tournament, and 23rd in
the 95-year history of the USBC
Women’s Championships, to accomplish the feat. Tracey Stevens
of Dunellen, N.J., and Jeri
Espinoza of South San Francisco,
Calif., also rolled 300 games this
year at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center.
Green started doubles June
18 with games of 166 and 170
before making the right move,
which finally got her lined up.
The perfect finish helped her to
a 636 series, the highest in her
nine-year career at the Women’s
Championships.
“On the last ball of the second
game, I made an adjustment,
and it seemed pretty good,” said
Green, who added 583 in singles
and 552 in team for a career-best
1,771 all-events effort, placing
her in a tie for seventh place in
Division 2. “I told myself I would
keep throwing it there until it
didn’t work anymore, and it
worked all the way.”
Two new leaders emerge in
all-events at RSCC
Mitzi Nichols of Fort Sumner,
moved into second place in
Team All-Events with a 10,205
total.
Nielson’s 800 came in
dramatic fashion as he stepped
onto the approach at the
National Bowling Stadium
needing six pins on the final
shot of his team event to add
his name to the tournament record book. He left the 4-6-7-10
split on his final offering, but
it was enough, as he finished
with games of 269, 279 and 252
for 800 on the nose.
The 29-year-old left-hander
added 724 in singles and 630 in
doubles to finish his fifth Open
Championships campaign with
a career-best 2,154 all-events
total.
Two bowlers toss perfect
games at National Bowling
Stadium
Steven Miller of Houston
and first-timer Carl Boldt of
Pontiac, Mich., rolled 300
games at the USBC Open
Championships this week.
Through 110 days of competition this year, there have
been 32 perfect games at the
National Bowling Stadium.
Miller, a 30-year-old righthander, rolled games of 174 and
216 in his team event June 14
N.M., took control of Division
5 All-Events this week at 2014
USBC Women’s Championships,
while Angie Boone of Santa Barbara, Calif., moved into a tie for
the lead of Division 3 All-Events.
Nichols posted sets of 553
in singles, 496 in team and
469 in doubles to finish with a
1,518 total, surpassing Michele
Sedersten of Saronville, Neb.,
who previously held the lead
with 1,478.
Nichols’ singles score also
was enough to move her into
second place in Division 5
Singles. Laura Roberts of Council Bluffs, Iowa, leads with 558.
Boone put together sets of
601 in doubles, 577 in team and
527 in singles to match the 1,705
series rolled by Eileen Stires of
Hammonton, N.J.
A look ahead
As the 2014 USBC Women’s
Championships nears its June
30 finish, the top female bowlers in the country will visit the
RSCC this week in advance of
the USBC Queens and Senior
Queens, which will take place
at the National Bowling Stadium
from June 27-July 3.
There will be four live stream
broadcasts from the RSCC, starting on June 24 at 10 p.m. Eastern,
Some Strike It Hot of Albuquerque, N.M., will be featured. The
group captured the 2012 Diamond
Team title and finished runnerup in the same event in 2013.
The team also finished third in
Scratch Team in 2013.
On June 25 at 7 p.m. Eastern,
former Team USA member and
2012 USBC Queens champion
Diandra Asbaty and her talented
team will be spotlighted.
On June 26 at 3 p.m. Eastern,
the 2013 Diamond Singles and
All-Events champion Christine
Gill will return to the RSCC to
see if she can reclaim her spot
at the top of the standings. Her
before connecting on his final

and 690 series.
Boldt, a 22-year-old righthander, finished his Open
Championships debut June 16
with games of 300, 226 and 256
for a 782 series, just missing
the top 10 in Regular Singles.
He added a 611 series in team

short of his first title, but the
29-year-old seventh-year pro
was pleased about winning
three matches in his first PBA
Tour television appearance.
“My ‘A’ game is lofting,
and I did pretty well today,”
Valenta said. “I only made
two bad shots. I knew if other
guys played to the right of me,
they had to go straight. If they
moved left to where I was, then
it was playing my game against
yours and we’ll see who wins.
I wanted them to come my way
because I figured my rev rate
would be the equalizer.
“I had a great time,” he
added. “I got a little intense,
but I didn’t go crazy.”
In his first match, Valenta
threw strikes on his first five
shots and filled the final five
frames in cruising to a 237-172
win over Koivuniemi, a 13-time
PBA Tour winner from Hartland, Mich.
With the oil burning out
in the front part of the lane,
Valenta began lofting the ball
past the arrows and continued
striking in an easy 236-165 win
over Kent, a PBA rookie from
Yakima, Wash., who didn’t
strike until the eighth frame.
Valenta moved even farther
left and lofted the ball farther
down the lane, putting together
one string of three strikes in a
cat-and-mouse battle with Weber, a PBA Hall of Famer and
37-time titlist, in the semifinal
match. Weber trailed by four
pins after eight frames, but
missed a 7 pin spare attempt in
the ninth to let Valenta escape
with a 204-190 decision.
The title match was a frameto-frame battle all the way to
the 10th where Valenta doubled
to force O’Neill to duplicate his
feat for the win.

Just Paying
Attention
By Mark London

Over the years, I’ve written
about what Saturdays were
like in my youth. They would
start with junior leagues, then
go through one of the fastest
serving McDonald’s you’ll ever
experience, to settling down to
Roone Arledge’s ninety-minute
prelude to ‘ABC’s Wide World
of Sports’.
But what about Sundays?
If there wasn’t part two of
Saturday afternoon yard work,
there was cleaning my room
listening to Casey Kasem and
American Top 40. Any really
decent Top 40 radio station
carried the three, then later the
four-hour show, recapping the
top 40 songs from that week’s
Billboard magazine’s Hot 100
chart.
Kasem would uniquely
highlight cities in opposite
ends of the
country
whose
names
started
with the
same letter.
Coming out
of commercial usually twice
a show, he
might say, “From Fresno to
Fredericksburg, from Dallas
to Duluth, these are the forty
biggest songs in America this
week,” before resuming the
countdown.
No matter the part of the
country we lived at the time,
Kasem was there like clockwork. As a rookie radio DJ in
the early 80s, I had the honor
of spinning the eight sides of
the four LP albums the station
received each week, usually
from 2-6 a.m. on a Sunday
morning, also wondering about
the expense of distributing
those discs to several hundred
stations each week.
His portion of presenting the
weekly show spanned almost
20 years, until Shadoe Stevens,
and later Ryan Seacrest took
over. By that time, ABC Radio
could distribute the show via
satellite, as they had with the
rest of their news, sports, and
entertainment programming. I
would be surprised if that first
radio station still had those
weekly shows in its library
somewhere. Once they were
aired, they were not to be used
again, for any reason, ever.
################
Once a weekly AT40 ended
from September to December,
and hopefully January, it was
time for the next part of Sundays. Since this was the just
before the 16-foot home satellite
dishes appeared in backyards
across the country, we had
to trust the local TV guide in
dad’s newspaper in telling us
which NFL games were shown.
If the Steelers were on, all yard
work activity would cease, as
all household energy
would be
redirected
willing the
next higher
number
in the win
column.
Thankfully,
in the 1970s,
this happened often.
We were privy (and still are),
to have my Pittsburgher-for-life
Uncle Dave giving us information not heard outside the
‘Burgh about the team.
Often, he would use Head
Coach Chuck Noll’s press
conference as a starter point
of reference. Some weeks, the
press briefing would be shorted
than others, depending on
Noll’s patience for detailing a
point to a sometimes-not-thebrightest-reporter in the room,
especially if it concerned the
play calling of quarterback
Terry Bradshaw. Back at this
time, certain quarterbacks
could for the most part, call
their own plays.
Noll was not a back-slapper
or yelled like Lombardi, rather
giving players words, sometimes stern, to listen to and
process in their own way and
time. He was not a big believer in motivational speeches,
although a statement he made
during the 1974 playoff run
to the first Super Bowl win is
recalled with fondness and is a
moment in team history players
regard as highly as fans regard
The Immaculate Reception two
years earlier.
The Oakland Raiders had
just beat the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Miami Dolphins a dramatic first
round playoff game, ending
their quest to be the first team
to win three straight Super
Bowls. In what has become
known as the “Sea of Hands”
game, reporters and Raiders
fans thought they had just seen
Super Bowl 8 1 / 2, dismissing
the Raiders upcoming opponent
in the AFC Championship
Game.
In the Monday meeting back
at Steeler headquarters, Noll
told the players he had also
seen the quotes and remarks
from the Raiders/Dolphins
game. Rather than dismissing
the words, he told the players
he thought the best football
team in the NFL had not beat
Miami two days earlier, but
instead, even with all the early
season turmoil, was sitting
“right here in this room today.”
Years later, a few of the
players, including Joe Greene
and Rocky Bleier, said upon
hearing Noll’s statement they
wanted to charge out of the
room and play the Raiders
right at that moment. Instead,
they had to wait six more days
to clinch the franchise’s first
AFC title and a trip to Super
Bowl IX against the Minnesota
Vikings, undoubtedly boosted
with the confidence shown by
Noll.
Emperor Chaz, as local
sportswriter and Steeler radio
analyst (and Terrible Towel
inventor) Myron Cope referred
to Noll, was the first to implement a now-accepted practice
during Super Bowl week itself.
Up until this point, players
were pretty much sequestered
the practice field and to their
hotel with nightly bed-checks
and upon arriving in the
Super Bowl host city. In New
Orleans, Noll told the players
there were no bed-checks or
restrictions until later in the
week, allowing them to get
a French Quarter visit out of
their system.
Even after that Super Bowl
win, and other wins not so big,
Noll reminded his players they
were still on a quest for excellence, to be the best they could
be. For many, it took a life
away from Super Bowl trips for
those life lessons to hit home.
Like contemporary Tom
Landry, Noll stayed away from
the spotlight once the season
was over, turning down endorsements which could have
boosted his name and his bank
account nicely. Noll was even a
bit uncomfortable in having his
name adorn the football field at
St. Vincent College in Latrobe,
Pennsylvania, site of the Steeler
training camp for nearly 50
years.
What’s now known as the
Steeler way of doing things
started with the man they call
“The Chief”, Steeler founder
Art Rooney, the Rooney family,
but the winning portion, which
now has exceeded the first
forty years of losing, ending
in the aforementioned event
of December 23, 1972, is all
Chuck Noll and so very much
Western Pennsylvania and part
of the culture of my youth.

According to the Pittsburgh
Post-Gazette last week, The
Rev. David A. Zubik, bishop of
the Diocese of Pittsburgh, who
led the funeral service, offered
an observation.
Zubik was a young priest in
1979, he said, when he got the
idea to request that Noll speak
on leadership to a group of
high school seniors. To his surprise, Noll accepted the offer
on the condition that nobody
would know of his coming.
When Noll’s Steelers won
their fourth Super Bowl in
January 1980 – a record for a
head coach that stands to this
day – Zubik was worried he
might lose out on Noll, who
was scheduled to speak just a
week later. Sure enough, Noll
came anyway to speak to the
group of students.
“That was the point of
Chuck Noll’s life,” Zubik said.
“It didn’t matter how important
you were, or how valuable
you seemed to be in society.
In his eyes, everybody was
important.”
Coaching football was
something Chuck Noll did, but
it was so much more. He really
did leave things better than
when he arrived.
