THE SPIRIT OF THE MOONDANCE
and meet your challenges head on when you
Describing a Moondance experience is hard to put into words. It’s like trying to explain a rainbow
to someone who has never seen one. You can’t. When new friends, radiant sunrises, shared
accomplishments, and thrilling activities combine and intermingle, the result is indescribable. We
call it the “Spirit of the Moondance.”
friends right beside you.”
Like the sun and rain is to a rainbow, the “Spirit of the Moondance” needs a unique combination of
positive attitude and thirst for adventure. If you heed the call and bring a selfless spirit and a desire
to push your limits, we promise you one of the most rewarding experiences of your life.
- Jamie Freeman, 14, Spartanburg, SC
Every summer I try to meet with as many
groups as possible in order to stay connected
with the dynamic young adults who travel with
Moondance. To be able to spend a day or two
with each group and listen as they share why
they love these adventures, only reinforces why
it is so important to continue to provide these
opportunities. Time and time again I hear how
much they gained over the course of only a few
weeks together. I am often asked, “how can
that happen?” We simply use the outdoors to
teach life skills — communication, leadership,
friendship, fun and success!
It is our goal to provide a meaningful and rewarding
experience for every individual who travels with
Moondance. We offer several community service
programs in order to allow others an opportunity
to give back. As we continue to grow, we want to
offer a variety of programs and opportunities for
students with diverse interests.
Moondance is a wilderness and service
based adventure program offering a variety of
carefully designed safe and supportive outdoor
expeditions. Our adventures allow students
to participate in a combination of adventure
activities in some of the world’s most beautiful
and pristine wilderness areas.
I invite you to find out more about our programs
and philosophy through our catalog and enjoy
the extraordinary photographs taken this past
summer by our leaders and students. If you
dream of adventure, then I think you will like what
you see.
Every Moondance trip offers its students
unparalleled opportunities for personal growth.
Students broaden their horizons through travel
to new and unique destinations. They find their
curiosity and sense of connection to the larger
world stimulated by a rich set of experiences
and
encounters.

discover remarkable reserves of adaptability,
resourcefulness, and spirit while undertaking
adventurous and often challenging outdoor
activities. Moondance instructors work diligently

as for themselves, learning the importance of
positive “expedition behavior” as the foundation
for success in challenging circumstances.
The old cliché, “There’s no ‘I’ in team” never
takes on more meaning than on a Moondance
expedition, as students learn the value of both
giving to and relying on one another to create a
vibrant, healthy group dynamic.
Most importantly, Moondance cultivates
individual achievement within a strong context
of teamwork and community. On every
Moondance trip, students assume responsibility
for the other members of their group as well

THE EDGE
WHAT TO EXPECT
WHAT YOU DO
On the first day of your trip, your leaders meet
you at the airport or designated rendezvous
site. Once your equipment is surveyed to make
sure it is adequate for your adventure, we
proceed to trailheads, basecamps or hostels. At
your first night’s campsite of your Mountain or
Leadership adventure, you will be issued group
gear and learn the fundamental skills such as
tent set-up, safety protocol, stove operation
and how to pack your backpack. On your
Service adventure’s first night, you will adjust
to the cultural differences in another area of the
world.
“You have won our respect and admiration. Our boys have
been impacted by your program, staff and, of course, God’s amazing
creation. Many thanks.”
- Holly Josey, mother of Luke, Reese and Zach, Houston, TX
One of the true benefits of being a small company
is that we have the chance to personally know
every one of our students. In addition, we make
every effort to get to know each family before
their child’s trip begins. Whether we meet while
we are out promoting our programs, or during a
phone conversation, Moondance feels it is just
as important for us to know the families of our
students as it is for them to know us.
The personal touch we share with everyone at
Moondance creates a family atmosphere. As
one mother pointed out, “I always felt that Maria
www.moondanceadventures.com
was not just a name or number . . . but that she
was a very important individual to everyone at
Moondance.” Our President, Hayes Hitchens,
tries to visit almost every domestic course
during the summer so that he has the chance
to meet and talk with each student.
Moondance takes this same get-to-know-you
approach when we hire our staff. Not only do
our leaders need to have a passion for the
outdoors, they also must love sharing their
passion with teenagers. Because each group is
small, our staff gets to know every individual,
fostering their growth while maintaining a
delicate balance between role model, teacher
and friend.
Our program is built on the philosophy that
challenge builds character. Using the outdoors
as our classroom, we teach what we love —
backpacking, rock climbing, mountaineering,
etc. But far more than learning climbing or
paddling skills, you will develop life skills that
can be applied to everything you do when you
are back at home.
From the first moment of the trip, you learn
by doing. You learn to climb by clipping in
and climbing. You learn to paddle by running
rapids. You learn to communicate in another
language by bartering with vendors in Peru.
Most importantly, you learn to share in others’
challenges, fears, temporary setbacks and
ultimately their triumphs. Bring only motivation,
a burning desire to learn and a willingness
to share, and you will take home a sense of
accomplishment that will sustain you for years
to come.
DAY-TO-DAY ROUTINE
Each day involves one or more activities such as
backpacking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting,
sea kayaking, serving the community, etc. You
learn new backcountry and travel skills daily
or sharpen those you have already learned.
Though our programs can be both physically and
mentally challenging, you will find time to relax
– soaking up a little sunshine, photographing
the abundant wildlife, or swapping stories with
new friends.
Most courses consist of at least one backpacking
section. We start off slowly to allow you to get
used to your equipment, the altitude and your
group. During the day, you help plan routes,
select campsites and care for your group. At
night, you set up camp in remote areas, share
cooking and cleaning duties and reflect on the
day’s accomplishments. On every Moondance
trip, you learn to make the most of your
wilderness experience while also preserving our
most precious resources by practicing minimum
impact / Leave No Trace outdoor ethics.
STUDENT LEADERSHIP
Though leaders serve as mentors and teachers,
you are required to openly and honestly solve
problems and deal with challenging issues
that arise. In these situations, the leaders
offer encouragement and feedback while
empowering you to make choices and remain
accountable for the consequences. Because
there are inherent risks in backcountry travel,
leaders monitor groups very closely and turn
over leadership opportunities as your judgment
and skills sharpen. As in real life, most of the
risks are perceived rather than actual.
NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY
Many people will join a Moondance trip without
prior experience. For some, it is their first
time to sleep beneath the stars, hike in the
mountains or travel to another country. You
don’t have to be a great athlete or have had
prior experience to fully enjoy a Moondance
adventure. Anyone in good physical condition,
with a positive attitude, an adventurous spirit,
and willingness to be part of a small group will
find great success on his or her Moondance
adventure. Though our Leadership adventures
are more physically challenging, the same
positive attitude can make a huge difference
on all three types of adventures. In return, be
prepared to learn a ton about the outdoors
and how to travel comfortably and safely in the
backcountry and all over the world. In doing so,
you will be rewarded with an experience of a
lifetime.
FAMILY ATMOSPHERE &
FRIENDSHIP
Making new friends and having fun are just
two of the unique bonuses of any Moondance
trip. With a small group of positive, wholesome
and motivated teens living in a wilderness
environment, these bonds form quickly and
friendships can last a lifetime. Students tell us
every year that having this sense of family is
one of the best parts of their Moondance trip.
EXPEDITION BEHAVIOR
For some students, their trip will be the first time
they have spent an extended period of time
away from the comforts of home. For many, it
will be the first time they have worked together
in a group, with people from all over the country,
24 hours a day for weeks at a time. Therefore,
teamwork, good communication and a positive
attitude become very important. Good “EB”
is acting with the best interest of the group in
mind, looking out for other group members and
being a good team member yourself. It may
mean helping someone set up their tent, filling
their water bottle, or simply encouraging them
on a tough climb. It doesn’t take much to have
good EB, but it certainly makes a difference to
everyone on the trip.

THE MOONDANCE DIFFERENCE
SAFETY FIRST
SAFETY FIRST
WHEN DECIDING ON A SUMMER PROGRAM, THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPANIES FROM
WHICH TO CHOOSE. WHAT MAKES
MOONDANCE UNIQUE?
SMALL GROUPS
Our groups are designed to be no larger than
12 students with 2 adult instructors. This allows
for the best opportunity to get the most out of
your experience.
MOONDANCE PHILOSOPHY
Much more than teaching young people how
to climb, paddle or travel comfortably in the
outdoors, Moondance wants to instill in our
students greater values. Trust, communication,
responsibility, perseverance, respect – these
are just some of the values we want everyone
to gain.
LEADERS
More than teachers, our leaders are role
models and friends to our students. Great
care is taken in the selection and training of
our staff. Our leaders are able to make the
wilderness experience relevant to everyday life
by providing opportunities for our students to
take a leadership role in team building, group
decision-making and commitment to the group
effort.
ACTIVITIES
Whether it is backpacking, rock climbing or
whitewater rafting, we design a safe, learnby-doing approach to all of our activities. We
www.moondanceadventures.com
Safety is without question the foremost concern for any family looking into a wilderness program
and is of paramount importance on any Moondance trip.
maintain the highest safety standards through
out every activity. With technical activities
such as climbing or mountaineering, we use
subcontracted outfitters with professional
guides to give us the best possible instruction
and safety.
BEHIND THE SCENES
NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY
Our students are motivated, intelligent, and
share a common thirst for adventure. They are
energetic, open-minded and positive. In 2008,
Moondancers came from 32 different states and
5 foreign countries.
All we require is an enthusiastic attitude and
willingness to try new activities. Many of our
students come on our program never having
slept under the stars, but that soon changes!
PERSONAL TOUCH
It is important for us to know our students and
families. We want everyone to feel very much
a part of the Moondance family. Our director,
Hayes Hitchens, will visit almost every domestic
group at some point during the summer.
DIVERSE PROGRAMS
Over the 14 years that Moondance has been
around we’ve traversed some pretty amazing
terrain. We offer domestic and international
trips in the world’s most desirable locales. We
offer a chance to learn technical and wilderness
skills, to perform community service, and to
immerse yourself in the culture of the most
incredible places.
We are a small company with tons to do. We are
seasoned wilderness travelers, young at heart,
detail oriented, organized and productive.
WHO ARE MOONDANCERS?
We want to create an atmosphere where we allow our students to stretch their limits while insuring
their well being. Safety is continually taught and practiced throughout every course, and students
play integral roles in our commitment to the safety of the entire group.
We take great pride in our excellent safety record and work hard to provide a quality experience for
our students. This is a direct reflection of our well-designed courses, detailed protocol for conducting
safe activities and our low student-to-staff ratio. We constantly monitor and evaluate risks for each
trip and make managing these risks a year round responsibility. We use only the finest outfitters
and guide services for technical activities such as rock climbing, mountaineering, and whitewater
rafting.
Our leaders are integral to the safety for each trip. Prior to the start of our programs, our trip leaders
participate in an intensive, 10-day training where safety policies and procedures are discussed.
All of our wilderness leaders are certified as Wilderness First Responders, an 80-hour course in wilderness medical training. All leaders carry an
extensive first aid kit at all times and are familiar with the emergency safety support systems in the areas we travel.
We must learn to manage risks daily while living in the wilderness. Safety is not something that Moondance, or any program, can guarantee.
Participating in outdoor adventure activities involves inherent risks and dangers that can lead to injury, property damage or even loss of life. Almost
any activity can be potentially dangerous. These risks cannot be predicted and can include forces of nature and the possibility of accidents. We
discuss how to respect and evaluate risks throughout each trip. We want to teach each participant that responsible behavior, good judgment, and a
concern for group safety are the most valuable assets in the outdoors.
LEADER OF THE DAY
Wilderness expeditions allow many opportunities for the development of leadership qualities. We encourage
everyone to assume various leadership roles throughout the trip and will designate two “leaders of the day.”
At night, the LODs meet with instructors to discuss plans for the upcoming day. They are responsible for
helping everyone break camp in a timely manner, deciding when and where to stop for snacks, water, and
lunch, and most of all, for keeping a positive attitude, particularly during challenging situations. The LODs
make decisions only after thorough group discussions and are responsible for writing in the group journal
for that day and leading the moon up discussion.
MOON UP
Every evening, groups will gather to discuss and debrief the day. These “moon ups” provide a great
opportunity to talk about daily adventures, to revel in each other’s accomplishments, to mentally prepare for
upcoming challenges, to sort through differences, or to have another opportunity to get to know everyone
better. We think it is the perfect way to end the day.

LETTER FROM A STUDENT THE TIME OF MY LIFE”
„
HayesI am writing you, on my own will, to possibly
alleviate you from your busy schedule and
business e-mails to tell you about my life
changing experience I had this summer. I just
recently returned from the Northern Lights trip
in Alaska led by Jack and Molly. I came into
Moondance having only heard of amazing
experiences but now I can say I had the time
of my life.
Everything was perfect on my trip. Having come
back from Alaska, I can say that I have come to
peace with life. With leaving for college in less
than two weeks, I can say I am finally ready to
leave and be on my own. The lessons I learned
extended much further than just backcountry
skills. Living simply, I would have to say, was
one of the most rewarding things I learned and
could have ever experienced. And being in such
a gorgeous place like Alaska made everything
that much more special. Both Jack and Molly
should be commended greatly for what they do.
www.moondanceadventures.com
They are both amazing people. The love for
what they were doing showed in every aspect
of our trip. Most of all their passion for the
outdoors and working with us kids absolutely
made the trip. Over time they became not only
our leaders and teachers, but great friends and
just “one of us.”
The friendships I came home with were life
lasting. Spending 21 days, 24 hours a day with
a group made our connection so much closer
and we truly got to know each other very well.
When I got home my mom asked me, “Aren’t
you glad to be home?” I honestly told her I was
not. The people I met were wonderful and we all
were saying how we wish we could spend more
time with each other. I have been keeping up
with everyone so far and miss all of them and the
times we shared together greatly. I came away
from Alaska and my Moondance experience
with not only a backpack full of dirty clothes,
but life-lasting friendships, life lessons, and an
experience filled with unforgettable moments.
Whether it was summiting a mountain, paddling
15 miles, dancing to Paul Simon in a parking
lot, or just hanging out and sharing the good
times with one another while looking out to the
sight of calving glaciers, our group and times
we spent together were amazing, filled with
smiles and many laughs.
Hopefully one day I will be able to share, with a
group of my own, what Jack and Molly shared
with my group and me. I could not have seen
my last summer before college being spent any
other way. I want to thank you, Hayes and all of
Moondance, for all you do to keep this program
available for students because it changes lives.
The wilderness truly is the greatest classroom
there is.
Sincerely,

LEADERSHIP & STAFF
LEADERSHIP & STAFF
Hayes founded Moondance in 1995 as a way to
share outdoor adventures with young people.
He has been working and designing programs
for teenagers since 1975. Many of his thirty
plus years in organized camping were spent at
Camp Deerhorn in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, a
camp founded by his grandfather in 1930. A
graduate of Charlotte Country Day School and
the University of Alabama, Hayes served The
Lovett School in Atlanta for twelve years as the
Dean of Students and the Director of Summer
Programs. He has participated in outdoor
education programs with the North Carolina
www.moondanceadventures.com
Outward Bound School, the National Outdoor
Leadership School (NOLS), and the Nantahala
Outdoor Center (NOC). Hayes spends each
summer visiting students on their trips. Hayes’
wife, Michael, is a native of Nashville, TN and
graduate of Harpeth Hall and The University
of the South - Sewanee. Michael spends her
quality time caring for their daughter, Hunter.
Hunter is eagerly awaiting her first Moondance
trip in 2018. They live in Asheville, NC where
they coordinate all Moondance adventures.
Our skilled, dedicated, and caring staff is the
most important element for the success of
Moondance Adventures. Our leaders are vital
to the integrity and safety of our program. Their
responsibilities are quite diverse; they are
instructors, leaders, facilitators, friends, fellow
participants, and role models.
More than the challenging programs and
breathtaking scenery, Moondance leaders form
the nucleus of what makes this experience
such a positive part of the program. Great care
is taken when selecting our staff. At the heart
of every Moondance expedition is a group of
highly qualified, dedicated, enthusiastic adult
instructors who have been carefully selected
from a large group of applicants. Many of our
leaders return year after year with many being
past participants. They are well-traveled,
bright, energetic, conscientious adults with
a healthy sense of humor, who love sharing
their enthusiasm for the outdoors. Moondance
leaders are united in their passion to create the
best experience possible and are most certainly
the key to our success.
All leaders are a minimum of 21 years old,
with the average age being 25. They are well
educated and have completed, or are on
their way to completing, their undergraduate
degree with many pursuing advanced degrees.
They enjoy working with teenagers and have
extensive training in wilderness programs and
experiential education. Many are graduates
of the National Outdoor Leadership School
(NOLS) or Outward Bound. Many have fulltime careers in secondary education or as full
time outdoor educators. Each leader has a
minimum of 80 hours of medical training as a
Wilderness First Responder. Their primary job
is to keep students safe and comfortable. To
ensure that Moondance maintains its “safety
first” philosophy, the student-to-staff ratio never
exceeds 6:1.
During our comprehensive 10-day staff training,
each leader renews his/her commitment to
Moondance’s philosophy and rededicates
himself/herself to serving Moondance students.
Every Moondance leader is committed to the
idea that to lead, we must serve.

The Colorado Trail trip is an invigorating exploration into the heart of the
southwestern Colorado high country. Imagine a journey into a wilderness
where clear blue lakes dot the landscape far below alpine towers of craggy
peaks, and eagles soar in the big skies of the West. With the Rocky
Mountains as a backdrop, you’ll build a strong foundation of outdoor

like “Big Booty” and “Ninja Moose”, the night was full of laughs. This group
continues to impress us with their positive attitudes and humor, and we all
went to bed psyched for an early wake-up and SUMMIT DAY!

PACIFIC NORTHWEST EXPOSURE
MOUNTAIN
The Pacific Northwest is a land of rocky shores, cool spruce forests, and
jagged summits that tower above spirited rivers. Desert canyons and
glacier-carved alpine meadows beckon to be explored while the sapphire
blue waters of the Pacific will entice you to linger in this home of orcas,
bald eagles, and seals. Whether new to backcountry expeditions or a
seasoned veteran, after three weeks of adventure, you’ll come to know
this land intimately — and may never want to leave.
Notes from the Field
Being in the backcountry is a wonderful place to get away from all the
distractions of society and think about life. Many of the kids commented
how great it was to just be quiet and process the various thoughts that
go through their minds. On the other hand, the backcountry is a perfect
place to be yourself. Many of the nights, especially the third night, we all
broke out into choreographed dances thanks to Willy and Betsy. Taylor
was cracking us up when he was competing with Willy to make funny
faces in the cameras. It makes me giggle just thinking about it! Don’t worry
parents, hopefully you can share in our fun when you see the videos on
the kids’ cameras!

We just returned from our summit of Mount Rainier! We split up into
separate rope teams and by 2am, everyone was on the mountain. The
stream of headlamps was quite a sight! We crossed glaciers, stepped over
crevasses, climbed scree fields in our crampons (an awkward thing to
do!), kicked steps up steep inclines and saw a beautiful sunrise like no
other any of us had ever seen. We are reminded that life isn’t sustained
on top of a mountain but rather on its sides. There are revelations to be
had, lessons to learn, and beauty to absorb during all parts of a climb. We
were thankful for our guide Phursumba’s words of wison. He told us to
remember that “tough times never last, tough people do!”

Notes from the Field
The last four days of Mont Blanc were some of the most demanding trails
the group has encountered. We relied on all of the wilderness travel skills
and group strengths we have developed so far to cover many miles and
multiple high alpine passes. The last two days the group traveled a stretch
which provided incredible vistas, a rustic night of cabin lodging, and even
snowfall our last morning. Luckily the snow stopped and the sun came
out for our 18 km descent into the bustling town of Zermatt. After a treat
of local ice cream cones (multiple scoops all around), the group enjoyed
visiting the shops and markets in Zermatt before returning back to the
hotel to find a huge dinner of salad and pasta prepared by their fearless
leaders -— tonight it’s the group’s turn to cook!

mountain as “wide as all the world, great, high and unbelievably white in

Notes from the Field
Waking up this morning to the sights and sounds of our new home for
the week, we were filled with enthusiasm and anticipation to start the
community service section of our adventure. After being welcomed into
this remote community with an extravagant breakfast of pancakes, eggs,
juice, mango and granola we were ready to meet the kids we would
be working with. Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, these kids were just as
excited as we were. Throughout the day, our eyes were opened to an
entirely different culture and way of life. Animals we’d never seen before
would stroll unnoticed by the locals! Amazing!

We then went snorkeling and counted fish by the dozens. Tangs, trigger

were everywhere! To think of seeing so many of an endangered species!
Crazy!
With lush rainforests, diverse marine life, active volcanoes and worldrenowned surf, Hawaii is a paradise for all. Combining rugged coastlines

Whew! What a day it’s been. We’ve just met some of the most incredible
animals in the world! Our canine friends howled us awake this morning,
just in time to make some breakfast and get some of the chores done
around the ranch. Cole and Hunter decided to feed the pack and learned
how hungry wolves can be! We learned the difference between the dogs
we have back at home and the canis lupus, and how important these
large predators are in the wild. Tomorrow we get to put in a hard day’s
work helping to put the finishing touches on the new barn. Then, we have
to leave the company of our new 4-legged friends, but the whole crew
is excited to frolic on the dunes where we get to learn about the shifting
wind, water, and sand (not to mention play in the falls to cool off, and to
rinse off our sandy legs).
Located in the breathtaking Rocky Mountains, this trip is for those who
want to taste a Colorado adventure while making rewarding contributions
to the pristine wildlife and people of the region. Whether hiking the tallest
dunes in North America, swimming in snowmelt streams, meeting wolves
in captivity, rafting a tumbling mountain river, summiting a fourteener, or
restoring sensitive alpine ecosystems—this trip is bound to be nothing
less than a deeply rewarding experience.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW DIFFICULT ARE THE EXPEDITIONS?
While our programs will ask you to push yourself both mentally and physically,
they are designed for you to enjoy regardless of your previous experience or skills.
You do not have to be a great athlete to be successful on a Moondance adventure.
You must, however, have a positive, enthusiastic attitude and be eager to try new
activities. Each expedition presents its own unique set of challenges, but anyone
in good physical condition can complete them. Above all, we aim to teach you how
to live safely and responsibly in the wilderness while also having fun learning as
a group. Please note, Leadership adventures present more physical challenges
than Mountain or Service adventures, and students are given more responsibility
on Leadership adventures.
I’VE NEVER DONE ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE, DO I LACK
THE NECESSARY EXPERIENCE?
Absolutely not! One of the unique qualities about working as a group is that we all
have different levels of experience when we start our expedition. However, by the
end of the program, we are all equally confident and knowledgeable in our skills.
The person who may have helped you on the first day will ask for your assistance
later on. That’s one of the highlights of a Moondance experience.
HOW SAFE ARE THE PROGRAMS?
Safety is the most important aspect of any Moondance trip. All of our programs
are well supervised by experienced leaders. We only use the finest outfitters for
technical activities such as rock climbing, mountaineering and whitewater rafting.
a lifetime of world and wilderness travel. However, students do not need to be
highly experienced in the outdoors to participate in any Moondance expedition.
The activities are well within the abilities of all participants.
WHICH TRIP SHOULD I TAKE?
We cannot pinpoint exactly which trip each individual should take. However, we
can steer you in the right direction by offering certain criteria you should consider
when selecting your Moondance course. Consider the following questions: What
activities do I want to experience? What region of the country do I want to learn
more about? How much time do I have to spend? Call the Moondance office, and
we will be happy to discuss the various programs to find the right one for you.
MAY I COME WITH A FRIEND?
Though we know that many students want to share this adventure with a friend,
the true benefits of an experience like Moondance come from not knowing
anyone prior to the start of the trip. Therefore, we highly encourage friends to
enroll in entirely different courses or request that you are placed in separate
sections of the same trip. Because we do not want to hinder your fellow group
members’ experience, we try to limit the number of friends to a maximum of two
per group.
WHERE ARE OTHER STUDENTS FROM?
Our students come from all over the United States. Moondance students in 2008
came from 32 different states as well as England, Germany, Spain and Italy.
WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING COURSE?
WHAT ARE THE GROUPS LIKE?
Our Moondance Leadership course, designed specifically for older students, is
our most challenging course. Other challenging trips include our Northern Lights,
Grand Ascents and Chamonix Alps. These are designed for those who want an
extended backcountry experience. All of our trips including those in Colorado,
California, Washington, and Wyoming offer unique challenges; they are geared
for students who are motivated and want to get the most out of their summer.
We also offer community service programs in Hawaii, Costa Rica, Ecuador,
Galapagos Islands, Peru and Tanzania. Given the international travel component,
these courses allow you to immerse yourself in the respective country’s culture
and landscape.
Students are divided into co-ed groups with 9-12 students along with two adult
leaders. All students are similar in age to one another. We strive to balance the
WHAT LENGTH TRIP SHOULD I TAKE?
Though a lot depends on how much time you have available, we have found that
the longer the adventure, the greater the rewards. A 3 week to 3 1/2 week program
enables you to further develop your group’s dynamics, hone your outdoor skills,
learn new skills, explore new terrain, and strengthen the bond between your new
friends.
WHAT IS THE BEST COURSE FOR SOMEONE WITH LITTLE
EXPERIENCE?
The Blue Ridge Expedition and Colorado Trail are designed for our middle school
age students and are great introductions to wilderness living. The Rocky Mountain
Way, Big Wild and Pacific Northwest Exposure programs are a good way to begin

group into half girls and half guys; however, this is not always the case.
TERMS OF AGREEMENT
HOW MUCH TIME DO WE SPEND DRIVING?
HOW TO ENROLL
AIRFARE IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE COST OF YOUR TRIP
We try to keep the time in our new 12 and 15-passenger vans to a minimum.
We only use the vans to transport us to and from an activity. We have carefully
designed our programs so that there is only a short drive between each section
of the trip.
Apply early! Because of our limited number of openings for each trip,
applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Many trips fill
early, so we urge you to submit your application along with your $800 deposit
at the earliest possible date to ensure you get the desired course. There is
no deadline for submitting applications. After May 1st, you should call the
Moondance office to inquire about any available openings.
Moondance utilizes the services of Wilcox Travel to assist with efficient coordination
of participants. They are extremely knowledgeable about our guidelines for arrival
and departure times, connecting time allowances, and securing the best available
fares. Wilcox Travel also has the capability to assist with emergencies should they
occur such as cancelled or delayed flights. Planning ahead gives them time to get
the best deals, so make your travel arrangements early!
WHO ARE THE LEADERS?
Without question, the leaders make the difference in the expedition, so great care
is taken to select the people we feel will make outstanding instructors, role models
and friends. Moondance leaders are carefully selected based on their experience
with young people, their knowledge and love of the outdoors, plus a healthy
sense of humor. Many are teachers or graduate students who love working with
teenagers and sharing their knowledge of the outdoors. Every adventure has at
least two leaders, one male and one female. Before your trip begins, you will
receive our newsletter including a brief biography about each of our leaders.
APPLICATION/DEPOSIT
WHAT KIND OF EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
ENROLLMENT AND ADMISSION POLICIES
A complete clothing and equipment list will be sent to you upon acceptance. Many
of these items you already have or can borrow from friends. A few essential items
will be a pair of sturdy hiking boots, backpack, sleeping bag, ground pad, rain gear
and personal clothing. Moondance will supply all of the group equipment such
as tents, stoves, cooking supplies, technical gear, etc. Moondance has a limited
supply of Marmot/Dana Design® and Arcteryx® backpacks for rental.
Once we receive your application and deposit, we will contact your teacher
references to receive a positive recommendation and then call you to confirm
your enrollment. We will then forward to you an acceptance letter and TIP
(Trip Information Packet) that will include required forms including, but
not limited to, the Moondance Medical Form, Clothing and Equipment List,
Travel Information, Acknowledgement of Risk from both Moondance and all
subcontracted outfitters for that particular trip. These forms contain important
information about our program, the risks associated with the program and your
responsibilities. All forms must be completed and signed by participant and
parents and/ or legal guardian. Failure to return these in a timely manner will
jeopardize your space. Moondance reserves the right to cancel applicants with
no return of fees if our forms are not received by May 15, 2009.
HOW DO I APPLY?
Fill out the enclosed application and return it along with an $800 deposit. You
may also fill out our online application. More detailed information on your specific
course will be sent to you upon acceptance.
To apply, complete the registration form located on page 57 in the catalog and
mail it with an $800 deposit check, or charge it to your Visa or MasterCard. This
deposit will be applied towards the full tuition of the program. The deposit is
fully refundable if the applicant is not accepted. Both a parent and the student
must sign the original application. We also ask all applicants to send a recent
photograph to help put names and faces together.
WHAT IS THE FOOD LIKE?
TUITION/FINAL PAYMENT
Having good food is essential to a positive experience. While most meals in the
backcountry taste better after a long day on the trail, all of our meals are simple
and plentiful; we never want you to go hungry. Part of your responsibility will
be to help prepare and cook the meals. You will have foods such as pancakes,
pasta, pizza, chicken fajitas and even brownies! Plus, there is always the bag of
GORP (trail mix) for the trail.
Upon acceptance, the tuition balance is due and must be submitted no later than
March 1st, 2009. Applications mailed after March 1st must be accompanied by
full payment. Our fee for each expedition is based on per person. All payments
must be in U.S. dollars. Airfare is not included in the cost of the trip except
Hawaiian Islands, Chamonix Alps, Machu Picchu, Ecuador / Galapagos, and
Tanzania.
WHERE DO WE SLEEP AT NIGHT?
TUITION DISCOUNTS
We use state of the art 3-person Mountain Hardwear® tents and Moss® tarps,
provided by Moondance, but we encourage everyone to sleep out beneath the
stars.
(For discounts to apply, full tuition must be received by March 1st, 2009):
•
HOW OFTEN DO WE SHOWER?
Most of our expeditions will be out for several days at a time. That is the beauty
of a backcountry experience, because everyone gets equally as dirty! In between
activities we will resupply food, have an opportunity for a shower and possibly
do laundry as well.
•
Receive a $100 tuition credit for any referral you provide that signs
up for a 2009 Moondance Adventure. The referral must list you on
their application to receive credit.
Receive $100 tuition credit for any Moondance Alumni who signs up
for a 2009 adventure.
TRIP CANCELLATION INSURANCE
To insure you against unexpected emergencies, we strongly urge parents to
secure their investment by purchasing an inexpensive tuition refund insurance
policy. This reimburses you should you have to cancel due to unforeseen
reasons. More information is included in your acceptance packet.
The tuition for our Hawaiian Islands, Machu Picchu, Ecuador / Galapagos, and
Kilimanjaro trips includes airfare to and from the gateway city – that being either
San Francisco or Atlanta. Moondance will secure these flights, but we suggest
reserving airline tickets to and from these U.S. cities through Wilcox Travel. They
will coordinate the smooth transition to get all students to the arriving city around
the same time. Flights will be coordinated with other students from your area,
enabling them to travel on the same flight and, when possible, be seated together.
Unfortunately, frequent flyer tickets are not available for these courses.
PAYMENT DEADLINES
If final payments have not been received by the March 1st deadline, Moondance
has the right to cancel any application for which payments have not been
received, and shall have no obligation to refund payments previously made. A 3%
late fee will be applied to any outstanding balance more than 15 days past due.
Moondance reserves the right to cancel any unpaid applicants whose full tuition is
more than 30 days past due with no return of fees.
ADDITIONAL COSTS/SPENDING MONEY
Students should have a small amount of money for incidentals such as souvenirs,
gifts, showers and personal items. We recommend $50 per week of expedition;
we encourage bank check cards or ATM cards rather than cash.
REFUND POLICY
When you sign up for a Moondance trip, you have accepted a limited space within
a small group. Once that space is reserved, we are no longer able to offer it to
others. When a student withdraws before the start of their trip, whether personal,
academic or medical reason, or if a student withdraws (or is dismissed) after the
trip begins because of medical or other reason, Moondance is no longer able to
fill that space. Moondance cannot recover course expenses if you cancel, even if
due to illness or injury. The seasonal nature of our program prevents any tuition
refund, or the reduction of tuition for late arrival, early withdrawal, or cancellation
for any reason. Expenses are contracted for the season and are based on a totalgroup, rather than a per-person basis. Investments have been made in staffing,
planning, food and equipment purchases before the trip.
The parent of any applicant who withdraws from his/her trip must do so in writing.
If a notice of cancellation is received in writing before February 1st, the applicant
forfeits $500 of the $800 deposit. An applicant, who withdraws from his/her course
after February 1st but before March 1st, will be refunded the entire tuition, less the
$800 deposit. An applicant, who withdraws from his/her trip after March 1st forfeits
the entire tuition, provided the trip does not fill. If the trip does fill, then Moondance
will refund the entire tuition, less the $800 deposit.

TRANSPORTATION
Trips begin at a major airport where all students are met by their trip leaders.
We travel in new, 12 and 15 passenger vans to transport us between activities,
keeping time on the road to a minimum.
OUR OFFICE
If you need help with anything, we encourage you to call our office; we will gladly
help you with any questions or concerns you may have. Moondance strives to
provide the best personalized communication to all of our families. From your
first contact with the office until you are back home after your trip, we aim to take
care of you. Feel free to give us a call to discuss which trip would be appropriate
for you and how best to get prepared. Please call 1-800-832-5229, or e-mail us:
[email protected].
GROUP PLACEMENT
One of the true benefits of a backcountry experience is meeting and living with
other students from around the country. The bonds that form over a short period
of time cannot be easily duplicated. Each expedition group is co-ed and never
larger than twelve students which are grouped by similar age. On almost every
trip, we will have multiple groups and it is important to divide students by age
to create compatible groups. Moondance reserves the right to make the final
decision on all groupings. There are always at least two qualified leaders (one
male, one female) with each group. It is the Moondance policy that no more than
two friends are in the same group. All applicants must submit a teacher reference
to ensure diverse, but workable groupings, and every student is assumed to be
highly motivated and group-oriented.
TRIP INFORMATION PACKET
Upon acceptance, each participant will receive a Trip Information Packet, which will
include every detail you will need to know for your trip: course description, travel
information, medical forms, student questionnaire, general liability release forms,
and equipment and clothing list. We will supply you with liability release forms
from both Moondance and the professional outfitters with whom we subcontract
throughout our trips. These forms must be signed by a parent/guardian and the
student and should be returned within 14 days of notification of acceptance. All
medical forms must be returned to our office no later than May 1st. Until your
forms have been received and reviewed, your admission is still pending. It is the
parent/guardian’s obligation to notify us of any changes in their child’s physical or
emotional condition once their medical form has been returned.

CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT
ITINERARY CHANGES
A detailed clothing and equipment list that describes what and how much to bring
will be sent to each student in your acceptance packet. These items include
many that you already have – fleece, long underwear, Chacos®, etc. Since each
Moondance trip is different, these items may vary, though you will be required
to provide necessary personal equipment such as a pair of sturdy hiking boots,
backpack, sleeping bag, ground pad, and good rain gear. Moondance has a
limited number of Arcteryx® and Marmot ® backpacks for rental use. Please
call to inquire.
Itineraries are subject to change without notice due to unforeseen problems that
may cause alteration to the schedule. This is likely to happen due to the nature
of outdoor travel. MOONDANCE RESERVES THE RIGHT TO CHANGE AN
ITINERARY. If an area or activity must be cancelled, every effort will be made to
replace it with a comparable one.
GROUP GEAR
Moondance provides all state-of-the-art group equipment, including lightweight
Mountain Hardwear® tents or Moss® parawings, backcountry stoves, cookware,
technical gear, helmets, climbing rope, etc.
BACKCOUNTRY ACCOMMODATIONS
Moondance encourages all students to take full advantage of the backcountry
experience by sleeping out under the stars or in lightweight mountain tents.
Occasionally we will use organized campgrounds with full facilities. Showers are
not available on a daily basis, so when you have the opportunity to take them,
they become a genuine treat.
FOOD
Being well fed is important to the success of any trip. Moondance strives to provide
students with food that is wholesome, simple and, since we oftentimes carry it all
on our backs, lightweight. Though food generally tastes better when you are in
the wilderness, we aim for variety and good taste as we try to teach students how
to cook and bake in the backcountry. Fresh fruit and vegetables are provided to
ensure a well-balanced and delicious menu. Everyone takes part in the planning
and preparation of the meals, and each participant gets to practice backcountry
cooking skills. You’ll be amazed at your creativity and cooking talents.
COMMUNICATION
When we are not in remote areas, Moondance leaders are in frequent contact
with the main office. Parents can follow the trip and read highlights by visiting
our Trips Logs page on our website www.moondanceadventures.com. The
Moondance office is open throughout the summer should an emergency arise.
On each trip you will have opportunities to write letters and postcards to family
and friends. Occasionally you will have the opportunity to use a telephone to
call home, but we strongly discourage taking advantage of the phone. One
of the lessons we hope to teach you is to work through the challenges and
accomplishments and communicate within your group.
COME PREPARED/GETTING IN SHAPE
The respective courses demand different levels of fitness from participants. The
courses are challenging but not beyond the reach of anyone in good physical
condition. The better prepared you are, the more you will enjoy your trip.
PROGRAM LENGTH
Courses range from 2 weeks to 3 1/2 weeks. For those who want to maximize
their leadership skills, our longer programs allow you to get a full dose of outdoor
excitement. You will learn to travel comfortably in a wilderness environment and
be amazed at how close your group becomes. Call the Moondance office to
discuss which trip would be appropriate for you.
KEEPING A POSITIVE ATMOSPHERE
With all Moondance programs, a positive attitude, a willingness to contribute to
the group, trust, communication, honesty, and integrity are all keys to a successful
community. Students must maintain a fundamental respect for the rights and
dignity of others. Although some expectations and standards may be decided
within each group, those that relate to safety, the law, and other obvious factors
are simply not negotiable.
EQUIPMENT LOSS or DESTRUCTION
By signing the application, parents agree to be responsible for the willful destruction
or loss by their child of any equipment not belonging to them. They agree to
reimburse Moondance for such loss of destruction of property and equipment.
Students’ personal property and equipment is his/her responsibility. Moondance
assumes no liability for any loss or destruction of that property.
safety issues or their leader’s instructions are examples of behavior that will lead
to expulsion. If a student is expelled, there will be no refund. The parent/guardian
is responsible for any costs incurred by Moondance as a result of the departure
(including, but not limited to transportation fees, costs incurred by Moondance
staff accompanying the participant, and expenses related to rejoining the group).
Payment for transporting the student home shall be the direct responsibility of the
parent/guardian to the transportation company. Parents must understand that
participants leaving early for any reason may not be accompanied by staff on any
part of their trip home.
MEDICAL AUTHORIZATION
Moondance staff and/or the director have the right to give first aid to the participant
and are hereby authorized, on medical advice, to hospitalize or proceed with any
medical treatment or surgery in the event of a medical emergency. Every effort
will be made to contact the parent/guardian in the event of a medical emergency
or serious illness. Moondance requires participants to have a current health
examination by a licensed physician; this may require updated immunizations.
Medical forms must be returned to the Moondance office by May 1st. All medical
bills incurred for treatment of illness or accident will be forwarded to the parent for
payment. All applicants must be covered by medical insurance.
LEAVE NO TRACE
Moondance strongly supports Leave No Trace (LNT), a national education program
whose goal is to promote responsible use of wilderness areas and outdoor ethics.
The LNT program is dedicated to building awareness, appreciation, and most of
all an abiding respect for our delicate wilderness areas. Through a shared effort
to protect and maintain the land and its valuable resources, we can continue to
enjoy our outdoor recreation areas. Our goal for each Moondance expedition is to
foster respect for the natural environment and instill a commitment to Leave No
Trace ideals in each student.
LEAVE NO TRACE PRINCIPLES:
1. Plan ahead & prepare
2. Travel & camp on durable surfaces
3. Dispose of waste properly
4. Leave what you find
A NOTE TO PARENTS
We are proud that Moondance seeks positive, enthusiastic, motivated and
team-oriented individuals. The dynamics of each group is a key to our success.
Moondance is not a program for students with behavioral, motivational or
rehabilitation issues. We will deny admission to anyone we believe is unable to
meet the physical, mental and safety demands of our programs.
5. Minimize campfire impacts
6. Respect wildlife
7. Be considerate of others
