CREATING A STATE OF PEACE
guns, Guns, GUNS
How the Fringe Defines Freedom
At local parks, grocery stores, coffee shops and insurrectionist
rallies, “open carry” proponents are packing loaded weapons.
Only a miniscule percentage of gun owners are taking part
in this new nationwide epidemic of irresponsibility. But
whether carried concealed or carried openly, guns in public
places make us all less safe, not more.
The practice of carrying loaded guns in public is a real threat
that demands a response from the public and policymakers.
Pictured are scenes from open carry
rallies in April. Only about 50 people
attended the national rally in Virginia
(above, lower left). Rallies were also
held in Wisconsin (lower right).
BREAKING NEWS: Jesus
Gonzalez, a spokesperson
and “hero” of the open carry
movement, was charged
on May 13 with a
Milwaukee homicide.
Visit WaveEdFund.org for
updates on this case and
for information about how
you can get involved to help
prevent gun violence.
There’s a big picture danger here, too. The fringe defines
“freedom” as including a right to carry any gun, anywhere.
That view has for far too long dictated gun policy decisions
here and nationwide. The freedom we all deserve to enjoy is
freedom from gun violence.

“... the guys with the guns make the rules.”
— Wayne LaPierre, NRA Executive Vice President, in a 2009 speech to the CPAC convention
“If the present course of human events don’t change, then we will have another bloody revolution.”
— Skip Coryell, national Second Amendment March organizer and author of Blood in the Streets: Concealed Carry and the OK Corral
“I am an open carry advocate and I don’t much care who is offended by exercise of our rights…”
— Newspaper online reader comment after an open carry demonstration in downtown Madison
Success!
Background Check Hearings
In the past few months, we have made great strides forward in our
work to prevent gun violence.
Following a two-year postcard and coalition-building campaign calling
for criminal background checks on all firearm sales in Wisconsin,
Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort reached critical goals thanks to the
involvement of thousands of individuals and scores of organizations
across the state.
More than
6,000 cards
from state
residents were
delivered to
the Capitol
in March,
followed by
hearings in the
assembly and
senate.
More than 6,000 postcards – from residents in each and every
legislative district – were hand-delivered to state senators and
representatives in March.
The list of organizations endorsing background checks grew to more
than 80 groups.
For the first time ever, bills to require background checks on all gun
transactions were introduced in both houses of the legislature.
Hearings on the bills were held by assembly and senate committees
in April and were attended by many proponents, who gave compelling
testimony.
Thanks to all who played a role in putting this commonsense solution on the
agenda of policymakers in Madison.
Our progress was significant, and we’re already gearing up for the next
session because we won’t stop until we win!
No Background Check.
No Identification.
No Questions Asked.
No Wonder
There’s So Much
Gun Violence.
Outreach events and other
coalition-building activities
resulted in more than 80
organizations
endorsing
criminal
background
checks on all
gun sales.
Honoring Extraordinary Dedication
to Preventing Gun Violence
WAVE’s second Freedom from Gun Violence awards event on May 6 was a
lively evening of recognition for individuals and groups with extraordinary
dedication to preventing gun violence.

More than 100 supporters got together at Cuvée Champagne/Celebration
in Milwaukee for refreshments, awards presentations and a great set of
music by Paul Cebar. Artasia Gallery stayed open after hours for our guests.
WAVE supporters gave
a warm reception to the
award winners, including
Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett
(above) and Chief Doug Pettit
of the Wisconsin Chiefs of
Police Association (left).
