Terms
Rights & Obligations
The terms of the sale are cash or cheque unless
satisfactory arrangements have been made prior
to the sale. The right of property shall not pass
until after settlement is made. All settlements must
be made with the sale clerk before any cattle will
be released.
The above terms and conditions of the sale shall
constitute a contract between the buyer and the
seller and be equally binding to both. Resale of
animals following purchase in this sale constitute a
separate transaction and the rights and obligations
of the two parties connected therefore are not
covered by the terms and conditions of the sale.
Disputes
In case of disputes, bidding will be reopened
between the parties involved. If no further bid is
made the buyer will be the person from whom the
auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s
decision in such matters is final.
Purchaser’s Risk
Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser
as soon as sold. Animals will be cared for at the
purchaser’s risk for a reasonable length of time.
Announcements
Errors discovered in the catalogue will be corrected
by announcements from the auction stand at sale
time and such corrections will take precedence
over the printed matter in the catalogue.
Accidents
Although every precaution will be taken to protect
the safety and comfort of buyers, neither the
auctioneer or Soderglen assume any responsibility
in this matter and disclaim any liability, legal or
otherwise, in the event of accident or loss of
property.
Buyer Registration
We request that all prospective buyers attending
the sale register and receive a buyer number
before the sale.

The bulls will be sold in catalogue order.

the spring cowherd. Jared has
been learning the genetics as
well as the business side of
Soderglen and has most of
the marketing responsibilities
on the bull and female side
of Soderglen. Jared brings
to Soderglen new ideas and
enthusiasm for Soderglen’s
future combined with a solid
foundation in business and a
background in ranching.
New Sale Facility
Last year our sale took another step in efficiency and
convenience. We decided to leave the bulls in the
large spacious bull test pens and build a sale barn at
the Bull Test facility. This accomplishes two things,
firstly our customers want and need to look at the
cattle in the environment they can see feet, legs and
disposition and be able to compare them to one
another. Secondly it allows us to not have to move
and house these big bulls and all the stress that goes
with the set up in the main yard. We trust this proves
to be a positive addition for our customers.

Roger is the manager of
Soderglen South and has been
with us for six years. Roger
manages the summer calving
cows, which are approximately
1500. He is assisted by our
north staff in busy times
and our south neighbor Kay
Wynder.
Made in Uruguay, Ale has
continued to advance at
Soderglen in his six years with
us. In 2013 Ale will become
an integral part of our grain
production side with Kyle Fox.
They will be the backbone of
the grain division.
Wyatt has been working at
Soderglen for the past four years
and he has now joined us fulltime. He changed out his SASK
plates to Wildrose AB! Wyatt
has assumed responsibilities
for our feedlot herd health
management as well as AI.

Kyle has been here for a few
years working on the grain
and cattle side and is capable
and knowledgeable in both
sectors. He will focus this
year on grain production fulltime. Kyle, Kim and their 2
boys live in Crossfield, AB.

years working primarily on bull
test, cowherd and AI of both
purebred and commercial cows.
Ross joined our Soderglen South
team this year at Cardston, AB.
He helped calved 1400 cows,
weighing, tagging, and sorting
5 breeds at 40 calves per day.
He made it through the gruelling

All weights are taken at weaning and adjusted to
205 days to allow you to compare the bulls on an
even playing field.

All weights are taken at the end of test and adjusted
to 365 days, again to let you easily compare the
bulls.

... all weights at the end of test are used to
calculate the bull’s weight per day of age. It covers
the entire gaining period to date (on the cow and
on the feed).
A.D.G.
…after a 30 day warm-up period the bulls are put
on test to measure their A.D.G. for the next 90
days.
Actual Weight
Actual weights were taken in December, 2012.
Long Yearling S.C.
Actual scrotal measurements were taken in
October, 2012 by Veterinary Agri-Health. The bulls
were extended, palpated and semen tested. All
bulls meet industry standards based on breed and
age.
Horned-Scurred-Polled
Horned: An animal with a horn growth affixed
to the skull that has or has not been removed.
Scurred: An animal with rudimentary horn growth
that will not develop into a horn. Scurs are the
result of an independent gene unrelated to either
the horned or polled gene. Polled: An animal with
absence of horn growth. (An animal can have scurs
and still be genetically polled.)
Calving Ease
Calving ease is probably the biggest concern to
most bull buyers. Calving ease is most often related
to birth weight of a bull. This is partly true but there
are many other factors that influence calving ease.
Nutrition and gestation play a role. Our rating of
each bull is based on all the information we have
available.
•*** Should produce minimal calving problems
when bred to moderate sized first calf heifers.
•** Recommended for use on second calvers or
small framed cows – 1100 to 1300 lbs.
•* Recommended for mature cows - 1400+ lbs.
Disposition Scoring System
1. Wider flight zone-moves off pressure easily,
easily excited.
2. Average disposition-handles easily if worked
quietly.
3. Can work very easily, doesn’t get excited.
4. Won’t get out of your way, narrow or no flight
zone.
Ultrasound Evaluation of Carcass Traits
Ultrasound data was taken at 14 months of age.
Ribeye Area (IN2) - gives an indication of overall
carcass muscling.
Fat Depth (MM) - gives an indication of overall
carcass fat content.
LeanMeat Yield % (LMY) - gives the percentage
of lean meat in a carcass.
Marbling Score - gives an indication of the
juiciness and eating quality of beef - AAA, AA, A.

oderglen’s Warranty Program offers a cut rate
warranty in a language you can understand.
Soderglen will warranty your bull and carry all
risk. In our opinion, using only Mortality Insurance
is money out the window with little or no value
because 96% of bull problems are injury, not
death.
We have the ability to make cash settlement or
service your needs with another bull, whichever
you choose. Should you have any problem with
a bull, contact Soderglen at (403) 948-6734 and
we will handle the problem immediately. Your
veterinarian and yourself will fill out a
claim form provided by Soderglen and
that is all that is needed to take care
of your claim.
It’s unfortunate but sometimes bulls
will become injured prior to or during
their first breeding season and often these
injuries are life threatening. In an effort to better
serve our customers we are offering an optional
warranty on all bulls sold through this sale. This
warranty will cover loss of use from injuries as
well as death.

Warranty covers the bull through his first
breeding season. It starts on sale day
and will last for eight months.
The cost of this extended warranty is 7.5%
of the bulls purchase price. The coverage is
completely optional and you can take it or leave it.
Exclusions to Policy
Injury or death due to malicious, willful or intentional
acts or mistreatment by you or your employees

uyer pays the bid price and has possession of the bull for the spring/summer breeding season and
throughout the year except when Soderglen exercises their right to use the bull for their fall breeding
program in September and October of each year.
Soderglen, at their option, may pick up the bull and use him for their summer calving program. They may
also place the bull in a stud unit and collect semen. Any semen sold on the bull will be split 50/50 with his
owners.
Soderglen will take full responsibility for all expenses and assume all risk, re: death or injury while they
have possession of the bull. When Soderglen exercises their possession rights, they will offer to maintain
the bull at their expense until the following spring and then deliver the bull back to the buyer. In the event
of injury or death while under Soderglen’s care, the owner will receive full purchase price. For that reason
Soderglen suggests you cover your bull while in your possession. The buyer receives 100% of the salvage
value of the bull.
Semen Rights
Please note: On a few designated bulls we retain the right to collect, use and market semen at some future
date. As purchaser of the bull you will receive a 25 percent revenue-sharing semen interest, along with
full possession of the bull. Semen will be collected at your convenience and at our expense during the off
season. This in no way affects your use of the bull! In the event semen is marketed and revenue is produced
the resulting proceeds, minus incurred expenses, shall be divided among those who own a semen interest.

Soderglen Herdsire Purchase Program
Soderglen is offering a Financing Option for our
customers. This program is designed to assist with
financing bulls.
On sale day, at the settlement desk, 50% of the
value of your purchase will be asked for plus
warranty and we will finance the remaining 50%
for eight months. The interest component will be
floating prime plus 1%.
Give Elan a call, she will be happy to help you with
your financing of a Soderglen Herdsire.
Bring a Neighbor Program
If you bring a new customer to the sale and they
purchase a bull we will give you $500 off your
purchase (just let us know at the sale desk)!
Visa/Mastercard/Debit/Cheque
Soderglen is accepting Visa/Mastercard payments
as well as debit cards for your bulls. Soderglen
pays the merchant fee.
Bidding
Soderglen Ranches Ltd. reserves the right to
refuse any bids, live or on internet for any reason
whatsoever. We can also refuse the delivery of any
animal(s), in which case the purchase price will be
reimbursed to the buyer in full.

We here at Soderglen have spent 25 years in the
bull business and have learned to become very
dynamic and responsive in this ever changing
cow industry. We understand the needs of our
customers change over time, therefore we do.
Whether you are a customer needing bulls with
exceptional calving ease, looking for performance
packed Hybrids or quality grade characteristics
with a disposition you can trust, you will find them
all here at Soderglen. Here are some things we can
proudly say we deliver on and that you can trust:
1. We understand the need for cattle that calve
as we require the same here. Soderglen calved
1500 cows and 350 first calf heifers last year
with no veterinarian visits at all! We know these
genetics will calve regardless of breed. All bulls
born with birth weights 110 lbs and greater are
castrated at birth. Year after year we castrate
less of these simply because their existence is
fading in our program.
2. Disposition is becoming more important in our
business and we know that it is a huge priority
to many customers.We have culled hard for
years at Soderglen getting the temperaments
more predictable.We have scored each and
every bull for you and the scores are printed in
the catalogue. PLEASE USE THESE, as they
are a great tool in selecting your next herd sire.
3. Longevity. The longer the bull is in your program
the cheaper he becomes.We believe culling is
the most important way to manage this trait.
We have culled the 2012 sale bull offering very
hard and therefore guarantee each and every
bull sold!
4. We have worked with Nutrition Services for
years now on developing these long yearling
and two year old bulls for optimal growth with
a target testing period gain of 3 lbs. per day.
For the remainder of the bulls’ life at Soderglen
they are fed a high roughage low energy ration
that maintains them at 2 lbs. per day.We can
see the difference and so can our customers
in the amount of foot problems we don’t have!

As a seedstock producer we are responding to the demand for Simmental cattle that maintain superior
maternal and fertility traits. We strive to produce a line of Red and Black Simmental cattle loaded with
longevity and convenience traits such as polling, calving ease, correct foot and leg structure and balanced
pigmented udders. We are attempting to produce a line of Simmental cattle to fit our customers needs
in the medium to large cow calf operations of the Southern Central Prairie Provinces and BC. Simmental
cattle have a unique combination of maternal traits as well as performance and carcass quality. Produced
with common sense management practices, Simmental is a breed that is well suited for a large part of our
existing customer base.

I Survived!
My curfew was the streetlights and my mom didn’t

ur South operation includes separate
ranches — the Fort McLeod operation is
now a summer ranch with cattle moved between
Cardston to Fort McLeod for the summer. Cardston is the base for wintering and calving and
is managed by Roger Gerard and it maintains a
cowherd of 1500 mother
cows of 5 seedstock lines. Ross, Scott and Elan as
well as staff from Airdrie
help Roger during the busy
months of calving and
weaning. The cowherd winters on
native Foothills Fescue and
then goes to bale grazing
till May when calving starts. All calves go to Airdrie in the
fall and heifers are bred in
Airdrie and sent down in the
fall.

Chelan, Scott & Wade Chester pulling bulls Thanksgiving
weekend
All breeds of cattle, whether they are Angus,
Charolais or Simmental are treated exactly the
same. The young cattle are separate as first
calvers and then run as one herd. They are
separated by breed at branding and sorted to
breeding pastures. These cows are treated no
different than our customer’s cattle, as there is not
a bushel of grain on the operation. Horses don’t
ever get oats unless Roger gets a bag in town!

Our MAX line is a leader in the industry of Hybrid Genetics. We chose Angus as our base breed because it is
the most predictable and consistent producer of mainstream maternal genetics. We selected Simmental as
the complementary breed for our MAX line and our first goal was to find solid red and black color, structure
with ample performance and carcass merit. The result is Soderglen’s MAX line for F1 and composite hybrid
genetics. These MAX and composite bulls give the commercial cattleman a power-backed performance
and maternal sire loaded with convenience traits.

acres under cultivation we produce all our
requirements for silage and feed and with
luck on the good years a little extra cash
crop. Our grain crew is an integral part of
Soderglen ranches. Alejandro, Kyle and
Dan are the backbone of the grain division.

Red and Black Angus are the foundation of Soderglen’s Program. They represent the largest numbers
of mother cows by breed as well as in quality. It is the base breed for our MAX cattle as well as our new
line of CCM cattle. We can attribute our success to disciplined breeding strategies using proven AI sires
generation after generation. Great cowherds are created by culling and we cull more cows per year than
most of our competitors own. Disposition, udders, feet, fertility, maternal performance and calving ease
are ruthlessly evaluated yearly.

depth and quality that we needed to expand our Charolais cow herd. We have not seen this quality or
demand for Charolais genetics in the last 10 years. We know this breed is again ready to expand and

As a seedstock producer we are responding to the demand for Simmental cattle that maintain superior
maternal and fertility traits. We strive to produce a line of Red and Black Simmental cattle loaded with
longevity and convenience traits such as polling, calving ease, correct foot and leg structure and balanced
pigmented udders. We are attempting to produce a line of Simmental cattle to fit our customers needs
in the medium to large cow calf operations of the Southern Central Prairie Provinces and BC. Simmental
cattle have a unique combination of maternal traits as well as performance and carcass quality. Produced
with common sense management practices, Simmental is a breed that is well suited for a large part of our
existing customer base.

Our Black Max program is genetically engineered to be predictable in all aspects of production from calving
ease and BW, to polling power and colour pattern. A common question asked is, “Can we use these bulls
on black or black baldy cows and not get smoky calves?” The answer is yes. We guarantee it. Should you
get a smoky calf from a black, black Hereford cross or Hereford cow, we will purchase the calf from you
at top steer price. The Black MAX genetic selection is three generations polled, solid colours, non spotter
and non diluted. Approximately 75% of the sale bulls are homozygous in these traits and we only use
Simmental bulls that have high probability of being homozygous. For these reasons, these MAX cattle are
more predictable for these traits than our purebed lines.

established in 1993 by Dr. Michael Jelinski, who had a vision of creating a health management oriented
veterinary practice to provide high quality professional services to beef producers. Today, our business has
grown into a vibrant food animal practice, servicing bovine clients across Western Canada. As the needs
of the cattle industry have evolved so has the practice and now in addition to the delivery of herd health
programs to feedlot and cow/calf operations, we are active in research projects with a number of academic,

FEMALE PROGRAM
T
he top cut selected from 1400 females will sell
this spring and fall. We have 350 Black, 350
Black Baldies and 350 Red, and 350 Red Baldies
for sale. These heifers were bought from some of
the top herds in Western Canada as heifer calves
and we have developed them at Soderglen. You
will not find a better combination of genetics for
commercial cows excelling in fertility, calving ease
and convenience traits than these heifers. This is a
quality-controlled sale. All cattle must meet strict
requirements to be eligible and we require that the
heifers be a minimum of 800 lbs. All heifers will be
palpated and weighed. The heifers are pre-sorted
according to breed, weight, and color. The heifers
are on the Express vaccination Program.
Call us for more information. We will help organize
the loads; however, the cost of delivery for the
heifers is the buyer’s responsibility.

producers that are excelling in cow/calf
production. Soderglen will award a $1,000 herdbull
credit in our Select 2013 bull sale and $1,500 if
the steers are sired by Soderglen herdbulls. The
criterion to be met is the pen must have 20+ head
and the pen that grosses the most dollars per
head is the winning pen.

BIO ABC’s are used to evaluate animals of different breeds. They are calculated
using data from all breeds, allowing a common system to compare the benefits not only within a breed,
but between breeds and composite cattle. ABC’s give a common baseline for all animals to be evaluated
equally. BIO has generated all EPD’s in this catalogue.

What is GE & BIO ABC?
What is Genetic Evaluation?
An animal’s observed performance for a trait
is known as a phenotype. The phenotype (or
performance) is influenced by the environment
the animal is subjected to or raised in, as well as
the genetic contribution of the animal’s parents
(dam and sire).
Phenotype = Genotype + Environment
Genetic evaluation attempts to determine and
remove the environmental influence, so genetic
potential of the animal can be estimated. It’s
impossible to determine the environmental
influence versus the genetic influence on the
performance of one animal. Multiple animals
living in the same environment are required to
determine the common environmental influence
on performance.
How is Genetic Evaluation Reported?
There are many ways that genetic evaluation
can be reported, and many ways that genetic
potential can be expressed. Breeding values
are estimated through genetic evaluation. The
estimated breeding value (EBV) is the animal’s
genotypic value that is transmittable to offspring,
or the genetic potential that is heritable. The
estimated progeny difference (EPD) is half of the
estimated breeding value. Estimated Progeny
Differences (EPD) are selection tools that provide
estimates of the genetic value of an animal as a
parent. When comparing two animals of the same
breed, the difference between their EPD predicts
the difference in average performance of their
respective offspring.
How does BIO report Genetic Evaluations?
To compare animals of different breeds, or
crossbred animals with multiple breeds in their
pedigree, producers can use Across Breed
Comparisons (ABCs). ABCs are breed-adjusted
EPDs. With ABCs, one breed can be compared
to another, a purebred can be compared to
percentage cattle and percentage cattle can be
compared, regardless of their breed composition.
ABCs are calculated from performance data and
pedigrees. Performance data includes weights and
measures gathered while on test with BIO, as well
as herd information collected from the producer.
Pedigree includes parents, grandparents, siblings
and offspring.
Using ABCs in a Breeding Program:
BIO ABCs are calculated using a fixed base, which
is the starting point for comparing animals. The
fixed base is as follows:

For each trait, you can consider the fixed base
the average performance. For example, calving
ease is the likelihood of requiring assistance at
calving for first calf heifers. A positive ABC for
calving ease means the calf is less likely to require
assistance at calving, while a negative number
means the calf is more likely to require assistance.
To make using ABCs easier, BIO calculates
percentile ranking for all traits. With percentile
rankings, 100 is the best possible rank. For an
animal that ranks 95 for a trait, they are in the
top 5% for that trait. Rankings are calculated
across all breeds, and calculated within breed for
purebred animals. Rankings are also calculated
for the BIO$ Index.

P
rofessionally balanced diets that provide the
optimal amounts of protein, energy, minerals &
vitamins are the foundation of any cattle nutrition
program. At Soderglen Ranches, these diets are
implemented in combination with intensive animal,
feedstuff & bunk management protocols to develop
an elite feeding regime that ultimately enhance the
reproductive soundness & genetic potential for
growth of every animal that carries the ♦S brand.
Soderglen stringently applies these aspects of
feeding management on a day-in, day-out basis to
insure that nothing is left to chance when it comes
to the nutritional development of their Seedstock.
Reproductive soundness is highly correlated to
the nutritional regime used in bull development
programs. Feeding rations that are too high or too
low in energy may both equally impair semen quality,
albeit for different reasons. Bulls fed to obtain
maximum average daily gain while on test usually
result in a high degree of body condition. Bulls fed
in this manner are susceptible to producing lower
quality semen and may also have reduced libido
& serving capacity. Alternatively, under-nourished
bulls may lack the sexual maturity required at the
inception of breeding season, as well as result in
large reductions in body condition which could
also impair serving capacity. Matching bulls with
a moderate energy ration with an optimum ratio of
concentrate to forage will allow for development
of structural soundness, sexual maturity, and the
appropriate body condition for breeding season.
Meeting the nutritional needs to allow for proper
overall bull growth and reproductive development
is a complex process and is an integral part of
making your future breeding bull selections. A
crucial facet of bull development is providing the
appropriate minerals and vitamins. A few of the
most important trace minerals are zinc, copper,
and manganese, along with vitamins A, D, & E
which are key factors in overall animal growth,
semen production, fertility, & hoof integrity. The
appropriate concentrations of these minerals and
in the correct ratios are thought to be as important
as other nutrients for proper development, with a
large proportion coming from chelated minerals.
