History
Dramatic Coastal Landscapes
The Left Bank Art Gallery on St. Simons
Island, Georgia was founded in the 1950’s by the
late impressionist artist Mildred Nix Huie to highlight Dramatic Coastal Landscapes. Her daughter,
Mildred Huie Wilcox and son-in-law Robert
Goodall Wilcox became the new owners in 1967
at which time they expanded the concept to include national and international artists with an
emphasis on French Impressionists.
Today the Left Bank Art Gallery represents some of the finest landscape painters in the
Southeastern United States. Most of the landscapes, beachscapes, seascapes and marshscapes
that enhance the walls of the gallery have been
uniquely created by artists who have made the
Golden Isles their home.

House has served
as a house
museum welcoming art and history
enthusiasts from
around the world.

of Monet artworks. Huie’s original works and
extended collection are on permanent display at
the historic Mediterranean house, built in 1929.

The French Connection
Millie Wilcox carries on the tradition
today, visiting the French
artists in their studios all over
France, to select work for the
gallery. She also
accompanies individuals or
small groups to France to
assist in the selection and
purchase of paintings directly
from the artists’ ateliers.
