Making Our Love and Mission Visible
What is the purpose of your face?” Oh, a misfit alien from another planet, asks Tip
during the movie “Home”. The Elementary Youth Group hosted a family movie night
on October 9th. Find out more about the movie night on page 3.
It was time for the parents in our church to go back to school, church school that
is. Read more about Family Sunday and Wednesday School on page 3.
Three men and two telescopes under the starry sky. We had great hopes after viewing
the delicate and beautiful Andromeda Galaxy in September. Now we turned our gaze to
the south to Aquarius. Turn to page 7 for the rest of the story.
Your giving has brought joy to people and helped to make our church home into a place
of hospitality. The pot holes are gone from the parking lot and next summer the
parking lot will be sealed. Children and adults gather on Wednesday evenings for a
tasty supper together. Whole groups of people gather and the music of laughter is
heard. November 22 is Consecration Sunday. Turn to page 4 for the rest of the story.
What was that large semi-truck trailer doing on the north parking lot October 22-23?
Turn to page 5 for this story.
After four years of Confirmation classes, study, worship and growing together the
10th grade confirmation class were each asked the question: What does faith mean to
me? Continued on page 3.

The month of October flew by and
now we are already in November!!
Thanksgiving and Christmas will be
here before we know it! The kids got
to go to the fire station this month.
We learned all about fire safety and
what to do if there is a fire. They
learned so much and had a ton of
fun! We spent the month of October
learning about the season Fall,
safety, apples, and Halloween. Our
Halloween party will be the last week
in October. The children are already
talking about their costumes and
can’t wait!
placed in the containers
located on the table in the
Narthex. We really
appreciate it!!
Please come watch us sing on
Sunday, November 8th at the
10:45am service. We will be
opening the service with a
couple of songs that all three
classes have been working on!
We will also be having egg
bake, coffee, and juice
between services.

Family Sunday & Wednesday School
The school year is in full swing and we are proud to announce that the first Family
Sunday and Wednesday school is complete! Students and parents got together on
Sunday, October 11 and Wednesday, October 14th to make a thumbprint family tree
and perform a science experiment focusing on God’s creations of water and the
sky. The next Family Sunday and Wednesday School will be November 15 th and
18th. Also mark your calendars for our Christmas program on December 20 th.
A Night at the Movies
Hot popcorn, cheesy pizza, a funny movie and a room filled with laughter. This
was the scene in the youth room on Friday, October 9th when the Elementary
Youth Group hosted the first family night. Seventeen people, including youth
members, their family and friends, gathered to watch the movie “Home”. Join
the Elementary Youth Group when they watch the movie “Inside Out” on
Friday, November 20th from 6pm - 8pm.
Affirmation of Baptism
Each of our twenty-one 10th grade Confirmands answered
this question in many different ways. Their faith projects
ranged from crosses with pictures of people who have
influenced their faith, to crosses made out of wood and
pistons, to paintings visually describing their faith to Power
Point presentations with their favorite Bible verses. Each one
of these youth put in to words what God means to them and
how faith is a part of their daily lives. It always is amazing to
see these projects and to hear the words from the students
themselves. The question always is though what happens
after Confirmation? Confirmation is not a graduation from
church it is actually a step into a greater opportunity to be
active in the church. So what is next for our Confirmands?
We have a High School Youth Group which meets regularly
on Sunday nights from 6:30-9:00. We are also preparing for a
summer mission trip to Minneapolis, Minnesota with Youth
Works. Join us as we continue to ask tough questions and
seek to grow in our faith together.

Consecration Sunday is Coming
Congregations that approach financial stewardship from a biblical perspective do
not view the money Christians give to their church merely as a way to pay its bills.
Rather, such congregations see financial contributions as a way to help people grow
spiritually in their relationship with God by supporting their church’s mission and
ministry with a percentage of their incomes.
Our congregation’s Stewardship committee has selected the New Consecration
Sunday Stewardship Program as a way to teach the biblical and spiritual principles of generous giving in our
stewardship education emphasis this year.
New Consecration Sunday is based on the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his or her
own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the church to receive. We will approach people like
followers of Jesus Christ who want to give unselfishly as an act of discipleship. New Consecration Sunday
encourages people toward proportionate and systematic giving in response to the question, “What percentage of my income is God calling me to give?”
During morning worship on Consecration Sunday, we are asking our attendees and members to make their
financial commitments to our church’s missionary, benevolent, and educational ministries in this community
and around the world.
We will do no home solicitation to ask people to complete cards. During morning worship we will conduct a
brief period of instruction and inspiration, climaxed by members making their commitments as a confidential
act of worship.
We will encourage participation in Consecration Sunday events through the Consecration Sunday team and
governing board members. Since we will make no follow-up visits to ask people to complete their cards, we
will make every effort to inform, inspire, and commit everyone to attend Consecration Sunday worship on
Sunday, November 22 with two services and the Celebration Lunch will follow the second service at
11:30 am.
Thanks in advance for your enthusiastic participation in Consecration Sunday events.
Stewardship Board Chairperson,
Gene Morsching
Pies Needed
Join us for a Pie Social after the Thanksgiving Eve Service
on November 25th!
This is a great opportunity to come
together for fellowship and thanking God
for all the blessings he has given to us
in this season of Thanksgiving.
Hope to see you there!
Thank you…
The Evangelism Board would like to say a big THANK
YOU to the following for helping with the float for the
Gypsy Day parade:
Jack Hollinsworth and Elliott Quam for helping with
construction; Leo Haar for use of the trailer; Curt
Eisenbeisz for use of his sound equipment; Paul
Wallien for use of his generator; Duane and Phyllis
Donat for driving; Sue Klabo for helping distribute
candy; Gary Klabo, Simon, Sydna, Mari, Gretta and Tate
Odland and Anna Ahlberg for walking and handing out
candy; to those who donated candy or monies towards
the purchase of candy; and to Pastor Tim and Pastor Liz
for their guidance and support!
We wouldn’t have had a float without you! This year’s
theme was Cruzing through the Decades and we chose
the 1960’s because that is when Good Shepherd
Lutheran Church was founded. Isn’t that GROOVY?
The Evangelism Board would like say a big THANK YOU
all the people who have prepared and helped with
Food Pantry meals over the years. We would
especially like to thank the following:
Rod and Jan Thurn for preparing and helping with
another delicious beef stew meal in September.
Phyllis Donat for preparing and helping with many
meals.
Duane Donat for helping with many meals.
Roy Burt for consistently show up and washing
dishes, as well as pot and pans and roasters.
Pastor Tim and Pastor Liz for their support and
taking time to say a meal prayer each time.
Page 5
Financial Opportunity and Challenge
We have big dreams to care for the people in our
church, in our community and beyond. We gather to be
sent out to serve. Meeting our goals this summer and
fall hasn’t been easy. In fact we’ve had to borrow money
from one fund to pay another and the time is coming to
pay that money back. Working through each of us God is
faithful.
November 22 is Consecration Sunday. We will present
our “intent of giving cards” on that day and enjoy a
celebration meal together after each service. By the end
of the meal following the second service we plan to
announce the totals for the coming year. Pastor Galen
Sylvester from Frederick/Ellendale will be our guest
preacher.
The Quilting Group
People from 19 area churches gathered to load boxes
of quilts into a semi-truck trailer. They were hauled
away to Lutheran World Relief. The quilts will be
distributed in places of need around the world. This is
a gift of warmth and love. Our quilting group made
544 total quilts this year. There were 329 large quilts,
136 children’s and twin sized bed quilts, and 79 lap
robes. 290 large quilts went to Lutheran World Relief.
Additional quilts were used for baptisms at Good
Shepherd, nursing homes, hospitals, the Salvation
Army, Head Start, Roncalli to be taken to Pine Ridge,
Safe Harbor, local people in need, and more.
What comes next? Another year of love and quilt
making. The quilters are people of hospitality. Find
out what they are about on Thursday mornings
between 9:00 and 3:00. They welcome all who come
at 10:00am and share coffee and goodies with a good
amount of friendly visiting. You are welcomed here.

WELCA NEWS
Our annual meeting took place in the Conference Room on Sunday, October 4th at 9:40am. Our gifts to
Missions for this year were discussed. Since there were no nominations from the floor, a motion was
made by Peggy Serfoss, seconded by Arly Schnable to remove term limits from our WELCA Constitution
and By Laws. This was unanimously approved. Officers from the past 4 years will serve another 2 year
term: President Sharon Bossert, Vice President Charlotte Kraemer, Sec/Treasurer Ann Langbehn, Missions
Dorothy Bogue. Some discussion followed about fund raising and Quilts and Kits. Coordinators were reminded to get their information to Sharon by November 10th for the WELCA Yearbook. Meeting was adjourned at 10:30am.
Mary Circle will be starting a different style of Bible Study for 2016. The theme will be "Women of the Bible" OR "How to Drive the Story from the Back Seat!" There will be a sneak preview at our November 2nd
meeting at 9:30am in the Conference Room. I hope we will all continue to subscribe to GATHER magazine
for the wonderful, thoughtful articles.
WELCA annually buys 4 subscriptions to GATHER magazine for women who are not presently participating
in a Circle or Study group. They are in the card rack for you to look over/take home. Try it, you will find
some interesting stories and maybe you'd like to join a group! All Women's groups at Good Shepherd are
welcoming...just come (you do not have to be a member of Good Shepherd to participate). The annual
WELCA Yearbook is always available in the church office when there are no copies on the card rack. Just
ask for a copy! New books should be finished by early December for 2016.
In His Service,
Sharon Bossert, WELCA President
Astronomy Small Group
I, Pastor Tim, set up the telescope on the side of the road. I was excited to try a part of the
sky that I hadn’t spent a lot of time in before. The guidebook said that Fomalhaut, the
brightest star in the sky was easy to spot because it was the only bright star in the area.
It’s so isolated that it’s nicknamed the solitary one. The wind that night had whipped up so
much dust that several stars looked like possible candidates. I picked one. We looked at it.
Then I made the sweep up to a pretty spiral galaxy from which I would move to the
spectacular Helix Nebula. I found nothing on both counts. I was lost in space. But we did have close up
views of the surface of the moon and spent some time gazing at the Sea of Serenity. We followed this up
with a look at the sparkling Seven Sisters, also known as the Pleiades. The night sky is a space to lose
oneself in, feel the grandeur of God, and respond with gratitude at being able to see such sights. Why not
join us in November? Just come to the church at 8:00pm on Friday, November 13. In case of cloudy or
inclement weather we will go out on Sunday night, November 15.
