Agnieszka Odorowicz
General Director of the Polish Film Institute

Ladies and Gentlemen,
allow me to present this year’s edition of the New Polish Films catalogue, published annually by the
Polish Film Institute to announce the upcoming season in Polish cinema. On the following pages, we
present a selection of feature films — some of which are likely to screen in competition or other
prestigious sections at international film festivals.
2014 was a particularly good year for Polish cinema. Domestic films brought almost 11 million theatrical
admissions. Łukasz Palkowski’s Bogowie (Gods), Jan Komasa’s Miasto 44 (Warsaw 44) and Władysław
Pasikowski’s Jack Strong were universally regarded as films that were important, high in artistic quality,
and exceptionally well made. I am glad that after ten years of Polish Film Institute activity, the visibility
of Polish cinema on the international stage has increased greatly. Paweł Pawlikowski’s Ida was a film
that moved us and made us proud by winning acclaim around the world, with the crowning glory of a
total of five European Film Awards.
Contemporary Polish cinema is diverse and increasingly bold. Filmmakers today understand the needs
of the audience; they are also more keen to turn to genre-based films. 2015 will bring a number of films
by first- and second-time directors, who will surely further enrich the image of Polish cinema.
It is my hope that the New Polish Films catalogue will allow you to discover something intriguing,
surprising, and inspiring about Polish cinema today.

65-year-old Lulek, a hit-man working for the mafia, is released from prison on parole. The prosecutor who locked him up a few
years earlier now offers him a job and provides him with a sniper’s rifle. Lulek’s mission is to take out the head of the Central
Investigation Bureau (CBŚ). But his bad eyesight makes the job impossible. Lulek cannot refuse the prosecutor’s offer, because
that would put him straight back in jail. He decides to impersonate a counterintelligence officer and hire Stasiek, a military
sniper convicted by the military courts to be demoted and dishonourably discharged from the army for accidentally shooting
civilians during his tour in Afghanistan.

Bangistan is a whip smart and uproarious satire on fundamentalism and the story of two unlikely terrorists, the antitheses of each
other, with a common destructive goal.
The gullible terrorists arrive in Krakow. A series of serendipitous comic events ends in an epic, dramatic finale that brings the world
to the Polish town and covers a range of breathless emotions, while sending across a universally affirmative message.

The story of eleven-year-old Łukasz whose mother is in a coma as a result of the injuries she suffered in a car accident. The boy goes
to live in foster care at a seaside resort with an aunt he never met. Łukasz misses his mother and finds it difficult to adapt to the new
circumstances. Feeling lonely, he desperately wants to get away from the place where he doesn’t feel at home. He accidentally
discovers that the blue door in the building leads to a fairy tale world; a world that at first appears very friendly but, as Łukasz will
soon learn, is so only until a certain point.

A father-and-son journey down a mountain river creates the premise for this taciturn story. A poetic tale about the exceptional
moments in the life of a ten-year-old, whose curiosity and craving for new experiences is stronger than the fear of the unknown
world. The overwhelming nature, dominated by the image of the flowing river, creates a feeling of increasing, if hard to justify,
tension. When the danger becomes real, the boy seems to be ready for it; but after this experience, nothing will ever be the same.

Chemo is inspired by the true story of Magdalena Prokopowicz, founder of the Rak’n’Roll foundation.
30-year-old Benek is suffering from an existential crisis that mostly manifests itself in suicidal thoughts. One day, he meets Lena -a beautiful and very talkative young woman. He is mesmerized from the start; his fascination grows further when he realizes that
Lena not only accepts his suicidal thoughts, but appears to share them.
They set off on a wild journey, during which Benek learns that there is someone else in Lena’s life. She has stage 3 cancer, which she
has no intention of treating. Benek’s admiration is mixed with fear; he promises to stay with Lena until the very end.

An attempt at depicting the life of a generation born and raised in communist Poland; a generation that lived through all stages
of that system and made it to democracy.
Throughout his life, the film’s protagonist has always tried to be active, but something always got in his way, either through
an absurd coincidence, as a result of his own lack of ability, or due to the unpredictable nature of certain events in our recent history.

Marta is a sculptor; she has a loving husband and her own flat and studio. But the years spent under her mother’s roof and their
extremely close relationship make it impossible for her to live an independent life.
The incessant phone calls: “Marta, sweetheart, pick up – it’s Mum!” prevent her from being able to feel truly free.
A drama about the power of family ties.

Ten-year-old Janis is a pioneer, living on a collective farm (kolkhoz) called ‘Dawn’ in what is now Latvia. His father, an opponent of
the kolkhoz system (and Soviet rule in general), plans to burn down the kolkhoz head office. Little Janis betrays his father by
turning him in to the police. The father kills Janis in revenge. Who is good and who is evil in this Soviet parable?
The film is based on a Soviet propaganda story; young pioneer Pavlik Morozov denounced his father to the secret police and was
later murdered by his family in revenge. Morozov’s life was supposed to serve as an inspiration for all the ‘righteous’ citizens of
the Soviet Union.

Sandomierz is shaken by a gruesome crime -- the body of a murdered woman, a well-liked local social activist, is found. The way she
was murdered is reminiscent of human sacrifice. Prosecutor Teodor Szacki takes on the case, but it proves to be more difficult than
he expected. The town residents’ reluctance to cooperate, their growing hysteria, and the media hype surrounding the case are only
the beginning; Szacki will soon discover secrets from sixty years before, and prove that not every legend contains a grain of truth.

A heart-warming and humourous road movie. A fairy tale about a meeting between two women – one an adult, the other
a child – who long for love. The film tells the story of Maszenka who wants to be a ballet dancer. While escaping from
the orphanage where she lives, the girl kidnaps a newly-employed counsellor named Cordula (which stands for ‘heart’).
Together they travel across the country to arrive just in time for the entrance exams to the ballet school in a faraway city. With
the police on their trail, they avoid main roads and encounter a number of interesting characters who help the girl in pursuing
her passion, proving that dreams not only can come true, but above all they can change anyone’s life for the better.

Steeped in wonder and mystery, InfluenZ is the story of a group of clairvoyants committed to restoring the nonextant Polish state
as World War One dwindles to an end. Gathered inside a hotel room for a special seance, the magi use their power to save Jan
Paderewski, legendary pianist and symbolic leader of a successful patriotic uprising. At the same time, a hostile medium hired by
the Prussian army tries to influence Paderewski with his negative powers. The eerily whirring table becomes the center of
an unfolding melodrama, fostering the birth of a love that will demand the highest sacrifice of all.

A comedy about serious issues, with a fresh and funny vibe. Vasek is a shy man in his early thirties. Seduced by a Redhead Beauty, he
steals a painting from the National Gallery in Prague and then travels in disguise to “The Eternal City” by train. Hunted by Czech
antique shop owners and a police commissioner, he comes across a number of extraordinary characters on his way; they share their
stories about searching for happiness, fortune and enlightenment. But is it possible for anyone to actually achieve anything these
days at all?
A wild comedy that also works as an ironic metaphor about the search for values in modern-day Europe.

works.
Loving Vincent is the world’s first feature painted animation. It is the story of the life and controversy surrounding the death of
Vincent van Gogh, told by the characters in his portraits. A devised plot allows for the mystery surrounding the death of this artist,

A story full of punk energy, based on the life of one of the most original and interesting contemporary artists – performer Oskar
Dawicki (playing himself). As in Dawicki’s other works, the established norms of moral, spiritual and social order are challenged and
put on trial. The combination of fact and fiction gives surprising insight into the modern art world. The Perfomer presents a mix of
performance art with the art of acting, and combines documentary filmmaking with a fictional narrative; Oscar Dawicki’s works are
linked together on screen not only by time and space, but also by narrative, drama and emotions.

A man arrives in the city of Łódź and, in this sad place, he tells a different story to each person he meets: before becoming a sailor, he
used to climb the Himalayas, dance the tango in Argentina, study gastronomy in France and Kung Fu at the ShaoLin monastery, and
now he is a private detective, tracking a serial killer. But the truth is that he is making up all these stories, as he can’t remember his
true identity. When the police finds the body of a dead girl in a barrel, just like in one of the sailor’s stories, he too will need to find his
way out of a tight spot.

A behind the scenes look at the life and work of secret service agents. When an elite military intelligence unit is shut down,
the politicians come to realize that Poland has been deprived of its eyes and ears. A new secret service unit is created. Among its
recruits is an insubordinate second lieutenant who had been fired from the Internal Security Agency, a captain who recently
returned from his tour in Afghanistan, and a former colonel of the communist secret police. As they work on scandals that make
front-page news, they are forced to face the demons of their past. One day they will discover that they don’t really know who they’re
working for.

the members of the community use a language Walser doesn’t know, they eventually establish a bond of common understanding.
Walser quickly realizes that this community is not affected by the infertility plague; there are children of different ages hanging out
in the settlement. After a while, Walser learns the basics of the Contehili language and is able to explain that they have the power to
save mankind from extinction.

NEW POLISH FILMS 2015 FEATURES
Warsaw 44 is a story of young Varsovians full of life
and passion. They live their lives as if each day was to
be their last. It’s not, however, due to their bravado or
recklessness – this attitude is a natural thing
considering the reality they face. We get to know
the movie’s main characters (Stefan, Biedronka and
Kama) shortly before the Uprising breaks out in
summer 1944. Young Poles see their involvement in
the underground movement not only as a patriotic
duty, but also as an adventure, an opportunity to brag
to their peers and impress girls. They witness sacrifice
and heroism, but also cruelty, betrayal and murder.
They learn about love and discover what hate feels
like. History teaches them a bloody and brutal lesson
in growing up.
Director and screenwriter.
Born in 1981. Graduate
of the Lodz Film School.

As she comes of age, Kasia finds herself at a moment in life when she needs to make a number of key decisions. At first, her situation
appears hopeless; everyone around her is dragging her down. But with her moral instincts and good intuition about good and evil,
she will manage to attempt to change her fate, despite her young age.
