Lesson -11
In the Service of the Nation
1. Tell the names of some freedom fighters.
2. Who gave the slogan ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan?
Lal Bahadur Shastri, commonly called 'Babuji'
within his family, was known for his simplicity,
honesty, determination and patriotism. Many
events of his life show his patriotism.
Freedom struggle was at its peak. Babuji was in
jail. The news of his daughter’s illness worried
him. The British government decided to release
him on parole but he refused. His daughter was
desperate to see 'Babuji'. But Babuji was in the
service of the nation. His country was dearer to him than his daughter.
Babuji was again in jail for participating in the freedom struggle.
This time his son fell ill. The Britishers knew he would never request for
his release from the jail. They released him on parole. When the parole
ended, his son was still very ill. His body temperature rose to 106 degree.
The Britishers asked him to choose: either leave freedom struggle and
look after your son or be jailed. Babuji kissed his son's forehead and
opted to go to jail. The son wept and insisted on Babuji staying with him.
But Babuji was in the service of the nation. Tears rolled down Babuji's
cheeks again for a long time. The fate wasn't so harsh this time. Babuji's
son recovered from his illness.
Lal Bahadur Shastri became the Prime Minister of India in 1964.
He gave a befitting reply to Pakistan's invasion of India in 1965. His
slogan 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan' worked wonders during the war.
Lal Bahadur Shastri died on 11th January 1966 at Tashkand. He
was awarded ‘Bharat-Ratna’ in 1966 after his death.
