As in everything, it’s essential to know as much
as possible when choosing a contractor for your
project. All Island Mason Supply recommends
employing the following criteria:
Look for a licensed contractor with at

least 5 years of experience doing the type of
work your project requires.
Beware of "fly-by-night" contractors who

arrive in an unmarked truck or van, or who
won't give a business address.
Don't fall prey to high-pressure sales
3
tactics, or offers to do a job at greatlyreduced prices.
Make sure the contractor you select has
4
liability insurance, and ask to see a copy of
his/her worker's compensation policy.

Insist on a contractor that provides
warranties on materials and workmanship.
Be sure you have a contract in writing

that defines the responsibilities of all parties
involved, as well as how you will be charged
for services!

Know the complete details about your
contractor's change order policy.
Get at least three bids for your project

and review them carefully to make sure
everything you want is included.
LAFARGE Packaged Products
Type I
Type I is a general purpose portland cement to
be used when special properties of other
cement types are not required. Typical
applications include foundations, paving slabs,
sidewalks, bridges, masonry units, and precast
concrete products.

Type IA
Type IA is also a general purpose portland
cement that contains an air entraining agent.
Entrained air enhances concrete’s durability
when exposed to freezing temperatures.

Type II
Type II is for general use applications when
moderate sulfate resistance or moderate heat of
hydration is desired. Type II will usually generate
less heat and at a slower rate than Type I.

Type III, when compared to Type I, generates
higher early compressive strengths. This product
is usually chemically the same as Type I, except it
is ground finer. Type III is typically used when
forms need to be removed quickly. Type III is
also used in cold weather to aid slower
hydration conditions.

EaglebondTM Type S Portland/ Lime
Eaglebond Type S is a controlled blend of
portland cement and Type S hydrated lime.
Eaglebond provides an excellent level of
performance in functional areas of workability,
compressive and flexural strength, water
permeance, durability, and appearance.

1. White Type I Portland is used to produce architectural concrete that
exhibits uniform, white, light and warm colored surface finishes.
2. White Type N & S Masonry Cement is specially
manufactured to produce white masonry mortar for use on brick, block, and stone
masonry construction when mixed with a white mason’s sand and clean,
potable water.
3. Type I Water Proofing is specially manufactured
to reduce the capillary water transmission under little or no pressure, but does not
stop water-vapor transmission.
4. Dark Masonry is used to enhance the appearance
of commercial and residential masonry structures.
Mixing Mortar In accordance with ASTM C 270 proportion specification,
batch at the rate of one bag of Lafarge Masonry Cement to 2-1/4 to 3 cubic
feet of damp, loose mason’s sand, complying with ASTM C 144, and potable
water. First, add 2/3 of the water followed by 1/2 of the sand, all of the cement,
and then the remainder of the sand and water. Continue mixing the mortar for
a minimum of five minutes after all of the materials have been charged. The
resulting mortar should meet or exceed the property requirements of ASTM C
270. Use of a cubic foot box to measure sand will improve batch-to-batch
uniformity.
Type N, S, M - Masonry Cement
Lafarge Masonry Cement is specially
formulated and manufactured to produce
masonry mortar for use on brick, block, and
stone masonry construction when mixed with
mason’s sand and clean, potable water.
Lafarge Masonry Cement is also used to
produce stucco.
Lafarge Type N, S, and M Masonry Cement
will make ASTM C 270 mortar for unit
masonry with minimum compressive strengths
of 750 psi, 1800 psi, and 2500 psi in 28 days,
respectively.
