Year 8 Hero
We were very proud of the heroic actions of Y8 student, Jibril Faris, who risked his own life to save two of his friends after their hoverboard
caught fire. We were also impressed by how articulate Jibril has been in the subsequent press coverage. Well done Jibril !
Science Visit to Leeds University
On the 15 December, thirty Yr9 students accompanied Mr. Mohammed and Miss Akudi to watch 'The Kitchen Chemistry Show' at the
University of Leeds. This was a demonstration lecture delivered by Dr Stephen Ashworth from the University of East Anglia which explored
the chemistry that we can do in our own homes. Common substances such as tea, food colouring, vinegar and polystyrene were used as
well as other chemicals like liquid nitrogen. Students were enthralled by the explosions, colour changes and other reactions taking place.
The lecture highlighted the fact that chemistry is used widely in everyday applications and linked to many of the chemistry topics students
have already covered in science classes.
Visit to National Media Museum in December
Our Y10s on the recognition event enjoyed being among the first in the country to see the new Star Wars film on its opening day. Students
were treated to a generous breakfast buffet, provided by our wonderful catering staff, before heading off for a look around the Media
Museum's latest exhibits. With that done, they settled down to one of the most anticipated movies of the year. Well done to our Y10s for all
their hard work, and a big thank you to Miss Hateley-Lowe, Mr Fitzpatrick, Mr Gower, Mr Hamid, Miss Howell and Miss Kazmi for making
sure the day was a great success.
Magna Trip
The trip to Magna on the 17 December 2015 was the first of our Cycle Recognition events and it was a roaring success. The students found
the day both informative and exciting. From the moment we set off, you could feel the buzz of anticipation on the coach. The students had
ample opportunities to explore the different rooms that were named after the elements and seemed to enjoy exploring the different
experiments that it had to offer. Magna is an old steelworks factory that has been converted into a museum, people are able to see how the
four different elements take a role in the formation of the steel. This is why the four different rooms are named after the different elements. A
particular hit for our students was the fire room; students enjoyed watching the fire display. Many of our students made references to
Gandalf and Dumbledore which was highly entertaining! All in all, everyone, including both staff and students, had a really positive
experience. Thank you to all who attended and supported with the trip; it was a huge success. We are now all looking forward to Cycle 2!
Year 9 Imperial War Museum
On Thursday 17 December, students from DTA visited the Imperial War Museum North in Salford Quays, Manchester. The students had the
opportunity to explore the museum at their leisure, investigating the causes and impacts of all conflicts since WW1. This ranged from
uniforms and weapons to the opportunity of speaking with a veteran of D-Day who had helped to liberate the Bergan Belson concentration
camp. Many students took this opportunity and were enthralled at what he had to say about being involved in one of the most significant days
in WW2. The 'Big Picture' shows, explaining what war was like on the home front were also very informative; the darkness and noise added
to the overall feeling of how people must have felt when the blitz occurred across the UK. Students also scaled the observation tower to look
over the set of Coronation Street and to get a panoramic view of the gentrification that has taken place in the Salford Quays area. Once
students had explored the museum Mr Crolla led a short tour of Media City, where both the BBC and ITV film a number of their popular
television shows, on the other side of the Manchester Ship canal. It was a very enjoyable day and I took great pleasure in taking the hardest
working students in Year 9 on this visit.

Y7 Expedition to Ullswater 2015
The expedition to Ullswater was a great triumph with students enjoying climbing their mountain to success. The students appreciated a
range of different activities from canoeing, high ropes, speed boating and raft building with the pinnacle of the expedition being to climb one
of the mountains in the Lake District. Many students battled the elements to get to the summit, but once there, they could appreciate their
achievements. Countless students expressed that they had triumphed over the struggle and that they will remember the expedition for a long
time to come. Special mention goes to Miss Dempsey and Miss Nixon's group for their spectacular inclusive group work where they literally
pulled each other up the mountain. A lot of perseverance and dedication went into the time away and special thanks goes to Mrs Hanson for
making the expedition a success. Another mention goes to all the staff for their support throughout the trip. But ultimately it's you, the
students that made the expedition a great success! Well done and we're looking forward to another excellent expedition in Y8.
Year 9 First Story Trip to Huddersfield University
On Monday 11th January a group of Y9 students travelled to Huddersfield University to take part in a day-long creative writing workshop as
part of First Story. The theme for the day was ‘Horizons’ and the students worked with author and performance poet Donovan Christopher
to create poems and prose on this subject. The students were also taken on a tour of the university and heard readings from poets such as
Kate Fox, who spoke about the importance of Northern voices and accents. At the end of the day a few brave students read their work in
front of a crowded lecture theatre which was a very proud moment for them. The First Story students are working towards publishing their
own anthology towards the end of the school year and this was a great day to hear the work of others and be inspired. Keep writing!
BAD WEATHER PROCEDURE
The winter season is upon us and we understand that our decision to open or close the school in bad weather has a big Affect on families. We
also understand that our students are better served - both academically and socially - by being in school. But as always, in the event of
disruption caused by heavy snow, our top priority is the safety of our students and staff. If heavy snow falls overnight and continues into the
following day, parents/carers are asked to observe the procedures which can be accessed on the school website under
www.dixonsta.com/Policies – Bad Weather Procedure. The decision as to whether or not to send your child to school, however, must be at
the discretion of parents, taking into account factors such as local road conditions and the availability of child-care. In our experience, as
soon as snow arrives, the school switchboard becomes overwhelmed with messages and queries from anxious parents. Therefore, we
would ask you to work with the arrangements set out in the procedure and only phone if it is an emergency. We would be grateful for your
support with these arrangements.
