New Radio New College
By Halee Turner
In January of 2013, Kay Saffe, Zane
Plattor, and Morgen Coe participated in
an independent study project tracking the
history of radio at New College. Through
this process they discovered WSLR
and the connection the station has
long had with New College.
Inspired in part by the University
of Miami’s radio station, WVUM,
Kay and Zane shared an interest
in student-run radio and a dream of
bringing that to New College. WSLR
seemed like the place to begin. They
began developing their own relationship
with the station by visiting the studio and
volunteering. Then, when they had a clear
vision of what they wanted to achieve at
WSLR, they approached the board. Met
with approval, Kay and Zane underwent
programmer training and soon New
Radio New College became a reality.
Kay, now a second year
psychology student, serves
as head of the NRNC Club
on campus. Her passion
for music and surfing
resulted in a surf rock show
for NRNC. Zane, a “hip guy”
who’s passionate about music,
hosts an electronic dance music power
hour and holds a spot on the board at
WSLR. Morgen still plays an active role
in NRNC as the “tech guy”. In addition
to maintaining the NRNC blog, he hosts
a show called "All the Way,” which plays
albums in their entirety.
New
Radio
New College
and
the
students
behind it are
driven by a
desire
not
only to give
New College
students
the opportunity to create programming
based around their passions and
interests, but also to connect New
College to the people of Sarasota. “NRNC
acts as an outlet for students to share
experiences and music with the public.
These perspectives contribute to both
the New College and greater Sarasota
communities,” says Kay. She and
Zane hope that NRNC will only see
improvement and growth in the years
to come, with an increasing variety of
scheduled programming that appeals
to both students and locals.
You can support them by tuning in to

on Sunday mornings, or online at

Fogartyville kicks off its first full season of events
After winning Sarasota Magazine’s Best New Music Venue Award last winter, the folks at the Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center took the summer off
to make further improvements to the community space. (Thanks to Chris Rouse, Mark Geoghegan, and David Beaton for all their hard work!) Fogartyville started
back up in September with a diverse lineup including outlaw bluegrass band Grandpa’s Cough Medicine, Frankie Piniero’s latest Cuban-influenced band, Proyecto
Son and bluesman Steve Arvey’s
Swamp Rats. Fogartyville, a non-profit run by the Peace Education and Action Center, continues its great partnership
with WSLR this Fall by hosting
many benefit events for the station. From authors to activists, potlucks to (CD) parties, folk to blues to jazz, we are
very excited about our up-coming
season. Check inside for a full listing and on the station website www.wslr.org/station-events. Bookmark the page
as we always have updates
a n d additions. Better yet, join our Facebook page to make sure you always get the latest news. See page 4,6
& back page for the
full
lineup.

she stepped onto the stage at Woodstock. The summer

launched a legendary career that spans more than 40

most folkies were either writing chronicles of daily life a` la Woody
Guthrie or singing anti-Establishment anthems a` la Bob Dylan,
Andersen displayed a fluent romantic vein. His art triumphed with
Blue River (’72), that ranks among the masterpieces of the era.

Some words from our board chair,
It’s a great day for radio in Sarasota.
by Captain Wayne Genthner

Fall is the time of year for change; you can feel it in the air. In the northeast and in the midwest, the changes are often dramatic and unexpected as jacket curling blusters from the north
sweep across sidewalks and streets that just a few weeks ago were steeped in the mugginess
of summer. Beaches and lakes which welcomed you with relief become whipped froths of
agitation. Many times though the changes are subtle suggestions of things to come, like the first
tinges of color which begin to trace the edges of September maple leaves. Or, for us in Florida, the
accumulated dew of the first chilly morning which informs us that our long hot summer will soon give way to
drier shirts and fewer showers. All things give way, it’s how life continues while it continues to improve.
Changes also happen to organizations, it’s essential to appreciate
those cycles and to honor the process.
David Beaton will be our new station manager starting later this fall.
The transition has already begun and
will be completed before the year’s
end. David co–founded WSLR and
has been active on the board of directors of the Pacifica Radio network
while concurrently advising our Board of Directors
on numerous technical and cultural issues germane
to Community radio. Because of his grasp of LPFM
issues, his dedication to positive constructive activism in community affairs and his willingness to apply himself to best management practices he was
approved for the position by a unanimous vote of
WSLR’s Board of Directors.

Our retiring manager, Arlene Sweeting, has
done an amazing job and in many respects her
performance exceeded any standard expressed
in WSLR’s mission statement or core values. Arlene will remain active in WSLR issues in a volunteer advisory capacity while
she pursues her interests in
Peace Education.
Thank you Arlene and Hello
Dave, it’s a great day for radio
in Sarasota.

Dave Pedersen: “I AM ADVENTUROUS!”
Hailing from the windy and cold city
of Chicago, Dave Pederson’s arrival in
Sarasota was a ‘A TRIP.’
He, like many others, followed relatives
here. He had grandparents in Venice, an
aunt in Sarasota, and an uncle in Punta
Gorda (the village manager). Colorado and
the Rocky Mountains are deeply embedded
in Dave’s soul. Having dirt on his boots is a
COMFORT to this man, so deciding to leave
(CO) was not easy. It was a ‘tug’ of opposites:
the west or the east/S.E. Dave’s lovely wife
helped him make that decision -somewhat.
She was studying PHARMACY in Illinois,
and when it was time for exams she
included the Florida version too. After she
passed - the ROUTE was set. Sarasota, 1985.
Sailing and the Gulf took the place of the
mountains and it has suited them well.
Dave worked several jobs including rural
mail delivery and marina work while he was

Stephen Jimenez, an award-winning

discussing The Book of Matt. In 2000,
he journeyed to Laramie to research the
story of Matthew Shepard’s murder, after
the two men convicted of killing him had gone to prison,
and after the national media had moved on. This talk is
sure to stir passions and inspire dialogue as it re-frames
this misconstrued crime and its cast of characters, proving
irrefutably that Matthew Shepard was not killed for being
gay but for reasons far more complicated — and daunting.

SMS: Describe your first instrument.
JB: My first guitar was a 3/4 sized Gibson.
I owned a variety of guitars in the 60’s but
bought my 1963 Gibson J45 in 1969 from
the Providence Guitar and Banjo Shop by
way of Paul Geremia and Dave Van Ronk. When the Florida
weather took its toll on the Gibson, I bought a Taylor 314 CE,
a very serviceable guitar. I also have an antique mandolin,
a uke, a 12 string guitar, and a concertina, none of I which I
play well, but I keep trying.

topical songs. Todd Rundgren has always been a favorite.

JB: Let your own music hypnotize you. Be inside your own

Halloween Show
Tickets: $5
Home from touring across the country
and abroad over the past few years, this
juiced-up backwoods country blues with a
dose of desert rock psychedelia that has
been described as “Hell’s Angels meets
the Amish.” Impressively, the two create
their “ripsaw sounds” (Los Angeles Times’
Randy Lewis) with only a few instruments.
Wayne (with the devilish voice), mainly
playing the kick-drum,
high-hat, acoustic guitar
and harp, serves as
the group’s rhythmic
driving force. Lucy (of
the fallen-angel voice)
delivers a gritty squall
on her “Lowebow”
— a custom-made
cigar-box
guitar:
“The Riff Monster.”
