the hispanic heritage committee
Celebrating our Heritage!
On behalf of the Hispanic Heritage Committee,
We would like to invite the community in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15
through October 15. The Hispanic Heritage committee (HHC) was established in 2007 to coordinate
and highlight Hispanic Heritage Month events that are being offered by city and state-wide organizations. This is our eight year together that committee meets on a monthly basis. Many organizations
have incorporated programming during the month to educate and engage all generations on heritage,
traditions, and practices focused on the contributions that Hispanics have made to American society in
the areas of fine arts, education, veteran affairs, business, government and health care. The goal of the
HHMC is to promote and preserve Hispanic culture for present and future generations. It is through
these events that we hope to continue the traditions and spirit that adds to our unique history, language
and legacy.
The month-long events will begin with a press-conference kickoff event on Friday, September 4, at
11 a.m. in Old Town Plaza. Mayor Richard Berry will host the event and the organizations represented
on the HHMC, along with invited speakers that represent our vibrant diverse community. A calendar
listing the month long events will be unveiled. Most events are open and free to the public. Please help
us support the many activities that are listed.
On a final note, we would like to thank the many organizations that are working together to provide
a unified effort to create educational and informational opportunities. We would also like to extend a
special Gracias to Albuquerque Business First who is our official media sponsor, the Albuquerque Hispano
Chamber of Commerce that serves as our backbone organization providing ongoing support to HHMC,
and the ABQ West Chamber of Commerce for helping to increase our presence throughout the community. It is through these valuable partnerships that we are able to work toward offering and publicizing a
series of events throughout the state.
Join us in the many celebrations!

Qué: Arpilleras are colorful patchwork pictures that are frequently
quilted or stitched onto sacking or
other backing. Many contemporary pieces depict peaceful scenes
of everyday life, but the art form
has its origins in protests against
the regime of General Augusto
Pinochet in Chile (1973-1990), a
time period where many Chilean
citizens were tortured, murdered
or disappeared. This exhibit from
the University Libraries collection
features pieces sewn by Chilean
women to commemorate the loss
of loved ones and to protest conditions under the Pinochet regime.

16 Art Fight showcases
local talent while
building community
Albuquerque has some talented
Hispanic artists who are making moves
in the art community at an exciting
local event called Art Fight.
James Montoya is the creator of Art
Fight, a live art competition hosted by
Tractor Brewing Co. The rules of engagement are pretty simple. Each artist
pays a small entry fee, brings a blank
canvas and supplies. Art Fight has a
different theme for each night and the
artists have three hours to create a
piece associated with that theme. At
the end of the evening, each artist’s
work is auctioned off and a winner is
declared. Some of the Art Fights have
been charitable events with proceeds
going toward local causes, including a
recent event which benefitted People’s
Anti-Cruelty Association. During Art
Fight, Tractor patrons receive a ticket for
each beer they purchase and can then
vote for their favorite with their ticket.
Ask any of the participating artists
and they will tell you that while winning Art Fight is the ultimate goal, the
best part is connecting with other artists. The building of the art community
is what James is most proud of. Allan

Alarment and Spoken respectively, are

september 15 — October 15, 2015 Early mentoring leads to
success in STEM careers
In fall 2001, a group of UNM engineering students began a mentoring
program that would change the path
of many young Hispanic students.
The program was called Hermanitos
and was part of the outreach effort by
the Hispanic Engineering and Science
Organization. Benito Martinez was
one of the founding members of the
program and Lilian Acosta-Casias was
one of the first Hermanitos.
17
The college students helped with
homework, ACT prep, financial aid, and
encouraged the Hermanitos to study engineering. Lilian recalls being excited to
see girls who spoke Spanish and studied
engineering. “Their expectations were
high, they were from the same area and
we could relate to them.”
Benito had similar experience before
entering college. He and his friends
had older cousins help them register
and they all said they’d apply together.
“There was a lot of hesitancy, a lot of
doubt, and we wondered how were we
going to pay for it?” These were some
of the reasons he felt it was important to
bring others along.
Benito has a Master’s degree in
Chemical Engineering. He has been
an engineer at Intel and is currently at
Sandia National Labs. Lilian recently
completed her Master’s degree in
Electrical Engineering and is currently
working on her Ph.D.
Let’s follow their example and find
a “hermanito” or “hermanita” to mentor
and guide toward a STEM career.
18 After serving his country,
Hispanic veteran continues
to serve his community
Andres Lazo is quite the active veteran. His first attempt at college didn’t
go as planned. Not wanting to let his
family down, he decided to pursue another avenue he had considered in high
school: joining the military.
Hispanic Heritage Month — Celebrando nuestro herencia
Andres enlisted on October 19, 2004.
He went to ranger school and joined
an elite scout sniper platoon. Andres
was deployed to Iraq in 2007. While
finishing a mission he was hit by part
of an Explosively Foreign Projectile on
the side of his head. At first he didn’t
realize he was hit. It was only later at a
hospital that he realized how devastatingly serious his injury was.
Determined to complete his service,
Andres returned to work two days later.
Andres completed his service and
returned to UNM. He became very involved in student veteran affairs. After
earning his BBA, Andres was recruited
to the Institute for Veterans and Military
Families in Syracuse, NY. He studied
government and graduated with an
MPA degree.
After college, Andres continued
to be involved in the community. He
served in the South Valley Coalition of
Neighborhood Associations. He frequently writes op-ed letters, attends
government meetings, serves on panels,
talks in front of people about issues
like education and water rights. He
consulted for Albuquerque’s Economic
Development department and is currently working on an early childhood
education certificate.
