$10 MILLION ALLOCATED TO HELP UNINSURED CHILDREN

Seven percent of Oregon’s don’t have health insurance, according to a Kaiser Health Foundation report on
the numbers as of 2013. Many of these children are uninsured because they are undocumented, and therefore
legally unable to benefit from the expansions provided
in the Affordable Care Act. To help address this problem, Oregon Latino Health Coalition and other advocates recently scored a legislative win: they lobbied the
legislature $10 million in state funds to directly pay for
uninsured children’s health care.
To learn a little more about this victory, we spoke
with OLHC’s executive director Alberto Moreno about
the funding allocation and the healthcare challenges
Oregon’s undocumented children still face.
El Hispanic News: Last year the Oregon Latino Health
Coalition co-authored a report estimating that there are
about 17,600 undocumented children in the state. To
the best of your understanding Alberto, do most or all
of these children lack health insurance?
Alberto Moreno: Not all of them but the majority
of them do. There are no numbers or estimates on the
numbers to refer to. What we do know is that Latinos in
the state of Oregon, documented and undocumented
together, have a 47 percent higher uninsurance rate.
We estimate that the percentage of uninsured undocumented children is very high.
EHN: Where exactly does the $10 million go—how
does it get to the kids?
Moreno: The allocation specifically goes to reimbursing clinics for the care they provide to undocumented children. It can include community health centers, migrant health centers, school-based centers and
others that qualify.
EHN: This earmark followed a 2014 effort to change
the state law to allow undocumented children access to
Medicaid coverage—a bill that was blocked in committee. Can you explain a little about how close you got in
2014 and what that legislation would have done?
Moreno: We actually came very close. The bill passed
the House with unanimous support and was introduced
in the Senate side, where it passed the health care committee with a yes vote of 4-1. It was subsequently referred
to the Ways and Means subcommittee where it languished and eventually died without a vote. We came
very close and believe we had the tentative support of
18 senators on the Senate side, but because the bill was
not allowed to get out of committee it died.
EHN: Was it a complete surprise when they killed the
bill or were you already expecting the Senate to be more
challenging than the House?
Moreno: We were expecting more challenges on the
Senate side, but we are always optimistic that our legislative friends will be more supportive ensuring all children have access to healthcare. We weren’t surprised, but
we were disappointed the Senate wasn’t able to support
this important measure. The Senate is generally more
reticent to move forward on immigration-related issues.
EHN: Where did the political opposition come from?
Moreno: The political opposition as best as we can
tell is really sourced from fear that Republicans will be
held to account for a vote in support of these children.
There’s a fear that in those rural parts of Oregon the constituents aren’t supported by granting health care benefits to undocumented children. There was a generalized fear that after the negative outcome of the driver’s

would engender a negative response.
EHN: So now there’s $10 million allocated to help
uninsured children. Is this a permanent solution? How
long do you expect this to last before the money runs
out?
Moreno: No this is not a permanent solution, this is
a temporary fix that will help to meet some of the need
for these children for the next few years. What we need
still is to go back and continue to work with those state
legislators to enact policy changes and make sure these
children are taken care of in perpetuity, the same way
that other children are taken care of.
EHN: What do you see as the next step going forward?
Is there anything else that can be done?
Moreno: The next step for us is to return to the state
legislature to reintroduce a bill that will allow us to
change this state policy which actively excludes these
children from Oregon’s promise. We’ll be launching a
major campaign to get support from the legislature to
enact those changes. It also means engaging our community members from across the state of Oregon on
the import of this issue for their families and children,
so we’ll be organizing and galvanizing communities
across Oregon.
EHN: Thanks for your time—is there anything else
we haven’t asked about that you’d like to add?
Moreno: I think we just want to invite Oregon to do
the right thing by these children. We believe this represents the best of who we are and that Oregon has
always intended to keep its promise to these children,
and it’s our role at the Oregon Latino Health Coalition
to remind elected leaders to keep this promise.

OREGON LEADERS JOIN NATIONAL FAST
AND VIGIL TO DEMAND THE 5TH CIRCUIT
COURT RULE ON ADMINISTRATIVE RELIEF
5th Circuit Judges are delaying on ruling that would
keep families together
Causa, Oregon’s immigrant rights organization, joined
the national Fair Immigration Reform Movement (FIRM)
along with directly impacted immigrant families and
national leaders representing faith, labor, civil rights and
the community in launching “The Fast to Keep Families
Together”. October 14 was the start to a powerful 9 day fast
and vigil outside the courthouse in New Orleans to demand
the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals rule on the administrative
relief case they have been sitting on for almost a year. The
administrative relief programs could keep families together
and provide them with temporary protections from deportation, work authorization, and a driver license.
Aldo Solano, a local Oregon community leader from
Woodburn, was among the 8 fasters in New Orleans. In
response to why he chose to participate in the 9 day action,
Aldo stated, “As a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals
recipient myself, I understand how important administrative relief can be for thousands of others who like me, are
only trying to work hard and become productive members
of society. I’m tired of politicians playing political games
with the lives of immigrants who contribute so much to
this country.” Aldo joined other fasters from California,
Arizona, Kansas, Maryland, New Mexico, and New York.
In Oregon, 9 immigrant women in Salem participated in
the national fast, in solidarity with Aldo, and called on the
5th Circuit to make a decision on administrative relief. “I’m
fasting to support the group that’s fasting outside of the 5th
Circuit Court in New Orleans. It’s urgent that the court make
a decision soon, and allow all of us to continue advancing”
said Norma, one of the 9 women fasting from Oregon.
Three months after the final hearing on the lawsuit
against DAPA and Expanded DACA, the 5th Circuit Court
of Appeals has failed to rule. This delay has prevented 5
million immigrants from applying for temporary relief for
a year now, since the Executive Action was first released.
A delay on the part of the 5th Circuit not only prevents the
Supreme Court from making a final decision, but defers
justice for immigrant communities.
“There is no reason to sit on this decision other than to
advance the partisan political agenda of anti-immigrant
leaders. Tearing families apart to advance an agenda for
political reasons is unacceptable and inhumane. Politicians and judges who stand against DAPA and DACA stand
against American families and communities” said Andrea
Miller, Executive Director of Causa.

When we think about our diet, we will
find various types of food with different
nutritional values. Our bodies naturally
need sugar to operate and have the energy
to allow us to finish our day strong. We
need to think about food as a fuel source
for our bodies. Like gasoline is needed to
run engines, our bodies need good sugars
and nutrients to allow us to operate in the
best possible way for the rest of our lives.
One way we consume sugar is through beverages. Many of the drinks we may like to
drink contain concerning levels of sugar. It
is possible to drink all the sugar our body
needs per day in one drink. Sugary drinks
are not just sodas but also include juices,
energy drinks, coffees and sweet nectars.
According to Sugary Drink Facts, “A typical
8-ounce children’s drink contains 60 calories and 16 grams of sugar – more sugar
than recommended for most children to
consume in an entire day.” It’s important to
be mindful of how much sugar these drinks
can have and to drink in moderation.
Kasandra Griffin Policy Manager, who
works with Upstream on developing policies to decrease sugary drinks and junk
food consumption, says, “Sugar is the
number one contributor to diabetes and
other chronic health conditions. However,
individual behavior is not the only contributor, we are going to need to change the
system.” Part of the reason our communities suffer from diabetes and other chronic
health conditions is based on larger systemic issues that include affordable food
options and targeted marketing to young
communities
If we look at the grocery aisle, juices
that are 100% juice will cost much more
than juice that is not 100% fruit juice.
Sugary drinks are likely to be cheaper
and therefore maybe a larger part of
our diet if healthier choices are not
affordable or accessible where we
live. If a drink is not 100% fruit juice
we are missing out on valuable nutrition. Essentially, giving our bodies
sugar without nutrition and vitamins.
Another issue is if the stores that are
near our home don’t have a selection
of healthier options, soda is likely to be
our choice to quench our thirst.
Also, what informs the selection of
the foods we drink has a lot to do with
the marketing that is used to get the product
familiarized. Sugary Drink Facts claim that
in 2013 Latino children saw more than 23%
more unhealthy drink ads on Television
in Spanish than 2010. This is a concern to
many as companies know how to target our
children. This means that they are likely to
choose products that are most recognizable
compared to a healthier option. Marketing
is largely something that we may not have
full control over, but we can moderate how
much we drink. Our community has a history of having resilient minds, bodies, and
souls. We need to ensure we can preserve
that strong resilience through our diets.
Replace Sugary Drinks with Water
Being aware of these issues can help us
better understand what is happening to
our bodies. Claudia Arana Colen Health

Health said, “The healthiest choice for a
drink may not be most accessible, one
option is to drink more water. Water is a
cheap zero calorie option that can be used
to maintain a healthy weight or even to lose
weight if sugary drinks are replaced with
water.” Selecting water is a very practical
way to ensure our bodies are hydrated and
cleansed of toxins. Another option is to add
fruits into our water like lemon, cucumber, and berries. Fruits have natural cleaners that when added to water help us flush
out bad toxins.
Our bodies are a lot like engines, to work
effectively we need to ensure that whenever possible we choose water and healthy
sugars to keep our bodies from breaking
down from chronic diseases caused by
sugars.

Editor’s Note: The Portland Mercado debuted the
Entrepreneurial Spirit: Latinos in Oregon/El Espiritu
Emprendedor: Latinos en Oregon exhibit at the Mercado
on October 15, 2015. The event was open to the public and
had over 250 people in attendance.
This exhibition can be seen on display at the Mercado
and El Hispanic News will be sharing it here in a three
part series.

COMING UP: BATTLE OF THE ACTS

While we are busy with the thunder and lightning of
campaign declarations, we might forget the gathering
clouds of the upcoming political storm. Like weather fronts
colliding, fighting forces are assembling for the 2016 Battle
of the Acts: Equality vs. First Amendment Defense.
Despite being a false dichotomy, the partisan armies
are preparing to advance their measures, and the candidates have staked their positions, surprising no one. Hillary Clinton declared the Equality Act her highest priority,
which could be the simplest way of pandering if she did
not have an ample record of defending LGBT rights both
as senator and as Secretary of State. Her main
Democratic rival, Senator Bernie Sanders, is the
co-sponsor of the Equality Act, an expansion of
the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (and other laws) to
include protections for sexual orientation and
gender identity.
The champions of the First Amendment
Defense Act include the entire Republican
National Committee, which endorsed it in
August. GOP candidates for the most part have
also expressed support for the law that intends
to prevent retaliation (or indeed responsibility)
for discriminating based upon one’s belief. Critics point out that it is impractical in its broad
scope in definitions, and narrow focus on one
particular religious position. Mike Huckabee,
Rick Santorum and Bobby Jindal have rattled the
religious sable the loudest, but their declarations
often reveal a – true or feigned – ignorance of the
constitutionally mandated separation of church
and state. The narrow focus of the proposed act may itself
be unconstitutional, according to the Washington Post.
While the lack of legal basis may be the end of FADA,
the fate of the Equality Act may well be decided along with
the presidential election in 2016: all 435 seats in the House
of Representatives are in play, as well as 34% of the Senate.
With the Republican majority in the House in recent disarray after the resignation of Speaker John Boehner and
the embarrassment of fruitless hearings on Benghazi and
Planned Parenthood, it may get a shakeup from unhappy
voters. If a Republican majority remains, that may mark
the death knell of the Equality Act, even if a Democratic

declaraciones de campaña, quizás nos olvidemos de las nubes
que se reúnen en la futura tormenta política. Como frentes de
viento chocando, las fuerzas se reúnen para la Batalla de los
Actos del 2016: el Acto de la Igualdad vs. el Acto de Defensa de
la Primera Enmienda (FADA, por sus siglas en inglés).
Sin importar ser una dicotomía falsa, los ejércitos partidarios se preparan para avanzar sus propias medidas, y
los candidatos han declarado sus posiciones, sorprendiendo a nadie. Hillary Clinton declaro que el Acto de la Igualdad sería su más alta prioridad, que podría haber sido una
promesa hueca, sino fuera por su amplio record en defensa
de los derechos LGBT ambos en el Senado y como Secretaria de Estado. Su rival principal demócrata, Bernie Sanders, es co-patrocinador del Acto, una expansión del Acto de
Derechos Civiles de 1964 (y otras leyes) para incluir protecciones para la orientación sexual e identidad de género.

pero sea por ignorancia o malicia, el Republicano que promete ahora promover FADA está declarando que no protegerá la Constitución como existe hoy.

It was sixteen years ago that now familiar names like Shakira, Celia Cruz, Juan
Luis Guerra, Los Tigres del Norte and Maná
shared the honor of receiving the first wave
of Latin Grammys.
Like the Oscars™, the Grammys are
awarded by the professionals of the industry
it recognizes, in this case, the membership
association called Latin Recording Academy. Nine months of preparations and preliminary events lead up to one of the most
glamorous nights in the recording industry.
Among the artists recognized for a lifetime
of achievement in the eleven years since
the LRA has awarded them, are Mercedes
Sosa, Roberto Carlos, Sergio Mendes, Rocío
Durcal, José Feliciano and Rita Moreno. Los
Tigres del Norte were honorees in 2007. The
LRA Hall of Fame has inducted single recordings like “Cómo fue” by Beny Moré, “Mais
que nada” by Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66,
“Eres tú” by Mocedades, and the ranchera
classic “El Rey” by José Alfredo Jímenez.
The presenters and performances will be
in the hands of past winners and current nominees, including a very special guest appearance by Will Smith with Bomba Estéreo in
“Fiesta.” Other nominees with musical numbers include ChocQuibTown, Matisse and
Natalia Jímenez (with two nominations).
This year’s nominees also include perennial crowd favorites Miguel Bosé, Camila,
Enrique Iglesias (joining Nicky Jam in the
Urban Performance category), and hoping
to add to his 15 Latin Grammys, Juan Luis
Guerra, who will also perform. Maná is also
back among the hopefuls, with rock acts like
Charliepapa from Venezuela and No Te Va
Gustar from Uruguay.
In the long video category Kinky’s
MTV Unplugged production faces competition from Argentinian sensation (and
co-founder of Los Fabulosos Cadillacs)
Vicentico and Colombian phenomenon
Juanes. Short video favorites are Calle 13
with two nominated videos.
The vast majority of the 20 or so regional
and stylistic divisions are dominated by male
artists of long standing, like Ricky Martin,
Daddy Yankee, Rubén Blades. Astrid Asher,
Lila Downs and Natalia Lafourcade are three
in the handful of female vocalists nominated
(mainly folk singers), although the faces
cropping in the Best New Artist category
are a sign of hope, and maybe Raquel Sofía
or Julieta Rada are the next Shakira or Julieta
Venegas (who is also nominated this year).
Unfortunately, much will be made of what
the women are wearing, as it was the case last
year with the gorgeous nude dress worn by
Roselyn Sanchez, the lacy top on Marcia Jones
and the peek-a-boo cleavage on Mauza Antonio, or whether Alessandria Ambrosio “wore
it better” than Kim Kardashian.
The true benefit to reaching now more
than a decade and a half of this celebration
is its significance for the visibility and recognition of Latinos in general and Latino
artists in particular. It is much more than a
cliché to say that America moves to a Latin
rhythm, and that the poetry and cadence of
our culture has suffused the land throughout its history. From the Western ballads
and corridos to the love of Caribbean culture in the Southeast, Latino musicians
have been a spice in America’s melting pot.
The Latin Grammys is where they shine as
the main course.

counterparts. Sergio Cuellar is statewide campaign coordinator with Californians for Justice, a grassroots advocacy

What are you seeing in California now that excites you

2015 OUTBACK; EL AMOR A UN SUBARU

Subaru vendió por primera vez el pasado año, medio
millón de autos en el mercado estadounidense. Este
número no sería significativo, si no habláramos de una
marca que es relativamente poco conocida en algunos
estados del país. En regiones donde nieva y llueve mucho,
Subaru es archiconocido. La reputación la han ganado los
japoneses con un auto que no ostenta lujo, pero si eficiencia y confianza. Tras Ford, Subaru es la marca de autos que
más apego sienten los que la usan.
El Outback, nuestro auto de prueba esta semana, ha sido
el principal emblema de la compañía, sobrepasando ampliamente en número de ventas a otros miembros de la familia
como el Legacy, Forester o Impreza. Introducido a finales de la década de los noventas, los Subaru Outback’s han
sido preferidos por los que eligen aventura y vida activa,
y no solo por apariencia. Es más común ver un Outback
salpicado de lodo, que casi ningún otro auto hoy en día.
El 2015 llega completamente renovado. En el exterior,
aunque es prácticamente igual en tamaño que su predecesor, por el arte del diseño han logrado crearle una apariencia más robusta y elegante, que lo asemeja cada vez más
a un SUV. En el interior y la calidad de manejo los cambios
son más relevantes. El Outback tiene un parecido más cercano al Subaru Legacy en su interior, con una disposición
limpia y funcional donde destaca el nuevo sistema de información y entretenimiento –infotainment- de nueva generación. Ahora hay más posibilidades de conexión, incluyendo MirrorLink, una tecnología que permite la conexión con teléfonos inteligentes, para mostrar en la pantalla
del auto varias de las opciones en el teléfono, incluyendo
navegación y audio. Lamentablemente por el momento, la
lista de teléfonos compatibles permanece reducida.
Bajo la cubierta del motor también hay novedades en el
nuevo Outback. Subaru ha incorporado dos nuevos modos

y 20/27 respectivamente.
Con estos motores, la refinada transmisión continua
-CVT- Lineartronic de 9 velocidades, hace un trabajo encomiable, simulando cabios de forma muy acertada que
para nada hacen pensar que el auto tiene una transmisión
automática convencional. En carretera se siente algo rígido,
no lo suficiente como para molestar. Subaru ha logrado con
clase, combinar el auto ideal para la aventura, con el sedán
seguro para llevar a los pequeños a la escuela cada mañana.
Mejorar un producto que goza de tremenda aceptación
siempre es riesgoso. Hacerlo con mesura, retocando aquí y
allá, logrando que los cambios no sean demasiado espectaculares a la vista, pero si efectivos en funcionalidad, es
el gran mérito de Subaru con la versión 2015 del Outback.
No es difícil entonces entender el slogan comercial de la
compañía: “Amor es lo que hace de un Subaru, un Subaru”

For the first time last year, Subaru sold half a million
cars in the U.S. market. This number would not be significant if it weren’t about a brand that is relatively unknown
in some states. In regions where it snows and rains a lot,
Subaru is well known. The Japanese have won a reputation
as a car that doesn’t display luxury but does efficiency and
confidence. After Ford, Subaru is the brand more users feel
attached to. The Outback, our test car this week, has been
the main symbol of the company, far exceeding the number
of sales to other family members such as the Legacy, Forester, and Impreza. Introduced in the late nineties, the
Subaru Outback has been preferred by those who choose
adventure and an active lifestyle, and not just for appearance. It is more prevalent to see an Outback splattered with
mud than almost any other car today.
The 2015 comes completely renovated. On the outside,
though it’s almost the same size as its predecessor, with the
design they have managed to create a more robust and stylish appearance, it looks more and more like an SUV. The
interior and the ride quality are the most relevant changes.
The Outback has a closer resemblance to the Subaru Legacy
inside, with a clean and functional layout where the new
generation infotainment system stands out. There are
now more connection possibilities, including MirrorLink,
a technology that allows connection to smartphones, to
display several of the phone’s options on the car’s screen,
including navigation and audio. Unfortunately for now, the
list of compatible phones remains short. Under the hood,
there are also changes in the new Outback.
Subaru has added two new performance modes including X-Mode that makes the vehicle more “intelligent” when
it passes through narrow and irregular trails while offering
a successful and visible response when traveling on the
highway. There are two engine options, both flat or “boxer”.
For those not familiar with them, this is a type of low-level
engine where the pistons work horizontally, opposed to
each other. This engine provides more stability to the car
for its low center of gravity. Despite having been patented
in 1896 and used by manufacturers such as Alfa Romeo,
Ferrari, Volkswagen and Chevrolet among others, currently,
only Porch and Subaru still use this system. Engine choices
are a 2.5 4-cylinder and 175 horsepower, or a 3.6 6-cylin-
der engine that delivers 256 horsepower. Fuel economy is
25/33 and 20/27 respectively.
With these engines, the refined 9-speed Lineartronic
continuously variable transmission—CVT—does a commendable job, simulating changes correctly that in nothing
suggests that the car has a conventional automatic transmission. On the road, it feels somewhat stiff, not enough
to disturb. Subaru has managed, with class, to combine the
ideal adventure car with the sedan safe to bring the little
ones to school each morning. Improving a product that
enjoys tremendous acceptance is always risky. Doing it with
restraint, tweaking here and there, making the changes not
too spectacular to look at, but useful in functionality, is the
great merit of the 2015 version of the Subaru Outback. It is
not difficult then to understand the company slogan: “Love
is what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.”

Lo que he visto en los últimos años es la voluntad de participar, por un lado, pero también
el miedo de involucrarse demasiado. Para los
padres de los estudiantes indocumentados, por
ejemplo, se preguntan lo que podría pasar...
¿se revelará su estado? ¿Se enterará alguien?
Hay un miedo de exponer a la familia. La otra
pieza es aquellos padres que están dispuestos
a participar, pero que no saben cómo navegar
el sistema. Al no tener acceso a o incluso la
manera de navegar el sistema escolar detiene a
los padres de involucrarse más profundamente.
Y esto regresa a la promesa de LCFF... las comunidades que rodean a la escuela tendrán mayor
opinión de cómo se gasta el dinero, pero la fórmula también replantea como se comprometen
estas comunidades.
¿Cuáles son las actitudes que has visto entre
los padres con respecto a la presión para traer
más tecnología al salón de clases?

It’s also difficult for schools and communities
trying to figure out what the different policies
are … they make their way from the legislature

lo caribeño en el sudeste, los músicos latinos han sido una especia en el caldo cultural. La entrega del Latin Grammy los

alumnos. No tenían maestros afroamericanos.
Algunos de los estudiantes decían: “Yo no veo
a nadie en una posición de poder quien se vea
o hable como yo, o entienda mi historia o perspectiva.” Si no sienten confianza ni ven una
figura adulta con quién conectar, eso va a ser
un problema.
Un gran foco de CFJ involucra conectar a las
comunidades con quienes hacen las de decisiones en Sacramento.
¿Cuáles son los desafíos allí?
Cuando la gente en Sacramento quiere saber
lo que está pasando en la educación, tiende a
consultar expertos en lugar ir directamente a
las personas afectadas. Es muy bueno tener ese
nivel de apoyo y el conocimiento que eso conlleva al representar a estas comunidades sobre la
equidad educativa. Pero otra historia a la de traer
a jóvenes o llevar a los padres al capitolio y verlos
como expertos. Eso sigue siendo un desafío y es
algo que hemos estado tratando de descifrar.
También es difícil para las escuelas y las
comunidades que tratan de averiguar lo que
son las diferentes políticas... descienden de la
legislatura a la Junta Estatal y finalmente, a los
distritos, y a veces incluso los distritos no entienden lo que son. Es descorazonador encontrarse
con escuelas que pueden estar al servicio de
una población más alta de estudiantes de bajos
ingresos o de estudiantes aprendiendo inglés,
sin embargo permiten que el distrito decida
cuales programas se ejecutan simplemente
porque no entienden el proceso.
Más allá de LCFF, ¿cuáles son algunos de
los otros temas en que CFJ se está enfocando?
De hecho, estamos trabajando en nuestro
plan estratégico en este momento. Hemos identificado el LCFF al menos para el próximo año
o dos para hacer un trabajo muy profundo en
las comunidades en donde estamos - y eso es
San José, Fresno, Long Beach y Oakland. A nivel
estatal, nos hemos asociado con la Campaña por
la Calidad de Educación para presentar más de
101 talleres sobre el LCFF. Cada una de nuestras

LCFF para construir una masa crítica y crear

Beyond LCFF, what are some of the other
issues that CFJ is focusing in on?
We’re actually going through our strategic
plan at this point. We’ve identified LCFF at least
for the next year or two to do really deep work in
the communities we’re in – and that’s San Jose,
Fresno, Long Beach and Oakland. One a statewide level, we’ve partnered with the Campaign
for Quality Education to deliver LCFF 101 workshops. Every one of our chapters is also doing
work on LCFF to build a critical mass and to build
up knowledge and put pressure on districts to
make sure parent and student voices are part of
the conversation. Across the state, we’ve really
played a convener role to really push the issue of
LCFF and to push communities to come out and
take part in pressuring the district … to show that
we know what’s going on and that you’re going
to be held accountable.

DEAR YOU OF TODAY
We are at an amazing point in time—we
are at a new intersection. It is at this intersection where we can collide or change. I
have been doing some serious reflecting.
Moments throughout the day, at events,
on motorcycle rides and rallies. At LGBTQ
events, protest, pickets, boycotts, and even
over coffee. I have tried to steal a moment
from each by being still long enough to
observe and extract the essence of the experience, and its meaning. It’s those moments
I have opened my heart to, and many of
those moments that kept me up late at
night. My brain combing through them
seeing how they apply to life, my life, and
the lives of people different than me.
We have arrived at the intersection
our leaders and forefathers has prophesied, forecast, computed, worked towards,
fought for!

Some moments of stillness are easy and
enjoyable to drawn meaning from. Like
seeing my mom laugh—others may just
hear laughter from a woman. What I am
hearing is her soul filled with the oxygen
of joy, returning the sparkle of light—that I
thought was lost after my father passed—to
her beautiful brown eyes. I look at that cherished moment and I look at life, and then
the world. I know somewhere and probably
everywhere people are having the relief of
this long awaited experience as well.
I am still for a moment while I see
Europe mourn for her German country as
that nation is both welcoming and rioting the change of this now inevitable new
world. I am still while I hear the old guy at
the bar talking about Mexicans taking over
the US. Then I hear Mexicans talking about
the “re-browning of America in the name of
Aztlán.” I see the black and African-American movements pulse through our land.
I see the nation’s first people stand tall
though it ALL. Then all of these moments
unexpectedly collide at the Elks Lodge in
Seaside, Oregon USA where comedian
Marga Gomez shares with the packed ballroom of lesbians at the third annual Eden
PNW’s weekend. While noting our queerness and physical location, she said, “We
could not have this 20 years ago, just 20 y-ea-r-s a-g-o we could not have any of this.”
Those thoughts and moments I have
been collecting and pondering collided all
at once like an explosion in my head. Marga
Gomez’s statement couldn’t be more fucking true! It’s true for everyone, from Germany, to the Middle East, to the US. This
statement rings true for conservatives, liberals, Latinos, black, African American,
Native American, Asian, LGBTQ, people of
all faiths, and every letter and every color
in between. Just 20 years ago we could not
have any of this. We have arrived at the
intersection our leaders and forefathers has
prophesied, forecast, computed, worked
towards, fought for!
As we all gather at the crossroad, I worry.
I worry that we forget our commonalities.
The fiber that makes our lives worth living.
Those moments that we share that make us
strong, those moments like the laughter of
a healing mother. The joy of being newlywed, our revitalization when we fellowship
among our peers, family, and community.
I worry that we are on this road of change
and while we take a deep breath moments
before we push forward, we forget that we
breathe the same air. I worry that we move
rapidly towards one another with hate and
fear guiding our hearts. I worry that we
forget the joy of our mother’s laughter, the
warmth of holding a loved one’s hand, and
the sadness of history and how we have all
been hurt. I worry that we forget the teachings of love and compassion and how it
has healed us. I worry that we regress to
our earlier teachings of hate and fear and
that’s what guides us through the intersection of change.
We should worry because every day we
see the societies’ of our world become the
victims of our vocation. We should worry
that at this new intersection of change it
again becomes the road our global history has already taken and traveled over
and over again. This brings me to the 4
letter word that I rarely use. That word
is hate—its only existence in my world is
towards ignorance and arrogance as they
breed the most dangerous of the 4 letter
words, FEAR!
We can see people operating out of fear
everywhere and sadly every day. Some are
taught it in school, faith, from their parents, community, and peers. Fear teaches
fear, then it gathers followers, and hate
grows stronger. I am a person of faith and
strong spiritual connections, however, what
I cannot subscribe to is faiths, religions,
education, and governments that teach
fear, oppression, and objectification. We
should not tolerate teachings of violence
and murder in a God’s name. We should not
tolerate this as we are not our forefathers,
and we do not have to relive or recreate
the bloody fibers of our historic tapestries.
We are at that moment where we can
collide, or change. But first we have to be
the change….
I hope you are equally as encouraged
as I am by the people we write about in
PQ, El Hispanic News, and Tankside. These
people are changing the world every day.
They stand strong, without fear, seeking
out the new world. Clearing the road for
us, ridding it of hate and fear, ignorance
and arrogance.
I will leave you with the 6 words I choose
to live by:
“FEAR, fuck fear. LIVE & LOVE!”

Estamos en un punto asombroso de la
historia - estamos en una nueva intersección. Es en esta nueva intersección en donde
podemos chocar o cambiar. He estado
reflexionando seriamente. En momentos

un cafecito. He intentado
robar un momento de
cada uno para detenerme
a observar y extraer la esencia de la experiencia, y su
significado. Momentos a los
cuales he abierto mi corazón, y muchos de esos momentos me mantuvieron despierta hasta entrada la noche.
Mi cerebro repasándolos para ver cómo se
aplican a la vida, a mi vida, y a las vidas de
gente distinta a mí.
¡Hemos llegado a la intersección que
nuestros líderes y antepasados han
profetizado, previsto, computado, por la
que han laborado y por la que han luchado!

Algunos momentos para detenerse a
reflexionar llegan fácilmente y complace
el encontrar significado en ellos. Como ver
a mi mamá reír - otros quizás sólo oyen la
risa de una mujer. Lo que yo oigo es su alma
llena del oxígeno de la dicha, el regreso de
la chispa de luz-que pensé perdida después
del deceso de mi padre -a sus hermosos ojos
cafés. Veo eso momento adorado y veo la
vida, y luego el mundo. Sé que en alguna
parte y probablemente por todas partes la
gente tiene el alivio de esta experiencia tan
esperada también.
Me detengo por un momento mientras
veo a Europa ponerse de luto por su tierra
alemana mientras esa nación simultáneamente da la bienvenida y se amotina por el
cambio de este nuevo mundo, ahora inevitable. Me detengo mientras que oigo al viejo
individuo en el bar que habla de los mexicanos tomando el control Estados Unidos.
Luego oigo a mexicanos hablando del
“re-morenamiento de América en nombre
de Aztlán.” Veo los movimientos negros y
afroamericanos pulsar a través de nuestra tierra. Veo a los primeros pueblos de la
nación perseverar a pesar de TODO. Luego
todos estos momentos chocan inesperadamente en la logia de los Elk en Seaside,
Oregon, USA, donde la comediante Marga
Gómez comparte el salón de baile con todas
lesbianas que pueden caber en el salón
durante el Tercer Fin de Semana Anual de
Eden PNW.
Mientras que remarcaba sobre nuestra “rareza” y ubicación física, ella dijo, “no
teníamos esto hace 20 años, a-p-e-n-a-s 20
a-ñ-o-s no teníamos nada de esto.”
Esos pensamientos y momentos que he
estado recogiendo y considerando chocaron
repentinamente como una explosión en mi
cabeza. ¡La declaración de Marga Gómez no
era mas que la pinche verdad! Es verdad para
todo el mundo, de Alemania, al Medio Oriente, a los Estados Unidos. Esta declaración
suena verdad para los conservadores, los
liberales, los latinos, negros, afroamericanos,
indígenas americanos, asiáticos, LGBTQs,
gente de todas las fes, y cada letra y cada
color y matiz. Hace apenas 20 años no teníamos nada de esto.

que nos disparamos uno contra el otro con
odio y temor guiando nuestros corazones.
Me preocupa el que nos olvidamos de la
dicha de la risa de una madre, el calor de
la mano de un ser amado, y la tristeza en la
historia y como todos hemos sido heridos.
Debe preocuparnos el que diariamente
sociedades en nuestro mundo son víctimas de nuestra vocación. Debe preocuparnos el que esta intersección de cambio se
convierta una vez más en la misma senda
histórica que el mundo ha tomado una y
otra vez. Y esto me trae a la mala palabra
que raramente uso. Esa palabra es odio- su
única existencia en mi mundo es hacia la
ignorancia y la arrogancia que engendran
la palabra más peligrosa:TEMOR.
Podemos ver gente motivada por temor
por todas partes y desgraciadamente todos
los días. Algunos lo aprenden en la escuela
o de su fe, sus padres, comunidades y compañeros. El temor enseña otros a temer,
consigue adherentes y fortalece al odio.
Soy una persona de fe y fuertes lazos espirituales, sin embargo no puedo suscribirme
a fes, religiones, educación o gobiernos que
enseñan a temer, oprimir, y deshumanizar.
No debemos tolerar las enseñanzas de violencia y masacre en nombre de un Dios. No
debemos tolerarlo porque no somos nuestros antepasados y no tenemos porque revivir o recrear las fibras sangrientas que tejen
nuestra historia.
Estamos en un momento en que
podemos chocar o cambiar. Pero primero
debemos ser el cambio…
Espero que usted se sienta tan alentado
como yo por las personas sobre quienes
escribimos en PQ, El Hispanic News y
Tankside. Estas personas están cambiando
nuestro mundo día a día. Perseveran, sin
temor, buscando el nuevo mundo. Abriendo
