ULHS ATHLETICS
Sandy Coatney, Athletic Director
We are in the middle of Winter Sports for athletics – Basketball started league
play after the break, and wrestling league meets started on January 21. We have
some exciting teams – come watch. The boys are much improved over last year,
starting the season 9-4, and the girls are doing very well. Wrestling is going well,
with the girls taking a third place overall at the Liberty Tournament in the bay
area. We have lots of home games left, and three wrestling meets, so come
down and support the Cougars! (Schedules are available on the website at
www.ulhs.net)
Spring sports, including track, softball, and baseball, start on February 8. Our
coaches are Kelly Coburn for softball, E.J. Crandell for baseball, and John
Plencner for track. We are going to have a JV baseball team this year! Lots of
students are excited about that. Coaches/volunteers/drivers need to come in to
make sure their information is current, including TB test, CPR/First Aide, Driver
License, and Certifications. Students may not even practice without their
paperwork (physical, insurance) and coaches may not run practices without their
credentials.
I would like to include a word or two about eligibility. Students do not need to get
a new physical unless it has been 12 months since their last physical (or the 12
months expires during the season). However, parents/guardians will need to
sign a new athletics card recognizing that sports are a privilege and giving the
student permission to play. All athletes must maintain a 2.0 GPA and have a
current physical and insurance, along with a concussion notification sheet and
ejection policy notice. One thing I would like to emphasize – students must be at
school ALL DAY in order to play that day (or all day Friday for a Saturday game).
Student’s may not show up at break because they were ‘sick’ in the morning (or
slept in) and expect to play in the game that afternoon.

ULHS MOCK TRIAL TEAM PREPARES
FOR COUNTY COMPETITION
The ULHS Mock Trial team is preparing for the Lake County Competition on February 12. This year’s team recently
competed against Laytonville and did very well in the Lake County Scrimmage.
The team is lead by standout Defense Attorney and Team Captain, Mercedes DeLosSantos, who is in her fourth year of
Mock Trial. The remaining lawyer team is filled out with first year members: David Becerra-Lopez, Zachary Sneathen,
Armando Santos and Cheyanne Obedoza. We also have returning sophomores: Lyndsay Wade and Jasmine Soliz, who will
anchor the pre-trial arguments. The witnesses this year are led by Austin Hill, Adrianna Saldana and other first year team
members doing a great job.
This year’s trial is a murder case, and the students have done an amazing job of learning each of their roles and
responsibilities. Beyond that, these students must incorporate personality into each of these roles.
We look forward to our County Competition.

A belated Happy New Year to all!

Our student body is in full swing with basketball games and wrestling meets taking place. Come join in the
excitement in watching our students, your children, compete. We anticipate championships this season.

The sophomore class has scheduled their Winter Formal for February 12 with a sweetheart theme. The dance will
be held here on campus in the cafeteria. On March 12, at Clearlake High School in Lakeport, there will be an allcounty school dance. This will be a positive time of coming together as a community of schools.
In January, the student body hosted “Rachel’s Challenge.” Each day 160,000 students do not go to school for
fear of being bullied, teased or harassed. Rachel’s Challenge is a program to encourage students to treat others
with respect and compassion. This program comes from the story of the tragic death of Rachel Scott, a victim at
Columbine High School, and is a program to help make schools safer and a more connected place for teaching
and learning.
“People will never know how far a little kindness can go.”
…..Rachel Scott
Our student body has again requested we support St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Our penny drive will begin
March 1 and run through March 25. Save your loose change and help make a difference in fighting the battle of
childhood cancer. Let’s start a chain reaction of kindness.

Testing:
It is our second year of Smarter Balanced testing. This is the new testing platform that uses an online platform.
th
Smarter Balanced currently tests math and English for 11 graders. We will still test Life Science this year for
th
10 grade. Testing for both of these will take place in mid-April. Additionally, Advanced Placement testing
takes place the first two weeks in May. I will be going around to classes to talk about this before the end of
January.
Last year our school did really well in comparison to other schools in the county and State. In fact, our school
is now out of Program Improvement. Students needing extra help are welcome to come to the after school
program, Monday-Tuesday-Thursday-Friday (no Wednesday) from 3-4 pm. We even have school
transportation home following the after-school program (for most students).

Upper Lake FFA members are living up to our theme of "Don't Blend In, Stand Out" this year. We have had great attendance at our
monthly Chapter meetings, record numbers attending the Greenhand, Made for Excellence and Advanced Leadership Academy
conferences, and we are projecting higher involvement with livestock projects for the Lake County Fair.
Our students and community members did a "stand out" job of supporting the Wreaths Across America program, and we were able to
place over 400 wreaths on Veteran’s headstones at the Upper Lake Cemetery on December 14th. This was another record for us!
Students sold over 125 wreaths and the rest came from a national sponsor. Thank you to all who helped with this effort!
We also hosted a very successful food drive which generated over 780 donated items! School Board Member Claudine Pedroncelli will
coordinate the food donations through the Upper Lake Community Food Program which gives out boxes on the third Tuesday of every
month at the Odd Fellows Hall in Upper Lake starting at 4 pm. Mr. Jose Arroyo's 1st period Upward Bound Class won the free breakfast
(put on by our FFA Officers) by bringing in the most items.
We are looking forward to the spring with new livestock projects at the school farm and the new planting season. Our students will be
involved in building raised beds in the garden and helping with projects/upgrades at the school farm and the Ag Mechanics shop.
Students are also gearing up for their “Supervised Ag Experience (SAE)” projects which can include livestock production, gardening
projects, career exploration and a variety of home and community improvement projects. If students want to raise a livestock animal to
sell at the Lake County Fair, they need to be contacting Mrs. Boomer ASAP so they can get on lists for breeders. Animals may be kept
at the school farm if needed. There will be a mandatory meeting in Mrs. Boomer's classroom on WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 3rd at
6:30pm for parents AND students who want to sign up for animal project with Upper Lake FFA.
Upper Lake FFA will be holding a "Cookie Dough" fundraiser starting January 18th - February 12th to help students raise money to
attend the State FFA Leadership conference in April. National FFA Week is the week of February 15th - 19th with our Chapter Meeting
and Greenhand Degree Ceremony taking place on the 17th at 6:30pm in the Cafeteria. We have fun games and activities planned for
the whole week and we hope our members and parents will be involved! Look for a flyer of upcoming activities/events and fundraising
forms to be sent home with your student soon.
If you have any questions or would like to know more about Upper Lake FFA and ways to be involved, please contact Erica Boomer at
[email protected].

THE IMPORTANCE OF ATTENDING SCHOOL
Much



of a student’s success is determined by the following:
Good attendance
Appropriate nutrition and physical activity
Time management (school work first and TV, cell phone, iPod, YouTube,
Facebook and all other social networking second)
 Seeking help when you don’t understand.
Students should have a 90-100% attendance rate. This is the first step to success. If
they are attending school on a regular basis, we have more contact with them and
have the time to cover the curriculum. If a student misses school, trying to catch up
in seven classes becomes very difficult.
