Ecological Building
The chair
Currently, Ecological Building in a global sense
is the central topic of building in general and so
will be in future.
The chair has been established as a foundation
professorship by the Deutsche Bundesstiftung
Umwelt (DBU) and supported from 1998 until
2003.
Designing and redesigning the entire built environment in a sustainable way is one of the
most interesting and challenging but also most
difficult building tasks, which beyond the necessity of environmental protection, improves and
enriches life.
The important working field of the
chair is to develop the different
activities in the field of building and
environment beyond the borders of
the individual disciplines.
At present everyone is tinkering its own ecology
within all different fields of building – mostly with
contradictory results and often too expensive.
Not before Ecological Building is understood and
performed within its overall problematic nature,
these contradictions can be dismissed and
wonderful solutions can be developed.

Studies of civil engineering (construction,
water, traffic) with practical work in Europe and
Asia; completion in 1968
Planning, construction and calculation of
buildings at Ed. Züblin AG, research mainly in
the field of structures, PhD and teaching
(building technology)
Since 1979 Professor for “Applied Building
Technology” at the University of Hamburg and at
the TU Hamburg-Harburg along with fundamental work on ecological building

Ecological Planning and Building” at the Faculty
of Architecture, Bauhaus University Weimar

Research and development of ecological planning and building, ecological concepts and
practical planning and building activities, e. g.
Umwelthaus Norderstedt, ecological settlement
in Oldesloe, low energy buildings, solar-facade
with transparent insulation, dezentralized waste
water treatment and water-recycling, environmental passport for buildings, selection of building materials based on ecological criteria

Holistic Ecological Concepts
At present there are five research assistants at
the chair supplemented by temporary staff
according to the research projects. About 50% of
the staff is financed by external funds.
Planning and Building without an ecological overall framework means to build
inadequately and in a non-sustainable way.

A planning systematic based on the cell model to
work out holistic overall concepts and to implement them in detail has been developed at the
chair.
The holistic concepts are built upon partial concepts such as energy, water, material, mobility,
open space, sociocultural aspects and economy.
A holistic concept is not only the sum of ist partial
concepts but rather their complex cooperation.
General objective is “urban scape”; this means
the built cultural landscape including cities,
wherein natural and technical cycles function in
the sense of sustainability.

The study program at the Bauhaus University is
providing a combination of fundamental knowledge and advanced studies. Together they lead
to the development of integrated concepts:
In the field of research, ecological building has
been implemented in many and diverse projects,
reaching from the individual building and its
evaluation by using the building passport to the
development of settlements.
Fundamentals (3 ECTS-CP)
Ecological Building I -Concepts for Buildings (6 ECTS-CP)
Ecological Building II -Concepts for Urban Space (6 ECTS-CP)
Project work is an essential component.

Contact
Concerning advanced studies the chair is involved in the correspondence course “Ecobau 24”
of the Ökozentrum NRW Hamm and is in charge
of the attendence course “Fachplaner
Ökologisches Bauen” offered by the Thuringian
Chamber of Architects.

Currently, the international Distance Learning
Master Course “Architecture and Environment”
is offered in cooperation with various universities
and is organized by the Wismar International Graduation Services GmbH (WINGS). Therefor the
internet platform www.ecobine.net has been developed with the support of the DBU. At the same
time the book “Ökologisches Bauen -- Von Grundlagen zu Gesamtkonzepten” provides a practiceoriented framework for ecological building.
