THE SOURCE Box 123, Lindsay, ON K9V 4R8 telephone: (705) 324-0707 www.kawarthalakesfoodsource.ca [email protected] http://www.facebook.com/KawarthaLakesFoodSource Volume 10, Issue 2 MARCH 2012 KAWARTHA LAKES FOOD SOURCE IS CELEBRATING TEN YEARS OF SUPPORTING THOSE WHO FEED OUR HUNGRY In September 2000, members of the Rotary Club of Lindsay began to focus on two serious issues facing many people in the City of Kawartha Lakes. They listened to community concerns, through its membership and guest speakers, about growing demands at local food banks or food cupboards. Through its research, it substantiated some anxiety that food banks had about acquiring consistent supplies They found that many of the rural communities had been operating food banks or food cupboards through churches, but the demand for help was exceeding the supply of food donations and they were largely working in isolation from each other. A plan evolved to help develop a continuous flow of food items to food bank centres allowing the front-line volunteers in each community to continue to offer assistance to those requiring it, in a personal and dignified manner. Input from more than 23 individuals from across the City worked on developing a warehouse concept where the intake and sorting of large amounts of food could then be made available to be accessed by local food banks. The new warehouse opened its doors on March 4th, 2002. Please join KLFS for all or some of our planned Anniversary celebrations. Page 2 THE SOURCE TOPS are tops with KLFS! Page 3 THE SOURCE The 10th annual Pasta Challenge And the winner is….. L.C.V.I. Lindsay Collegiate & Vocational Institute won the 10 th Annual Pasta challenge by contributing 4,082 boxes of macaroni and cheese. In an incredibly close second place contest, Fenelon Falls Secondary School narrowly beat I.E. Weldon. The challenge pits the four Kawartha Lakes high schools against each other to see which can collect the most boxed macaroni and cheese dinner for the Kawartha Lakes Food Source. Results are adjusted by population to allow for a fair comparison between larger and smaller schools. Students at L.C.V.I. collected 4.643 boxes per student while Fenelon Falls S.S. students collected 2.133 boxes per student, with I.E. Weldon – last year’s winner – came in at 2.094. Overall, the four schools amassed an impressive 8,612 boxes of macaroni and cheese, which will be distributed on a fair share basis to the Food Source’s member agencies, allowing them to spend their limited cash on other items needed by the families they serve. The tenth annual Pasta Challenge ran from Feb. 13 to Feb. 27. St. Thomas Aquinas S.S. also participated and decided to donate $332 to purchase margarine & milk – key ingredients to cook the pasta. The winning school receives a trophy — topped with a bright red tomato — to display for a year.
