Union League
Boys & Girls Clubs
Founded on December 26, 1919.
Became an Affiliate Member of
the Boys & Girls Clubs of America
on February 23, 1920.
Safe Place for Youth
In 1919, Club One in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood provided a safe
place for a young man who had lost his father as World War I came
to an end in Europe.
Ninety-five years later, a female high school student at Club Two finds
a place to safely assert herself as a leader among her peers through
community service and a young boy at our Barreto Club feels free to
pursue his interest in science without fear of being ridiculed by the
“cool” kids at his school.
Our staff takes the time to ensure our youth keep up with their
classes and provide educational enrichment opportunities beyond
what is available at their schools. Our vision is that each one of our
club members is on track to graduate from high school with a plan
for the future.
We help youth prepare to reach their full potential. Thanks to the
generous support of our donors and our programming partners,
the youth of the Union League Boys & Girls Clubs have the
opportunity to succeed in life and to find their voices in the world.
We offer more than 12,900 members of the Union League Boys &
Girls Clubs, a safe place where they are free to explore their interests
and build confidence.

More kids, more often.
This simple statement is a fundamental objective for our
organization which, when achieved, will profoundly impact our youth, communities and city.
As I reflect on 2014, I am most proud that our seven Boys and Girls Clubs in Chicago served an
average of 1,407 youth each day. This is an increase of 17% over 2013 and a 45% increase over
the past three years. I believe our growing daily attendance is a testament to the value our youth
and their families place on the quality of the programming we provide and the fact that we provide
it in a safe place where they do not feel threatened. I offer my thanks to our donors, volunteers,
partners and staff for making this possible. Under the leadership of our CEO Mary Ann Mahon
Huels, our foundation continues to be a model for the entire Boys and Girls Clubs movement.
We entered 2015 guided by a new strategic plan, Vision 20/20. It challenges us to touch the lives
of 15,000 children each year and to serve at least 1,800 youth each day by the year 2020. We will
seek to expand our footprint in Chicago’s underserved south side. Across all of our clubs, we
hope to serve more kids, more often by continuing to offer programs and services that attract their
interests and sustain their engagement. We will strive to become a leading Boys and Girls Club
organization by measuring outcomes consistently and credibly.
I am pleased to report that in March 2015, we took the important, first steps toward achieving the
promise of Vision 20/20 by opening two new school-based sites on the city’s south side: one in the
Englewood community and another in South Lawndale. Through these sites, we are reaching out
to support a whole new group of Chicago youth and are helping them to envision and prepare for
a positive future. We also began our second year of programming at the Cook County Temporary
Juvenile Detention Center, providing much needed assistance to some of our city’s most at-risk
children.
I hope each of you will continue to support our efforts to make a difference in the lives of our kids.
Whether it involves your time, talent or financial support, we appreciate all that you do for Union
League Boys and Girls Clubs. In the coming year I urge each of you make a special effort to procure
a new partner, assist another ULC member to become engaged with us or volunteer for an event
or activity you haven’t done before. I can guarantee you it will change your life.

During this past year,
we truly embodied the mission statement, “To enable all young
people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, responsible
and caring citizens“. As I reflect on the service of our organization to the youth of some of
Chicago’s most difficult neighborhoods, “especially those who need us most” resonates.
I recall the brutal winter weather and how even though schools were not in session, our Boys &
Girls Clubs remained open with extended hours, enabling parents and guardians to make their way
to work without worrying about what their children were up to and who they were with. Our Boys
& Girls Club Members enjoyed their regular programs, and spent quality time learning and having
structured fun, instead of remaining idle at home. We were there when they needed us.
Our award-winning Science Program allowed the kids to explore new skills, including growing their
own food. Through after-school and summer literacy, science, and mathematics programs, we are
fostering academic success among the young people we serve providing them with resources they
wouldn’t otherwise have access to.
The warm and healthy meals and snacks we provided throughout the year through our partnership
with the Chicago Food Depository were often the best meal of the day for our Club members.
We provided 36 college scholarships, totaling $80,000, for teens graduating from high school with
a plan for their future.
We are providing hope and opportunity for those who need us most. My thanks to each and every
one of you who make that possible.

“The doors to the Club have always been open

“I felt accepted the moment I became a member.
The ULBGC helped me when I needed them most
particularly when I had to fill the void, pain and

Dove Self-Esteem Project
Our Club Two Boys & Girls Club hosted a self-esteem workshop for more
than ninety young women. Funded by Dove Brands, a division of Unilever,
the Dove Self-Esteem Project is designed to ensure that young girls can
grow up enjoying a positive self-image and become empowered to fulfill
their full potential.
Professional women with a wide variety of careers volunteered to share
personal reflections and testimonials at the workshop which offered the
young women strategies for developing strong body confidence.

Samsung Tween Tech Lounge
In November, corporate partner Samsung unveiled a new state-of-the-art technology center
at our Club One Boys & Girls Club. One of only ten centers of its kind across the country, the
center seeks to engage the interest of ten to twelve year olds in science, technology engineering
and math topics.
The center is equipped with twenty Samsung tablets that have been pre-loaded with more
than 1,000 Scholastica software selections. Our program staff leads the Tween group through
a rigorous ten-week program of exploration.
“The Club helped me build important computer skills. I’ll never forget learning how to
type, creating my first PowerPoint or editing photos with PhotoShop. These skills have
given me confidence to work toward reaching my long-term goals.” - CLUB ONE MEMBER
Barreto Learning Center
School day afternoons, our Barreto staff provides
middle-school aged club members with math instruction programs of the Kahn Academy. Utilizing practice
exercises, instructional videos and personalized learning
dashboards, young learners are empowered to study
at their own pace and without fear of being
made fun of because they don’t know
the right answers. Student progress
is tracked and learning gaps are
identified and addressed.

Healthy Eating
Feeding the mind and body
With the help of the Chicago Food Depository and the gifts of generous donors, we are able to offer our members
a nutritious after-school meal. For many club members the food they enjoy at their Boys & Girls Club is their only
source of meaningful nutrition outside of school. When one considers that many of our youth eat their last meals
of the day at school at noon, the late afternoon meal at the clubs is a vital part of their well-being.

RBI: Reviving Baseball In Inner Cities
With the very generous support of Cubs Care, a Fund of the McCormick
Foundation, we offer a Junior- and Senior-level RBI program. Each year, 300
young men develop baseball skills and good fitness and practice habits through
the RBI program. It has been a gateway for dozens of participants to qualify for
college baseball scholarships.
The RBI Program is enhanced by the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation’s Badges for
Baseball program. The program brings together officers of the U.S. Marshals’
Office, FBI, Chicago Police Department and Chicago Fire Department to provide
structured mentorship to our players.
“If it wasn’t for the RBI program, I wouldn’t have the opportunity to play
organized baseball; my parents are gone and I couldn’t pay the fees.
After three years, I’m not only playing, I’m the captain of the team.”

“I love Camp! I get to meet new people,
go swimming every day. I love learning
new things at Camp!”
– CLUB ONE CAMPER
Camp
Fun Safe Place to Build Memories
Over the past 90 years, the Union League Boys & Girls Club Camp has provided more than 50,000 young
people a chance to experience the pastoral freedom of the 247 acres of rolling hills and woodlands that
surround beautiful Lake Francis in Salem, Wisconsin.
The Camp is one of only seven of its kind nationwide and offers over
1,000 campers each summer a chance to engage in outdoor camping,
campfire ceremonies, storytelling, arts and crafts, drama, music, boating
and fishing. Campers also learn about environmental awareness,
leadership and teambuilding. After a week at camp, youth return home
with new skills and new friends. For many, the camp experience is
transformational.
“The reason why I love Camp is because the food is good.
We have to work by ourselves in the cabin, which makes us
more responsible. The staff does a good job protecting us.
Nurse Amy is a good nurse!”
– CLUB ONE CAMPER
Military Youth Program
In recent years, we have partnered with the USO and the United States
Military to provide a camp getaway for more than 300 youth whose
mothers and/or fathers have been deployed in defense of our nation.
Special thanks to the Union League Club’s American Legion Post 758
and United States Army, Air Force and Navy for helping to fund these
special camper experiences.

Making A
Difference
Associate Board
Associate Board members are Chicago-area professionals who share a common
interest in making a difference in the life of a young person. By generously donating
their time and talents in support of the at-risk youth we serve, Associate Board
members become a very real example of what it means to be a productive,
responsible and caring member of a community.
Associate Board members enhance the club experience for youth through their
mentorship, homework help and career and college guidance. Some build
relationships with our youth through sports and recreation.
This past year, the Associate Board members and their friends organized a 3 on 3
basketball tournament at our Clemente Club, hosted holiday parties and bought
gifts for hundreds of our club members, and coordinated unique experiences and
field trips.
Associate Board members are making a difference and, together, are changing lives.
We are grateful for all of the ways they support the kids we serve.

Youth of the Year
Congratulations to Mario Flores of the
Clemente Club, our 2015 Youth of the Year.
Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys &
Girls Club member can achieve. The annual Youth of
the Year Dinner celebrates the success of youth who have
overcome enormous odds to demonstrate exceptional
character, leadership among their peers and academic
accomplishment.
The dreams of our candidates come alive at the dinner as
they present the speeches they have prepared.

This past year, Trustee Lynne
Rinkoski and her husband
Timothy generously chose to
become Heritage Society
Benefactors as they included the
Union League Boys & Girls Clubs
in their estate plans.
“Our immediate family is just Lynne and I. We believe that giving back and sharing
is an important aspect to our success. The Union League Boys & Girls Clubs offer
us the opportunity to reach out and give back to others that need these similar
opportunities. What the club provides to these children is just as important as
parents providing a college education to their children. Being able to allow children
to grow up and develop in a safe environment is so important and our support
hopefully will help a few of them.” - Lynne & Timothy Rinkoski
The enduring gifts of Heritage Society members like Lynne and Timothy
have a dramatic impact on the lives and futures of the youth served by
our Boys & Girls Clubs.
“…visionary individuals of differing perspectives and ages have each reached the
conclusion that supporting our Boys & Girls Clubs and the children is a vital social
investment.” - Kenneth L. Means, Honorary Chairman of the Heritage
Society as it was being formed in 2002
