PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Metamorphosis – renew, refresh and
recharge for the Club
T he Annual General Meeting (AGM) took place on Sunday,
11 May. It was the time where our Management Committee
(MC) presented the report cards for our financial achievements
and services rendered to the Club and members for the work
done in the last financial year. The MC was glad to have
received many good words and appreciation during the AGM.
I am indeed humbled to receive the members’ mandate, to
be re-elected as the President for another term. The other six
MC members who returned unopposed are Mr William Lum,
Mr Jonathan Wang, Mr David Chung, Mr Gerad Loo, Mr Gary
Oon and Mr Simon Ong. Mr Ong, who had been the tennis
convenor, is a new management committee member in the
incumbent team. On behalf of the Management Committee,
I thank all members for your support and your endorsement
for our work.
I like to express my sincere appreciation to the out-going
Vice-President Mr Philip Chua, and MC member Mr Krishan
Kashyap, for helping in the past Management Committee’s
work. We thank both of them for their valuable contributions
to the growth and development of the Club.
As to the immediate past MC members who came forward
to serve for another term in the Management Committee, I
sincerely appreciate your volunteerism and will certainly look
forward to tap on your collective wisdom and expertise.
We have decided to appoint/rotate new Chairperson for
the various sub-committees as I believe this will provide an
opportunity for MC to enrich its bench strength, and for MC
to add fresh perspective and create new interest to other
areas. Hopefully overtime, we will have multiple MCs capable
of discharging various sub-committee functions, and this will
benefit the Club to run more efficiently.
As the Chairpersons for the various sub-committees have
been appointed, we welcome members to come forward to
serve and contribute in the respective sub-committees.
Looking forward, we stay in line with our vision to be
“The Premier Family
Club where the People
make the Difference”.
We aim to position the
Club to a higher level
with the newly renovated
facilities, exciting members’
events and activities,
improvements in service
standards and more
choices in dining outlets; as a comfortable and vibrant place
for our members.
The Cabana Kitchen will soon be opened after an aesthetic
retrofitting. It lingers with an open-concept, European casual
dining coupled with a rustic charm. This cosy outlet serves
Western cuisine with focus on Belgium mussels and beers
to whet your appetite. We value our little ones and have
meticulously planned the kids’ friendly menu with a selection
of gelato, waffles, pop-corns, ice-cream and candy floss.
Adults too, can chill-out at the bar counter with your favourite
alcoholic drinks. A spacious dance area is scrupulously
designed where you can immerse yourselves into the upbeat
of the music and dance the night away.
The Peranakan Night will be back on Friday, 1 August. Our
events team has lined up exciting programmes for the night
that included barang barang fair at the atrium, Peranakan
buffet prepared by Chef Baba Jolly, best dressed Kabaya
competition and all things Peranakan.
Last but not least, as we continue to build upon what we
have and to make it better, it is with heartfelt thanks for your
continuous support that draws us close to the vision of the
Club.

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE
Servanthood & Servitude
T he word servant simply means one who serves othersbe it a public servant or one that performs duties in the
home of a master or personal employer. Servants in
the past were mostly treated with respect and dignity
– even for the lowly domestic helper or the “majie”* of
a bygone era. I know of families who kept in touch with
their “majies” long after they had retired and returned
to their home village in China. One boss, whom I know,
personally tended to her “majie” from hospital to grave
when the latter in her old age had no one to return home
to. Such was the respect and dignity that the master or
mistress in this case accorded to one who had served her
for many years. Such was the bond.
We seem to have hit a snag with servanthood these
days. There is this erroneous expectation that servants
have to be servile and they invariably became a convenient
target of abuse. I was amused and sadly disturbed at the
same time when a member reasoned that because our
staff salary are derived from members’ subscriptions,
hence staff are obliged to salute them each time they
meet. She summed up in her own words “… because
(as their pay master) we are bigger than them mah”.
She was then complaining to me about a staff who was
answering a phone call and did not acknowledge her as
the staff hurried past.
From the bouquets and brickbats I received on our
service staff, I spotted one recurring complaint where
members sometimes claimed that the food was not to
their taste and would make uncalled for caustic remarks
such as “This food is only fit for the dogs!” It baffles the
staff how one such member would return time and again
for the same order and continues her tirade.
A member bellowed as to why members have to help
themselves to condiments and plates at The Palms and
why do our staff run around looking busy always. The
labour crunch is a real problem, not cooked up to excuse
ourselves from the ideal service standard. One 6-star
hotel had to resort to
serving
semi-buffet
lunch. A popular F&B
outlet at Changi Airport
no longer takes orders
at the table and request
customers to take their
own condiments and
cutlery.
Does
servanthood
mean servitude? Is it
any wonder then that
our Labour Chief, Mr Lim Swee Say in his recent May
Day speech had to call for a nation of better customers?
Whilst this may seem to be an appalling national problem,
it is fortunately not so bleak in our Club. The majority
of the members we encounter daily are gracious and
appreciative people who always have an encouraging
word for our staff and are quick to forgive. However, it
takes only a little yeast to leaven the whole lump. The
minority have a choice. They can choose civility.
It was reported in the Sunday Times of 4 May 2014,
what employers are doing to face the manpower crunch.
We are doing our best to address the issue and to maintain
an acceptable service standard. Members’ understanding
and support would help us achieve that. A gentle word,
a little more patience and the correction that those who
provide service should be servile, would go a long way to
provide that respect and dignity which should be mutual,
always.
Your humble servant.

SSC Inter-Team Badminton Competition 2014
Falcon claws its way to Champion!
by RAHMAT SUKIMAN
T his year’s Inter-Team Badminton Competition kicked
off on the 3 April with a big bang.
Inaugurated in 1989, it was Tan Jit How who pioneered
his team to victory. Since then, it was held annually till
2002, when it went into obscurity for seven years for no
apparent reason! It was revived in 2009 and continued
on till this day.
Support from the ad hoc sub-committee members, the
admin staff and participants were very strong indeed! The
Competition needed only 48 participants but the entries
were over-subscribed to a whopping 61!
Each of the 4 teams were named after birds of prey,
namely; Eagle (in blue), Falcon (green), Hawk (red) and
Osprey (orange). Team-name printed on the back of their
respective T shirts.
Each team’s 15 players were ranked in order of merit
