PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Happy Birthday, Singapore!
O nce
again, August is the time of the year when the
island is abuzz with pulsating beat as we approach
Singapore’s 49th National Day celebration. In 1966,
Singapore celebrated its 9 August National Day for the
first time. The picturesque fireworks and the aerial flypast
by the Singapore Armed Forces during the parade is a
sight not to be missed.
Similarly, Singapore Swimming Club (SSC) has come a
long way since six swimming enthusiasts got together at
the end of 1893 to start a swimming club. Over 121 years,
SSC has evolved into a family club of 8,000 accounts
comprising seniors, families, term and junior members.
We are nearing the completion of development work in
the Club; the retrofitting and corrective work will enhance
the Club further.
To add new dining options to the Club, the new Cabana
has opened its doors to members in July, just in time for
National Day Celebrations on 9th August. Chef Deo, who
is from Mauritius, has put together a scrumptious menu
targeting kids, young executives and those young at
heart. It will be a full-day carnival with gelato, popcorn,
candy floss, an array of mussels and Western menu.
Entertainment programs will include a DJ who will spin
the latest songs, games, face painting, street juggling act
and even meeting iron-man! Do register and join us for
this fun-filled event.
We have rolled out the new Palms menu to whet
your appetite. From listening to your feedback, we have
retained some favourite dishes such as the Silver Fish
Fried Rice and Beef Hor Fun. Satay can be ordered by
half a dozen and we meticulously added Asian food to
the kids’ choice. Don’t miss the new crispy pumpkin balls
and pair the dish with beer. It’s simply gorgeous! We are
indeed pleased with the positive feedback from members
on our Chef’s good culinary skills.
At D’Sports and D’Tanjong, our football fans have
faithfully followed the screening of the 2014 FIFA World
Cup till the final match. The
ambience at the screening
venue was delightful and it
was good to see so many likeminded members mingling and
watching the games despite
the time zone difference.
Lastly, on the operations
front, if you are looking for a
retail business outlet, we have
a floor space of approximately
1,329 square feet for lease
at the North Wing area. It is
situated on the second level with full height glass windows
overlooking a magnificent pool. The venue is ideal for retail
or a bar lounge. Do contact the Club if you are interested
to view it and explore further.
On our Nation’s birthday, may we come together and
move forward and progress with Singapore. I wish you all
the best for a happy National Day.

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE
Season of Restoration
I n my recent holiday I stayed in what was formerly a row
of dilapidated shop houses painstakingly restored to its
once upon a time glory. It was in my opinion an exquisite
piece of art in itself but comfort wise it could not match
the contemporary hotels as it had not originally been
designed to serve as a hotel. I also dined in a family run
Peranakan restaurant which was originally a Peranakan
house. It was no humble hearth but was a well restored
piece of cultural heritage which the owner and his family
still lived in at the time of our visit. The owner told me
that he had spent a fortune on the restoration and had
run out of funds when it came to replacing the wooden
door with its intricate carvings. He settled for a similar
floral designed metal door as replacement. Though it is
not of the same design as the interior, it could pass as the
original to the casual observer and it served its purpose
nonetheless.
Our corrective work for the Cabana and the Multi-storey
car park (MSCP) is drawing to an end. This corrective
work is also very much a restorative work too – to restore
the affected building and structures to their function as
originally intended. As you enjoy your meals, you may
now hear the shrieks of delight from the children enjoying
the weekend children programs our Social Department
has in place for them at The Cabana. If the process of
getting the Temporary Occupation Permit (TOP) goes as
planned the MSCP should be fully operational latest by
middle of November 2014, depending on how soon the
relevant authorities respond.
I have a deep admiration and respect for the restorer
– whether it is for a prized painting or a piece of cultural
heritage like the restored shop house I stayed in for my
holiday and the Little Kitchen I dined at. The restorer
needs to have patience and a clear vision of the desired
outcome amidst the howl of opinions that he and his team
hear along the way. The restorer also needs the courage
to know that while he and his team can do their best
within the constraint
of time and resources
there will still be sharp
criticism instead of
appreciation. The arm
chair critics can easily
pulverize a wonderful
piece of restored work
with a stroke of their
pen or with some
prejudicial comments.
In most cases however,
the gratification for the restorer lies in the simple joy of
seeing happy faces of people who are able to enjoy the
functionality of the restored work.
It has been a long and arduous two-year journey for
members of the Development Committee (DC 612) and
the Management Committee. They pored over reams
of documents and site plans, consulted the experts and
went through the stringent process of evaluating the best
way forward to arrive at where we are today. To say it
was not an easy task is truly an understatement - but they
have done it. I take my hat off to them for their tenacity
and drive.
What lies ahead to make this a more comprehensive
restorative work is the restoration of frayed relationships.
Restoring trust and emotion is certainly a more challenging
task than repairing inanimate buildings. I hope with the
restored Cabana and MSCP, it will also begin the healing
of hurt and disappointment. When that healing process
begins it will perfect even the most imperfect work. So let
the season of restoration continue.
Happy National Day!

Aloha! A Hawaiian Themed Fashion Night: 20 June
Rolling good times for a
Hawaiian themed party
by DORINN CHIN
A loha!! Do you know it is the most used Hawaiian word
meaning ‘’Hello’’ and ‘’Goodbye’’?!
Aloha also means affection, peace and compassion.
Definitely, Hawaiian Night at the D’Tanjong is more than
just gorgeous ladies in sun dresses and gentlemen in hula
shirts.
During the party, our fun-loving members and guests
flashed their Hawaiian tunes and participated actively
in the beer drinking, Hula Dress Up and Limbo Rock
competitions. Members and guests gathered around at
the Beer Pong Station to sink ping pong balls into glasses
to win complimentary mugs of Tiger Beer!
Beautiful ladies never fail to steal the show as the leggy
female models paraded around in leis and sunny outfits,
bringing the crowd to a virtual tour at the Hawaii beach!

The Glenlivet Whisky Appreciation Night: 6 June
The single malt that started
it all!
by MANDY LAM
I t was a close-knit event as 40 members and guests attended the Glenlivet
Whisky Appreciation Night. Mr Rajan Menon, Brand Ambassador from Pernod
Ricard Singapore, gave a short brief on the origins and unique characteristics of
the Glenlivet single malt whisky and how food enhances the flavors of scotch.
Three lucky winners walked away with a bottle of premium Glenlivet single
malt whisky at the end of the night. All had a roaring great time and our
participants had new found friends when they mingled during the event.
World Cup Screening at D’Sports and D’Tanjong
The FIFA World Cup
by DORINN CHIN
S occer mania has landed in Singapore Swimming Club.
Once quiet by night, the Club bustled with activities in
D’ Tanjong at the wee hours of 14 July (3am local time).
The spirit was high among our members as finals of the
intriguing game drew close. Yes, the much anticipated
match between Argentina and Germany.
23-year old German footballer Mario Gotze, dashed
the dreams of South Americans when his 113th minute
goal, triumph at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium. In
that second, the boy who was born in Southern German
town of Memmingen, changed the world’s history. Lionel
Messi, star player of Argentina, could not savage the
situation with a free kick.
The sighs and cheers of the audiences here in
D’ Tanjong were obvious. In a time like this, we felt
togetherness for a world event.
This is Germany’s fourth world cup title and the victory
celebrated by all the supporters and fan.

1-Day Yong Peng Durian Tour: 12 July
Meeting with the King!
by MOHD NAZRI
D urian never fails us with its reputation as King of Fruits.
The response for the one-day Yong Peng tour was
spontaneous. At dawn, 40 participants began the
excursion to Yong Peng across the Straits of Johore.
As an ice-breaker to start the day, we had a sumptuous
breakfast, Nasi Lemak. Following the journey, there were
a few pit-stops. We gained knowledge about mushrooms
at the Mushroom Bio Tech; tasted and learnt about birds’
nest at the Ecolite Biotech Manufactory Sdn Bhd. Some of
us had good bargain with the bird’s nest purchase, which
is known as delicacy for nourishment and good skin.
It was all the worth for a two hours’ drive when we
reached our destination. In anticipation, smiles flashed
on durian lovers as different grades of durians were
served right before them. It was a ‘’Eat-All-You-Can
Durian Feast’’; coupled with Queen of Fruits, Mangosteen
and Rambutan. Everyone chatted and gave their opinions
on durians and elaborated on the goodness of the fruit. It
was not an over-statement as we all agreed it was one of
the best lunches we ever had!
10 SPLASH august / september 2014
The next pit-stop was Yo-Yo Native Food Product,
where our participants purchased local food items at
the store. Needless to say, we mercilessly stocked up
the shopping bags. We had the opportunity to taste the
famous Muar Otak, another distinct dish in Yong Peng.
This was followed by shopping at Tebrau and a delightful
Seafood dinner in Permas Jaya at Sin Hui Bin Chinese
Restaurant.
The trip was well planned and participants had so
much fun.

It’s Wine O’ Clock. Say Cheese!: 11 July
Says cheese, it’s wine pairing time!
by MANDY LAM
T he over-whelming turn up of 80
members with guests was definitely
not something we had prepared
ourselves. Nonetheless, it was a
happy problem to house so many
people in the Grand Ballroom for the
Wine O’ Clock Say Cheese event on a
relaxing Friday night.
Participants learnt about wine
pairing and savour the taste with
selection of cheese and a buffet
dinner. Special thanks to our suppliers
Beam Global, Certain Cellars, Giorgio
Ferrari and Auri Pacific for a good array
of wine choices during the night.

total of 40 swimmers had more than the routine
swimming training from the Fun Swim Camp from 2 to

nine years old participated in a meaningful swim camp to
engage, encounter and enrich themselves.
The campers came from two programmes; the Learn

professional dance teacher Sisy to teach the kids K-pop
dance steps, which was truly an ice-breaker.
Programmes included swimming training, trophy
making session, visit to the Singapore Discovery Centre,
S.E.A. Aquarium at Resort World Sentosa and many more
activities to train the young mind to think out of the box,
creativity and independence while they bond.

Interview with Christopher Cheong
Christopher writes history in swimming chapter
by CONSTANCE LOW
S PLASH: When did you first started swimming? How
did you enter into competitive swimming and was
there a reasons for it?
CC: At the age of 4, I enrolled into the learn to swim
programme here at SSC. Around the age of 9, I entered
competitively not with any particular reason but because
it was normal for a swimmer to progress into competition
as he/she moved on in the swimming programme.
SPLASH: What is your next goal and how do you plan
to achieve it?
CC: Getting an individual medal at the SEA Games. More
training, training smart and well.
SPLASH: You have participated in international
swimming competitions. Which one is the most
memorable to you and why?
CC: All of them are unique experiences and memorable in
their own ways but if I’d had to pick one it’ll probably be
the 2013 SEA Games held in Myanmar. That was the one
meet where I learnt how to really hone my race skills and
expose myself to the immense stress of the media and
competition. The memories made with the team there are
also truly unforgettable.
SPLASH: Among your peers, you have achieved a
good number of awards; both local and international,
are you proud of your achievements?
CC: Definitely. I never thought I’d be able to come this
far in my swimming career to begin with so what I’m
achieving now is far beyond past expectations and I’m
certainly proud of how far I’ve come.
SPLASH: Who is the greatest influence in your life and
why?
CC: There isn’t one person in particular and I don’t think
it’ll be fair to say one person influenced me the most.
From my family to my coach to my peers, all of them
added their own touch to influencing how I live and how
things turned out. I guess without them I’d truly not be
anywhere I am today.
SPLASH: How often do you train? Was there any point
of time you had considered quitting swimming?
CC: When training for a major competition training could
go up to 10 times a week and my coach is trying to
increase that number as well due to my lack of strength.
When I felt like quitting swimming was before I started to
win medals. I recall at 15 I hadn’t made it to the finals of
the school nationals yet. It was about that period where I
felt that continuing wouldn’t be practical at all. Currently
amidst all the stress from school and swimming combined,
I’d feel daunted at times but not so much wanting to quit.

Interview with Malcolm Low
Malcolm shares his
swimming story
by CONSTANCE LOW
S PLASH: How did you start swimming and eventually
enter the Singapore Sports School?
ML: I first learn swimming with a sole purpose of being
water safe and soon I got more interested in it and started
to train competitively.
Entering sports school was a tough choice but I was
glad that I enrolled there as it helped me balance my
sports and studies.
L-R: Head Coach Yuan Zao Yu, Malcom Low and Coach Fang Hai Jiao
(Singapore Sports School).
SPLASH:What do you consider as the greatest
achievement for your competitive swimming till date?
ML: Making the Final of the Fina Arena World Cup held
in Singapore would be my greatest achievement as I was
able to race with world class swimmers.
SPLASH: What is your next goal and your plans to
achieve it?
ML: To make the SEA Games next year. I got a lot to work
on and definitely need to improve on my butterfly which is
my weakest stroke as my main target event is the 400IM.
SPLASH: What is your advice to other swimmers or
those amateurs who like to enter into competitive
swimming?
ML: Follow your passion, prepare to train hard, stay focus,
never give up and most importantly enjoy the process.
SPLASH: If you are not into competitive swimming,
where do you think you will be at this point in life?
ML: Competitive swimming has moulded me to be a more
disciplined person. I have learned to accept defeats and
bounced back. With less free time, I have to manage my
time properly so that I can still excel in my studies. Hence,
if I am not into competitive swimming, I will be probably
lazing around.
SPLASH: How often do you train?
