rowing up in New Jersey, Tommy
Reid was fascinated by mafia history.
That is what drew him to the story
of Cleveland mafia legend Danny Greene.
That and all of his Cleveland friends from his
days as a college student at the Ohio State
University telling him about Danny Greene.
Reid’s documentary, “Danny Greene: The
Rise & Fall of the Irishman,” sold out seven
screenings at the 35th Cleveland International
Film Festival.
Reid’s documentary about Danny Greene
was based on a book written by Lyndhurst
Police Lieutenant Rick Porrello. During last
year’s festival, Reid met [and talked with]
Porrello and Phil Christopher, the subject of
Porrello’s book – “Superthief: A Master
Burglar, the Mafia and the Biggest Bank
Heist in U.S. History.”
“[Phil Christopher and I] had a good
chemistry,” says Reid who was attracted to
the story after “learning that this was the most
successful super crime in history.”
“Superthief: Inside America’s Biggest Bank
Score” tells the story of Collinwood native
Phil Christopher and how he masterminded
the burglary of $30 million in Laguna Nigel,
California, in 1972. As Reid points out, “$30
million back then is like $100 million today.”
The film also tells the story of how the
crime was solved. Reid notes that law enforcement was brilliant in their efforts to solve
this masterful crime. He explains how the
perseverance of the FBI and Cleveland Police
was key in the solving of Christopher’s super
crime. “It took them six to eight months
before they started getting any clues.”
Reid says that Christopher’s story is “great
history – the kind of American history I am

drawn to.” But the story is also a story about
Cleveland – a city whose history and people
Reid has a healthy respect for. He loves the
way everyone he meets has some kind of
personal connection to the subject.
“It is always interesting to see how
passionate Clevelanders are all around the
country,” he says. “They are born and raised
there and move somewhere, but they always
have a sense of pride in Cleveland, which is
to me, amazing.”

That’s What Friends are For
:
hen stage actress Caris Corfman
started acting a little strange, her
friends Gaylen Ross and Rebecca
Nelson figured it was just “actor’s unemployment
blues.”
Caris was diagnosed with a brain tumor that
required several surgeries and a long recovery.
The surgery had many medical consequences,
including a loss of her short-term memory.
Caris’ talent wasn’t gone, but getting back on
stage felt impossible, says Ross.
So Ross and Nelson decided to document
Caris’ journey, on film, in order to help her
reconnect with the outside world. It would be a
fun project – with no “expectation that we had
a story larger than this friendship.”
Ross, who both shot and directed the film,
continues: “We would go have dinner or to a
movie, and come back and do some filming …
or not.” The three did “all of the kinds of things
we would normally do as friends,” says Ross.
Filming was just a part of their day; never the
sole reason for getting together.
Some very low points in Caris’ life were
captured in the process. At times, Caris used the
camera to vent her anger and frustration. “One
of the reasons that Caris wanted us to film her,”
says Ross, “was that she got to speak for herself.”
Eventually, with the help of friend and theater
director Brad Watkins, Caris returned to the
stage in a one-woman show. “It was incredible
seeing her step lightly back on the stage as
though she had never left it,” says Nelson, the
film’s co-director.
Still, it wasn’t easy
for Caris. “Could
you go on stage with
no short-term
memory?” asks
Nelson. “One of
the hardest things
… was watching
Caris struggle with
the frustrations of
rehearsal. Seeing her
angry at herself for
not being able to
remember a move or
a bit of stage business, &DULV&RUIPDQPDNHDUHPDUNDEOH

for example, was
EUDLQVXUJHU\
difficult.”
Nelson also remembers that Caris would
use those frustrating moments to get all of her
friends laughing again. She would get her
concentration back and take command of the
stage, just as any trained actress would do.
Caris’ story, from frustration to triumph, has
captivated audiences. Ross says audiences describe
the film as “pure joy.” They are surprised that
they come away with that experience knowing
how difficult the subject matter appears. Ross
credits Caris’ charm, wit and courage. “Audiences
come out of this film uplifted and hopeful,
without it being a ‘sentimental experience.’”
