The West Hills College Lemoore graduation ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, May 27 at 6:30
p.m. on campus. The ceremony will include the presentation of the Spirit of the Eagle Award awarded to
college backer, Lynda Lahodny. The guest speaker
will be Vice Chancellor Barry Russell from the California Community College Chancellor’s Office.
WHCL president Don Warkentin will introduce
the speakers including Christopher Leach, represent-
ing the Class of 2010. Stephanie Droker, Academic
Senate President, will present the academic senate
awards and Vice president Sylvia Dorsey-Robinson
will address the students.
Vice president Dave Bolt will award the degrees
while Jose Lopez reads the names. Mark McKean,
President, West Hills Community College District
Board of Trustees, will present the diplomas.
The NAS Lemoore graduation ceremony is
scheduled for 2 p.m. at the base theater on May 27.
West Hills College Coalinga will celebrate its
graduates on Friday, May 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the
Coalinga High School football stadium. Ambassador
Phillip Sanchez will speak at the ceremony and the
Alumnus of the Year, Dr. Marlon Hall, will be honored at the ceremony.
This year is the first year that the West Hills College Lemoore Nursing Program will have a pinning
ceremony on Saturday, May 29 at 1 p.m. at the Hanford Civic Auditorium.

Cardoza is active in student government and frequently serves as photographer for campus events while
Hardin is editor of the student newspaper. The Screamin’ Eagle and Johnson, active in student government, is
noted for her gospel singing.
More than $15,000 in scholarships was presented to 38 students
during the ceremonies.
a local facilities bond for the college.
Measure E was passed in November 2008 and provided $31 million in
construction funds for new buildings
on campus. Coupled with the state
construction dollars, the college will
have over $100 million to build new
classrooms, a performing arts center,
field sports facilities, and an addition
to the administration building.
Lahodny played a major role in
the passage of this bond serving as
the co-chair of the bond campaign
committee,
Warkentin said Lahodny now
serves on the college’s bond oversight committee, which oversees the
spending of the bond proceeds. She
organized the business incubator
workshops that were held on campus
in support of local start up businesses
and she has also served on college
advisory committees including vocational programs.
She has also helped bring outside
events to the campus including the recent Pizza Festival.

Three areas of note for our
WHCL 2010 graduation
As we come to the close of the semester and the academic year,
everyone is busy preparing for graduation
ceremonies.
Three areas of note concerning graduation – this will be our last graduation
ceremony held outdoors, we graduate our
first class of Engineering Scholars, and our
first class of Registered Nurses.
With the completion of our new
Golden Eagle Arena next spring, we will
host the May 2011 commencement exercises indoors, which will allow us not to
worry about darkness, wind, rain or hot
weather. Eleven Engineering students are

graduating who have been recipients of our
scholars program that provided books and
tuition for four semesters.
Finally, on May 29 our nursing students graduate and receive their
pins during a formal ceremony at the Civic Auditorium in Hanford.
All events are a major accomplishment for our students. Go
Eagles!

WHC Coalinga graduation will honor WHCL’s Dr. Hall

The West Hills College Coalinga
graduation ceremony is slated for
Friday, May 28th at 6:30 p.m. in the
Coalinga High School football stadium.
Dr. Marlon Hall, associate dean
of educational services/night college
at West Hills College Lemoore, will
be honored as WHCC Alumnus of the
Year during the ceremony.
Dr. Hall has spent his entire
teaching career serving the students
of the San Joaquin Valley. He has
served as WHCL associate dean since
2005 and has been with WHC for almost 10 years. Prior to West Hills, Dr.
Marlon Hall taught and coached at
many schools in the Valley including
Chowchilla, Tranquillity, Central and
Fort Miller.
He also coached at Christian
schools in Fresno including Clovis Christian School and California
Christian College. He took the California Christian College men’s basketball team to a third place in the National Bible College Championship in
Dr. Marlon Hall, a familiar figure around the Lemoore campus will be
honored at this year’s WHCC graduation on May 27.

Dr. Hall taught and coached at
Fresno’s Roosevelt High School for
four years. His first two years, he was
the assistant varsity coach and the last
two years he was the varsity coach for
boys’ basketball. He took his team to
the North Yosemite League playoffs
twice and was Coach of the Year.
Dr. Hall graduated from Hales
Franciscan High School in Chicago in
1976. He made a two and a half day
trip on a bus to Coalinga after learning from a former classmate about
Coalinga College. He studied journalism and was the editor of The Merlin,
WHCC newspaper and worked on the
yearbook
In 1978, he graduated from West
Hills College and headed to West
Coast Christian College to continue
his studies in journalism and to play
basketball. West Coast didn’t have
all the classes for his major so he attended Fresno State at the same time.
He received his bachelor’s degree in
biblical studies from West Coast in
1981 and his second bachelor’s degree in journalism from Fresno State
in 1982.
Dr. Hall received two master’s
degrees, one in education administration from Fresno State and the other
in reading and English as a second
language from Fresno Pacific University. He followed with his doctorate
degree in education from Fielding
Graduate University.
Dr. Hall lives in Fresno with his
wife Mary who is a preschool teacher
at Ernie Pyle Elementary School in
Fresno.

Former U.S. Ambassador set as WHCC graduation speaker

Ambassador Phillip Sanchez,
who served as U.S. Ambassador
to Colombia and Honduras, will
be this year’s speaker at the West
Hills College Coalinga graduation.
The graduation ceremony is Friday,
May 28 at 6:30 p.m. Ambassador
Sanchez was selected by Hispanic
Business Magazine as one of “100
Most Influential Hispanics.”
Sanchez, the son of Spanishspeaking Mexican migrant workers, attended Coalinga College,
now West Hills College Coalinga
for one year.
After his first year, he was recruited by Fresno State to study
law. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in political science in
1952 and 1975 from Fresno State.
Sanchez also attended Pinedale Elementary and Clovis High
School.
Sanchez served as Fresno County’s chief administrative officer in
the 1960s. He was director of the
U.S. Office of Economic Opportunity (1971-73), U.S. ambassador to
Honduras (1973-75) and U.S. ambassador to Colombia (1975-77).
Sanchez was publisher of a large
daily Spanish-language newspaper
in New York City.
Ambassador Sanchez has served
on many boards including the Governing Board Cal State Community Colleges, Trustees of California
State Colleges and National Hispanic University
In May 2005, he retired and returned to Fresno to live with his
wife Juanita.

As Navy College 2010 graduation
is approaching, Navy College, the
schools, colleges, and universities are
busily engaged in the preparation for
this important event. The ceremony
on May 27 at 2 p.m. in the Base
Theater is only a week away.
The graduation commencement
has become one of the major
annual events on base. To ensure
everything goes well, Navy College
has scheduled weekly meetings to
scrutinize at the ceremony plan and
assign to schools preparation tasks
such as reserving and preparing
the base theater, arranging ushers
and entertainment, finalizing the
graduation list for each school,
program editing and printing,
arranging for guest passes, selecting
the school speakers, the award
luncheon, photography, logistics,
security, the reception etc… There
are literally hundreds of details,
vital to a smooth commencement
exercise. May 27 will be momentous
and historic.
For Naval Air Station Lemoore,
it will be holding one of the largest
graduation commencements in
the whole Navy College system.
For the local media, Navy College
graduation ceremony will be the
most important event in local area.
For Navy College it will be the
end result of much diligent planning
and work. For the students, it
culminates their high school, college,
or university studies. For the staff at
base schools, it will bring to an end
to months of meetings, reviews,
changes, co-ordinations, and cooperations. As graduation draws
near, we begin to recognize the depth
of commitment of all those working
hard toward its end. It is this time of
the year that the student’s academic
achievements, instructors’ teaching,
and staff’s hard work are recognized.
The Navy College Office, the
participating schools, and the
graduates are looking forward to the
grand graduation fiesta. Join us on
May 27 to honor and to celebrate
with this year’s graduating classes.
Spirit of the Eagle award

Westover to be awarded
WHC Honorary Degree
Evelyn Sue Westover, a
student at West Hills College
Lemoore, passed away
unexpectedly March 30, 2010.
Westover was slated to graduate
with an Associate’s Degree this
May. She had been working so
diligently, but her death seemed
to dash those hopes. West Hills
College Board of Trustees has
decided to bestow her degree
posthumously at the May 27,
2010 commencement ceremony
in Lemoore. Her daughter
Tiffany Westover is tentatively
slated to receive the degree on
her mother’s behalf.

The amazing Golden Eagles from
West Hills College Lemoore capped
a successful season by winning the
California Community College state
championship at Oak Valley GC in
Beaumont on May 17, according to
head coach Dave Neer. The Eagle’s
state championship was the first ever
in any sport
One week after winning their first
ever Central Valley Conference Title,
the West Hills men’s golf team traveled to Chico for the 2010 Northern
California Regionals -- 11 teams and
12 individuals competed for 36 holes
on one day to represent Northern
California in the State finals.
Hoping to qualify as a team for
another West Hills first, the Golden Eagles “fought through 30 mph
winds, cold, and rain coming sideways to win the Northern California
title over Chabot College on May
17,” according to Neer.
“It’s a great story for this young
program only five years old,” Neer

comments of sophomore player, JD
Brewer was announced, ‘And now
to the first tee, JD Brewer, from
Hanford High.’ “

After attending a church party, the young men and their family
headed home. As most do, they had
a normal route traveled to school,
home, or to the store. But for some
reason, the family took an alternate
path. Soon, their mother commented
that she smelled something, “maybe
fertilizer.”
When they proceeded down
Makenna Street, they found the
source of the smell: A garage at the
residence at 951 Makenna St. was
completely engulfed in flames. The
men leapt from the family vehicle to
offer assistance to the occupants who
were asleep -- and didn’t respond to
the Zermeno’s frantic knocks on the
front door.
Ernesto continued knocking on
the front door, while Eduardo pounded on each window until he got someone’s attention. Soon, the man who
occupied the house was awakened
and proceeded to evacuate his wife,
young child, and the family’s dogs.
While the rescue was on, the Zermeno family phoned 911 for fire assistance. Eduardo noticed the victim’s
night wear, and sprinted for his own
home to bring back items of clothes
for the family to wear.
The house suffered damage, and
the garage, with the vehicles parked
inside, was a total loss. Ernesto and
Eduardo told of propane tanks exploding during the fire. This could

WHCL’s twin brothers help save a Lemoore family

In the wee hours of Sunday, May
16, a family was saved from disaster
by the quick actions of two young
men, Ernesto and Eduardo Zermeno
of Lemoore. Both are students of
West Hills College Lemoore.
Ernesto and Eduardo Zermeno help save a Lemoore family.
have become a massive explosion if
the vehicles gas tanks had ignited,
placing neighboring properties and
people in jeopardy. The rescued family, whose names were not released
by the Lemoore Police Department,
is staying with family members in
Fresno until they can return home.
Ernesto and Eduardo are identical twins, and are the first in their
family to pursue a college education.
They are grounded in their “Christian
faith,” and credit “God’s hand for
causing them to take an alternative
path home on Saturday night.”

WHCL students dominate ‘Battle of the Arts’!

For those of you who haven’t heard,
our campus art club, SPLAAT helped with, and
participated in, the Battle of the Arts event
held at the Kings Art Center in Hanford. It was
an amazing platform for not only members of
the club, but other art students here at West
Hills College, to display some of their proudest
artistic achievements. This was a competition
of juried work that included numerous drawings
and paintings, as well as sculptures and prints.
West Hills also offered an array of performing
arts with poetry reading, music performed by
our on campus music club, and an electrifying
vocal performance by art student Karla
Renteria. We also had a past graduate of West
Hills College, Krisitin Kennedy, join the fun
as she displayed some of her sculptures and
did a really great demonstration of encaustic
painting, which is painting with the use of wax.
Here is what some the art students
thought about the event: “Battle of the
Arts was a collision of vision! I found it really
interesting, hot good food, good music, great
art. Watching the children in the chalk drawing
was really fun. It’s neat to see creativity at such
a young age. Kristin Kennedy was amazing and
her demonstration was truly a sight to see. I also
found the poetry reading to be inspiring and
powerful”. – Splaat member student, Shelley
also found the chalk drawing fun to watch. She
says this about the overall experience, “The
poetry reading was enjoyable and the exhibits
were fantastic.” She, as well as the rest of us,
found herself moved by our club member and
dear friend Sue Westover’s Memorial poetry
reading given by her daughter.
The students were not the only
ones who enjoyed the event. Here is what some
guests thought about the experience with our
students. “I didn’t realize how much talent was
in this community. I was able to meet the art
instructor of the college, Michael McDowell,
and I was very impressed by how committed he
is to passing down his talent and knowledge to
his students.”-Irene Yturaldi “I was impressed by
all the originality of the artists, friendly people
it was evident that they wanted you to have a
great time and enjoy the show.”-Dave Nemeth
Something unique that definitely says
a lot about the strength of our art department,
and the passion poured into each piece
submitted by the artists at West Hills, was that
everything sent to the Kings Art Center to be
juried into the show was selected for exhibition.
Go art geeks! This is a great time to let students
know that being involved with campus clubs is a
wonderful way to connect, not only with fellow
students, but with the community. I encourage
anyone who is interested in exposing themselves
and others to what art, music, community
services, and other endeavors can do to
positively affect one’s life, get out there and join
a club!

displayed during the Battle of the Arts. You
can also catch the paintings and sculptures in
the flesh; they will be displayed at the Kings Art
Center through May 29.
