Dear Friend of TTCF,
Leadership. We also celebrated our second
annual Give Back Tahoe Guide for Giving
which collectively raised a total of $355,761
for participating nonprofit organizations, and
attracted 209 first time donors.
It has been an exciting year!
Together through the TTCF mission, we have
distributed more than one million dollars in
grants and scholarships through both our grant
cycles and donor advised funds. We’ve also
facilitated an additional $500,000+ for targeted
programs including:
• a regional housing study focused on the
spectrum of issues and solutions for housing
in Truckee and North Tahoe
• challenge grants to help promote 73
nonprofits doing great work and distributed
during the end-of-year Give Back Tahoe
giving season
• matching funds for our Nature Fund Grant
Cycle
• programs for local nonprofits that focus on
the mental health needs in our region
In addition, we have helped strengthen our
nonprofit community by crafting and delivering
a four-part workshop series focused on Board
Finally, our board and staff completed a strategic
plan that we believe will focus our energies to
achieve even more impact in the coming years.
Our leadership is aligned, our organization
is poised, and we are anxious to engage our
community in new ways.

THROUGH ARTISTIC
EXPRESSION AND HEALTH
Truckee Public Art Commission
(TPAC), with the support of the
Truckee Donner Recreation and
Parks District, brought an idea of
artist-designed community bike
racks to life in 2013.
TPAC hoped that the community
and various town entities would
embrace the artistic bike racks as
a part of Truckee’s way of life. The
Queen of Hearts Women’s Fund
immediately loved the concept
that combined artistic expression
and community function and
granted them $10,000 to install the
first two bike racks. The Truckee
Town Council committed to five
more. Local nurse Jae Gustafson
commissioned a rack for her work
commute.
The call for entries received more
than 50 submittals. Artists of
every age and skill level shared
their creative designs, including
two fourth graders who saw
their design installed at Donner
Lake. It is incredible to watch our
community rally around a mutual
love of art and healthy lifestyle,
and to share these values in public
spaces with residents and visitors.

It was a large scholarship from a reputable, established community entity. I had
heard stories of people trapped in mountains of student debt, and after hearing
that I had received this scholarship, I felt so much weight leave my shoulders.
Universities are breeding grounds for world changing ideas and solutions. In a very
real sense, higher education and a college degree will help me get a job in the
workforce, but it will specifically allow me to get a job that I am passionate about
where I will be able to use my education to create and improve medical devices.”

IN KINGS BEACH
Crisis rarely happens in only one
aspect of a person’s or family’s life.
In our rural region, health and human
service locations are widely spread
apart, and it can be a challenge for
community members to know what
resources are available and to reach
them on a consistent basis.
In 2012, TTCF embarked upon a
capital campaign to raise more than
$2 million to renovate an old eightunit motel to a secure, stable office
space for our critical needs nonprofits.
With the support of Placer County,
S.H. Cowell Foundation and many
individual generous donors, the
Community House in Kings Beach
opened its doors in 2014 in one of the
most economically disadvantaged
areas of our region. The shared space
was a step to enveloping vulnerable
neighbors in the full spectrum of
services that will help them when they
need it most.
North Tahoe Family Resource Center,
Project MANA, and Tahoe SAFE
Alliance headquarter in Community
House and provide safe and
confidential spaces, one-on-one and
small group counseling, workshops,
and community gatherings. With
a Service Integration Coordinator
working between the three agencies,
the organizations are able to identify
the needs of community members
and serve them in one central and
secure location.
The professional and warm space
also invites other agencies and
counselors to integrate their efforts
so that people and families receive
unduplicated, wrap-around services.
Nonprofit Times, a national social
sector magazine, recognized
Community House as a national
model of shared space specifically for
its integrative approach to service.
We are also proud to share that the
Tahoe Regional Planning Agency
awarded TTCF with the “Best in Basin
Award”. The shared space is more
than a location, it is an epicenter of
collaboration and solutions.

TTCF and Sierra Sun collaborated
this holiday season to present the
second annual Give Back Tahoe
Guide for Giving to kick-off the holiday
season with a spirit of gratitude and
community generosity. Amidst the
celebration of the year’s end, the Guide
for Giving showcases the missions and
goals of local nonprofits who serve the
people, animals and environment of
this extraordinary region.
The inaugural year’s success motivated
our community to make this year
bigger and better. More nonprofits,
donors and community support came
to the table to drive momentum the
entire giving season.
A small handful of TTCF donors
provided $40,000 in Challenge Grants
to award nonprofits and their donors
for exemplary fundraising efforts. This
year online gifts, challenge grants,
TTCF donor gifts off-line and matching
grants helped infuse $355,761 into our
community! That is compared to last
year’s $124,000.
This campaign shows the power of
collective giving is far more impactful
than just one person. The guide is a
simple way to connect donors to the
nonprofits in our region that share
their philanthropic interests. Not only
does this help our nonprofits raise
much needed end-of-year resources,
but creates conversation and action
around their missions that continue
to strengthen their impact. This year,
participating nonprofits also received
full access to our year-round Give
Back Tahoe online volunteer module
to connect them with volunteers
passionate about their causes. Watch
for their stories of impact published
throughout the year on our Sierra Sun
Give Back Tahoe page.
It’s wonderful to see the entire
community rally around a unifying
mission to support our nonprofits.

REGIONAL HOUSING STUDY
When more than forty-five different
Health and Human Services agencies
collectively recognize an imperative
to further a conversation around
housing, how can you not respond? At
a November 2014 meeting facilitated
by the Community Collaborative
of Tahoe Truckee (CCTT), a TTCF
program, community agencies
recognized that housing was at the
root of many clients’ experience of
financial uncertainty. On the heels of
that meeting, institutional partners
approached TTCF to explore a regional
collaborative effort to understand the
true needs and possible solutions to
this regional crisis.
With TTCF as a neutral convener and
project manager, key stakeholders
envision creating a baseline
assessment of our regional housing
needs and identifying innovative
solutions along the way. Resource
partners including Town of Truckee,
Placer County, Nevada County and
Workforce Housing Association of
Truckee Tahoe have come to the table
with over $170,000 and committed the
next year to a two-part project plan.
Bay Area Economics (BAE) has
been hired to analyze the regional
workforce housing market. Innovations
already exist in our sister mountain
communities and BAE will align the
most effective solutions with our
region’s specific needs. Working
alongside this collaboration, TTCF
and CCTT will carry out a community
engagement and storytelling plan with
our community outreach partners,
including but not limited to Family
Resource Center of Truckee, North
Tahoe Family Resource Center, Elevate
Tahoe, and Truckee Tahoe Community
Television. This piece will help us
understand the whole picture of our
region’s housing issues by collecting,
recording and sharing the unique
perspectives of our residents, frontline
workers and community leaders.
Every one of our neighbors deserves
to pursue a fulfilling and dignified
life. This unprecedented regional
collaboration between public, private
and nonprofit entities is sure to inform
and inspire us all.

TAHOE50 GIVING CLUB
Since ski resorts opened on the mountains in Tahoe, they have shaped our region. They
marketed our gorgeous mountains to attract visitors and employed many of our citizens
to drive an industry that is the basis of our local economy.
Throughout the years, they continuously renew their commitment to giving back to our
communities through philanthropic projects that match their interests.
Recognizing TTCF’s mission and commitment to North Tahoe region is akin to their own,
they have come together, through a joint partnership with TTCF, to collaborate with one
another to generate philanthropic capital. The Tahoe50 Giving Club’s Ski Pass is the type
of innovation that arises when big minds and generous intentions join to create distinct
and unique charitable opportunities.
Tahoe50 Ski Pass invites likeminded individuals and businesses to invest in our region
in significant and impactful ways that are close to their hearts. Donations help sustain
TTCF’s community efforts through, grant making, philanthropic advising, nonprofit
support, capacity building and community leadership.
This program has provided a new opportunity to engage both with the leadership of our
resorts and a broader network of philanthropists who share our love for Tahoe.

TTCF is proud to work closely with our local resort community to make a difference in the
lives of those who live and play in North Tahoe.
BOARD GOVERNANCE SERIES
TTCF surveyed our local nonprofit
organizations and asked the question:
“What do you need more than
money?” Their response was twofold: volunteer recruitment, which
we are answering through Give Back
Tahoe’s online volunteer module, and
board leadership. We responded by
partnering with the UC Davis Graduate
School of Management- Women in
Leadership Club to develop and deliver
a four-part workshop series on Board
Governance in October 2015.
We approached the breadth of board
governance information by blending
several resources and interweaving
the most valuable pieces into four
(4) three-hour workshops that each
explored: Theory, Practice and
Interactive Application. Three panelists
were interviewed at each workshop
based on their particular expertise
and experience. These twelve experts
share 259 years of board service
and knowledge between them. The
workshops were organized under four
topics:
• Board Responsibility and Culture
• Financial Stewardship
• Effective Planning
• Fundraising
The series invitation was exclusive
to current nonprofit board members.
Executive directors of represented
organizations received all of the
resources and materials of workshops
that board members attended. TTCF
also distributed grants to nonprofit
organizations that sent a board
member to all four workshops.
Nonprofit organizations of every
size and area of impact attended
to represent a nonprofit community
committed to the preservation and
evolution of our home. Nonprofit
board members were able to engage
with one another to create stronger
networks. Due to the success of
the workshop series, TTCF intends
on crafting and delivering future
workshops that serve the needs of
our nonprofit organizations and elevate
our community to higher standards
of service.
Of course it was valuable to new board members, but for those with more
years of experience it was a reminder of elements of good board practices,
and presented new perspectives and processes so essential to keeping up
with the changing nonprofit world. The panels were particularly valuable.
Nothing can beat hearing pearls of wisdom from people you respect and
admire. TTCF found a need and filled it, and we are a stronger nonprofit
community for their efforts."

NATURE FUND BRIEFING
The TTCF Nature Fund began with a
vision to engage philanthropists in the
work of protecting and nurturing the
precious environment of our region.
With catalytic gifts from the Ilfeld
Family Fund, Tahoe Mountain Resorts
Foundation and other generous
donors, our grantmaking is driven
by an endowment that was built on
those ideals. Since 2003, the Nature
Fund has granted over $800,000 to
nonprofits working on environmental
issues and environmental education
programs in the North Tahoe – Truckee
region. The Martis Fund began

partnering with TTCF in 2009 to infuse
even more dollars into the Nature Fund
Grant Cycle for the benefit of our local
nonprofits. Martis Fund resources are

region while the remaining dollars are
distributed throughout the greater
region.

shovel ready restoration, preservation
and stewardship projects that
addressed pressing environmental
issues through collaboration and
visionary solutions. There were also
several grants awarded to both
environmental education and capacity
building to create stronger, more
resilient environmental nonprofits. In
a region as rich in natural resources
and recreation, TTCF and our partners
are honored to serve the natural
environment and the organizations
who diligently work to protect it.
QUEEN OF HEARTS
WOMEN FUND
10 years. In the blink of an eye, the Queen of Hearts Women’s Fund is 10 years
old. Looking back, we’ve had an amazing 10 years. Over 1,000 women shared
the initial dream. Collectively the fund has granted over half a million dollars to
over 35 organizations in our community through an annual $50,000 grant cycle
that awards organizations who serve our four areas of impact and culminates at
our annual GEMS (Grant Educate Motivate Serve) Event to bring our membership
together for presentations and conversation. We treasure our longstanding
relationships with organizations in whom we truly believe, and amongst women in
our community who want to have a voice in our future.
In recent years, we have also seen the establishment and rise of Girls Giving Back,
our youth philanthropy project that has brought together young girls to explore
philanthropy through fundraising and the facilitation of their own grant cycles.
It is fantastic to watch this next generation come to age while shaping their
community.
We came together to share a purpose, to make a bigger impact collectively than
we could individually. And it has worked. As we look forward, we have the next 10
years. We have a story to share. And we have more to do. As one, we are strong –
together we are powerful. Let’s build on the past to strengthen our future. Join us.

COLLABORATIVE OF
TAHOE TRUCKEE
The Community Collaborative of
Tahoe Truckee (CCTT) originated over
20 years ago, based on the need to
advocate for services and support for
local families. CCTT received its first
significant funding in 1996 from the
Sierra Health Foundation to identify
key health needs of children 0-8 in our
region and to design and implement
strategies to address these needs.
In 2008, TTCF received a generous
gift from S.H. Cowell Foundation to
embed CCTT into the foundation and
embrace collaboration as a means
to support children, families, seniors
and all community members in Tahoe
Truckee. CCTT is the “go to” place
for our 45 health, education and
social service agencies to network,
coordinate services and work together
to maximize our region’s limited
resources. CCTT convenes partners
at both monthly resource sharing and
leadership meetings and as community
issues emerge.
CCTT also acts as a unified voice for
issues impacting children, adults and
seniors, and staff spends a significant
amount of time at decision making
tables ensuring that our voice is heard.
CCTT has enjoyed a long history of
success in convening partners to
address community issues, bringing
resources to the region and building
partnerships among local nonprofit
and government agencies. In a region
that collaborates across counties and
large distances, this model allows
partner organizations to focus on
impact while the CCTT staff can
represent the entire collaboration at
regional meetings.
Over the past year, CCTT partner
successes include opening an
Emergency Warming Center to provide
a warm safe space on our coldest
nights and advocating successfully for
increased public transportation routes
providing access to critical medical
services.
CCTT believes that regardless of socioeconomic status or ethnicity, all people
deserve to be healthy, educated and
safe. CCTT also strives to be a “data
and story driven” collaborative. By
honing in on real data and the stories
that often go unheard, we are able
to measure our impact, making our
network stronger and more effective.
Our work with TTCF strengthens our
resources so we can focus our work
with our 45 partner agencies and the
communities they support. We want
to make sure that every resident and
child has the opportunity to live a
happy, healthy life with access to safe
housing, education and critical health
services.

TAHOE DONNER GIVING FUND
The Tahoe Donner Association created
a giving fund with TTCF this year in
order to connect the philanthropic
passions of its community members
with local nonprofits. Tahoe Donner
Giving Fund (TDGF) encourages full
and part time members to become
involved within the larger community.
With over 6,400 homeowners it’s
possible for TDGF to make substantial
contributions to local charities
with even small contributions from

year, TDGF aligned its grantmaking
cycle with TTCF’s open competitive
grant cycle and infused more than
$11,000 into local projects. It also
awarded its first $1,000 scholarship
through TTCF’s scholarship
process. TTCF is thrilled to partner
with members of Tahoe Donner
Homeowners Association to engage
more of our neighbors in shaping the
future of our region.

TTCF developed the Legacy Society
as an honor society for individuals
who have made a gift to the
community through their will or estate
plan. It is our way to recognize with
gratitude and reverence this special
and generous form of philanthropy
that supports the future of our region.
Our members have all made
thoughtful gifts of varying sizes either
through bequests or by making TTCF
a beneficiary of a plan or policy. While
some of these gifts are designated,
others are distributions left to the
discretion of our grants committee.
TTCF is grateful to be able to receive
these gifts and to honor the wishes of
our neighbors. We always welcome
the guidance and wishes of our
donors and are happy to invite family
members to be involved in continuing
the philanthropic traditions of their
loved ones.
Legacy Society members also have
the opportunity to meet one another
at events and to connect with likeminded individuals who love our
region. Other members choose to
remain anonymous. No matter what
a donor chooses, we are grateful and
