In a short story version, JA gets down to business in teaching us how to manage things in life in a fun and creative way. JA has taught me a lot of things on how I should be prepared and what I should know for the future. For example, how we should follow and manage policies and procedures at work. Did you know that in India every time their boss walks in the room, employees have to greet him or her? Or that the cow is considered sacred so they can’t serve any type of beef in restaurants? JA also taught me how our world trades goods with each other and what rules the world has to follow while trading. There is an organization called the World Trade Organization (WTO) that helps the different countries solve problems in a calm and peaceful way. My JA instructor had us pretend we were the WTO. We had to figure out ideas on how to solve problems and what rules should be applied. In the future, I would like to be the president, a marine biologist, or an architect. Through JA, I’ve learned how to manage, follow rules, and solve problems. This is a great program to have. Your investment in Junior Achievement of South Dakota produces results. In 2006-07, we positively impacted 35,532 students. This is a 9% increase from last year and a 462% increase since 1997. This continued success comes from the partnership of businesses supporting Junior Achievement with financial support and classroom volunteers. Our statewide model is working well. Our growing challenge is the ability of local communities to broaden the financial support base needed to retain classrooms and expand the number of classes offering Junior Achievement. Parents and educators agree that the Junior Achievement curriculum enriches the educational experience of students and provides a unique and valuable study of our economy and our free enterprise system. Please join us in finding ways to continue the support needed to sustain our program growth. Volunteers are the heart and soul of Junior Achievement. Our 1,800 volunteers brought the JA programs to life and provided inspiration to our kindergarten through twelfth graders. To students, they offer enthusiasm, knowledge, and living proof of where an education can take you. Our volunteers are mentors, role models, cheerleaders, and teachers working to help today’s kids grow into tomorrow’s success stories. JA program volunteers donated over 22,000 hours to help prepare the leaders of tomorrow. Education and business partnerships remain a cornerstone of JA’s success. We are grateful for our educators’ partnership as they generously allow us access to their classrooms. All the accomplishments and successes that Junior Achievement celebrates happen because of you - the investor, volunteer, board member, educator, and special event participant. The programs start at the kindergarten level and aim to teach students in elementary school how to be positive members of their communities and the world around them. Middle school and high school Junior Achievement curriculum continues to help students grow by focusing on three pillars for academic success: work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy. Listed below are the programs Junior Achievement Worldwide created, which Junior Achievement of South Dakota offers to students in communities across the state. Elementary School Programs • OURSELVES teaches kindergarten children the economic role of individuals. • OUR FAMILIES explains the role the family plays in the local economy to first-graders. • OUR COMMUNITY shows second-graders the responsibilities and opportunities available in a community. • OUR CITY allows third-graders to conduct business operations and make city-planning decisions. • OUR REGION introduces fourthgraders to state economics and the economic resources of regions. • OUR NATION lets fi fth-graders experience the operation of a business. • DOLLARS AND $ENSE is an after-school program that introduces students to moneymanagement skills. Middle School Programs • JA ECONOMICS FOR SUCCESS explores personal finance, students’ education, and career options based on their skills, interests, and values. • JA GLOBAL MARKETPLACE provides practical information about the global economy and its effect on students’ lives. High School Programs • JA BANKS IN ACTION teaches concepts and challenges that banking industries face in competitive environments. • JA BUSINESS ETHICS fosters students’ ethical decisionmaking as they prepare to enter the workforce and take part in the global marketplace. • JA CAREERS WITH A PURPOSE introduces students to the importance of seeking careers that help them realize their life potential and noble purpose. • JA COMPANY PROGRAM gives students a hands-on opportunity to organize and operate a business. 12 • JA AMERICA WORKS focuses on U.S./regional history, economic events, business leaders, and citizenship. • JA IT’S MY BUSINESS! teaches entrepreneurial skills through innovative activities that focus on filling a need, knowing your customer and product, and believing in yourself. • JA ECONOMICS examines the fundamental concepts of micro-, macro-, and international economics. • JA SUCCESS SKILLS develops students’ interpersonal effectiveness and problemsolving skills necessary for the workplace. • JA TITAN introduces critical economic and management decisions through an interactive web-based simulation. • JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT PRESENTS: THE NEFE HIGH SCHOOL FINANCIAL PLANNING PROGRAM which introduces students to the importance of making wise financial decisions. 13 Volunteers Volunteers bring Junior Achievement programs to life by educating students about economic concepts and future opportunities. During the 2006-2007 school year, more than 1,800 classroom volunteers provided over 35,500 South Dakota students skills to succeed in their communities and the business world.
