his great archangel of God is commemorated on March 26. Today, however, his appearances and
miracles throughout the entire history of man’s salvation are celebrated. It is believed that this celebration
was first established on the Holy Mountain in the ninth century during the time of the Emperors Basil and
Constantine Porphyrogenitus and Patriarch Nicholas Chrysoverges, and was occasioned by the appearance of the Archangel Gabriel in a cell near Karyes, where the archangel wrote with his finger on a stone
tablet the hymn to the Theotokos “It Is Truly Meet.” Because of this event, the cell was called, and is
called to this day “It is Truly Meet.” Together with this occurrence, the other

THE EPISTLE
Sing praises to our God, sing praises.
Clap your hands, all you nations.
The Reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Romans
Chapter 5:1-11
B
rethen, having been set free from sin, you have become slaves of righteousness. I
am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you
once yielded your members to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now yield
your members to righteousness for sanctification. When you were slaves of sin, you
were free in regard to righteousness. But then what return did you get from the things of
which you are now ashamed? The end of those things is death. But now that you have
been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the return you get is
sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of
God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
THE GOSPEL
The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew
Chapter 8:5-13
A
t that time, Jesus entered Caper’na-um, and a centurion came forward to Him,
beseeching Him and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, in terrible
distress.” And Jesus said to him, I will come and heal him.” But the centurion answered
him, “Lord, I am not worthy to have You come under my roof; but only say the word, and
my servant will be healed. For I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I
say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave,
‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard him, He marveled, and said to those who
were following Him, “Truly, I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith. I tell
you, many will come from east and west and sit at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
in the kingdom of heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer
darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.” And to the centurion Jesus said,
“Go; be it done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed at that very
moment.

First Annual St. Mary Basketball Camp
On June 27-30, the Basilica of St. Mary hosted our first annual Basketball camp at the Livonia Rec. Center. The
camp was run by H.Y.P.E. Athletics (Helping Youth Progress and Excel). We had more than 80 kids register
and participate in the program this year. All those who attended had a great time and learned a lot! The staff
helped the kids learn and focus on improving their basketball skills and taught the fundamental of sportsmanship. During the week, the kids also had the opportunity to meet and hear from some very special guests; Mr.
Herman Moore (Former Pro Bowl wide receiver for the Detroit Lions), Mr. Mike Martin (U of M Football
Captain), and Mr. Jimmy King (Professional basketball player and a part of the U of M Fab 5 in the early
1990’s.)
We want to thank the C.E.O. of H.Y.P.E, Mr. Ali Sayed, and the Camp Director, Mr. Justin Cessante, for
putting this camp together for our church.
Fr. Jim and some of the campers with
Mr. Herman Moore, former Wide Receiver
