Dan’s Thoughts
Big Sir Dan Capodanno
Here it is August already. The
year is half gone
and summer is
here. Summertime means picnic. Please see
Page 4 and the enclosed flyer for
information about making your
reservations.
I would be remiss if I did not
thank Marilyn Cooney for her
entertainment at our luncheon.
She had us singing along. In a
way, it was to be a tribute to all
those in Nice, France who died at
the hands of a terrorist. May they
rest in peace.
As mentioned at the meeting,
we may explore another venue
for our luncheon. We will try to
get a reservation at Sharp Park
Restaurant for October. Make no
change, however, until you get a
final notice from me.
I know it is summer time, but we
still need your attendance at our
luncheons and your $2 voluntary
donation, even if you do not attend. I know paying the donation
is a sticky subject with some of
you, but remember, it has nothing
to do with the meal cost. It is
about the administrative costs to
run the Branch. We have bills just
like every one of you. We must
pay them. So please, write a
check for the remainder of the
year-$10 to cover this donation. If
that is a hardship, then be sure to

Spotlight on John Rittweger
by Karin Martz
John Rittweger’s philosophy of
life was formed by being raised by
two parents who had lived
through the depression of the
1930’s. He and his older sister
were taught, by example, to conserve, to waste nothing, to value
hard work and education and to
respect the rights of others. When
you left a room, you turned off the
lights; you ate everything on your
plate and you lived by maxims
such as “cleanliness is next to
August, 2016
Godliness”.
That early upbringing has stood him in
good stead all of his
life - he appreciates and values all
that he has experienced and considers himself lucky to have lived
and be alive in the greatest country in the world, the greatest time
and even the greatest music of all
time: the Beatles and the inception of Rock & Roll.

Spotlight on John Rittweger
continued from page 1
John was born in Dallas,
Texas, in 1951, but his family
moved to Chula Vista near San
Diego when he was a child, and
he went to Catholic schools from
elementary to high school.
He graduated from Marian High
School and went to college at
Cal-Poly in San Luis Obispo,
majoring in history. When he entered the work force, there was
no work to be had so he went
back to school for his MBA. He
supported himself all through his
higher education, working at various part-time jobs in the evenings, such as doing janitorial
work and working as a waiter in
nearby restaurants.
His first real job was with Pacific Telephone, which he calls
“the Bell System”, part of AT&T
until 1981, when the government
broke it up. He took the equipment part and worked for Lucent.
He retired from Avaya after 25
years. After that, he worked parttime at a golf store, but since he
still had to put two kids through
college, he worked again, fulltime, at State Fund Workman’s
Compensation in the Information
& Technology Department until
six and one-half years later,
when he retired for the final time.

He met his wife, Lori, in 1987 through mutual
friends and married her at St. Gabriel’s Church in
San Francisco in 1988. They had two children, a
son and a daughter. When his children grew-up and
participated in sports, he coached baseball, soccer
and basketball at various times.
John has four hobbies: playing golf, hiking, swimming and traveling. He joined SIR in 2012 and is
the current Golf Chairman, as well as Assistant
Treasurer of the Branch.
At the end of the day, John feels blessed and
grateful for everything and lives his life on the positive side. He is a great role model for us all.
