What is press hardening technology?
Optimised use of materials,

Lightweight construction is the big issue for the
OEMs. In principle, however, such components are
interesting anywhere “where moving mass requires
energy” i.e. also in the sectors of railway technology
and aircraft construction. Because: lightweight components hit the nerve regarding reduction of weight
and subsequent reduction of fuel consumption as
well as the necessity to reduce emissions.
Highest component strength with simultaneous
reduction of weight - hot forming, also known as press
hardening or form hardening is the technique which
fulfils these demands. It is therefore used increasingly
in automobile construction for body and chassis
components such as side impact systems, bumper
reinforcements and highest-strength, rigid structural
components in the body in white. It is increasingly
substituting products which were manufactured up
till now using cold forming technology and it is opening up totally new possibilities for application.
Technical process of press hardening
The blanks to be press hardened are heated to approx. 950°C on a roller conveyor which runs through
a continuous furnace. A robot places the red-hot
metal sheets in a press containing a special, watercooled die. As the press closes, the material is shaped
by the die at a temperature of around 750°C. During
the subsequent holding time, the metal sheet is
cooled in order to remove the heat from it as quickly
as possible. Due to the fast cooling process, the martensitic microstructure, which is responsible for the
greater hardness values, forms in the steel.
The component receives its ultimate shape in a subsequent step. The unusually high degree of hardness
of the steel and its tensile strength of over 1,400 N/
mm² mean that final cutting of the components with
traditional cutting tools is difficult. 3D laser processing is therefore recommended whereby the final
shape of the component is created by cutting it out
of the shaped and hardened metal sheet.
The advantages: Less weight, greater performance
The advantages of press hardening lie in the precise
dimensional stability with very good reproducibility
and the highest degree of strength and hardness.
These are achieved with a component weight which
is reduced by a significant 30% with at least the same
good performance. Since there is no spring-back
effect with press hardening, the process allows manufacture of very complex and dimensionally stable
components which could not be produced that way
in a cold forming process. Another favourable aspect
of the process is the excellent formability with low
forming forces: from several individual components,
a single complex and light module is created.
The supreme discipline in press hardening is called
“Tailored Properties” through “Tailored Tempering”
and consists of achieving various strengths and hardnesses – i.e. high-strength areas and crumple zones
– even within a single component.
Press hardening fulfils the requirements of the OEMs
for lightweight body parts which are, at the same
time, high-strength and therefore safe since, by significantly reducing vehicle weight, OEMs can ultimately
offer their customers real advantages: lower fuel
consumption and reduced CO2 emissions.

The basis for this is the sound specialist knowledge
of a well-established family company founded in
1947 which has dedicated itself, right from the start,
to developing and manufacturing high-quality metal
products in large quantities rationally, inexpensively
and with the best quality.
VOIT’s core business is the manufacture of complex,
high-precision and fully machined parts using punching, drawing and roll-bending technology as well
as components in aluminium pressure die casting.
The new press hardening division therefore supplements the cold forming and aluminium pressure die
casting of the VOIT group thus providing customers
with new synergies.
VOIT is investing: Further facilities are already planned
at additional locations. Up to three million passes are
to be available within the next five years. Depending
on growth forecasts, up to six facilities are planned for
the next few years. In the maximum stages of expansion, it would be possible to produce between six and
ten million parts a year.

customer´s auditor within the context of a process audit according to
VDA 6.3 in December 2012.
