Allowable misalignments:
∆Ka: Allowable axial misalignment
∆Kw: Allowable angular misalignment
∆Kr: Allowable parallel misalignment
When considering combinations of misalignments, it is
important to understand the allowed figures are dependent
on each other, with an increasing axial misalignment ΔKa the
allowable angular misalignment ΔKw decreases as does the
parallel misalignment ΔKr. The total misalignment a coupling
can accommodate defined by the % total of misalignment
must total less than 100%. (See our installation instructions
at www.ktr.com).
Steel disc couplings are designed to accommodate the
maximum allowable angular misalignment ΔKw with each disc
set. As a result, the maximum allowable angular misalignment
of two shafts in reference to each other is 2 • ΔKw. The
maximum angular misalignment for each disc set is shown
in the table “Technical Data” (RADEX®-N page 105 and
RIGIFLEX®-N page 114).
Angular misalignment
The allowable parallel misalignment ΔKr at a
distance “g” is defined as:
∆Kr = g • tan (∆Kw)
Radial misalignment
The table “Technical Data” (RADEX®-N page 105 and
RIGIFLEX®-N page 114) illustrates the maximum allowable
radial misalignments ΔKr for common spacer lengths, in
addition to the allowable angular misalignment limits ΔKw
of the coupling elements.
The maximum axial misalignment ΔKa for every size and
design are in “Technical Data” (RADEX®-N page 105 and
RIGIFLEX®-N page 114)

Steel disc coupling
Coupling selection steel disc coupling
Selection of coupling size
1. Drives without periodic torsional vibrations
For example, centrifugal pumps, fans, screw compressors, etc.
Coupling selection requires the rated torque TKN and
maximum torque TKmax determined by the conditions below:
1.1 Selecting by rated torque
To determine the coupling size based on load factors
impacting coupling performance:
The application safety factor SB, directional factor SR,
temperature factor St, and maximum rated speed of the
coupling must be greater than the rated torque TN and speed
of the machine.
The nominal torque TKN of the coupling is:
TKN ≥ TN • SB • St • SR
TN = Torque of the machine
SB = Operating Safety factor (see table page 101)
SR = Factor of direction
= 1.00 same torque direction
= 1.70 changing torque direction
St = Operating temperature

1.2 Selecting by torque shocks
The maximum torque capacity TKmax of the coupling must be
greater than the sum of the peak torque TS and rated torque
TN of the machine when multiplied by the operating factor SB,
temperature factor St and directional factor SR.
This is only valid when the rated torque of the machine is
superseded by a shock (i. e. starting of the drive). For drives
with A. C. motors and large masses on the load side we
recommend calculations by KTR (please call KTR’s
Engineering Department).
TK max ≥ (TN + TS ) • St • SR
TS
= Peak torque
Selection of coupling size
2. Drives with periodic torsional vibrations
For drives subject to excessive torsional vibrations (i. e. diesel
engines, piston compressors, piston pumps, generators, etc.)
it is necessary to perform a torsional vibration calculation for
proper coupling selection. (please call KTR’s Engineering
Department).
2.1 Loading by rated torque
To determine the coupling size based on load factors
impacting coupling performance:
The application safety factor SB, directional factor SR,
temperature factor St, and maximum rated speed of the
coupling must be greater than the rated torque TN and speed
of the machine.
The nominal torque TKN of the coupling is:
TKN ≥ TN • SB • St • SR
TN = Torque of the machine
SB = Operating Safety factor (see table page 101)
SR = Factor of direction
= 1.00 same torque direction

2.2 Passing through resonance
The peak torque TSR resulting from resonance must not
exceed the maximum torque of the coupling TKmax
TKmax ≥ TSR
2.3 Loading by vibratory torque
The allowable vibratory torque of the coupling TKW must
not exceed the maximum periodic vibratory torque of the
machine TW
TKW ≥ TW

Steel disc coupling
Coupling description
General description:
RADEX®-N – couplings are designed to transmit torque between drive and
driven components via steel hubs and flexible metallic elements commonly
known as discs. The combination of these components provides high
stiffness with accommodation for misalignments. This product is available in
a variety of shaft gaps to meet your specific needs.
Function and Design
RADEX®-N – is a zero-backlash, torsional rigid, lubrication-free coupling
suitable for horizontal or vertical applications constructed from a variety of
steel alloys, reducing the need for coupling maintenance. This
accommodates misalignment while maintaining a torsionally rigid platform
capable of high speeds, temperatures and torques. The precision machined
hubs are available in a variety of hub mounting designs, optimized to
accommodate maximum bore sizes while utilizing stainless disc pack(s) and
several spacer combinations to accommodate misalignments while
minimizing restoring forces.
RADEX®-N
RIGIFLEX®-N
The disc packs are assembled from layers of stainless spring steel and are
available in 4, 6 and 8 bolts designs, each optimized by finite element
analysis to maximize misalignment capability and torque transmission. As in
most disc couplings, the hub to disc connection is crucial to overall coupling
performance. The RADEX®-N features a pre-assembled disc pack with highgrade shoulder bolts, inducing a preload on the disc, contributing to a 30%
increase in torsional rigidity while minimizing spacer movement.
The standard hubs are available for shafts up to 13 inches and a maximum
nominal torque of 2,478,280 lb-in. RADEX®-N couplings are suitable for
high industrial temperature ranges. Standard solutions are available for most
pump and compressor applications with designs in accordance with API 610.

Explosion protection use
RADEX®-N couplings are suitable for power transmission of drives in
hazardous areas. The couplings are certified to EC standard 94/9/EC
(ATEX 95) as units of category 2G/2D and therefore suitable for use in
hazardous areas of zone 1, 2, 21 and 22. Please see information
included in the Clamping ring hubs section, (clamping hub without
keyway only for category 3), used in hazardous areas must be selected
to provide a safety of s = 2 from the peak torque of the unit. This
includes all operating parameters to the torque of frictional engagement
and to the nominal torque of the coupling.

RADEX®-N
Steel disc coupling
General information
Availability
RADEX®-N couplings are shipped as individual parts (assembled on request). The hubs can be
supplied unbored (RSB), finish machined with keyway or with a frictionally engaged shaft-hub-connection.
Assembly and operating recommendations
(Please see our installation instructions KTR standard 47110 at www.ktr.com.)
For assembly it is important to make sure that the disc packs are assembled with zero axial preload.
When the finish bore is machined by the customer, the concentric and axial running tolerances must be
applied. (See sketch right).
Balancing:
RADEX®-N couplings can be balanced on request. For most applications this is not necessary because
the coupling is precision machined to AGMA or DIN standards. Please consult with KTR if you have questions.
RADEX®-N
RIGIFLEX®-N
Safety regulations:
The coupling must be selected so that the allowable coupling load is not exceeded in any operating condition.
A comparison between the actual loads with the allowable coupling capacities must be performed.
The customer must protect rotating parts against unintended contact (Safety of Machines DIN EN 292 part 2).
Please take care to include sufficient coupling protection (guarding) to protect from injury.
Installation:
RADEX®-N couplings are designed for horizontal installation. For vertical installation, the spacer must
be radially supported (see sketch right). Please contact KTR Engineering for details.

In case of higher speeds or longer DBSE dimensions, please contact the KTR engineering department.
For composite tube applications, the technical details listed (e. g. max. DBSE) may be varied, if required.
Steel disc couplings with spacers are designed for applications with especially large distance dimensions between the drive and the
driven side (e. g. cooling towers, ventilators, etc.).
To achieve high speeds with large DBSE dimensions, RADEX®-N couplings utilize intermediate spacers made from
fiberglass or carbon fiber reinforced nylon (GRP or CFR) when necessary.

RIGIFLEX®-N
Steel disc coupling
Coupling description
General description:
RIGIFLEX®-N – couplings are designed to transmit torque between drive
and driven components via steel hubs and flexible metallic elements,
commonly known as discs. The combination of these components
provides high stiffness with accommodation for misalignments. This
product is available for a variety of shaft gaps to meet your specific needs.
The disc packs are assembled from layers of stainless spring steel designed to maximize misalignment capability, torque transmission
and torsional rigidity. As in most disc couplings, the hub to disc connection is crucial to overall coupling performance. The
RIGIFLEX®-N features a bushed disc pack with high-grade shoulder bolts, inducing a preload on the disc, providing torsional rigidity
and minimizing spacer movement
Standard hubs are available for shafts up to 15.75 inches and a maximum nominal torque of 2,478,280 lb-in. RIGIFLEX®-N couplings
are suitable for high industrial temperature ranges. Standard solutions are available for most API pump and compressor applications.
RIGIFLEX® N disc packs
RIGILFEX®-N disc packs contain scalloped disc sets assembled in
layers and connected to the hubs or flanges, with a zero-backlash fit
and pre-stressed bolts. Varying the number of the layers of the
individual discs allows torque, misalignment, and stiffness to be
controlled for special applications.

Securing the spacer
Since our objective in the development of RIGIFLEX®-N was to
comply with the standards of API 610 and API 671, the spacer is
secured by a safety “relief” cut to ensure that if the disc fails, the
spacer remains in the coupling.
In general, the coupling components are supplied preassembled
with a disc pack.
Safety “Relief”
cut for API 671
Explosion protection use
RIGIFLEX®-N couplings are suitable for use in drives in hazardous
areas. The couplings are certified and confirmed according to EC standard
94/9/EC (ATEX 95) as units of category 2G/2D and thus suitable for
use in hazardous areas of zone 1, 2, 21 and 22. Please read the
information included in our Design Examination Certificate and the
operating and installation instructions at www.ktr.com.
113
RADEX®-N
RIGIFLEX®-N
Function and Design
RIGIFLEX®-N – is a zero-backlash, torsional rigid lubrication free coupling
suitable for horizontal or vertical applications developed in accordance
with API 610 and on request API 671. This allows accommodation for
misalignment while maintaining a torsionally rigid platform capable of high
speeds, temperatures and torques. The precision machined hubs with a
variety of hub mounting designs are optimized to accommodate maximum
bore sizes. The pre-assembled spacer features a safety device containing
the spacer within the hubs while accommodating misalignments and minimizing restoring forces.
