Students are offered the opportunity to pursue a full academic path by attending Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctoral and Postdoctoral study programs. In addition, ASE organizes continuing training programs, teacher training programs, postgraduate programs, as well as MBA and EMBA study programs. In its over 100 years of existence, the Bucharest University of Economic Studies has gained national and international prestige. Numerous academics and graduates have been recognized as outstanding personalities, as they have become academics and researchers in prestigious world universities, members of the Romanian Academy of Sciences and of other national and international scientific fora, or of private or public organizations, parliamentary, government or diplomatic institutions. ASE has 12 Faculties, whose nealry 22,000 students can attend study programs in Romanian, English, French or German: 24 Bachelor’s programs, 87 Master’s programs, Doctoral studies in 10 fields and more than 145 postgraduate continuing education programs. The Bucharest University of Economic Studies is a transparent, competitive, reliable public institution, with strong partnerships with representatives of the economic and social environment, able to pertinently meet the requirements of the labor market. Upon arrival, I was welcomed by the Erasmus Students’ Network which helped me settle properly. Regarding courses, I have found all of them very interesting; students are treated as adults, and as future workers, who have to participate in interactive courses and debates, and in professional or research projects, rather than homework. The year spent at ASE has allowed me to develop many professional skills. I am more flexible, I can adapt to any situation and I am more open‐minded. Thanks to these courses and the cross‐cultural dimension, I feel confident about my future in the field of international business. I have always imagined that my experience as a university student should be unique and I have been keen on making the right choice; thus, I experienced various academic environments, as I studied in Brussels for one year and then for another year I attended the Faculty of Medicine in Bucharest. Once I enrolled at ASE, at the Faculty of International Business and Economics, in the fall of 2014, I knew from the very first week that I had finally made the right choice. At the beginning, I visited Bucharest and its surroundings, and afterwards I went to some rural areas, I went skiing, I went to other cities, I went to Maramureş, I went on trips with friends that came to visit me. Finally, I went back home with plenty of memories and good things from an endless Erasmus experience. Marc Wiese, Germany My Erasmus experience is the greatest thing I've ever done in my life! Bucharest is an amazing city, people are very kind and open‐minded about foreigners. I have so many awesome memories that I can't believe all of them happened in only 6 months. Awesome people, awesome country, awesome city!! Matthias Beck, France I graduated from ASE’s Faculty of Finance, Insurance, Banking and Stock Exchange in 2008. The three‐year Bachelor’s program represented a solid base for my subsequent studies and a career in the financial world. I attended a Master’s program in Econometrics at the University of Amsterdam and a Master’s program in Artificial Intelligence in Great Britain. The high level of mathematics taught in Romania has greatly helped me in Western Europe. I am currently working for an investment bank in London, where I specialise in a field at the intersection of finance and mathematics. Juridical sciences Law My time at ASE as a Doctoral student in Accounting has been a rewarding experience providing me with deep and thorough fundamental academic knowledge, which I continue to practically apply to my professional pursuits. As regards lectures and seminars, the diversity of content is relevant to today's economic and accounting challenges and the curriculum has encouraged me to be resourceful and adopt an unconventional and creative approach in seeking customized solutions for various accounting problems. The faculty challenges students to think beyond what is apparently 'obvious' and to investigate the best alternative options to help promote sustainable growth. I have met so many people from different countries, which is an unbelievable experience. Here you can find friends for a lifetime from all over the world, which definitely broadens your horizon. The choice to attend Accounting Studies at ASE was perhaps the first critical building block to reaching my potential and securing a successful (and happy) future and I strongly recommend it to everyone to join us. Ahmed Al Saedi, Iraq 12 SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ASE hosts 22 scientific research centers, which conduct fundamental and applied research aimed at technological development and innovation. Here are the most important national and international research projects University staff participate in:  the National Plan for Research, Development and Innovation – Ideas, Partnerships, Human Resources and Capacities Programs – fundamental and applied research, supporting young researcher teams;  the Sectoral Operational Program Human Resources Development – doctoral and postdoctoral research projects;  European Union’s “Horizon 2020” Framework Program – research projects in which ASE acts as a partner in large consortia of European universities, research institutes and companies. ASE organizes numerous national and international scientific events (conferences, symposia, workshops, round tables). Bucharest University of Economic Studies supports the publication of 30 journals, most of them with international recognition. After finishing Bachelor’s and Master’s studies in ASE, a Doctoral study program at the same Faculty of Marketing was the next natural step towards fulfilling my dream of becoming an academic. As a PhD candidate here, I have discovered a passion for scientific research, I have enlarged my network with marketing specialists and I have greately developed alongside inspirational academics. Beyond studies, I have gained personal and professional momentum by participating in numerous extracurricular activities (I have represented students for several years), and the most memorable project I have been a part of was definitely KPMG International Case Competition, during which I represented Romania at the international final in Brazil, as a member of an outstanding team. 14 INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION In keeping with its internationalization strategy, Bucharest University of Economic Studies is affiliated to international associations and organizations and has concluded a wide range of international cooperation agreements to continuously increase its staff and student mobility, to improve the quality of teaching and learning processes, to offer its students cross‐cultural documentation opportunities by means of cultural centers and library resources. International Cooperation Agreements ASE is a member of a large network of partner universities based in 40 countries from Europe, North America, Asia, fostering the academic or scientific mobility of students, PhD candidates, academics and administrative staff members, exchange of teaching and scientific publications, cooperation in international research projects. Currently, ASE has more than 180 international partners, 93% of which are European partner institutions. International student mobility If you plan to study economics and business in Bucharest for one or two semesters, you can enrol at ASE as an exchange student, through an exchange program such as Erasmus+, EEA grants, CEEPUS, Eugen Ionescu or a bilateral agreement between universities. Other mobilities are facilitated by various SOP HRD projects at Doctoral studies level, by governmental scholarships or JOSZEF scholarships. Annually, there are over 400 Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral student mobilities. As far as incoming students are concerned, there are approximately 500 foreign students permanently enrolled at ASE and over 100 incoming students who attend our university for a semester or an academic year, through Erasmus programs or bilateral agreements. Study visits On the basis of bilateral agreements with Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers – CNAM Paris (France), École des Dirigeants et Créateurs d'Entreprises de Paris – EDC (France) and HAN University of Applied Sciences, Nijmegen, (Netherlands), groups of students and academics from France annually participate in intensive economic lectures at Bucharest University of Economic Studies. The 2‐3 week intensive lectures are complemented by visits to Romanian and foreign companies. Romanian language preparatory year Romanian language preparation is available for foreign students in a preparatory year, not only for future economists, but also for other professions (technical studies, medicine). So far, this study program has been attended by foreign students from 26 countries on five continents: Algeria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Congo, Egypt, France, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuweit, Lebanon, Mexico, Morocco, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Vietnam and Zimbabwe. The digital library offers access to digital resources for all of the University’s specialized study domains, found in national and international libraries, as well as in economic universities and institutes. The library’s current size can be epitomized as follows: 10 reading rooms, over 21,000 annual users, 700,000 volumes (books and periodicals), 180,000 bibliographical entries in its database. Access to the library’s resources is based on the student ID, issued by the university free of charge. Accommodation and Dining You may benefit from over 5,000 accommodation arrangements while studying at ASE. The University offers modernly equipped living arrangements in central areas of Bucharest, with high standards of living at student prices. ASE’s cafeterias are mainly positioned around ASE’s main building and offer students and staff high quality fresh meals at low prices. Volunteering In ASE, there are many student organizations with various national and international activities. Thus, students can volunteer or benefit from non‐formal education opportunities. The projects undertaken by these organizations focus on various topics and fields, from personal and professional development to conferences and organization of events, as well as to international educational projects. Summer Schools Bucharest University of Economic Studies organizes four international summer schools:  Entrepreneurship and German Language – organized by the Faculty of Business Administration (in Foreign Languages) – in July‐September in Moieciu, Braşov county;  Bucharest Summer University – organized by the Faculty of Management in co‐operation with the Students’ Senate – in August in Bucharest; the 12th edition taking place in 2016;  International Business in the Middle East ‐ organized by the Faculty of International Business and Economics – in August, in Bucharest;  Territorial intelligence for sustainable development – co‐organized by the Faculty of Business and Tourism, the Francophone University Association ‐ AUF and the Babes‐Bolyai University of Cluj – in September, in Hateg, Hunedoara county. 21 OUR STUDENTS ABOUT US My Erasmus adventure started when I landed on Otopeni Airport, where a couple of Romanians were waiting for me. Firstly, I visited Bucharest – a really nice city, then the mountains region of Sinaia, Braşov and Bran – during the Halloween Trip, and finally the seaside. In just a few months Christmas came and I decided not to go home, but to travel around Romania just to see how they celebrate at this time. I started with Sibiu where the Christmas markets are just amazing, then I participated in the “Ignat” (the actual day when the pig is sacrificed), I made handmade sausages, I ate pig skin and I participated in “pomana porcului” – a BIG pork‐based meal for an Erasmus that had eaten a lot of pasta and rice during the previous few months. Moving from that, I drank “ţuică” and red wine at the Christmas dinner and I ate “sarmale” with a very friendly Romanian family. To sum up, I had the greatest Erasmus experience in Bucharest. Reinier Schoute, The Netherlands My name is Sami and I am a second year student at the Faculty of Business Administration (in Foreign Languages). After finishing highschool in England I came to ASE to continue my studies. It’s my first time in Romania and I enjoy it here as the other students opened up to me from the very begining and made me feel at home. The teachers are also very open and willing to provide assistance. Sami Aleriani, Yemen My first semester in ASE has been a great experience. I am from EDC Paris Business School, and I am here to study for the double degree Master’s program in International Business Management. Courses are good and dynamic, with professors who always encourage exchange of ideas, which I have appreciated. Didier Inthisone, France 22 23 ART AND CULTURE AT ASE ASE is recognized as a promoter of culture. It is headquartered in a historic building, it hosts two art galleries and continuously enriches its art collections. The Palace of Bucharest University of Economic Studies is a heritage building erected in 1926 in Piaţa Romană, the centre of Bucharest. ASE’s Aula Magna contains the biggest fresco in Romania, included in UNESCO’s cultural heritage list, a 100‐square metre mural painting made by artist Cecilia Cuţescu‐
Storck, on the occasion of the celebration of 20 years since the establishment of the Academy of High Commercial and Industrial Studies, in 1933. The fresco depicts the history of Romanian trade, to be read on a downward spiral. ASE’s Aula Magna is also adorned by multiple gold plated decorations and two white marble busts of Virgil Madgearu and Ion Angelescu, ardent supporters of the development of Romanian economic sciences. Aula Magna ‐ Fresco entitled “History of Romanian Trade”, by artist Cecilia Cuţescu‐Storck 24 ASE’s art gallery permanently hosts painting and sculpture exhibitions. The “Cecilia Cuţescu‐Storck” Art Gallery, which bears the name of the artist who made the fresco in Aula Magna, is situated on the first and second floors of the heritage building. Since 2010, it has been the venue for the project entitled “ASE’s Painters”, which has hosted more than 25 Romanian art exhibitions with works from some of the most representative contemporary artists, such as: Ilie Boca, Constantin Flondor, Gheorghe Iacob, Viorel Mărginean, Silvia Radu etc. ASE has an exquisite permanently enlarging art collection with works by artists Sabin Bălaşa, Ilie Boca, Dan Bota, Gheo Vlad Boţan, Cecilia Cuţescu‐Storck, Michaela Eleuteriade, Vasile Grigore, Viorel Mărginean, Ovidiu Paștina, Adrian Pârvu, Silvia Radu, Ion Sălişteanu, Sorin Scurtulescu, Margareta Sterian and many others. ASE honours its Rectors by means of the “Galery of the Rectors’ Portraits”, on display on the monumental hall from ASE’s Palace, and the “Galery of the economic personalities”, on display at the 4th floor of the same building. Moreover, ASE’s Library hosts two frescos made by artist Sabin Bălaşa: “Geneză” (Genesis) and “Feerie” (Enchantment), as well as works that have been exhibited as part of the project entitled “ASE’s Painters”. While teaching or learning at our University, we warmly invite you to discover our art projects and collections! “Cecilia Cuţescu Storck” Art Gallery 25 BUCHAREST – A FRIENDLY EUROPEAN CAPITAL Situated in the South‐East of Romania, a EU Member State, Bucharest is just a few hours’ flight away from renowned European capital cities such as Berlin, Brussels, Paris, Rome or Vienna. The city was first documented in 1459, when it was the residence of the Wallachian Prince Vlad III the Impaler, mostly known as Dracula. Since 1862, Bucharest has been the state capital of Romania and it enchants residents and tourists alike thorugh its rich historic and cultural sights and events, its pubs, restaurants and parks. Among the city’s historical places, you can visit: the Old Town, the Arch of Triumph, the Village Museum, palaces and inns, etc. Recent history has left its mark upon the architectural style of certain impressive buildings, such as the second largest building in the world after the US Pentagon Building, the Palace of the Parliament, which BBC journalists have included among the new seven architectural wonders. Pedestrian, bike or open‐top double decker bus tours are frequently organized for those who would like to get familiarized with the city. If you want to experience Bucharest’s cultural life, you can visit the numerous museums, or attend a performance in one of the theater halls, classical or modern music establishments. Many famous contemporary music superstars have chosen to organize a concert in Bucharest: André Rieu, Enrique Iglesias, Madonna, Marc Anthony, Metallica, Pink Martini, Robbie Williams, to name but a few. You can also enjoy Jazz Festivals, the “Europafest” Festival, the “George Enescu” Festival or other classical music events and performances at the Opera, Operetta, and the Atheneum concert halls, famous for their outstanding accoustics. International film festivals also enjoy a large international audience: the BuchareEST International Film Festival/ B‐EST IFF, the Bucharest Music Film Festival, KINOdiseea, the French Film Festival etc. Outdoor activities are also very popular. You can watch a football match on one of the five stadiums, or an amazing Air Show at the “Henri Coandă” International Airport. Sports and nature fans can discover the city’s parks, gardens and leisure areas, as well as the surrounding woodlands and lakes, some of which are suitable for water sports and adventure parks. Numerous clubs, pubs and restaurants that serve traditional food from all over the world are scattered from the Old Town to the outskirts of Bucharest. Beer festivals are a good occasion to try the best local and international beer brands in a lively setting. Last but not least, the city has a very busy, colourful and entertaining night life. Today, according to the latest census, Bucharest has 1.9 million inhabitants and is the tenth European Union city function of population density, attracting tourists from all over the world on a daily basis. Situated in the heart of Europe, Bucharest’s life pulsates with it. How to get to Bucharest You can reach us by car, by train, by air or – if you come from a place in Europe – by bus. “Henri Coanda” International Airport – OTP is Romania’s busiest international airport, with flights from/ to all major cities around the globe. Its neighboring countries are: Hungary and Serbia to the West, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova to the Northeast, and Bulgaria to the South. To the East, Romania has a stretch of sea coast along the Black Sea. The country is located roughly in the lower basin of the Danube River, with almost all of the Danube Delta being located within its territory. The capital city of Romania is Bucharest and its time is the same as Eastern European Time (UTC +2.00). The official language is Romanian, and the country’s currency is the Romanian Leu (RON). As far as weather is concerned, the average summer temperature is 22/ 240C, while the average winter temperature is ‐3/ ‐5 °C. The education system in Romania is organized as follows: pre‐university education is divided into thirteen grades (from 0 to 12). Compulsory schooling starts at age 6 and ends at age 17 (10th grade). Higher education starts at age 19 and is aligned with the European Higher Education Area: 3‐year Bachelor's degree, 2‐year Master's degree, 3‐year Doctoral studies. Places to visit Geographically, Romania is made up of roughly equal mountainous, hilly and lowland territories. The country’s incredible scenery and natural ecosystems, unique architectural patterns and impressive historical vestiges have been recognized by the inclusion of over 25 landmarks from 7 different locations on the list of UNESCO world heritage sites. If you are passionate about historical places, you will love the Dacian fortresses in the Orăştie Mountains (dating from 1st centuries BC and AD), the Mediaeval Fortresses in Sighişoara, the impressive star‐shaped Alba Carolina Fortress, Bran Castle, most famously known as the Castle of Dracula, Râşnov Fortress, Peleş Castle and Pelişor Castle in Sinaia, etc. Rural Romania attracts many tourists through its quaint villages, folk customs and monasteries. Among them, we mention: the merry cemetery in Săpânţa; Horezu – the place to observe traditional pottery while being made; the monasteries in Northern Moldavia; the wooden churches of Maramureş a.o. If nature is what you want to explore, here is a list of unforgettable landscapes: Danube Delta ‐ the best‐preserved delta in Europe; the Transfăgărăşan Road in the heart of the country, named "the best road in the world" by former Top Gear BBC Journalist Jeremy Clarkson; the Bear Libearty Sanctuary from Zărneşti, near the city of Braşov; the Mud Volcanoes from Buzău County, the Red Lake in Harghita. Romania is also known for its Black Sea resorts, as well as for several renowned spas and health resorts spread throughout the country, such as Băile Herculane, Băile Felix and Sovata. If you want to practice your skiing or learn how to ski, there are many sky resorts juts a few hours away from Bucharest. In short, Romania has a lot to offer you in terms of exploration opportunities. It is up to you to choose whether to spend a weekend in the mountains or at the seaside, or to join a two‐week trip around the country to see the most of it!
