The WAYNESBOROUGH TIMES for September 2012
This was the summer of the London
Olympics, and the WCC 9-Holers had
their own “Olympic” golf competition on this side of the pond. Terri Borzillo
once again planned a very special Invitational with Philadelphia Country Club.
Each hole had a sign announcing an interesting Olympic fact. Each team had
a chance to win a trivia contest by completing a questionnaire about Olympic
history. Did you know what two original Olympic sports are no longer part of
the competition? Tug of War and Pigeon Shooting. The winners were
awarded gold, silver, and bronze colored necklaces along with their respective
medals as they took their appropriate places on a three-tiered platform. It
was a wonderful event on a beautiful day. The winners for WCC were:
1st Low Net: Carol Netter
2nd Low Net: Van Deacon
3rd Low Net: Correen Wright
Longest Drive: Colleen McShane
Closest to the Hole: Lisa Fox

On Wednesday, June 13, WCC 9-Holers
traveled to Overbrook for an Invitational
event. The winners of that competition were:
1st Low Net: Van Deacon
2nd Low Net: Sue Shevland
3rd Low Net: Melissa Thach
Invitational Chairs:

August 15th saw the Nine-Hole ladies
headed to Chester Valley Golf Club for their Invitational. It was a great event.
Chester Valley welcomed us to a wonderful day of golf and a delicious lunch.
Each player was given a different colored ball to use in play. If you still had
your special ball at the end of the nine holes,
you initialed it and put it in a bowl for a door prize drawing which
was won by WCC member Colleen McShane. Other prizes were:
1st Low Net: Correen Wright
2nd Low Net: Sue Shevland
3rd Low Net: Melissa Thach
School may be starting soon but the golf season has not begun to wind
down. There are still many great events on the schedule:
Thurs., Sept. 6: 101 Graduation Day (Scramble) with Open Play players.
The 101 program has been a great success with many new members coming
out as first time golfers. The seven sessions of 101 instructional play led by
the professional golf staff covered the basics of golf. About 25 women
attended the sessions. The 101 Graduation will include a morning of play
with the more seasoned 9-Holers.
Wed., Sept. 12: Away Invitational with St. Davids Golf Club.
Thurs., Sept. 13: Sip and Scramble Evening event 5:30 PM. Nine holes of
play followed by a complimentary cocktail and delicious flatbread pizza.
Thurs., Sept. 20: Championship/Chairman’s Cup - Front nine
Thurs., Sept. 27: Championship/Chairman’s Ciup - Back nine
Thurs., Oct 4: Doe Day: This is a member-guest, so invite a golfing friend
to join you for nine holes followed by prizes and lunch.
The heat will break, and beautiful golf-friendly fall days will follow, so
come out and play.

MARK RAY’S TENNIS SEASON WRAP-UP
As we near the end of the summer (ugh!) and another
tennis season, I thought it would be good to reflect on what
we did this year, as the seasons seem to flow too freely and
quickly into each other.
Our ladies’ interclub teams managed, during a tough season, to
hold all our cups, which I feel was an awesome achievement, with
special “kudos” going to Cup 2, a team with a lot of spirit. The
teams were held together at the beginning of the season by our
hard working, thoughtful ladder chairs, Beth Stahl and Sue Zoeller,
who were never afraid to try new rules for the betterment of the
Club.
In June our Waynesborough team of men and women won the
coveted Main Line Cup at Merion C. C. on grass courts, the first
time a “non-grass court club” achieved this.
On the Junior Scene, our girls made it to the finals of the
playoffs under the excellent coaching of Ann O’Shea. This season
we added a USTA Under 12 World Team Tennis Team that played
on Saturdays, which gave the kids additional match play, which
also helps in future tennis play.
John McShane captained his Div. 3 team to another winning
season, and having won the league, they are moving up to Div. 2.
Great job, guys!
The ladies’ 4.0 team, under the direction of Sharon Yonker,
went to districts for the first time—another fine achievement.
Reigning national grass court champion, Leslie Pixley, duplicated
her performance of last year by reaching the final at Merion C. C.,
ultimately ending as runner-up. Culminating that result, Leslie was
picked to represent her country in the World Team Championships
in Croatia. Karen Kemmerer and Ayae Herman repeated as Club
Champions in Doubles, and Karen won the Singles Club
Championship.
Jim Olson and Mike Reckmeyer repeated as Senior Doubles
Club Champions. The Men’s senior team continued to flourish
under the enthusiasm of Fred Witzeling. We gain new “old guys”
every year, part of the process I suppose, and a good, successful
time is had by all.
Thanks to Jessica Beers and Suzanne Olson for their
innovative and fun ladies’ events. The turnout to these events has
been good, thanks to their contributions.
Jim Olson and I were picked to play for Philadelphia in the
Men’s 55 Inter-Districts where the Philadelphia team finished
runner-ups in a strong six-team event.
This year we introduced Saturday Socials from 4:30-6:00 PM,
where members can invite guests to an informal format; they have
proved very popular with anywhere from 5-8 courts being used
every Saturday in what would be “down time” normally.
All in all, we have had a very busy, fun season. I look forward
to seeing you through September and into the Paddle Season.
Thanks to the Tennis Committee and Vlatko
and Ann for all their support.
Sincerely,
Mark Ray, Director of Racquet Sports

FROM THE GOLF PRO
September is finally here! The kids are back to school and vacations have
pretty much concluded. This month, for many of you, is a very active golf
month as we wind down our primary season in 2012. This has been a very
active season at Waynesborough, in particular on the golf course. Due to the
excitement from our membership and overall good weather, many of you are
getting good use out of the Club. On behalf of the staff, I would like to thank
you for your activity. With this increased activity some challenges do occur.
We tend to get some abnormal wear on the golf course especially in the way
of fairway divots and ball marks on the greens. In repairing these divots in the
fairway and fixing ball marks it is important to keep this in mind:
• It is the player’s responsibility to repair BOTH fairway divots and ball
marks on the putting green. This is a basic etiquette in golf. We all enjoy
our beautiful golf course, and if we want to keep it in premier condition,
Mitch Trent and his staff need your help.
• To properly repair a fairway divoto If the divot is intact, REPLACE THE DIVOT
o If not, fill it with sand and seed. Our carts have two sand bottles
attached to each cart. Our caddies carry a sand and seed bottle.
If you are carrying your golf bag, see Derek Kelly, our caddie
master, for a small sand and seed bottle.
• To properly repair a ball mark on a putting green, use a divot tool (we
provide them at NO CHARGE in the golf shop and at the caddie
master’s podium)
o Push down into the turf gently around the ball mark pushing the
grass inward until a flat surface is once again created.
o Tap down with putter.
o An unrepaired ball mark leaves a blemish for approximately 21
days. This is not kind to you or other members.
o If any of you need assistance on how to properly repair a ball
mark please see me or a member of the professional golf staff.
WE ARE HAPPY TO HELP!!
Additionally, with the increased frequency of play, we encounter pace of
play issues as well as other golf course etiquette issues from time to time.
Although pace of play has been improving over the past 15 months, since your
golf committee made it a priority ,we still have room for improvement. Our
pace of play PAR is 4 hours and 9 minutes for a foursome. I would like to
challenge all of you to be UNDER PAR! If every group speeds up 30
seconds per hole we can get our rounds down to 4 hours flat. Playing the
correct tees can also improve your pace of play as well as your enjoyment of
the game. I am sure that most of you don’t know you can even post a score
for handicap purposes from our Gold Family Tees. There is an actual GAP/
USGA course rating from these tees! Lastly, please be considerate of others
on the golf course. Always ask permission to go off of #10 if you have not
played the front 9 first. Never “cut in front” of other members on a random
hole unless the professional golf staff directs you to do so.
Again, thanks for all of your support for the golf program so far in 2012. I
hope that everyone has a great rest of the season. We are looking forward to
a strong finish to our golf season.
Everything for golf,
Nick Wolfe, Golf Professional
SEPTEMBER
Wine of the Month
Cartlidge & Browne
2010 CABERNET SUVIGNON
North Coast, California
Wines in the C&B portfolio were
made to be well-balanced, appropriately
tannic, lightly oaked, and low in alcohol
for food-friendly pairings.
The cabernet was aged in French oak
for 16 months, which has allowed it to
have a beautiful cardinal red color. The
nose is rich with cassis, brambleberry,
toasted vanilla short bread, and
huckleberry. Bold body with a weighty
mid-pallet. The tannin structure is soft
yet fine that carries for a lingering finish.
2010 SAUVIGNON BLANC
Dancing Crow Vineyard
Lake County
2010 Dancing Crow is 100%
traditional clone Sauvignon Blanc, 100%
organically grown.
A brilliant light straw color, the wine’s
aromas leap from the glass—ripe citrus,
fresh lychee and stone fruits, along with
a touch of the herbal/gooseberry
character which is Sauvignon Blanc’s
signature in so many of the famous areas
where it thrives.
