HELP MAKE A BRIGHTER FUTURE
FOR OUR RESIDENTS
All too often, we take for
granted the life this country
affords us. I am aware of this
having heard stories from my
father and grandparents about
life in Europe. Last month, my
wife Marti and I spent three
days in Berlin as part of our 25th
wedding anniversary celebration. Our first day
was spent at the Topography of Terror Museum
and Holocaust Memorial, with a guide on our
second day.
Our guide took us to Wannsee, a beautiful
area just outside Berlin where wealthy Berliners
have summer homes beside a large lake –
think Bratenahl and Lake Erie. The Wannsee
Conference was held there in 1942 – where
15 high ranking Nazi Party and German
government officials gathered for 19 minutes
to discuss and coordinate the implementation
of what they called the “Final Solution of the
Jewish Question.” Five minutes away was Track
17, which looked like a Shaker Rapid stop.
Along both sides of the track were heavy metal
plates that still have dates, the number of Jews
and destination – the Germans kept meticulous
records. In the beginning, a hundred or so were
on the train, which then increased dramatically
to more than one thousand. The last train left
on March 27, 1945 with 18 Jews, and less than
two months later, Berlin fell.
Our last day was spent at the Jewish
Museum Berlin, which features a poignant
visual timeline and chronology of Jewish life in
Germany. To varying degrees, antisemitism and
intolerance were a way of life in Germany for
centuries.
In the United States, we have been
fortunate enough to establish ourselves
carrying forth our Jewish values to benefit our
community and the communities we live in.
We have established institutions that provide
education and care for the elderly and infirm
– many of which were created regardless of
an individuals’ ability to pay. These are the
values that set us apart from others. Without
the support of our generous donors we would
not be able to offer the many life-enrichment
programs to our Montefiore residents.

VOLUNTEER
SPOTLIGHT
Intergenerational Joy for All at Montefiore
By Marissa Gelender, Volunteer Coordinator, 216.910.2566
With special help from guest writer
Brittany Powell, senior, Saint Martin de Porres Work Study Student
We are happy to announce our
partnership with Saint Martin de Porres
High School by partaking in a work
study program that allows students to
experience a corporate work environment
while continuing to take classes. The
Corporate Work Study Program at
Montefiore gives students unique
opportunities enabling them to be allaround successful in their future.
The students, as well as our residents,
benefit from their interaction – both enjoy
bridging the gap between generations
through conversations and activities. The
students’ presence gives residents a boost
of energy allowing them to be more
active and engaged. Residents enjoy the
students’ company while simply walking
through the halls or riding with them
in the elevators, and the students learn
from the residents how precious life is and
that every experience in life is a learning
moment.
Through this work study program,
the students also have the opportunity to
gain experience in an office environment
by working in administration, marketing,
rehab, human resources, volunteer services,
medical records and on the floors helping
unit secretaries. In turn, our Montefiore
staff is given the opportunity to interact
with and mentor the student workers.
Montefiore recognizes the valuable
difference these students and other
junior volunteers make in the lives of our
residents, families and staff. Students ages
12 and up (10 and under with a parent)
are invited to join Montefiore’s dynamic
Junior Volunteer program. Becoming a
junior volunteer is simple – students may
call anytime for an application and to
schedule an orientation session.
The Junior Volunteer program
enables students to work in a variety of
capacities with Montefiore residents and
staff, all while earning service hours and
interacting with others from a multitude
of schools and communities. Students are
free to personalize their own volunteer
schedule according to preferences and
availability.
Thank you to Sally Ziff and the Fannie
and Milly Cadkin Endowment Fund of The
Montefiore Foundation for supporting the
Junior Volunteer program and making it
such a success.

The only bright spot in our visit to Berlin
was the number of students we saw at the
many museums – hopefully being educated
on the past, so their futures will be different.

do at Montefiore – visit montefiorecare.org

MESSAGE FROM
RABBI JOEL CHAZIN
A MARXIST INTERPRETATION OF
HANUKAH: OUTRAGEOUS… OR IS IT?
Karl Marx, Russian
philosopher, economist and
revolutionary socialist, did not
come into existence until 2,000
years after Judah the Maccabee.
However, scholars have pointed
out that the division of social
classes had, in fact, just developed prior to
the Maccabean uprising*. It was this group of
farmers, scribes (the new interpreters of the
Torah) and the lower and middle classes in
Jerusalem that were, during this period, the
backbone of the Maccabean revolt and formed
the fighting force that joined Judah and his
brothers.
The Hellenizers, as the upper class was
called, were attracted to the wealth and
fashions of Greek culture and were content
to make peace with the pagan ways that
accompanied it. To the horror of many, the G-D
of the Jews was now Zeus Olympius (the Greek
god) and this was the god now worshipped in
the Holy Temple. Judah and the people staked
their lives on saving Jewish traditions, and
thanks to his bravery, Judah and his brothers
fought and died for the ancestral faith and the
Torah.
Battle after battle from Beth Horon
to Emmaus to Beth Zur, all within an hour
of Jerusalem, the Maccabees defeated an
assortment of Syrian-Greek forces arrayed
against them, which is how the festival of
Hanukah originated – the Feast of Dedication
declared by Judah and his followers on the
twenty-fifth of Kislev, in 164 BCE.
So, what can we make of this? Class
divisions did matter at that time, but it was the
great majority of the population that would
not surrender the Torah. We credit Judah for
having the courage and charisma to unify the
people who cared about Judaism and to lead
them to the triumph. We will celebrate all that
he did to save the Jewish traditions on Sunday
evening, December 6, when we light the first
candle of Hanukah.
Rabbi Joel Chazin
Happy Hanukah!

Meet THE Team
Please join us in welcoming David Granito, BSN, RN, as the Director
of Nursing for the Post Hospital Care Services and Programs at
Montefiore. David brings more than 18 years of experience in
skilled and long-term care nursing. He served in various nurse
leadership positions, most recently over the last 10 years as
Associate Director of Nursing at Menorah Park. He has a strong
track record of excellent quality and customer service outcomes.
David is certified as both a American Association of Nurse
Assessment Coordination (AANAC) and Resident Assessment
Coordinator (RAC). He brings essential expertise in both pharmacy
and electronic medical record management and has delivered
strong results on the post-acute units in areas of patient satisfaction
and reductions in re-hospitalization.
We are happy to welcome Michelle Schreiner, RN, to Montefiore as a
Patient Care Coordinator of our Post-Hospital Care Center. She has
20 years of experience in nursing. Prior to coming to Montefiore,
Michelle worked at Pleasant Lake Villa in Parma and University
Hospitals Parma Medical Center. Michelle graduated top of her
class from Hondros Nursing College and is currently working on
obtaining her BSN.
Help us welcome Angela Young, LSW, who joined the Montefiore
Social Services team. Angela offers more than 15 years of
experience working with senior and adult populations across the
healthcare continuum – from community work at the Western
Reserve Area Agency on Aging’s Passport Home Care Program and
Buckeye Community Health, to Long-Term and Skilled Nursing
Facility Care at The McGregor Home where she served as the
Director of Social Services. Angela will be working with fellow
social worker Tina Ferrar and Social Services Manager Neela
Chattman in the Post-Hospital Care Center.
We are pleased to welcome Julie Tackla, LSW, to the Social Services
team at Montefiore. Julie brings with her more than 11 years of
experience working in long-term care and skilled nursing facility
settings. She is well-versed in the areas psychosocial assessments,
care planning, and discharge planning. Julie will be joining us parttime as a long-term care social worker for the second floor where
she will work alongside fellow social worker Sarah Axner.
We are excited to welcome Executive Chef Steve Weiss to
Montefiore as the new chef of Dining Services through Morrison
Community Living. Born and raised in Cleveland, Steve has been in
the food service business for more than 20 years and has worked
in hotels, restaurants, private clubs, and retirement communities,
mainly on the Westside of the city. He also has previous experience
working with seniors at The Renaissance, an assisted living
community in Olmstead Falls, in the dining services department.
Steve says that he is very thankful for the opportunity to be part of
the Montefiore team.
Welcome Aboard,
Morrison!
We are thrilled to share with you that
Montefiore’s dining services has partnered with
Morrison Community Living to manage the
dining and hospitality service program for our
campus. We want to thank Talk of the Town who
has been our food service provider for their past
eight years of service.
The transition to Morrison went into effect
on October 8. This decision was made after
careful consideration of the capabilities and
offerings from several highly respected national
leaders in dining service management.
Morrison Community Living is a national
firm with a focus in senior living and nursing
home dining programs with expertise in working
in kosher facilities and currently services 30
Jewish senior housing communities nationwide.
We are confident that Morrison understands the
importance of our dining traditions and our goal
to create a world-class kosher dining experience
for our residents. Morrison’s philosophy of
creating foodservice rooted in tradition, yet upto-the minute in choice, selection and nutrition
aligns perfectly with our goals to improve the
overall resident dining experience.
We became familiar with Morrison
Community Living as they have overseen all
aspects of dining and food service at The Weils,
our senior living community in Chagrin Falls,
for the past five years. They have a proven
track record for high resident and family dining
satisfaction. Through Morrison, The Weils has
hosted events such as a cooking demo with
celebrity chef Bal Arneson of the Cooking Channel.
We are excited about this partnership at
Montefiore as we know you will be too. Please
feel free to contact Mark Weiss, administrator
and CFO, at 216.910.2640 with any questions or
concerns you may have.

#GivingTuesday
Thanksgiving is seen as a day for
giving thanks whereas Black Friday and
Cyber Monday are days that offer great
sales and deals. #GivingTuesday combines
those days and gives you an opportunity
to give back, with a global day dedicated
to coming together for one common
purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.
#GivingTuesday is a simple idea of
helping families, communities, companies
and organizations come together to give
and encourage others to do the same. Let
others know how easy and important it
is by sharing how you are giving. Join us
by using the hashtag and be a part of a
global celebration of a new tradition of
generosity.
Annual Sustaining Campaign –
Your Generosity Makes
the Loving Difference
It has been our privilege of providing
innovative and loving care at Montefiore,
The Weils and in the community for 134 years.
Despite the mounting fiscal
challenges, Montefiore and The Weils
continue to touch thousands of lives
annually, on our campuses and in homes
throughout the community. These
essential services we provide each day, give
families and friends the peace of mind
that their loved one is in caring, capable
hands.
Your generosity makes Montefiore
and The Weils a better place to live, work,
visit and volunteer. Loving gifts ensure
that each resident receives the best in care
and services, regardless of their financial
ability. Please consider supporting
our annual campaign – you make the
difference for our residents and the whole
community!
Home Smart In-Home Memory
Technology Program
We are excited to share that the Mt.
Sinai Health Care Foundation board of
directors has approved our request of
$100,000 for “Home-Smart – In Home
Memory Technology Integration Project.”
This program will use smart, adaptive
technologies within our In-Home Memory
Care Program participant homes.
In the coming months, we look
forward to using these funds to integrate
cutting edge technologies into our
recently launched community-based
memory program. We are grateful to
the Mt. Sinai Health Care Foundation for
their support of this important community
resource.
The Home Run Hits a Grand Slam!
We are grateful for the more than 300 runners and walkers
that came out despite the drizzle of rain to support The Montefiore
Foundation! Together as a community, The Home Run raised more
than $55,000 that will enable Montefiore to distinguish ourselves
by providing the exemplary care residents, patients and families
have come to depend on every day, regardless of ability to pay.

A GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING
I received a very special note this week. It
was a note from one of our nurses who received
a letter acknowledging a donation that had
been given to the Montefiore Foundation in
her honor. The gift was made in appreciation
of the loving care her mother experienced
during her stay. It was a mitzvah on many
different levels — The Montefiore Foundation
received important funds to help us help others.
The donor felt a special warmth knowing she
supported Montefiore while acknowledging
the caregiver’s kindness, and the caregiver was
encouraged to continue to provide the best in
care for her patients.
Maybe it was a kind word, a gentle smile
or a warm blanket that brought comfort to
you or your loved one. It could have been the
immediate attention at just the right moment
or a visit from a volunteer during an otherwise
mundane day. I hope you will consider making
a gift to say “thank you” in honor of someone
who brightened your loved one’s day. I promise
it will brighten your day as well.
Each of us can be part of making the loving
difference.
