Larsen Curling Centre

Serving Berwick • Kings County • Annapolis Valley
Proudly Owned and Operated by the Community
The Kings Mutual Century Centre is a modern sport, recreation and
public assembly complex serving all citizens in the Town of Berwick
and surrounding areas. Phase I, consisting of a NHL-sized ice surface
and 800 seat arena complete with a 200 metre walking track and a
large community/multi-purpose room operated by the Berwick &
District Lions Club officially opened in October of 2010.
The Centre has a very unique operating model entirely operated by
volunteers. The Berwick and District Community Association
oversees the arena and walking track. The Berwick & District Lions
Club operates the community room. In the future the Larsen Curling
Centre and a Wellness/Fitness Centre will be added as part of Phase II
construction. Representatives from each organization will form the
volunteer Board of Governors.
Background
The original concept and plans for the Kings Mutual Century
Centre has always included a fitness centre, curling club,
wellness/fitness centre as well as the arena and conference/
banquet room. In 2008 with costs escalating, the Apple Dome
Steering Committee decided to focus on the arena, walking track
and banquet room component of the facility. The KMCC Board
agreed to begin Phase II when Phase I was complete. Phase II
includes the Larsen Curling Centre and Wellness/Fitness Centre.
Our Effort
The construction of the new facility is managed by a dedicated
group of volunteers. The mission of the KMCC Board is to
“build for the wellbeing of Berwick and District residents, a
financially sustainable facility, on a site suitable for present and
future recreational needs.”

A Regional Vision
The Kings Mutual Century Centre has become a regional centre as
planned. The arena facility plays host to the Worldwide Auto Sales
Valley Junior A Wildcats, CIBC Wood Gundy Valley Major Midget
Wildcats and the Kings Mutual Valley Major Bantam Wildcats.
Western Valley Minor Hockey, Berwick Minor Hockey, Berwick
Ringette, Berwick Broomall, Berwick Recreation Hockey and Central
Kings High School Boys and Girls call the KMCC home. Many local,
regional and provincial events have been held there also.
The community/multi-purpose room has attracted many events and
organizations from throughout the region.
Phase II will add the Larsen Curling Centre and Wellness/Fitness
Centre, services that are needed in the area.
These magnificent additions to the KMCC will further enhance
wellness, inclusion and accessibility. The Centre will encourage
economic development by attracting visitors and tourists, showcase
and promote local cultural accomplishments, provide new
employment opportunities during and post construction, and offer
another great reason to live in one of the fastest growing areas in
Nova Scotia. The additional components will ensure the KMCC
continues to play a key role in the Annapolis Valley’s effort to
become a leading destination for sport and event tourism in Atlantic
Canada.
A Proven Track Record
Our region has a proven track record of infrastructure development,
sustainability, community leadership, volunteerism and hosting local,

regional, national and international events. The Kings Mutual Century
Centre complements this record. Phase I was built on time and on
budget with no long-term debt. Thanks to tremendous community
support, the KMCC generates a surplus annually.
Budget and Financing for Phase II
This is difficult to predict at this time, previous estimates have been
done may not include additional items identified by the Committees.
A preliminary estimate of the budget for Phase II is in excess of
$4,000,000.
Proposed Timeline
Taking into consideration the tasks to be completed, grants to apply for,
financing and fundraising the completion of Phase II could take up to
two years. Using fiscal years, further planning and fundraising would
take place in 2016/17. Also in 2016/17 final drawings, funding
applications, tender/building selection method would be undertaken.
Construction may begin in the near future, which will take six to eight
months.
A multi-use approach
opens up the
opportunity to involve
funding partners such
as the municipal,
provincial and federal
government grants and
funds, business
sponsorship, foundation
funding and community
fundraising.
About the Area . . .
Town of Berwick, Nova Scotia
Berwick is located in the centre of the beautiful Annapolis Valley, about 75
minutes from Halifax. Approximately 2,500 citizens live in this active rural
area of the province, known as Nova Scotia’s Apple Capital. Noted as one of
Nova Scotia’s fastest growing areas (Census 2006 population report), the
town boasts a dynamic community of innovative entrepreneurs, artists and
athletes. Many of the community’s athletes and builders are recognized in
the Sports Hall of Fame section of the Kings Mutual Century Centre.
Municipality of the County of Kings
Kings County is located on the beautiful Bay of Fundy, approximately one
hour west of Halifax. Much of the Municipality is made up of the fertile
Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia’s richest agricultural region. Kings County is
home to close to 50,000 people; Berwick is located within its borders.
The Annapolis Valley
Located along Nova Scotia’s Evangeline Trail, the Annapolis Valley is an
extraordinarily beautiful and historic destination. The Valley is located just 60
minutes from Halifax and the Halifax International Airport. Here, the land and
sea merge, the past lingers in the present and both the French and English
have found a home.
Curling in Berwick
The Berwick Curling Club has been an integral part of sporting
life in Berwick for close to one hundred years. Many local
curlers have represented our community at both provincial
and national events over the years. It is a very proud history.
Our present club, built in the early 1960’s, offers curling
opportunities for both recreational and competitive curlers
from school aged children to seniors. Programs include Learn
to Curl, Stick Curling, Seniors Day Curling, Junior Curling,
Recreational Mixed Curling, Team Curling and Corporate Rec
League. The Berwick Curling Club is thriving and looking
forward to our move into a new facility in the near future.
People who cannot find
time for recreation are
obliged sooner or later
to find time for illness.

Larsen Curling Centre
In 2009 the Larsen family donated $100,000 towards the
cost of a new curling facility to be built as part of the Kings
Mutual Century Centre complex. It will be called the Larsen
Curling Centre. .
This facility will have four sheets of curling ice, a large open
lounge/viewing area, bar, kitchenette, change rooms and
storage space. In addition the entire facility will be wheel
chair accessible. Plans are being made to host top level
provincial and national events at our facility. The Berwick
Curling Club is a growing and active club providing curling
experiences for a large number of junior, as well as adult and
senior curlers.
