The skills taught in the workshop take a back-to-basics approach,
including:
• How to say what you mean in a clear, direct, and non-offensive way.
• How to listen and be sure you understand your partner with
accuracy – misinterpretations are the source of numerous
conflicts with couples.
• How to strengthen conflict management skills in your
relationship.
• How to improve mutual understanding and appreciation.
Couples often have busy lives: dual careers, child rearing, community
involvements and extended family. It’s possible to get caught up in
day-to-day demands and lose sight of the connection and affection
that first drew you together. Specifically, for new couples, it’s easy to
find yourself losing the “fun factor.” But for all couples, challenges can
arise around how to manage guilt, resentment and other emotions
that may build up over time. Ultimately, ask yourself: Why not to
learn to work through the barriers and rebuild the bridges in your
relationship in an enjoyable and non-threatening environment?

Fleet & Family Support
An interesting thing happened the last time the Couples
Communication Workshop was offered at the NBVC Fleet & Family
Support Center (FFSC). When all the participants introduced
themselves, at the 90-minute, skill-building workshop, it turned
out they were there to refresh their couples communication skills.
According to one service member about him and his wife: “We took
this workshop years ago. We just want to take it again to fine tune our
communication, so we can continue to strengthen our relationship.”

Stay on The Sunny Side Of Life
STEVEN W. HENRY, MFT, FFSC Clinical Counselor
There should be a lot of fun in the sun this summer in Ventura County.
Beaches, mountains, outdoor festivals, and more, give you and your
family many paths to enjoyment. However, a sunny day is not always a
happy day. Human beings usually pay more attention to what is wrong
than what is right. Scientists call this problem “the negativity bias.”
Our brains are on the lookout for bad news and we don’t have to
look far. There are everyday problems such as the pressure of a
work deadline or sitting in traffic. Then there are larger problems:
the drought in California or terrorism. If you watch TV news or read
newspapers, much of the news is bad news. Our minds are attracted to
the negativity. Bad news sells. But focusing on what’s bad is stressful,
and a problem arises: We miss out on the good times happening right
in front of us.
History documents times when people had to constantly be on
guard. Our survival was threatened by other human beings,
animals, famine, etc. Today, a part of our brain is still focused
on day-to-day survival. It tells us to be on guard even
though we are usually physically safe and don’t need to be
as focused on what either could or did go wrong.
work achievement, someone lets you merge into traffic, your spouse
makes you laugh, or someone smiles at you. The trick is to stop and
focus your attention on that positive event, instead of moving on to the
next thing. Specifically:
• Notice how it impacts your mind and especially, your body – right
in the moment.
• Observe how the small, positive events make you feel for at least
several seconds.
• Perform this practice intentionally and repeatedly in order for it to
have a lasting impact.
The negativity bias allows negative thoughts and events to easily
become stored to memory. By contrast, positive thoughts and events
are not so easily stored in memory. That is why it is important to
“stop and smell the roses.” If you spend several seconds
with a positive event, then it will be stored in your brain.
That part of your brain devoted to the good things in
life, will actually grow in size, making you a more
positive person. What you focus on grows (literally).
So, this summer, “keep on the sunny side of
life” – even when it is foggy! Try to focus on the
small, good things right in front of your nose. If
you commit to this practice over time, it will make
a big difference for you and those around you.
There is a way to combat the negativity bias: “stop and
smell the roses.” You have heard it before – basically,
noticing and focusing on the many positive events that
happen each day. These small events or moments -- your
child runs to greet you at the door, your breakfast tastes
good, you receive a warm compliment, you have a successful

Your Career
MICHELLE STUBBLEFIELD, Fleet & Family Support
Military spouses often encounter difficulty in establishing a career
path that goes uninterrupted for more than 3-4 years. Permanent
change of station (PCS) orders require them (and their families) to
relocate and start over in a new area, which can directly impact a
spouse’s livelihood and career path decisions. However, with solid
planning, spouses can overcome such obstacles and uncertainty, and
instead progress toward career success.
Specifically, if you’re a working spouse and because of PCS orders,
you accompany a service member to a new duty station:
• Research the Economy. This may seem obvious, but many
spouses take a “wait and see” approach. They apply for jobs
once they are familiar with the area. Instead, do your homework:
Become a relocation expert even before you arrive. Check
with the Chamber of Commerce or Fleet & Family Support
Center’s (FFSC) Family Employment Readiness Program (FERP)
coordinator about top industries in the county. Also, search the
major job engines.
• Revisit Your Resume. Before moving, polish your professional
summary to alleviate some of the stress, upon arriving. Tip:
Don’t write about your responsibilities, but instead, highlight
your accomplishments. One of the many services that FFSC
provides is free resumé review and job coaching advice from your
FERP coordinator. We provide classes for federal employment,
resumé writing, interviewing techniques, job searching, using
social media, and more.
• Know Your Spouse Preference Programs. Utilize these before
they expire! FERP provides a wealth of information for priority
programs and has points of contact for a direct link to the various
programs. See the Helpful Links, below, for a list of civilian
companies that prefer to hire military spouses, as well as those
offering telecommuting. For Federal
Employment,
refer to the DoD’s Priority Placement
Program Handbook, Chapter 14.
• Find a Mentor or Become a Mentor.
Military spouses benefit from
networking. You’ll find advice, sharing,
learning and support by pairing with
a professional in your career field. Get
matched up or pledge to become a mentor
through the MilSpouse eMentor Program,
a partnership of ACADEMYWOMEN and the
U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s
HIRING OUR HEROES Initiative.
