TECHNOLOGICAL LEADERSHIP
AT THE CUSTOMER’S SERVICE
2006 has been a positive year for the world economy and has encouraged the BLM Group to exploit its innovative potential and record
a performance of particular importance. The Group’s turnover increased by 25% compared to the previous year to reach 115 million Euros. This is a result that expresses the excellence of the BLM
Group activity, confirmed by the positive assessment of customers
in the various markets and sectors of the Group.
INSPIRED FOR TUBE
OPINION
Almost 60% of the turnover came from new products that have been
launched on the market over the last 3 years, which confirms the importance of continuing with heavy and constant investments in research and development.
Pietro Colombo
BLMGroup has shown how product, process and organisational innovation increase the competitive level and consequently customer
satisfaction. The continuous efforts made in innovation relate to both
the material and immaterial parts of the systems implemented. The
growing attention towards software architecture and development
of integrated processes, governed by software and control systems
has turned out to be of fundamental importance in guaranteeing a level of excellence
in production.
Behind this success there is undoubtedly a deep-rooted corporate culture that interprets innovation not simply as the task of a specific functional area, but as a continuous commitment that involves all the functions within each production unit. In particular, the integration of technological skills within the entire Group makes it possible
to guarantee a high quality and innovative level of the products.
The most avant-garde technologies in tube processing that enhance our bending
and endforming machines, laser cutting systems, saws and associated software systems will be shown during the company’s Open House, which will be held at the headquarters in Cantù from 15 to 31 March, 2007.
We are certain that a growing interaction between customer and company can
generate to mutually beneficial advantages and stimulate a virtuous circle towards
continuous innovation.

Lasertube is part of the “full service” offered by Rautaruukki,
a leading solution provider

Tube maker
“More with metals”
With facilities in 23 countries, 13,000 employees and
an overall turnover of 3.7 billion recorded in 2006
alone, Rautaruukki Corporation has made a major
change in its strategy and is becoming a strong player in its sector. As a part of this change, the Corporation has used marketing name Ruukki since 2004.
Ruukki’s real strength and its many activities are described with great effect in the group’s slogan “more
with metals”. Today’s Ruukki not just has a wide selection of metal products and services but also supplies metal-based components, systems and integrated systems to the construction and mechanical
engineering industries.
The metal product division, in particular, supplies
tubes and profiles starting from 8 and exceeding
300 mm in diameter to cover a vast industrial field,
including such applications as metal furniture, frames
for machine tool and transport systems, structural
elements for the construction, fitness equipment,
fencing and agricultural machinery to name a few.
The fifth laser is on its way
Thanks to the innovative production systems at Ruukki, the company offers what can be defined as a
“full service”: that is, a complete service from production, storage, processing and supply of standard

and special products, parts and even components
ready for immediate use.

The choice of having ADIGE as a supplier of the
Lasertube cutting systems is also part of this project. The initial investment in this direction was made
in 1999 to increase the service and along the same
line to add value to the production of bicycle components.
Ruukki currently uses four ADIGE lasertube cutting
systems (with a fifth one on its way) that are able to
process from 10 mm to 508 mm diameter tubes in
a completely automatic cycle, handling bundles starting from 4,000 kg. The ADIGE systems operate over
three daily shifts and guarantee the delivery times
requested by the other group divisions, even though
it cuts 2-hour average batches.
Ruukki's objective is to specialise by changing from
being a reliable steel supplier to become the most
desired supplier of metal-based solutions for selected customer segments by 2010. The upgrade
to a full customer service concept means an ability
to recognise and provide an optimal solution to
its customers’ challenges. The three divisions and
their offering complement each other: all focusing
on serving the customer.

Stalmannen, in Sweden, specialise in tube
manipulation from coil.
Climate control
The coil specialist
INSPIRED FOR TUBE
Such applications require the use of titanium,
stainless steel, aluminium and copper pipes;
all materials that often soar in price and are
subject to considerable fluctuations that force the
users to search for increasingly competitive
suppliers and production means.
“Efficient production systems are therefore
essential. The use of the PLANET tube benders
gives us the possibility to start from a coil,
processing it over three shifts, even with one
operator supervising two machines, producing the least amount of scrap, draw bending or compression bending, swarfless cutting
or performing integrated endshpaing and
serpentine with a maximum 2,000 mm pitch”.
The specialisation of the Swedish company Stalmannen, is very particular and unusual: i.e. to
bend and process tubes, from coils and “noble” materials only. This is a detail that Magnus
Aretjäll, owner of the company, has been proudly promoting since 2004 when he took-over his father’s company that was founded back in 1976.
This courageous choice shows how specialisation pays off.
Technology is inevitable
To be able to process tubes from coil requires efficient technologies that provide savings in material and perform various processes in line automatically. “These are features that apply to all the
Planet tube bending machines produced by the
BLM GROUP”, emphasises Mr. Magnus.
With three tube benders installed in the line, together with a tube endformer and three-dimensional tube measuring system, Stalmannen is able
to supply hundreds of thousands of tubular
components per year, many of which are used
in new and innovative sectors: heat exchangers
for sea water swimming pools, fuel distribution systems, solar panel fluid tubes, heating pumps and
still many, many more.

Aluminium and titanium:
two success stories
“Stalmannen processes 4 to 22 mm diameter
tubes, from coils only, as already outlined, and
this helps us to be more competitive compared
to the supply of cut-to-length tubes” says Mr.
Magnus. “The experience gained over the years
has helped us to offer various solutions to our
customers and make them save even up to 50%
compared to the past. In various applications,
for example, copper can be substituted with
aluminium which, although it has the same diameter, is lighter and easier to work. As to costs,
the savings are considerable if you think that a
2,000 kg copper coil can cost € 15,000 and one
of the same length in aluminium that weighs only
600 kg costs only € 3,000”.
“Another example, of a different nature – continues Mr. Magnus – is the use of titanium tubes instead of stainless steel for heat exchangers handling sea water. The high level of corrosion
makes the use of titanium far more convenient
and guarantees without doubt a longer life.” Taking a look at the numbers is the best proof to support these choices: 200,000 linear metres of worked
titanium tube per year is outstanding evidence.

Technology and human resources make MTP
the most complete tube factory in Brazil
INSPIRED FOR TUBE
Subcontractor
A road to success
Metalurgica de Tubos de Precisão (MTP)
with facilities at Guarulhos, Sao Paulo, Brazil,
is a leading company both in the manufacture
and processing of precision tubes in carbon
steel.
In the past, the company was already known
as Mannesman Tubos de Precisão and since
2000 it has been part of the Grupo Brasil as
MTP. With this important technological and production heritage, MTP can boast a production
organisation and integrated know how that
make it the most complete tube producer and
manufacturer in Brazil.
The processes that start from raw materials and
proceed to the production of tubes (welding,
heat and chemical treatment and drawing), also
include the production of finished, laser cut,
bent and welded tubular components that
are ready for being assembled.
10
From tube producer to component
supplier
As part of this development strategy, which was
the only one of its kind in the country, a considerable role was played by the investments made
in high-tech production systems to increase
added value to the production of plain tubes. The
most important of these came from a ten-year cooperation between MTP and the BLM GROUP; a
co-operation that allows the development of new
processes, excluding the conventional operations
and exploiting the technological advantages in
terms of flexibility, reduction in costs and production times and, last, but not least, the advantage of producing superior quality components.
This has led to a new placement of MTP on the
market, from a precision tube manufacturer to
a supplier of finished tubular components.
MTP’s major customers are in the cycle and motorbike, car components, metal furnishing,
household appliance sectors, etc.

emphasises “the important contribution
of human resources to the success of MTP
in over 15 countries where its products are
marketed. We have highly qualified people who
take active part in the development of new
projects with the customer, supported by a
sales organisation that is specialised in the various sectors of activity ”.
An example of the results of this integration
aimed at finding a solution to the customers
every need are the endless recognitions received and exclusive participation in international projects, such as components for cardanic joints in Toyota’s Hilux pick-up and those
for the rear axle in Volkswagen’s Polo and Fox

Gruppo Giannelli is a renowned leader in the production of motorbike exhaust systems. The Group
is made up of three companies: Giannelli Silencers,
ARROW and Solutions, Moulds and Tooling. The
first deals with original equipment and aftermarket
exhaust mufflers and silencers for mopeds and motorbikes; ARROW, on the other hand, offers top end
aftermarket products. Solutions, Moulds and Tooling deals with the design and manufacture of industrial moulds and tools.

Outstanding production flexibility
ARROW’s global turnover can be broken down as
follows: 70% in Italy, 56% of this being in the aftermarket sector, a percentage that soars to 90%
when it comes to the remaining 30% of the foreign
market. The remaining percentages relate to original equipment.
The aftermarket sector changes considerably due
to its nature and has very low reaction times as
well as outstanding production flexibility. This has
led Arrow to install the ADIGE Lasertube LT 905
cutting system, which has reorganised and optimised production and practically done away with
outsourcing particularly for important operations
such as laser cutting of its components.
Today, 90% of the exhausts produced by ARROW contain components that have been laser

Laser cutting has allowed ARROW to organise its
production in an efficient manner for both small
and medium-large batches. “Almost everything
we produce is laser cut” says Giannelli. We still
cut some components in the traditional way, but
we were thinking of a manifold kit that has about
ten pipe bends to be cut, for example like the Hon-
da CBR 600 manifold, of which 70% is laser cut
and, even before, it was designed for specifically for this”.

The three cuts necessary in 30”
ARROW’s production is more streamlined to the
point that the advantages in terms of logistics and
production steps compensate even for any
increases that may arise in production costs.
A fine example of this is the production of the component that couples the exhaust manifolds and that
requires several distinct cutting steps, with welding and three deburring cycles in between. The
laser performs these cuts in 30” in a single position instead of three separate operations that
involved complex handling and cleaning of the
pieces. Even the inconveniences arising from coupling and welding have been solved and reduce
scraps.
This undoubtedly demonstrates that the laser has
revolutionised production at ARROW; it is worth emphasising, however, that regardless of the applied
technology, two strategic phases of the activity are
performed by the unmistakable skill of the operator, such as assembly of the exhaust system and
most of all fine tuning of the initial prototype.

Thanks to the Lasertube LT 712D system, Officine di Lombardore
The real core business
is service
From coil to finished piece
With a view to providing an increasingly complete
service, Officine di Lombardore has installed an
ADIGE Lasertube LT 712D cutting system, thanks
to which the company can supply not only tubes
that are cut-to-length, but also finished tubes.
“There aren’t that many producers in Europe like
us, who are able to start from a steel sheet coil
and process it to provide a finished product ” explains Mr. Pastore. “We have taken this step because from a strategic point of view, although it
is a niche sector for the moment, this type of production can guarantee a potentially greater growth
compared to a simple OEM supplier, and among
other things, we offer the advantage of raw materials that certainly have a lower cost and are immediately available”.

Inspiring innovative products
The “laser project” officially started in 2006 when
the ADIGE system was installed; “since then, we
started to promote the activity in decisive manner ” says Enrico Bencini, Sales Director. “The
new laser service attracted a lot of interest in our
customers, about 20% of which had an immediate need for finished components. Another 20%, on the other hand, did not have an
immediate requirement, but showed interest in
the advantages deriving from such a service.
This result has immediately allowed us to saturate the use of the machine for one working shift
and now we are getting organised over three
shifts. To further disseminate this technological
know-how, we are organising small open house
activities to show designers and engineers, the
state-of-the-art that has been achieved in the
manufacturing department.
To see a machine, its processes and, consequently, our service potential can undoubtedly
provide inspiration to study new products using tubular components rather than sheet
metal. In fact, the laser offers an all-round
possibility to re-design old products or study
new ones whereby the tube can be used in a
more efficient and convenient manner”. It is not
just by chance that the automotive industry has
been the most receptive sector to date.

that combined with a top class material quality
has made us extremely versatile”.

The BLM GROUP “all-electric” tube bender; considerable process
advantages thanks to state-of-the-art technology.
INSPIRED FOR TUBE
Technology
“all-electric” bending
Electrically-driven machines to perform heavy
machining operations can be found increasingly more in the machine tool sector in place of the
classical hydraulically driven ones. Even the tube
bending sector is experiencing this irreversible
process.
The use of electrical axes, their operating repeatability under various environmental conditions and the extreme reliability of the machine,
contribute to making precise estimates on the real
output of the unit.
In the “all-electric” machine that have been developed by the BLM GROUP, the position and
strength at which tubes and tools have to be manipulated is controlled by electric motors and ball
screws. The machine’s numerical control there-
16
fore goes from the typical 3 or 4 axes to a system
that is able to control from 9 to 15 electrical servo axes, both in position and torque.
The CNC is able to handle axis synchronism and
interpolation in order to perform complicated
and very accurate set-ups. Moreover, the
torque/force control allows to compensate for
the variations in the axis position given by errors in the pipe geometry of elongation of the material.
Energy consumption and environmental
impact
These two aspects are also among the major advantages of an electric machine. Contrary to a
hydraulic pump (which is always on, no matter
what the cycle condition is), electric motors absorb energy only when they are actually being
used, thereby reducing consumption up to 1/10.
In addition, as they do not use mineral oils, there
are no added management and disposal expenses. Servo motors are silent and eliminate the
problems of noise.

Software
To achieve such results, over the last few years
BLM has developed an extremely effective software tool to programme and control its tube benders: VGP automatically implements the machine
programme starting simply from the tube’s geometric co-ordinates.
The operator can directly simulate the NC machine movements, and safely and easily step in,
if needed. The software performance is enhanced
by the perfect correspondence of the trajectories completed by the machine devices that use
electrical axes.
The VGP software can provide the machine cycle time that can be used when calculating the
cost and productivity of the piece for estimates.

In addition, special software cycles have been
developed to automatically learn the clamp
closing positions thereby reducing the operator
know-how. All the set-up parameters are saved
with the programme being implemented. The
advantages in time saving and set-up repeatability are unmatchable when it comes to initial set-up
of the equipment and production changes.
No. 6 - march 2007
Perfect surface quality
BLM “all electric” machines are equipped with
a Boost features to push the carriage to produce
power exceeding 5,000 kg thereby improving
roundness as well as reducing the wall thickening on the outside edge of the tube.
The Boost also helps to reduce any pipe movements in the clamp jaws and reduces the pressure with a significant benefit on the surface quality of the finished tube. The power can be adjusted
on the basis of the final quality of the product.
Similarly, the clamp and the pressure die power
on the tube can also be varied by the operator
according to the geometry and type of material
being worked. These operations, that are inconceivable on a hydraulic machine, lead to
significant advantages in terms of speed, and
surface quality too.
INSPIRED FOR TUBE
Considering that no fluids are used, electronic control system are not subject to the usual variations
caused by different oil viscosity. In an electric machine, all this means that there are reduced downtimes and increased process repeatability.

Evolved handcrafts
The culture of beauty and the care for perfection are typical traits of evolved handcrafts. Corti Fratelli S.r.l. know how to achieve this, starting from a selection of tube bundles that are
cut, brushed and washed without even a slight

To give shape to beauty
“We look for complicated products, those that others cannot make” say Silvano and Fiorenzo Corti, managers of production and manufacturing,

that give shape to beauty ”.
Their experience originates from a distant past.
All these processes are handled to perfection

the company – head of the Elmsteel group that has
facilities in the UK, USA, Poland and Romania and
a total of 250 employees, 110 of which are employed
at the UK facilities, is a leading supplier of the major automotive companies throughout the world,
the Japanese included ”.

The company’s production layout is well divided
into production cells that are run and supervised
by an operator, who also makes sure that the components are shifted from one machine to another in
an efficient manner. Of importance in the company layout are the two production areas that include
the two Adige laser cutting machines, the BLM tube
bending machine and the saws to trim the ends
of the components.
The CM502 is ideal
Located in a separate building are the cut off and
endmachining saws that perform the traditional
activity of the company. The department has an
extremely efficient layout, with machines
aligned in two rows, supplied by abundant mag-
azines located externally and that convey the finished products to the central row. In this way,
each operator controls the operation of two
machines.

The recent addition to this department was an
ADIGE CM502 saw. voestalpine Elmsteel Ltd.
needed a machine that was not only competitive for small batches, but was also able to handle quantities of around 5,000 pieces, yet allowing rapid adaptation and fitting out to handle
the various production requirements.
“We found the ideal solution in the CM502 model,
considering that ADIGE was able to carry out modifications to the machine to satisfy some of our requests” explains Andy Baker. In fact, this machine
is suitable for processing average batches, starting from tubes or round bars in bundles with 10 to
102 mm diameter and lengths of up to 600 mm.
Voestalpine Elmsteel Ltd. has two complementary tube processing systems that are different by way
of technology and aggregate value, but that both
contribute to the company’s growth and help it to
stay competitive compared to the other companies
within the group.

machines, with ADIGE laser cutting systems and
sawing machines definitely stand out. The company can therefore be a valid showcase for the
made-in-Italy products, also because these machines are quite rightly supported by the belief
that not only are they the best machines available
on the market, but that they are produced by
front-runners in their own field.

together with the extreme attention paid to clientpartner relations, are the fundamental aspects
behind the BLM GROUP do BRASIL activity.
From Brazil to Brazil
The BLM GROUP has been in Brazil since 1967;
it has progressively grown with the country and
its needs. In fact, in thirty years of activity, BLM
GROUP do BRASIL has transformed and
evolved in line with the market demands, and
yet has maintained its primary goal: to offer its
customers increasingly better and efficient
service and support.
BLM GROUP is the only tube processing machine manufacturer to be directly present on the
Brazilian market with its own offices and as a
unique partner who can offer innovative solutions as well as all the services that qualify and
distinguish the company.
Bearing this in mind, it is not just by chance that
the BLM GROUP is the leading importer of machines for tube processing in Brazil: tube benders, tube shapers, saws and tube laser cutting systems.
The complete offer, the ability to convey
know-how and technological solutions of a
world-wide group with global experience,

Right from the start, talking in the local
language, BLM has built up a relationship of
trust and credibility, which customers appreciate when they can speak directly with the
manufacturer, and with technicians whose primary target is to satisfy them by making the machines work.

A young and motivated staff
Today, BLM GROUP do BRASIL can count
on a young, highly motivated staff that is fully
dedicated to the company’s products and
can therefore guarantee all the sales and
technical assistance services in situ. At the facilities in Guaruhlos, SP, besides all the administrative services and spare parts store, a permanent showroom has been set up with demo
machines and that are also used for training purposes. This is another step towards satisfying our
customer’s demands.

Growing with the market
The pace at which the Brazilian economy boosted in the nineties gave customers more
drive and found the BLM GROUP do BRASIL
as an increasingly qualified partner that
was prepared to satisfy the growing demand.
“We have grown with our customers, who
were initially only in the furniture industry and
concentrated in the area of São Paulo” says the
company.
“The strong industrial drive in the automotive,
motorcycle, agricultural machinery, heavy machinery and pipe sectors has contributed to a
considerable increase in tube consumption in
other areas of the country too.
BLM GROUP do BRASIL therefore followed this
