Welcome Back
I hope all the students and staff had an enjoyable and relaxing break. Students have settled
back well into work mode and are focussing on a successful and productive term 4.
Our Year 12 students complete their classes next week and then have their Valedictory
Dinner on Friday 25 October at the San Remo Ballroom in Carlton. Their exams commence
on 3 November and on behalf of everyone associated with the college we wish them all the
very best.
Easter Zone athletics
Congratulations to all the students who competed at the Eastern Zone athletics last week.
We had some outstanding performances and details are included in this newsletter
Battle of the Bands
Our annual Battle of the Bands happened this
week but again unfortunately due to the weather
we could not have all our junior students travel
to the senior campus. We are hoping to have
the bands perform at the junior campus later
this term.

Congratulations to all the students who
performed. They were all excellent
performances.
Thanks to Mrs Vear and her mentor group for
their organisation and to Mr Harris, Mr Mifsud
and the VET music students for their work in
setting up and running the sound and the Year 10 students who set up the stage. I would
also like to thank the VCAL team who coordinated a great sausage sizzle for the students and staff.
School of St Jude
Our Year 9 students had an opportunity to hear about the School of St Jude which started in Tanzania, Africa in 2002
with 3 students and now has 1650 students. Further details are included in the Junior School report.

College Captains Report
After thirteen years our schooling journey is drawing to a close.
It has been a year of mixed emotions with students having to say goodbye to their old schools: Parkwood, Maroondah and Croydon,
but also exciting as we merged together to create the foundation for Melba College.
Year 12 can be full of challenges, stress and anxiety at times, but it is always the memories, the good times and the people we have
shared them with that will always be cherished and remembered.
There have been many highlights of this year such as: athletics carnival, grease: the musical and battle of the bands. All these
activities and so much more have enabled us to further come together as a cohort and as Melba College.
Thank you to all the students, teachers, families, Mr Bennett, Ms Peters and all the coordinators for supporting us and helping us to
succeed.
Good luck to all the Year 12s sitting exams and we wish them and all the other students of Melba College the very best in the future.

Parents/carers are requested to ring the relevant campus using the Absentee Hot Line if your child will be absent or late due to illness or for any
other reason, eg extended family holidays, and leave a message, outlining the reason for the absence and, if known, the length of time the child will
be away. 24 hour Absentee Hot Lines - Junior Campus 9725 8277 Senior Campus 9539 2345
Junior School Report
Welcome back everybody! Term 4 certainly promises to be an action packed one with the last CATs of the year being finalised, City
Experience for the Year 9s, camp for the Year 8s and Cultures Week, end of year orientation programs and Activities Week for all
junior students. It is also a time for celebration and reflection as we hold our final ACE assemblies for the year, look towards our
annual celebration of achievement evening and we farewell our Year 9 students as they transition into the senior school. With so
much going on, I am sure that the weeks will absolutely fly by!
These first weeks back have been particularly busy for our Year 9 students with their second transition activity to the senior campus,
the City Experience information evening and year level meetings and a special visit from the Tanzanian school of St Jude on
Wednesday this week.
Our Year 9 students were treated to a presentation by representatives from
the school who spoke about the importance and value of education and
provided an alternative perspective on the state of global education for our
students. The story of the development of this school and the young
Australian who is the founder of the school is truly inspirational.
This is what the students had to say:
“It was eye opening and made me appreciate what we’ve got.” Caitlyn
Watson
“The story of the Massai man was inspiring because he was so persistent
and never gave up his dream.” Thomas Bradshaw
“His story was so moving and inspiring and reminds us how lucky we are to
be in Australia and have access to education.” Iang Tial
We were able to provide this opportunity to our students due to the vision and generosity of the Croydon Rotary Club and we thank
them sincerely.
Alison Steele – Junior School Leader
Year 7 Report
Our final term has begun for 2013, and many classes are again completing CAT tasks and work leading up to the final CATs for this
year. I have been very impressed with how each class has returned from the holidays, refreshed and focussed in their classes.
In the next few weeks, I will be beginning the process of looking at class lists for 2014. If you would like to discuss this with me,
please feel free to contact me at school, and we will discuss the best options for your child. Where possible, I endeavour to place
students with friends, but ultimately, it is focussed work that needs to be the key driver in classroom placement.
This week, as Year 12 students finish their secondary school journey, it reminds me that while Year 12 is a very big year, it is six
years in the making. Good work habits and skills are built up, from Year 7, throughout the years. An Education Support Staff member
who was in my Year 7 Maths room this week, reminded me that the work we were doing was a precursor to the work she was doing
in a Year 12 Maths classroom earlier in the week. Every lesson, every week and every year is important in the journey throughout
secondary school.
Deb Stacey – Year 7 Leader
Year 8 Report
I hope you all had a great and restful break! Term four promises to be the most exciting of all.
All the camp notices have gone out, for those that missed the details I have included them below. Consent and payment can be
provided by returning the bottom section to the General Office.
The rescheduled camp from term 1 has now been booked for November 27th – November 29th. This is the day after the Year 8
exams and will not interrupt any of the remaining curriculum.
Camp highlights include: Surfing; Sea kayaking; Bells Beach walk; Beach Olympics.
It’s going to offer the students a chance to get to see their teachers in a different light, as well as bond with each other.
As with any camp the students will need to abide by strict behavioral guidelines especially around the beach. Any student that doesn’t
meet these guidelines may be denied any continuing participation in the camp. Parents will be required to collect the students from
Torquay in this circumstance.
Payment options: You may pay for the camp in:
- 2 installments of $100 (1st due October 25)
- 1 payment $200 (due November 1
- Final payment of $20 ($180 paid earlier in the year)
For those parents that would like to know if you have paid the $180 you can ring me or the office for the details.
Nicholas Mammoliti – Year 8 Leader
Year 9 Report
There have been a lot of exciting things happening since we've returned from the holiday break!
City Experience is almost upon us - all students should have collected their information pack by now. If they haven't, please contact
either of the year level co-ordinators. All permission forms should have been handed in by Friday 18 October - please note that
payment is NOT due by this time, that was an error on the form. Payment required is $100.
Uniform - we have been very impressed with the improvement of student's uniforms in the last week. Please note that if students are
not in full school uniform (whatever combination that may be) they will not be permitted to participate in the City Experience. There
are a number of uniform items available to borrow if needed, please contact Carol Ashton or one of the Junior School Management
team.
Our Year 9's were privileged to listen to presentations from two very important groups this week: The School of St Jude's and
Interchange. Both are such worthwhile foundations, and our students found their presentations engaging and inspiring. A number of
students expressed an interest in becoming a part of the Interchange program; it would be wonderful if we could see some our
students working with such a worthy foundation.

Year 10 Report
Exams/Assessment Items
With the final Year 10 classes scheduled for Friday 15 November (four weeks from this Friday), Year 10 students are currently very
busy completing assessment tasks and revising for their forthcoming end-of-year examinations.
Maroondah Young Leaders Reunion
On Thursday 10 October five Melba College students attended this program. The objective of this reunion was to revisit the work the
students completed during the week long session they completed earlier this year. In addition to this, our students considered the
work they’d completed subsequent to the completion of the initial program. The five students involved were Lauren Buckle, Aaron
Stewart, Antonny Orec, Merrie McKinnon and Annie Thomas.
Division Athletics
We’d like to acknowledge all Melba College athletes and their performances at the recent divisional level. In particular, we wish to
congratulate Andy Booth who, as a consequence of winning at this stage, will contest the high jump event on Tuesday 22 October at
a state level. Congratulations on your victory Andy and best of luck on Tuesday.
Transition
On Wednesday 16 October another very successful transition event was held on the Senior Campus. On this occasion the Year 9’s
and 10’s participated together in a Tabloid Sports activity. This essentially meant that the students rotated through a range of stations
including the bean bag toss and the Frisbee throw. Thanks must be extended to all students and staff involved, in particular Jason
Marsham, Richard Allan and Carla Rossetto.
Formal
The 2013 Year 10 Formal will be held at Bramleigh on Monday 9 December. Notices containing all relevant information will be
distributed shortly.
Adriana Box and Michael Benjamin - Year 10 Leaders
Year 11 Report
Welcome back to the Year 11 students for the final term of the year. We hope that it is an exciting and challenging last few weeks of
school. There are some important things going on in the next few weeks.
Exams are fast approaching and it is important that students are keeping up to date with classwork and have finalised their SAC
pieces in order to transition into Year 12. Please ensure that you check in with all of your classroom teachers to ensure that there are
no work requirements outstanding and that you are completely ready for the exam period ahead. You will need to have completed all
of your work in order to study and revise effectively.
The Year 11 VCAL students have organised a Year 11 Social to take place on Friday 8 November at the Lilydale International. This is
an exciting event and an opportunity for students to socialise outside of school. All students have received forms and they should be
brought back to the office as soon as possible in order for the event to go ahead as there is a minimum number of attendees
required.
Finally, we would like to extend our congratulations to Isaac Stott for his Lyrebird nomination for his performance in ‘Grease’. We
wish him all of the best of luck and we will keep our fingers crossed for him!
Laura Zinghini and Ellen Hubble – Year 11 Leaders
Year 12 Report
We're almost there; after slaving over the books, burning midnight oil and writing countless notes, our VCAL and VCE classes will
officially conclude next Wednesday. VCAL classes will continue to run for students who have not quite yet finished, whilst VCE
teachers will be available for feedback prior to subject exams.
Despite having some themed days for dress, students should remember that at all times that clothing worn should be tasteful and in a
respectful manner. A few events about to take place that parents should be aware of:
Wednesday 23 October:
VCE English students will complete a practice English/EAL exam from 1:30pm. Students will be dismissed after the completion of this
exam (circa 4:45pm). This will give our students a good trial run for the exams starting a week later.
Thursday 24 October:
Last official day for Year 12 Students. Celebration Day will encompass a number of events, allowing our students to reflect on their
previous 6 (or 7) years of secondary schooling. Festivities commence from 10:00am – no early arrivals please. The showcase of the
day will be the Final Assembly during Period 4. Parents are welcome to attend.
Friday 25 October:
The Valedictory Dinner will be held at San Remo Ballroom. Parking is available at the church opposite on Nicholson Street. 7:00pm
arrival for Canapés with formalities commencing at 7:30pm. Semi-Formal attire for the night (no denim).
Finally, I wish our Year 12 VCE students all the best for the exams. The study has paid off now – good luck!

Year 8 German “Schuhplattler” Dance Incursion
On Friday 20 September Frau Halpin and Frau Bate welcomed Herr Rowan Classen and Frau Isabelle Wills to our college to teach
Year 8 students traditional German dancing. We heard about the history of the “Schuhplattler” before learning how to footslap “behind
- to the front – to the top – to the side” then circle with a partner and clap “eins – zwei – drei!!” The workshop finale was a
demonstration of some awesome “student flying”. Great fun and we can’t wait till next year to try it all again!
Sean Morris - I enjoyed the dancing best and I would recommend it because it was great fun
Ashleigh Klepac - I had a tie between the cultural stories and the dancing for what was best fun! I found the stories interesting but the
dancing was fun!
Therese Hird - I loved it and I will remember every step. Rowan Classen was really funny and nice as
well.
Josh O’Sullivan - The best part was the dancing as it was fun and energetic. It had everyone involved.
Delaney Smith - My favourite part was the flying tricks because I got spun around.
Jordyn Whittaker - I really did enjoy the Schuhplattler dance! It was a lot of fun. My favourite part was the dancing because it's very
different to what we do in our daily lifestyle.

Excursion To Clayton Utz Law Firm
On Monday 9 September a group of legal studies students, accompanied by Mr McPherson, travelled to the city to attend a
presentation by Clayton Utz, a commercial law firm, in association with the Beacon Foundation. Melba College was one of only 3
schools invited to take part in this event.
After arriving, we were ushered into a large meeting room where the students participated in a “speed careering” activity. They were
divided into groups, and were able to listen to and ask questions of, a variety of employees who specialise in different areas of the
firm, such as I.T., paralegal, law and library research.
After morning tea, the groups were taken on guided tours of the firm’s offices. They then returned to the initial meeting area where a
panel of recent graduates talked about their experiences.
The students gained a valuable insight into the work involved in a profession such as law, as well as the variety of pathways some of
the presenters took after leaving school.
The behaviour of the students was excellent. They asked questions of the presenters and displayed excellent behaviour at all times.
They were a credit to themselves and the school, and were a pleasure to be with.
Don McPherson - Legal Studies Teacher
Rubicon Survival Camp
On Monday 16 September our VPYC class got to school pumped and ready to go; when the police bus arrived we all packed our
bags on and got onto the bus within minutes. When we were all on the bus we were chatting excitedly and having a laugh. When we
arrived at Rubicon the real fun began!
Then we had to get ready for two nights in the bush. We spent the whole
afternoon preparing shopping for food on a budget that was $24 per person, we
all ended up buying sufficient amounts of food that was healthy and nutritious.
We all had to be leaders in a way throughout the trip, we took turns and
organised everything ourselves. Then it took us about 6 hours to pack all our
things together. We were ready to go!!!
The next morning our journey began, we got dropped off by the bus on a dirt
track and then had to walk 5 hours to our 1st camp
site, Barnewall Plains. We set up camp in the
rain, had to set up our Trangias and had to cook then eat in the rain. The next day the weather
was basically the same.
We did a 40 minute walk to the bus the next morning then we drove to the big river, where we set
up our tents and got ready for our rafting trip. We got
in the river at 12pm and we then followed the rapids
down to the pines. It took 4 hours to raft down the
river but that was four of the best hours of the trip,
when we had calm water we would have wars
between the other rafts and we had awesome fun.
That night we cooked another nice meal each, surprisingly it didn’t rain too much. Later
we all sat around the campfire telling funny stories and feasting on different foods. We
had a huge variety as we all have different ideas.
The next day we hopped back on the bus and headed back to Rubicon. We all had to then pack up all the equipment, tents and we
had a lot of work to do but we all worked together really well and managed to get it done in just 4 hours.
All together the camp was a great success and we each learnt many new skills, including how to be a strong leader, working in a
team swiftly and navigation. We will miss Rubicon camp, and the closeness of being together all day.
Massive thank you to Mrs Lees, Mr Marsham and Olivia who gave up their time to join us on this wonderful life changing experience.
And a final thank you to Mark Senior and Mark Junior for helping us on the camp, we couldn’t have done it without you.
Kate Ball – Year 10

S.S.V. Eastern Metropolitan Region Intermediate Girls Hockey
On Tuesday 15 October I had the pleasure of accompanying the
intermediate Hockey girls to Hawthorn Hockey Centre to compete.
The girls were Esther Boih, Rebecca Cumming, Mawi Te Hlawn Bawi,
Sui Hliang, Rosie Hoinville, Ella Hopkinson, Sung Sung Khi Teng, Zing
Mual, Ywa Hiy Tha Mual, Sereana Qoro, Aloi Simmons, Katie Smith,
Cuai Cuai Thihlum and Iang Tial.
They played 3 games being competitive in each. They lost the first game
to Canterbury 0 to 5 (Canterbury came second at state last year and
made it through this year as well) and then won the next two games 7 to
0 against Brentwood and 6 to 0 against Healesville.
Throughout the whole day the girls played with enthusiasm, good team
work, demonstrating excellent sportsmanship and a high skill level. They
also were excellent ambassadors for Melba College. One of the umpires
was so impressed that he has offered to come out and help coach them next year.
Congratulations girls on a fantastic effort.

United Youth Media
From September 22 to October 13 I reported on Interchange Outer East’s
Italian exchange as part of the Melmi project for 2013. The three-week
overseas cultural exchange featured two weeks in Milan, three nights in
Rome and two nights in Venice. The entire trip was fantastic but a few of the
highlights were going to see Inter Milan vs Florentine at San Siro stadium,
going inside the Colesseum and visiting the Vatican.
The trip can be accredited to the wonderful people from Interchange Outer
East who were very supportive and United Youth media for allowing me this
once in a lifetime opportunity.
I highly recommend that people take the opportunity to volunteer with
Interchange Outer East has it really opens your eyes to the abilities of
people with a disability and the difference every individual can make.
If you are interested you can check www.ioeitaly2013.weebly.com for
pictures and daily blogs of the trip.
Katie Smith (United Youth Media)
Katie should be congratulated for the wonderful contribution she made to the trip. All reports from the tour leaders were that she
made her own impact with both the way she produced her work and her willingness to play a part in the tour activities. This was an
amazing educational experience for Katie, to spend three weeks utilizing the many skills and talents that she has been cultivating in
her Digital Media VET course this year with UYM.
UYM have been busy working on the video for the mayoral ball and finishing off projects for the VET course in preparation for New
Caledonia.
This weekend a group will be venturing to Daylesford to report on the Rotary Overseas annual meeting. Our international projects
have been endorsed by rotary and we are now able to seek funding with proper tax concessions. A great leap forward for the project
and UYM. We are grateful to the Croydon Rotary club for their support and assistance.
Community Partnerships
Our first two nights back for the term saw us host the annual Primary Schools Speech contest at Melba College Senior campus.
What a wonderful event it was! Two nights of very clever 12 year olds, competing for what is now the prized shield of the "Primary
Schools Speech Competition" run jointly by Croydon Rotary Club and Melba College. Nine schools and 18 participants competed
over two nights in what all agreed was a very special event.
Students had carefully crafted their speeches and had spent hours preparing their presentations so that we, the audience, could
laugh, cry and at times be shocked by both the content and the delivery.
This year Bank of Melbourne came on board as a sponsorship partner and this proved to be a success as it gave us a chance to
share this very unique occasion with other community groups. All felt privileged to be part of it, and their support was appreciated by
all. Bank of Melbourne provided the medal and book prizes and Melba College the venue and supper.
Whilst the 1st, 2nd and 3rd on both nights were very excited to receive their accolades, I think Marlene and David from
Toastmasters/Rotary summed it up perfectly when they said that, "all students were winners". Each child who took the time to
prepare and deliver their speech had done a great job and the audience showed their enthusiasm in their applause for each one.
The event is run along the strict guidelines, by the experts in the speech-making field - Toastmasters. Even they were blown away by
the standard and were genuinely challenged when trying to find a winner, because all the speeches were of such a high quality.
Parents, teachers, students, Rotarians and guests were all agreed that this was a very
special night for all involved. We hope to invite more supporters to the event next year, as it
really is an event not to be missed. Congratulations to Marlene Sinclair on again delivering
such a wonderful event and to all the students and their teachers for the time and effort in
preparing such engaging topics, we'll be talking about this for weeks to come I'm sure.
The winners:
Monday night

2
Ashlee Maynes - If I could change the world (Wonga Park Primary School)

2nd Taya Fittolani - Australia is a great place to live (Kalinda Primary)
3rd Peerson Lynch - Someone I admire... Abraham Lincoln (Yarra Road)
As already mentioned earlier by Alison Steele we were very lucky to have both the school of St Jude and Interchange Outer East in
the building on Wednesday to speak to our Year 9 students. Both partnerships are very exciting as they offer our students the
opportunity to discover life beyond our community and situations. To be part of something bigger than ourselves and to assist others
less fortunate is something I hope all students will consider as part of their own development as global citizens.
Thank you to Croydon Rotary and Interchange for your ongoing support of our college and the opportunities you present our
students.
Lastly Elijah Rowlands represented Melba College at the Croydon Rotary meeting on Tuesday night. He spoke very confidently
about his appreciation for the opportunity he is about to undertake in going to Italy next year on student exchange.
