SAVE Annual Report FY 2014-2015
YEARS
Message from the
Board of Directors
Yasi Safinya-Davies, Psy.D.
Greetings! Last October, we welcomed
Dr. Yasi Safinya-Davies as our new executive
director.
2016 marks the 40th anniversary of SAVE’s campaign
to end domestic violence in the Tri-City area. It’s an
opportunity to review our history and renew our goals.
Our priority is to deepen our community and stakeholder relationships and reinvest in SAVE’s
founding belief—it takes a community to
stop domestic abuse.
Executive Director
Dr. Safinya-Davies joined SAVE in 2010
as a mental health consultant and partnering
facilitator of our 40-hour Domestic Violence
Advocate Certification Training.
The demographics and needs of the Tri-Cities’
respective communities have changed tremendously
since 1976. SAVE must be able to offer culturally
responsive services to our clients and engage our
diverse community to join us in taking action.
In 2014 she was named director of SAVE’s
Clinical and Prevention Services. Her leadership
and commitment have been invaluable to
the organization.
SAVE is more than a shelter with a crisis hotline. Our
innovative programs have engaged and educated the
wider community. The “Loves Me, Loves Me NotSM” teen
dating workshops help students avoid unhealthy relationships; our COPS (Community Oriented Prevention
Services) Program trains local police in crisis intervention; and our new Empowerment Center, which focuses
on post-shelter assistance, have all established SAVE
as a leader in domestic violence reduction.
Dr. Safinya-Davies earned her doctoral degree
in Clinical Psychology from Alliant International
University, California School of Professional
Psychology. She has worked to eliminate
domestic violence and sexual assault throughout
her career.
We look forward to celebrating our 40th
anniversary and promising future with
Dr. Safinya-Davies at the helm.
2
In celebration of our first 40 years—and our remarkable
clients, staff, donors, and volunteers—SAVE will host
and sponsor domestic violence prevention events
throughout the year. We hope to see you there.
There are a number of ways you can directly advance
our current and new programs. Become a volunteer
for our Empowerment Center, Shelter, or Hotline.
Or invite us to provide a free domestic violence
prevention and awareness presentation—SAVE Talks—
at your workplace or faith/community center.
“SAVE is more than a shelter with
a crisis hotline. Our innovative
programs have engaged and
educated the wider community.”
We’d also welcome financial contributions. Your
generosity will enable SAVE to hire a childcare
provider, purchase supplies for our kids’ room,
or offer workshops to guide domestic violence
survivors toward safety. Please visit our website
(www.save-dv.org) for ideas.

Carrie Blake
SAVE Client
Carrie Blake has used SAVE’s services during two
periods in her life and speaks openly at SAVE events
about her abuse history. She feels it’s important for
people to hear from a white, middle-class, educated
survivor of domestic violence.
Carrie married at age 19 and spent 12 years with a man
who began to abuse her and continued as their two
children grew up, often deliberately striking her in their
presence. She did not want her son to become an
abuser, so she planned her exit.
She was referred to SAVE, which helped her work
through the legal and emotional process—court
appearances, restraining orders, crisis counseling,
divorce. Being in court with her husband was harrowing
(Carrie had symptoms of PTSD), but SAVE volunteer
Sybil Smith helped through it all.
“Just the thought of the place and staff gives me a sense of security.”
Carrie believes that SAVE takes the shameful, hidden
subject of domestic abuse out of the shadows and into
public discussion. Her role has been to explain why
some women stay with their abusers—often due to fear
of retribution—which many people cannot understand.
“No one at SAVE judged me,” Carrie said. “I was treated
with dignity and respect.” She has recommended its
services to many other women.
4
“No one at SAVE judged me. I was treated with dignity and respect.”
Carrie would like to see SAVE extend its outreach
to middle and elementary schools and start a
dialogue with children, who are also victims in
a violent household.

Programs
24-Hour Crisis Hotline
Community Prevention and Outreach
Linkages Rapid Rehousing Collaborative
The Hotline is a gateway to all of SAVE’s services.
Trained domestic violence counselors offered callers
emotional support, crisis intervention, and referrals.
Calls can be conducted in more than 300 languages
through a 24/7 translation service. In 2015 SAVE
responded to 1754 calls from 1565 callers.
These innovative services raised awareness about domestic violence and SAVE programs. Our “Loves Me,
Loves Me NotSM” curriculum was presented to 5187
participants at local junior high and high schools,
churches, and youth groups to prevent abusive
relationships before they start and end the cycle
SAVE’s participation in the McKinney Linkages program
provided provided nine families (30 individuals) with
long-term assistance and preparation for selfsufficiency. Families received up to 18 months of rental
assistance, allowing mothers to further their education,
enhance their job skills, and accumulate the life skills
necessary to move on from an abusive past.
Counseling Services
Psychotherapy was provided to individuals of all ages,
families, and groups at both our Shelter and Empowerment Center locations. SAVE clinicians participated
in our domestic violence counselor certification and
received ongoing training and supervision in skilled,
sensitive service. Treatment goals were tailored to each
client or family, and groups were developed per clients’
emerging needs. In 2015 our interns served 203
individuals and families; nearly 250 women attended
our counseling group sessions.
30-Bed Emergency Shelter
Our safe house, in a confidential location, offered
families fleeing abuse case management, peer
counseling, therapy, children’s services, and access
to food, clothing, and other basic needs. This 90-day
program helped individuals and families heal and move
toward safe and independent lives. Case managers
worked with clients to ensure they had safe housing
after their stay. SAVE provided shelter to 212 women
and children last year.
Children’s Program
SAVE recognizes the need to work closely with
children to heal the trauma of living with violence.
We facilitated 141 sessions of group and individual
peer counseling and therapeutic play activities.
Our Family Support advocates worked with mothers
to help them understand the impact of crisis and
transitions and learn better ways to respond.
of violence. Team “Stronger Than You ThinkSM” is our
youth empowerment group, led by 17 local teens
dedicated to engaging the community around teen
dating violence. And 32 participants joined us for our
newest presentations—SAVE Talks—brief presentations that encourage professionals to become change
agents within their own communities. SAVE regularly
attended community events and health fairs to share
information about our services.
“SAVE is considered one of the primo organizations of its kind. I’m proud
to represent SAVE’s work, outreach, and growth, particularly the teen
programs.”

Programs
Community Oriented Prevention Service
Program (COPS)
40-Hour Training and Volunteer Program
In California, individuals who work directly with abuse
victims must complete an intensive 40-hour domestic
violence counselor training. SAVE’s training program
was completed by 66 community members; many are
now direct-client service volunteers. These volunteers
provided individual and group peer counseling, crisis
intervention, and assistance with TROs and court
accompaniment—a total contribution of 2156 hours
of service.
SAVE partnered with three local police departments
to improve law enforcement’s response to abuse
victims and increase the officers’ understanding
of the dynamics of domestic abuse. The COPS
advocates worked with the families, referred by
the police departments, to provide safety and well
being through crisis counseling, information and
advocacy, access to emergency resources, and links
to ongoing support services. 1342 victims received
help at the Fremont, Hayward, and San Leandro
police departments.
Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) Clinic
Empowerment Center
“Our philosophy of treating survivors in a way that’s respectful and
compassionate is one of the things I’m most proud of at SAVE.”
“My daughter, a former SAVE client, helped me understand how hard it
is for women to leave their abusers.
I have a special place in my heart
for these women.”
Sybil Smith
SAVE advocates provided support and guidance
through the often daunting temporary restraining
order (TRO) process. During court hearings, clients are
required to face their abusers. Our volunteers helped
clients navigate the legal system and provided
emotional support through what can be a traumatic
experience. Our advocates accompanied 115 women
to court and assisted 106 clients to complete TROs
to keep abusers from causing further harm.
The Center afforded clients and the community access
to SAVE’s comprehensive services. Clients in crisis
received immediate case management, emergency
safety planning, survival supplies (food, clothing, and
toiletries), help with TRO documentation, and assistance finding shelter. More stable clients engaged in
comprehensive case management and participated
in wellness groups. In 2015 SAVE helped nearly 200
clients through this program.
