I’m attending a wedding in Ottawa next month. Do you have any advice
for wedding-appropriate wear during the colder weather? —Chelsea

ON HER WEDDING
DAY IN 1975
DEAR CHELSEA:
Happy to hear you’ve got a
winter wedding to go to. I always
find that attending affairs rife
with romance does wonders to
get us through these potentially
bleak months.
You’ll want to wear something
chic, no matter what the weather,
and it’s really about fabric.
For the chillier months, may I
suggest something in rich velvet
or perhaps brocade? Even satin
makes a sensational statement,
and there are some great stretchsatin cocktail dresses around that
are comfy, travel well and are
quite glamorous. Try labels like
Nicole Miller or David Meister.
Matte jersey can also be a
fantastic, elegant option for this
type of wintry wedding fare.
(As a matter of fact, the first
time I got married, back in the
mid-1970s, I wore a fantastic
white matte jersey gown with
spaghetti straps and a whitesatin-lined hooded jersey jacket
over it). Lida Baday and Greta
Constantine are two great
Canadian labels that turn out
gorgeous easy-to-wear jersey
dresses that are perfect yearround and easy to travel with.
You may want to “winterize”
your cocktail look with a delicate
little fur collar or stole (and
that can certainly mean faux fur
as well!).
Vintage stores have some
great finds. Beaded little
cardigans, readily available at
vintage stores, will also give a
cozy, glam touch to your outfit
and come in handy if your dress
is sleeveless.
I also like the idea of a tuxedo
jacket worn over a little cocktail
dress. Smythe is a hot Canadian
label that does some great little
tux jackets.
For winter, stick with
pantyhose in either sheer
nude or ultra-sheer black. My
personal favourites remain nude
fishnets—sensual, classy and
perfect to even out skin tone.
In the shoe department, you
may want to abandon strappy
evening sandals for a closed shoe.
A classic pair of patent pumps
is a wardrobe staple. Just make
sure your wedding shoes have a
decent comfort level, unless you
plan on kicking them off when
you hit the dance floor.

opens in Canada this May, and will carry gorgeous gowns for romantic,
traditional and cocktail brides alike

Kleinfeld Hudson’s Bay opens its doors in Toronto this May, but brides can already book an appointment at
the store, an offshoot of the New York City wedding-dress mecca made famous by reality TV show Say Yes
to the Dress.
Brides visiting the 20,000-square-foot Kleinfeld salon in the Hudson’s Bay Queen St. W. store can
choose from 600 designs—including stunning red gowns and sari-like dresses for traditional Asian and
Indian brides—priced from $1,500 to $30,000 and up.
“Hudson’s Bay has been Canada’s premier destination for gift registry for generations,” says Jessica
Mulroney, Hudson’s Bay bridal spokesperson. “Extending into bridal was the natural next step.” The store
will house a Maison Birks boutique and carry dresses popular in the New York location, including gowns by
Pnina Tornai, Lazaro and Reem Acra, and a selection of pieces from Canadian designers, including Greta
Constantine and David Dixon.

over the sleeves or sprinkled down the
back. We fell in love with these capped

The Cascading Skirt
While ballgown silhouettes are a fairy-tale
favourite, for a modern-day princess we
suggest softer volume. Instead of a massive
skirt that starts at the waist, look for shapes
with fullness that increases gradually.
BEST FOR all brides. Strapless styles suit a
variety of body types, but pay close attention
to fit. The bodice should fit snugly and lie flat
at the chest, without a gap or spillage. Pay
attention to the weight of the skirt as well—
heavy gowns can pull the bodice down.

four kids before that. When I came along she
called me Misty Danielle Melissa Joy Fox. She
thought, I’m just going to use up all the names
I have left. This is the last one.
YOU CAN BE RECOGNIZED FOR MANY THINGS,
in this present day, instead of just one. Even 10
years ago if you wanted to be an actor, you had
to think, “Well, let’s see how this goes.” Now
we’ve accepted that artists have lots of outlets.
We’re just looking to get our creativity out there
any way we can.
WHEN RELATIONSHIPS END it’s the total death
of dreams. It’s like when the plane lands but
the movie isn’t finished. I was okay for that to
happen with Rock of Ages because I didn’t need
to see the end of that one.

I STUDIED PROFESSIONAL WRITING AND
EDITING, and then screenwriting, and film
and video production. I really want to use it
sometime. I want to put all those things together
and come up with a really funny romcom.
I WORK WITH EMILY HAINES A LOT. I go to her
house at 4:40 a.m. and she’s funny all the time.
If I go to her house past noon to do her makeup
there’s always pink champagne being poured.

I DO MY MAKEUP WHILE I’M DRIVING. I never
feel like I have time to do it for myself. Every
traffic light is an opportunity. You just have to
look at it like that.

PEOPLE OFTEN ASK, “What part of England are
you from?” and I say, “The Australian part.” It’s
best, especially with strangers, to police yourself
into thinking that their intentions are good.
If they’re coming up to talk to you, they’re
reaching out. I think you have to try to find the
best in everyone until you get shown the worst.
I REMEMBER STANDING BACKSTAGE as a model
at Toronto fashion week for six hours waiting
for hair and makeup, eight months after having
my daughter, Violet. I had to go to the public
washrooms across the street at City Hall and
pump my breasts. I went back, did the show
and walked away thinking I can’t combine
motherhood and modelling at this point.
I MOVED TO TORONTO FROM AUSTRALIA in
2006 to be with my [now ex-] husband. I didn’t
check the weather before I came. It was a
shock. I’d already lived in London—I thought
that was cold!
MY DAUGHTER, VIOLET, LOVES FASHION. She
wears a mix of kids’ vintage and gets Gap Kids
gift certificates from her dad’s family. When she
was four she would say, “Oh I love that dress.
Actually, I don’t really love the dress but I like
the sleeves.” She was dissecting fashion when
she was very young.
LONDON SHAPED MY STYLE, big time. Because
when I moved from Melbourne, Australia, to
London, I had never left the country before.
My style was so different when I left London
because of the people I met, the fashion I saw
on shoots. My eyes were open.
I’M FIVE-FOOT-EIGHT. They used to call me
Little Misty when I modelled. My mum had
me and my sister with my dad, and she’d had
