The Amazing Arctic Achievements by the Japanese Naomi Uemura
By Pertti Frandsen
One of the most fascinating Arctic daredevils in modern times is the Japanese Naomi
Uemura. Before his 30th Birthday, he had solo - climbed Kilimanjaro, Aconcagua, Mont
Blanc and the Matterhorn. In addition, he had
attended the first Japanese expedition to the
summit of Mount Everest.
Naomi Uemura was born on 12th February
1941 in Hidaka in northern Japan. By nature
he was shy. It is said that he threw himself
into climbing only to enhance his confidence.
Greenland and the Arctic had a very special
absorbing effect on the Japanese daredevil.
Therefore, he set out to become the first person to reach the North Pole solo. It was in 1978.
The Arctic adventure ended with a fantastic
performance: A crossing of the Greenland ice
sheet from north to south - an achievement
no one had previously attempted. During the
crossing Uemura collected substantial quantities of samples and observations about snow,
ice and glacial conditions.
POST Greenland is therefore proud to present
this stamp as a tribute to the Japanese Naomi
Uemura’s legendary north-south crossing of
the ice cap in 1978.
North Pole
Actually Uemura dreamed of a solo crossing of
Antarctica. His expeditions in the Arctic were conceived as pure preparation for his daring aim in the
Southern Hemisphere. But, first the North Pole had
to be defeated. To ‘warm up’ as he called it, he
drove by dogsled from Greenland to Alaska. The
journey was almost 12,000 km and took 310 days.
Only then, he felt ready for the potency test in the
ultimate north.
Heading towards the North Pole in 1978,
Uemura wrote that he almost completely gave up
twice. On the fourth day of the expedition a polar
bear invaded his camp, ate his food and rubbed
his nose against the sleeping bag in which Uemura
played dead. When the polar bear returned the
GREENLAND COLLECTOR
next day Uemura was prepared and he shot it.
On the expedition’s 35th day Uemura ended
up on an ice floe with his dog team. After a terrible night Uemura finally found an ice bridge only
a metre wide and this was to be his and his dogs
rescue exit route.
After 57 days he became the first to solo the
North Pole. The date was 29th April 1978. He
described what happened as follows: ”The thing
that drove me forward was the thought of the
countless people who had helped and supported
me, and knowing that I could not stand face to
face with them if I gave up.”

land, a 2,540 meters high nunatak on the ice cap in
southern Greenland was named after the Japanese
adventurer in recognition of his achievements and
out of respect for his fantastic adventure in Greenland six years earlier. The following year a commemorative bronze plaque was unveiled at the airport
in Narsarsuaq to honour Uemura.

Crossing the ice sheet north - south
From the North Pole it took Uemura an additional 10 days to reach Cape Morris Jessup in the
northernmost part of Greenland. From there on
10th May he could begin his journey across the ice
cap towards the south. The use of sail on the dog
sled gave an incredible speed. The highest point of
the ice cap which Uemura reached en route was
3,230 metres. The position was 72 ° N, 40 ° W
and the date was 12th July. Finally, on 22nd August
1978, he reached the southernmost point of
Greenland. From there onwards all transportation
by dog sled proved quite impossible and a Twin Otter from Canada was chartered which flew Uemura
and the dogs to the airport in Narsarsuaq, where
the expedition ended.
Final destination Mt. McKinley
On 12th February 1984, Uemura’s 43rd Birthday,
he became the first to solo the summit of Mt. McKinley in Alaska. The following day during the descent he lost radio contact with the outside world.
A search team was sent out, but they found only
his equipment and his diary. The last lines read:
”If only I was in a warm sleeping bag. Whatever
happens, I will reach the summit of McKinley. ”

Japanese Interest for
Greenlandic Philately
By Pertti Frandsen
POST Greenland has, for the first time, participated in a stamp exhibition in
Japan. It took place in Yokohama from 28th – 2nd August in connection with
the world philatelic exhibition “PHILANIPPON 2011”.
When the large, impressive exhibition complex Pacifico Yokohama opened
its doors, thousands of eager Japanese had already been queuing for hours.
But they were not disappointed.
On the opening day POST Greenland issued a beautiful new stamp featuring Naomi Uemura, who, thereby, was deservingly honoured posthumously
for his outstanding Arctic achievements: In 1978 he crossed the Greenlandic
ice sheet from north to south by himself. Present at POST Greenland’s stamp
presentation was, among others, Uemura’s widow, Mrs. Kimiko Uemura, who
thanked us warmly for the beautiful stamp depicting her husband’s portrait.
POST Greenland had made a limited number of luxury packs, which each
contains the Uemura stamp as a single stamp, souvenir sheet, souvenir folder
and on an FDC, maxicard and postcard. Furthermore, the luxury pack contained an elegant etching with Uemura’s portrait, drawn and signed by the
artist who created the stamp image, Norwegian Martin Mörck. The luxury
packs were much sought after amongst the Japanese collectors.
For this reason there was great activity on our PostGreenland stand, which
made attending the exhibition an even more festive occasion for us. We thereby made contact with many new Japanese collectors, whom we look forward
to serve to the best of our abilities in the future.
During the six days of the exhibition no less than 50.000 visitors passed
by the stands. PHILLANIPPON 2011 clearly became the huge success the
organisers hoped.
POST Greenland thanks all the visitors at our stand I Yokohama.

Qaarsuarsuk – early coal mining in
Greenland 1905-24
The coal of Disko was already being mined as early
as 1780 at the settlement Aamaruutissat (Skansen),
where the locals had traditionally supplied themselves with coal. From 1782, the colonial administration systematised the mining under the name “Kulbrækkeriet på Disko” (The Coal Mine on Disko).
Later at the area of Gl. Qullissat, a little south of the
present Qullissat, the mine “Ritenbenks kulbrud”
(Ritenbenk’s Coal Mine) was opened.
The need for coal was increasing in Greenland
and, in 1905, “Statens kulbrud” (The Coal Mine
of the State) was opened at Qaarsuarsuk on the
northern side of Nuussuaq. Here, too, the mining
was initiated in an area where the local population
already mined for coal. However, regular mining in
mineshafts could only be initiated four years later.
It was soon discovered that mining in Greenland
– contrary to mines in most other areas – had the
advantage of not having the feared firedamp,
GREENLAND COLLECTOR
Since 2003, POST Greenland has had self-adhesive stamps in its product range, for instance the annual
Christmas stamp booklet. The two mining stamps G473 und G474 are only issued on self-adhesive paper,
however. This initiative with two yearly stamps, which are only made in self-adhesive format, has been
made to fill an increasing postal need for self-adhesive stamps in Greenland.
The two stamp designs have been created by Ina Rosing who, yet again, has been able to combine the
historic and the modern in her artwork.
because the hollows in the layers of coal were filled
with ice. The mine was shaped with a horizontal
mineshaft in the steep rock wall by the coast only
10 metres from the sea. The coal was dug from
an almost horizontal layer of coal with an average
thickness of 2.5 metres and an area of approximately 100 x 160 metres.
The Qaarsuarsuk mine was closed in 1924
after about 25.000 metric ton of coal had been
excavated. After long consideration concerning a
new mine on the southwest coast of Nuussuaq by
Atanikerluk, the activity was moved to Qullissat on
the northeastern coast of Disko. The stamp design
shows workers and equipment at the entrance to
the mine near the sea. The background shows an
original mining rapport on a part of the stamp.
Josva’s Copper Mine – Greenland’s first
copper mine 1907-14
Josva’s Copper Mine was named after the discoverer, the Greenlandic sealer Josva who, during
a hunting trip in the vicinity, found a rock with
copper minerals. The rock was found to contain
copper ore (Bornit) and, in 1852, the find became
the basis for the first modest mining in the area.
At first the official name “Innatsiaq” was used for
the mine. Before the activities were abandoned in
1854, 30 ton of mined ore (sorted after copper
content of about 30 % from the top of the vein)
were left in storage in the mining town.
The ore, which had been left behind, was not
shipped out until half a century later, when mining
was resumed in 1906 and it became the first ore
from the new mine. From the beginning the engineer, M. I. Nyeboe, was involved in the operation
and construction of the mine, first as technical
adviser and, from 1907, as director. He started
operations with known methods going from the
surface, but from 1910, important modernizations
had been introduced. The new thing in 1910 included subterranean mining, where two central main
shafts were the basis for the excavation of ore on
several subterranean levels. At the Josva mine, up
to five subterranean levels were connected with a
network of mineshafts down to depths of almost
100 meters below the surface of the sea.
Modern times also brought the introduction of
machines for mining, first based on steam power
and, already from 1913, diesel engines. “Modern”
exploitation of raw materials had made its appearance in the Josva mine. Numerous large expansion plans for the mine did not reach fruition, however, before activities were halted in 1914, when
the amount of copper was deemed too small to
support further operations.
The stamp design is dominated by the important
shaft tower, which was erected in 1910 and, has a
background with the signature of one of the miners
of the first mining activity, SOLJ [18]53, found as
rock graffiti near the copper vein.

By Ivars Silis - writer / photographer
When working on a book of photographs of
North Greenland I had agreed to accompany two
ice fishermen from Ilulissat to the fishing sites on
Kaniga, at Ilulissat ice fjord.
It was a must. Dogsledding and fishing for
halibut in an ice fjord is as much a part of
everyday life in the Disco Bay area, as the camel
in the desert.
We had driven through passages and frozen
lakes in heavy loose snowfall and spent the night
in a hunting cabin at a narrow bay in the fjord.
Next morning we started out in snowy weather,
but in a short time the sun had burnt the clouds
away and, when we rounded a promontory, this
panorama awaited us with fresh snow and icebergs.
But this was not just any iceberg, but one that is
truly characteristic of our time and for the Northern
Hemisphere’s most productive glacier.
Because of global warming, glaciers have pulled
so far back that it pushes the ice into huge slices
instead of breaking off as whole ice islands.
I jumped off the sled and ran out to the side to
get the aspect ratio with a photograph, which also
tells the story of a milder climate.
The folder may be ordered as single copies through retail
distribution from the issue date, 28th September 2011.

Horsens Philatelic Club will celebrate its 100th
anniversary in 2011. To mark this occasion the
club will host “HOFI 2011” – this year’s large,
national stamp exhibition in Denmark, which
will take place over the weekend of 10th to
11th September.
Collectors from all over the country will present
thousands of stamps ranging from motifs and
native philately to highly specialized collections,
which also attract international interest. Furthermore a number of postal administrations and stamp
dealers both from Denmark and abroad will participate in the exhibition.
POST Greenland will share its stand with our
good colleagues from Finland, Iceland and the
Faroe Islands. We very much look forward to seeing
our Danish collectors again.
This year’s Christmas stamps are by Camilla Nielsen.
The strawberry girls have been with Camilla ever
since her school years in the early nineties. The little
strawberry girl was not created until 2005, however, when Camilla’s niece Sofie-Amalie “Musse”
was born. The stamps show the strawberry girls in
variety of merry Christmas situations. It seems as if
they are always searching out their surroundings.
The Christmas star in the windows and the
snow is the essence of Greenlandic Christmas for
Camilla Nielsen. The star shines, guides, gathers,
strengthens and warms human relations and
traditions.
The dogsled on the stamp is the model, which
is most often used in the Disko bay area. There are
different types of dogsleds in Greenland depending
on where in the country they are used.
POST Greenland wishes everybody a merry
Christmas and a happy new year.
The admission to “HOFI 2011” is free.

Amongst the approximately 50 million stamp collectors in the
world, the Chinese account for 20 million. It is, therefore, obvious why
postal administrations all over the world focus intensively on China,
when new export marketing campaigns are being planned for selling
stamps to collectors.
POST Greenland has, therefore, participated in recent years in the large international stamp exhibitions in Asia, amongst others Hong Kong and Beijing.
In both places we experienced very great interest in Greenlandic stamps and
Greenlandic Philately.
POST Greenland’s work to cultivate new markets for Greenlandic stamps
in “The Middle Kingdom” continues to be goal-oriented. Now the time
has come to target the South Chinese mainland - more specifically Wuxi in
Jiangsu province.
POST Greenland has booked a stand at CHINA 2011, which is the title of
the 27th annual international stamp exhibition in Asia. The Exhibition is held
in “Wuxi Taihu International Expo Centre” from 11th – 15th November.
GREENLAND COLLECTOR
It will be five terrific philatelic days with many thousands of Chinese collectors,
who come to see and buy the newest stamps from a range of postal administrations
from all over the world, amongst these Greenland.
We look forward to meet our many faithful Chinese collectors.

POST Greenland withdraws two new
stamps featuring Her Majesty the Queen
Margrethe II’s portrait
By Pertti Frandsen
On 9th may 2011 POST Greenland issued the two stamps G464 and G465. These stamps
are the first in a new definitive series with Her Majesty the Queen Margrethe II’s portrait.
After the stamps were issued, it became regrettably apparent that the printed stamps
did not live up to the high quality, which POST Greenland normally delivers. The error in
quality occurred despite many control and security measures.
Because of the qualitative error the sales of the two definitive stamps has been discontinued in the post offices of Greenland as of 26th may 2011.
To replace the stamps, the printing of two new stamps with the same portrait of the
Queen is being initiated. These stamps will be issued in the high quality that POST Greenland stands for.
In POST Greenland’s opinion the two withdrawn stamps will not constitute philatelic
variants, which is to say rare and sought after issues. The reason for this is that stamp collectors all over the world, who have standing orders for POST Greenland’s new stamps,
have already received the two stamps, as is the custom at any stamp issue. The decision
to reprint the stamps has only been made because POST Greenland wishes to deliver the
highest quality of stamps
