Safety. Healing. A Way Forward.
Again and again, graduates of our programs tell us stories
of recovery and victory: “You gave me back myself and you
gave my child her mother again.”
For the past 32 years, Human Options has been changing
and saving lives. We know the powerful impact of our work
in two important ways:
Schools, and we reach out to new partners on an
ongoing basis.
We are pioneers in outreach to health service providers
– we educate physicians and nursing staff on how
to link domestic violence victims to resources. Our
partnerships with Kaiser Permanente and Hoag
Hospital Newport Beach are models of collaboration.
Safe Options for Seniors, the only such program in
Orange County, provides training to law enforcement
and mental health professionals, and continues to be a
powerful service for seniors at risk.
•
•
First, we see the human story. We stay in contact with our
clients over time and we hear their stories, their personal
way forward.
Secondly, independent research has shown that nine out
of ten clients are violence free one year or more after
graduation from our residential programs

We have hired a legal advocacy program supervisor who
will provide strong guidance and coordination for our
legal advocates as well as all our volunteer attorneys.
Our community education program will be initiating a

Thanks to our incredible community of supporters we can

Our staff members are trained to help clients heal from

Anna’s Story.
Last summer, I escaped from an 11 year abusive marriage
with my two children, ages 6 and 3. The abuse had started
when we were teenagers dating. I thought his jealousy
and controlling ways were normal and an expression of his
love for me. Over the years the physical and verbal abuse
increased and later he became financially controlling. He
was also an alcoholic and as his drinking increased, so
did his abuse. He eventually lost his job and I became the
breadwinner. He would

first time. My family began therapy and I met with a case
manager on a regular basis to create a plan for the months
ahead. But shortly after I entered Second Step, my mother
was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. I was in shock. My
mother had not appeared to be sick. For several weeks,
the children and I visited her in the hospital only to return
with bad news. Sadly, I lost my mother right before the
winter holidays. Even though I was devastated, I continued
therapy sessions, to process
my grief.

”When I walked into the shelter two
years ago, I was starving, homeless,
and hopeless. Human Options offered
me safety, hope, and guidance. The
counselors encouraged me and helped
me to see that the bottomless pit I had
fallen into was not so deep.”

“The courts ordered me to contact
Human Options. I enrolled in the
10-week Personal Empowerment
Program, to learn about the effects of
domestic violence. After the 10-week
program I had regularly scheduled
therapy appointments, which helped
me rebuild my life.”

“Human Options saved my life. I
got the direction and gained the
confidence that I needed to go
forward. With the continued support
of my Human Options counselor, I
set goals for myself, pursued new
employment and a new place to live.”
